Daisy Doughty, 91
2000-06-30

Daisy Doughty, 91, of Gray, died last Tuesday.

She was born in Woodland, ME, on August 31, 1908, the daughter of Chester and Sephronia Wilkins Trenholm. She had lived in Gray since 1964, moving here from Lynn, MA.

Mrs. Doughty was a member of the First Congregational Church of Gray, Gray Historical Society and the Gray Library. She taught ceramics for 40 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert W. Doughty, and her daughter, Marilyn F. Build. She is survived by one son, Albert W. Doughty, Jr., of Gray; a granddaughter, Susand Fleck, of Naples; and two great-grandchildren, Dustin and Jacob Fleck, of Naples.

A graveside service will be held at 9 A.M. on Saturday, July 8, in Gray Village Cemetery, with Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 155, Gray, ME 04039, or the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Melva Dodge
1999-11-25

Melva Dodge, 91, of Bath, died Thursday, November 18 at the Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a lengthy illness.

Born in Anita, Penn., May 26, 1908, she was a daughter of William H. and Ida Himes Bullock. She was a ninth generation descendant of John Howland and who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower.

Mrs. Dodge attended schools in Elkins, West Virginia prior to her family moving to Belgrade, Maine. She then graduated from Belgrade High School and later attended MCI in Pittsfield and Farmington Normal School. For a year she taught at the Currier School in Mt. Vernon.

On May 29, 1937 she married H. Winfield Dodge and made their home in East Boothbay, where they operated The Little Anchor Lobster Shop on Ocean Point Road for many years, retiring in 1970.

They wintered in Georgia and Florida for a number of years, before moving to Bath.

While living in East Boothbay, she was a member of the United Methodist Church, past Worthy Matron and 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 54, The Rebekahs of Hallowell. Since living in Bath she was a member of the United Methodist Church, and a member of the Bath Senior Citizens. She was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Caring for her family was a very rewarding part of her life. She also enjoyed singing, writing, reading, gardening, playing bridge and Bid-Whist.

Surviving are her husband, H. Winfield Dodge of Bath; three daughters, Joyce Cantell of Bath, Sharon Riley of Woodbridge, Va., and Gail Marzluff of Hillsborough, N.C.; a sister, Aliette Bullock of Portland; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November, November 23 at the United Methodist Church in Bath with Rev. Russell Peppe officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mr. William R. Dinneen Jr.

BRIDGTON - William R. Dinneen Jr. of Bridgton died unexpectedly at his residence Saturday, July 22, 2000.

Mr. Dinneen was born July 29, 1942 in Willimantic, CT and was the son of the late William Sr. and Loretta (Truska) Dinneen.

He graduated from Bridgton High School and from the University of Maine in Orono.

He was employed as a lumber and land trader.

Mr. Dinneen is survived by a cousin, Robert Bergeron of Massachusetts, and many friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton. Burial will take place in Windham, CT at a later date.

Dora Dingley
2000-06-22

Born in Greenwood on April 17, 1908, the daughter of Ernest C. and Rose Frances Cole Mason, she was educated in Locke Mills schools. She worked at E.L. Tebbetts Spool Co. for many years.

She married Norwood Ford in 1934. He died in 1981. She then married Elmer Dingley in 1982 he died in 1989.

She was a member of the Sunset Chapter of the Rebekah's in Bethel, Jefferson Chapter# 89 O.E.S. in Bryant Pond , Locke Mills Union Church and Ladies Circle , Locke Mills Community Club , Mt. Abram Fish & Game , and the Bethel, Bryant Pond and West Paris Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a stepson and his wife, David and Ruth Dingley of Norway; two brothers, Irvin Mason of Machis and Lawrence Mason of Canton, several nieces and nephews, among them Marcia Bernhardt of Machis.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. Burial was in the Pleasant Valley cemetery in So. Paris. Visiting hours were Monday evening at the funeral home.

Mrs. Abbie G. DeGrandi
2000-04-13

BRIDGTON - Abbie G. DeGrandi, 94, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Bridgton Health Care Center.

Born in Bridgton on November 27, 1905, she was the daughter of Edward L. and Elizabeth YoungAllen . She was educated in Bridgton schools. She married Joseph DeGrandiwho died in 1966.

