Mr. Timothy Wiles

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Timothy Wiles, 55, of Bloomington, IN, died on July 17, in Bloomington. He was an associate professor of English at Indiana University.
He was born in Norway on October 11, 1947, to James and Ruth Wiles. He attended Oxford Hills High School and graduated in 1964 from Gould Academy in Bethel. He earned a B.A. in English from Antioch College in 1969, and a Ph.D. in English from Stanford University in 1975. He joined the English and Comparative Literature Faculty at Indiana University in 1973.
In 1975, Mr. Wiles was sent by Indiana University to aid in the establishment of the American Studies Center at Warsaw University. The ASC has been and continues to be a focal pint for international academic exchanges at Warsaw University. In 1980, he taught American Literature at the University of Hamburg. In 1981, he returned to Warsaw with his wife Mary McGann, as a Senior Fulbright lecturer for a two-year period. While there, the two of them coordinated the IU exchanges with Warsaw University and witnessed the imposition of martial law in the last days of Solidarity.
Professor Wiles directed the Polish Studies Center at IU for many years. During his long career promoting academic exchanges with Poland, he was the recipient of a Distinguished Medal of Service from Warsaw University for outstanding achievement in promoting Polish culture. In addition, Mr. Wiles was a visiting scholar at the University of Ghana and was associated with the School of Performing Arts and the National Dance Troupe of Ghana.
At IU, Professor Wiles taught drama, literary interpretation, literary criticism, performance theory and cultural studies, as well as freshman lecture courses. He developed a special course, which became very popular with students, on the literature of the Vietnam War. During his 30 years of teaching at IU, Mr. Wiles touched the lives of thousands of students. His passion for theater and dramatic literature was contagious, and many of his students went on to professional careers in education and theater. He also had an ability to counsel troubled students. He always made the time to talk with those who came to him seeking counsel and seemed to always find the right words to help them find the courage to overcome their troubles. At his memorial service in Bloomington on July 22, these words were spoken over and over by friends, colleagues and former students: "The world is a better place for Timothy Wiles having been in it."
Mr. Wiles was one of the earliest members of the Bloomington Playwrights Project and a tireless volunteer for many years at the Project, serving on its Board of Directors. The center stage at BPP was dedicated to and named for him.
In 1976, Mr. Wiles married Mary McGann of Newport, RI. The arrival of their son David Timothy Wiles in 1989 was the highlight of his life. He greatly enjoyed taking David snow boarding and skiing and spending summers with his family at their lakeside cabin in East Waterford that Tim and his father built together.
