Vida S. Culbert
1998-12-03

WEST PARIS - Vida S. Culbert, 92, of Oxford died Saturday, November 28, 1998 at Ledgeview Nursing Home.

She was born in Otisfield on January 19, 1906, the daughter of Frank and Lottie Allen Smith.

She graduated from Casco High School and Gorham Normal School. She had worked in the Oxford Town Office and retired from the trust department of Norway National Bank.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Union Veterans, the Oxford Historical Society, the Extension Service, Senior Citizens, Pythian Sisters, Retired Teachers' Association and she served on the board of the Oxford Library and was a member of the Oxford Congregational Church. She was married to Theodore Culbert who died in 1992.

Survivors include her daughter, Miriam Henderson, of Oxford and four grandchildren, Michael Henderson, Mary Taylor, Robert Henderson and Marsha Henderson. Four great grandchildren also survive.

Services were held on Tuesday, December 1, at the Oxford Congregational Church with Interment in Elmwood. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main Street, Norway.

Vigilyn B. Cummings
1998-04-09

WEST PARIS - Virgilyn B. Cummings, 69, of West Paris died Wednesday April 1, 1998, at her residence. She was born in Sumner on May 30, 1928, the daughter of Virgil and Annie Barrows Barrett.

She was a graduate of Buckfield High School in 1947. She married Clyde Cummings on June 28, 1952. Mr. And Mrs. Cummings lived in South Paris for years and lived in West Paris for the past 13 years. Mrs. Cummings worked for various local businesses throughout her life such as Norway Laundry, Norway Footwear, and Wilner's Manufacturing. She was known for close correspondence with letters to friends and family who meant the world to her. She loved to take photographs and enjoyed the company of her cats.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde, of West Paris; a son, Roger B. Cummings, of Lewiston; two sisters, Norma Newton, of Sumner and Eleanor Davenport, of Canton; two grandchildren Derek and Ashley Cummings of Virginia, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

There are no services at this time. There will be a graveside service later in the spring at Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris. Arrangements under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Kenneth Cummings
1998-06-04

TURNER Kenneth Cummings, 52, of Turner died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at his residence in Turner. He was born in Norway on January 18, 1946, the son of Arthur and Maxine Bonney Cummings.

He was a graduate of Oxford High School and attended Bliss College in Lewiston. Mr. Cummings had worked for many years for the Canadian National Railroad. He liked to fish, hunt, and play softball and basketball.

He is survived by one son, David of Auburn; one granddaughter, Shauna of Oxford and a long time companion, Nancy Decker.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Cummings' memory may be sent care of his son, David Cummings, 18 Plummer St., Apt. 126, Auburn, ME.

Nellie A. Cross
1998-06-11

Nellie A. Cross, 81, of South Paris died Saturday June 6, 1998, at the Clover Manor.

She was born in South Paris on September 13,1916, the daughter of Lewis and Lilla Smith Andrews. She was a graduate of Paris High School and attended college in Springfield, MA.

She married Edward Cross on September 1, 1941, and he died in 1968. Mrs. Cross worked for L.M. Longley & Son on Main Street in Norway for 33 years. She retired when she was 76 years old. She was a member of the Ladies Circle at the First Congregational Church of South Paris and the Thalian Club. She loved to do a variety of crafts.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis Sr. and Marilyn of Auburn and Phil and Ruth of Jacksonville, FL; a sister and brother-in-law Betty and Al Linscott of Sanford, FL; two grandchildren, Lewis Jr. and his wife Jeannette of Saratoga Springs, NY and Deanna and Paul Shaves of Germany and two great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandson Wayne and a sister Clarice

Funeral Services were held Tuesday at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris with Pastor Donald Cougle officiating. Interment followed at the Riverside Annex Cemetery.

Paul Revere Curtis
1999-01-07

Paul Revere Curtis Jr., 89, of Wiscasset, a direct descendent of the patriot, died Wednesday, December 30 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick following a brief illness.

Born in Boston, he was the son of Paul Revere Sr. and Helen M. Sprague Curtis, and spent his summers in Edgecomb.

From 1938 to 1942 Mr. Curtis was a member of the Maine State Police.

He lived in Farmington and Southington, Connecticut before moving to Wiscasset in 1982.

Mr. Curtis was a member of the Wiscasset Masons and a founding member of the Wiscasset Yacht Club. He enjoyed being with his family and good friends.

His wife of 48 years, Marjorie Towle, died in 1982.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Emery; a son, Timothy Towle Curtis; a brother, Sprague; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, January 9 at First Congregational Church of Wiscasset.

Gerald R. Cunningham
2000-08-17

Gerald Raymond "Gary" Cunningham, 53, of Boothbay Harbor, died Sunday, August 13 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, after a brief illness.

