Dana C. Douglass Jr.
1999-08-05

BETHEL - Dana C. Douglass Jr., 84, of Bethel died on July 30, at his residence with his family at his side.

Mr. Douglass was born in Portland on August 21, 1914, the son of Dana and Martha (Brackett) Douglass Sr. He was a graduate of Governor Dummer Academy, South Byfield, MA in 1933, and of Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH in 1937.

After graduating from college, Mr. Douglass was employed with an investment trust in Jersey City, NJ for three years prior to moving to Portland, where he established the Stanley-Dana Corp., a sound equipment company.

In 1939, he married Barbara Harte Anderson of Newton Center, MA. They lived in Portland for the next 10 years.

In 1948, Mr. Douglass reopened both the Bumpus Quarry in Albany and the Newry Mine. The mining operations provided pegmatites, which included the strategic mineral, mica, used for insulation in the planes and ships defending our country. In 1950, he relocated his family, his wife and four daughters to Bethel. With the closing of the mines, Mr. Douglass became employed at the Earth Station for Satellite Communications in Andover. He later formed his own company, Dana C. Douglass Association, Inc., in land surveying. He walked up and over many parcels of land in Bethel and surrounding towns, including the Sunday River Ski Resort area.

He would often offer unsubsidized surveying for causes such as churches, cemeteries, and schools. He also participated in other town activities, whether it was emceeing for a cause or as president of the PTA and president of the Bethel Area Health Center. One of his most important community supports was frequent donation of blood for the American Red Cross.

Mr. Douglass served as clerk of the West Parish Congregational Church for 22 years and was a Sunday School teacher and leader for the Pilgrim Fellowship for many years. He was a member of the Board of Soil and Water Conservation for the State of Maine for 11 years.

Mr. Douglass and his wife, Barbara, actively participated in the development of Mollyockett Day events. In 1974, the couple was honored with the Greater Bethel Chamber of Commerce Henry Hastings Award for community service and also life memberships in the Bethel Historical Society and Middle Intervale Meeting House.

Mr. and Mrs. Douglass recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

His greatest pleasures, other than his family, were gardening and golf. His flowers adorned many events in Bethel. The Douglasses also enjoyed many wonderful trips traveling in and out of the United States. Bethel remained his favorite place, and he always referred to it as Paradise.

Survivors include his wife of Bethel; four daughters, Cheryl Ann Douglass of Woburn, MA, DeeDee Douglass Kellogg and husband Benjamin of Bethel, Barbara Douglass Weeks and husband Peter of Dunbarton, NH, and Pamela Douglass Hutchins and husband Mark of Salisbury, NH; and six grandchildren, Todd and Bryan Kellogg, Brooke and Porter Weeks, and Andrea and Karen Hutchins.

A Memorial Service will be held at West Parish Congregational Church, Bethel, on Sunday, August 8, at 1 p.m., with the Reverends Brendon and Jean Bass officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Bethel.

Lorraine L. Dow
1999-01-07

WEST PARIS - Lorraine L. Dow, 80, of Mountain View Apartments, West Paris, died on Saturday, January 2, at the Ledgeveiw Nursing Home, where she had been a patient a short time.

Born January 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Alice (LeClair) Kummel. She graduated from Lynn English High School in Lynn, MA with the class of 1936. She married Richard H. Dow, who predeceased her in 1954.

A licensed cosmetologist with the state of Massachusetts, she worked for several years as a hair dresser before becoming a sales person for a beauty supply company in Lynn, MA. She was an avid follower of the happenings in Hollywood and enjoyed keeping up to date with all her favorite actors and actresses.

Surviving are a son, Clifford of Bryant Pond; two sisters: Claire Hartin of Lynn, MA and Virginia Harding of Venice FL; a grandson Clifford Dow II of Harrison and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Richard K. Dow and Robert W. Kane and a brother, Bud Kummel.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. Interment will be in the spring at the Buckfield/Damon cemetery in Buckfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite children's charity.

Julia M. Doyle
1998-11-26

Julia Mary Doyle, 88, of Trevett, daughter of Patrick and Sarah White Doyle, died Saturday, November 21 at the Country Manor.

She was born November 14, 1910 in Carchiveen, County Kerry, Ireland.

Arriving in Massachusetts in 1927 at the age of 17, she made her home in Cambridge, working as a governess, later for the Boston and Maine railroad and Natures Health Food Co. She was a frequent visitor to her sister, Mary Brewer of Boothbay Harbor, since 1928.

Ms. Doyle returned to Ireland in 1972, staying for 22 years, returning in 1995, after the passing of her sister, Katherine. She made her home with her niece, Florence and Stephen Hodgdon of Trevett.

She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Boothbay Harbor.

She was predeceased by her long-time friend, Chester Hill of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and two sisters, Mary Brewer Pinkham of Boothbay Harbor and Bridgette R. Teahon of Cambridge, Mass.

One of thirteen children, she is survived by one sister, Johanna O'Connor of Clovelly, Australia; many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

An hour of visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 27, at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay. A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor. Ms. Doyle's nephew, Father Martin Hayes from London, England, will officiate. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Services are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall of Boothbay.

Henry A. Drake, Sr.
1998-06-18

WEST PARIS Henry A. Drake, Sr., 94, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Ledgeview Nursing Home, where he had been a resident.

He was born in Kingfield on August 3, 1903, the son of the late Ernest E. and Carrie (Lothrop) Drake. He received his education in Livermore Falls Schools. On August 14, 1932, he wed the former Ruby Chamberlin, who predeceased him in 1983. He had called West Paris his home since 1995, coming from Dryden, where he lived for 10 years, and Livermore Falls, where he moved in 1941.

An employee of International Paper for more than 25 years, he worked in the lower mill in Livermore Falls for 23 years as a grinder operator. A member of the Senior Citizens Association in Dryden, he also belonged to the Odd Fellows of Canton. An avid candlepin bowler, he enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling. He loved his family and will be remembered for the advice he would give to his family on raising children. Mr. Drake was often heard saying, `You will have a handful with that one.'

Surviving are two sons, Henry Jr. and his wife Corinne of Kents Hill and Glendon and his wife Sandra of Hebron; two daughters, Emily Allen and her husband Chester of richmond and Sylvia Allen and her husband Ashley of West Paris; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her was predeceased by a daughter, Dawn De Etta, who died in 1938; his stepmother, Viola, who raised Henry; four brothers, Bernard, Ralph, Lester and Roy and three sisters, Lena Hatch, Ruth Tardy and Mary Bean.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the West Sumner Baptist Church. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Canton. Officiating at the services was Rev. Mr. Larry Thurlow. Serving as bearers were Dennis Allen, Bill and Adam Keach, Tim, Terry and James Drake.Those who wish make make memorial donations in Mr. Drakes' memory to the Maine Cancer Society, PO Box 553 DTS, Portland, ME 04112.

Edwin A. Dresser
1999-12-30

Edwin Abbott Dresser, 78, of Topsham, died Saturday, December 25 at his home. born in Hollis on September 18, 1921, he was the son of Norman and Leora Abbott Dresser.

Mr. Dresser grew up in South Boston and was a 1938 graduate of Mechanics High School. He entered the Navy Seabees in 1942 and served two years in Williamsburg, Virginia. He served with the Const. Batt. USNCTC and Sta. Crew NCTC Peary. Mr. Dresser completed LST Engine Navy Training School in Richmond, Va. becoming a First Class Machinist Mate. He was then transferred to amphibious USS LST 1073 in the South Pacific.

After being discharged, Mr. Dresser returned to Concord, New Hampshire where he went back to work for Hamel Music Service. In 1955 he moved to Rumford and went into business with Joe Ferris Sr. of Madison. In 1964 he moved to Topsham, where he continued to manage Ferris Music Company business until 1997.

On January 21, 1989 he married Joanne Rice.

Mr. Dresser enjoyed operating the original Lionel Train Sets.

He was a lifetime member of VFW and the American Legion Post of Rumford. He was also a member of the Boothbay Baptist Church in Boothbay.

Surviving, besides his wife of Topsham, is a stepson, Donald Austin of Conger, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Fuller of Boothbay Harbor and Suzanne LaPlaca of Edgecomb; one aunt, Alice Dresser of Marshfield, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane Files, and a stepson, George Brough.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 29 at Stetson's Funeral Home in Brunswick, with A. Roberts and Rev. Dan McNutt officiating. Committal prayers followed at Maplewood cemetery in Standish.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boothbay Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 64, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Fernand "Bidou" Dubois
1998-06-18

WESTFIELD, MA Fernand `Bidou' Dubois, 76, of Norway died Friday, June 12, 1998. at the Western Massachusetts Hospital after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada on November 4, 1921.