Born July 1, 1947 in Farmington, he was the son of the late Shirley Alexander and Mazie (Parlin) Cunningham. He was a life-long logger until he became disabled. He had worked with his father at Harry Crooker Construction, and in a paper mill near Skowhegan. He had also worked as a sternman for Richard Campbell. Later he worked at the local YMCA as a custodian for several years.

Mr. Cunningham enjoyed playing with electronic gadgets, fishing, all kinds of music and was known for his good sense of humor. He loved his scanner, liked shopping, riding in his car, horse racing at the fairs, off track betting with his brother-in-law, scratch off lottery tickets and the lottery.

He loved to spend time with his family, visiting all around the state.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Boothbay Harbor; three daughters, Juanita Wade Schweighauser of Northeast Harbor, Roxanne Shea of Chatham, Mass., and Daisy Cunningham of Pittsfield; one son, Joseph Paul Cunningham of Jefferson; one brother, Sam Kennedy of New Vineyard; four sisters, Kareen Nelson, Tracy Grover, and Zandy Long, all of Boothbay, and Mardelle Dawley of Saco; two step-brothers, Kenneth Eimen of South Carolina, and Alan Eimen of Boothbay Harbor; five step-children, Gary Manson Jr. of Topsham, Diana Holmes and Michelle Harmond, both of Boothbay Harbor, Lynne Smith of Brunswick, and Wayne Manson of Lisbon Falls; several grandchildren; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 19 at Zandy Long's home on Hidden Ridge Lane off the Hardwick Road in Boothbay. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate. A cookout will be held immediately after the service in Gary's memory.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Mrs. Lempi T. Cyr
1999-06-10

WEST PARIS - Lempi T. (Tamlander) Cyr, 77, of Pioneer Street, West Paris, died Sunday, June 6, 1999 at her residence.

Born in Temple, ME on April 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Toivo and Edla (Laaksonen) Tamlander and was educated in the local Greenwood school.

On January 25, 1941 she married Ernest Cyr, who predeceased her in 1986.

She worked for more than 30 years at Penley Corporation in the packing department before working at the Ledgeview Nursing Home in the housekeeping department.

A resident of West Paris for more than a half century, Mrs. Cyr was a member of the Universalist Church and a member of the Forward Fellowship of the Universalist Church. She was also very active in the Rebekah's of West Paris, the West Paris Historical Society, and West Paris Senior Citizens Group, Finnish-American Society, and the Friends of the West Paris Public Library.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Abbott of Lewiston and Barbara Dunham and her husband, Gilbert of Locke Mills; a son, Michael, of Greenwood; a sister, Helen Heath, of Norway; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, June 9, at the West Paris Universalist Church.

Those who wish may make donations in Mrs. Cyr's memory to their favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the care of the Andrews Funeral Home, Andrews Road, South Woodstock.

Mr. O'Neil J. Cyr
1999-10-21

SOUTH PARIS - O'Neil J. Cyr, 89, of South Paris died Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at Market Square Health Care Center.

He was born in Presque Isle on August 29, 1910 the son of Cyril and Clara Belanger Cyr.

He attended Presque Isle schools. He had been a woodworker at Paris Company. During WWII he worked in shipyards.

He married Martha Durgin on January 1, 1936; she passed away July 20, 1999.

He is survived by one daughter, Mabel and her husband, Wyman Kimball, of South Paris; three sons, Richard and his wife, Sandra, of Rockville, CT, Wayne of Manchester, NH and James and his wife, Rose Marie, of Portland; two brothers, Clarence Cyr of South Paris and Benny Cyr of Waterford; one sister, Florence Dufore of Portland; stepbrother, Hubert Levesque of NH and a stepsister, Jeannette Berry of NY; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, October 24, 1999 at 1 pm at the Woodlawn cemetery in North Waterford with the Rev. Gertrude DeCoteau officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the Maine Chapter, American Cancer Society, Box 456, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Mrs. Martha Durgin Cyr
1999-07-22

NORWAY - Martha Durgin Cyr, 79, of South Paris died Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Waterford on January 12, 1920, the daughter of Henry and Edith Stanley Durgin.

She was educated in Waterford schools and Norway High School.

Mrs. Cyr had been a housewife all her life, she was a crafter, loving all types of crafts; she also enjoyed gardening.

She married O'Neil J. Cyr on January 1, 1936.

She is survived by her husband of South Paris; one daughter; Mable, and her husband Wyman Kimball of South Paris; three sons, Richard and his wife Sandra of Rockville, CT., Wayne of Manchester, NH., and James and his wife Rose Marie of Portland; one brother, Hugh Durgin of N. Waterford; four sisters, Rita Allen of Cincinnati, OH, Theresa Crooker of Mechanic Falls, Joyce Rich of Acadia, FL, and Marilyn Curtis of South Paris; nine grandchildren, 21 Great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, July 22, at 2 pm at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris.