He lived in Norway, ME for 24 years coming from Springfield, MA. He worked as a painter in the Springfield area and in Maine for many years.

He leaves his wife, Agatha Gendron Dubois; five sons, Marcel and Robert Dubois of Springfield, MA, Jacques and Philip Dubois of Aggwam, MA, and Norman Dubois of Oxford; three daughters, Fabiola Dubois of Quebec, Lucie Diabo of West Springfield, MA, and Andree Holland of Westfield, MA; a sister Florentine Biron of Drummondville, Quebec; a brother, Roland Dubois, of Drummondville, Quebec; 13 grandchildren including Natasha and Nathan Dubois of Oxford and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Monday in the Sacred Heart Church in Feeding Hills, MA. Committal Services will be held at the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris with Father Lawrence Conley as Celebrant Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral, South Paris.

Agathe M. Dubois
1999-05-27

WESTFIELD, MA - Agathe M. Dubois, 78, formerly of Norway, died Sunday May 23, 1999 at the Renaissance Nursing Home.

She was born in Malvina, Quebec on March 9, 1931, the daughter of Alfred and Adeline Daigneault Gendron.

She married Fernand Dubois and he predeceased her in 1998.

Mrs. Dubois was a homemaker for most of her life. She and her husband lived in Springfield, MA for 20 years and later moved to Norway, where they resided together for 24 years.

She was a member of the St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Norway.

She is survived by five sons, Marcel and Robert both of Springfield, MA, Jacques and Philip both of Agawam, MA, and Norman of Oxford, ME; three daughters, Fabiola Dubois of Quebec, Lucie Diabo of West Springfield, MA, and Andree Holland of Wesfield, MA; three sisters, Marthe, Mariette, and Beata all of Quebec, four brothers Jean, George, Bachman, and Raymond all of Quebec, 13 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Fernand; three sisters, Adele, Theresa, and Jeannette, and one brother, Yvon.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, May 26 at the St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Norway with Father Mooreshead as celebrant. Interment followed at the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Paris was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur E. Duchette
1998-07-16

SOUTH PARIS - Arthur E. Duchette, 72, formerly of Mechanic Falls died Monday evening, July 6, 1998, at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris. He was born in Mechanic Falls, December 12,1925, the son of Wilfred and Blanche Davis Duchette.

He attended Mechanic Falls schools and faithfully served his country in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Duchette had been employed as a meat cutter at Needhams Market and he later worked at Gould and Scammon Co in Auburn. He was a life member and past commander of American Legion Post #150 in Mechanic Falls and was a past county commander. He also had been very active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

He married Beverly Purington, August 29,1947.

Survivors include his wife of South Paris; two daughters, Carol Keith of Lewiston and Sandra Berry and her husband, Donald, of Plymouth; two sons, Peter and his wife, Dee, of Poland and Mark and his wife, Gina, of Lewiston; three, sisters, Lena Scanlon of New York, Helen Perry and Pauline Wilson both of California; three brothers, Wilfred of Norway, Ramon of Mechanic Falls and Carl of Stoneham;10 grandchildren and

15 great grandchildren.

Mr. Duchette was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Pryor, and a brother, Pearl Duchette.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,Mechanic Falls with Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanic Falls. Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to the Maine Veterans Home, High Street, South Paris, ME, 04281.

William E. Duncan
2000-01-13

William E. Duncan, 62, died Monday, January 10 at St. Andrews Hospital.

He was born on September 28, 1937 in Johnson City, Tennessee, Mr. Duncan was a senior chief dental technician in the U.S. Navy after serving 24 years. He transferred to Brunswick Naval Air Station in the Fleet Reserve before retiring in 1978 to Boothbay Harbor. For 16 years, he worked for St. Andrews Hospital as a housekeeping supervisor. He also worked at Andersen Design Studio in East Boothbay and at the Boothbay Harbor Inn in maintenance. He was a financial officer and member of the American Legion.

Mr. Duncan was predeceased by a son, Andrew Westbrook Duncan.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Kathy Alley Duncan of Boothbay Harbor; one son, Chad Duncan of Boothbay; one sister, Edna Mae Mayton of Nashville, Tennessee; one grandson, Brady P. Duncan of Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 13 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay with Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating. A committal service will follow at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta at 1 p.m.

Donations may be made in his memory to the American Legion. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