Mrs. DeGrandi worked in local shoe shops, worked in the kitchen at Camp Woodland in South Bridgton and at the corn shop in Fryeburg. She had lived in the Bridgton area all of her life.

Survivors include a brother, Rodney (Buster) Allen of Bridgton; two sisters, Ethel Damon of Norway and Florence Ayer of West Paris and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Degrandi was predeceased by a son Joseph.

Graveside services will be held at the Forest Hill cemetery at 11a.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2000.

Arrangements are under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home.

Lawrence F. Fortier

Lawrence F. Fortier, 70, of Otisfield, died Thursday morning, April 23, 1998, at his home on the Scribner Hill Road. He was born in this same home on January 12, 1928, the son of Fred and Velma (Edwards) Fortier.

Mr. Fortier served in the U. S. Navy in World War II in the South Pacific.

On June 20,1947, he married the former Pauline Hanscom.

Mr., Fortier worked as a caretaker at Camp Truda in Otisfield which closed in 1958. He worked as a licensed plumber for many years and most recently worked at Camp Fernwood in Poland.

Mr. Fortier enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and in his later years, bird watching as well as visits from his great-granddaughter, Hannah. His grandchildren were a great joy to him.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Henry Keisman of Otisfield and Julie and Ben Ashley of Conway, NH; three sisters and their husbands, Louise and Norman Spencer of Norway, Catherine and Charles Spencer of East Oxford, Eleanor and Sulo Pulkkinen of East Oxford; two brothers, Fred Fortier, III and his wife Dottie of Gray and Lindley Fortier and Joyce of Oxford; two grandsons and their wives, Barry and Gail Keisman of Otisfield and Mark and Lisa Keisman of South Paris; two granddaughters, Amy and Licia Ashley of Conway, NH and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Keisman of Otisfield.

Graveside services were held Tuesday Elmwood Cemetery, Rayville Road,

Otisfield. Pastor Lloyd Waterhouse officiated and the eulogy was given by Bob Spencer. Contributions may be made in his name, to the Oxford/Otisfield Rescue, c/o Otisfield Town Office, Otisfield, ME 04270. Arrangements were by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.

Dora E. Gammon

Dora E. Gammon, 89, of the Gammon Road, Hartford, widow of Carl Gammon, died Tuesday afternoon, April 28, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for several days.

Mrs. Gammon was born in Turner, the daughter of the late Clifford and Sadie (Holland) Starbird, on June 9, 1908. She attended Turner schools.

Mrs. Gammon married Carl Gammon on Feb. 21, 1925, and he pre-deceased her in 1980.

A resident of Hartford practically all her life, she and her husband operated a beef cattle operation. Everyone on the farm had a job, and Mrs. Gammon's job was hay mowing, which she really enjoyed. Mrs. Gammon enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and in her later years she made and gave away many afghans. She also was a bird enthusiast, enjoying feeding and watching the wild birds around her home. She was devoted to her two dogs, Dash and Tammy, and especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce McNeil, of Sumner and Rosalie Moulton, of Norway; two grandsons, Alan and Dennis McNeil, of Hartford, whom she and her husband raised from infancy, a niece, Thurlie Fish, as well as five other grandchildren, and three nephews.

Friends may call at the Andrews Funeral Home, Buckfield, Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Interment in the Buckfield/Damon Cemetery, Buckfield.

Norman H. Harvey

RUMFORD - Norman H. Harvey, 88, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at the Rumford Hospital, Rumford, Maine.

A resident of the area most of his life, he resided on Plymouth Avenue, Rumford.

He was born in Rumford on July 9, 1911, the son of Morton and Elizabeth (Hinkley) Harvey, and graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford Class of 1929.

Ever since high school he was a musician and singer, and well known for his yodeling and ability to play seven instruments including, violin, banjo, ukulele, guitar, harmonica, mandolin and the banjo-mandolin.

He had been a part of the Silver Slipper's Band which was very active in the Greater Rumford area in the late 1920s.

Mr Harvey had worked for Farly Construction of Albany, New York and West Yard of Portland and then as an electrician at the Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford for over 32 years until retirement in 1976.

In the early 1950s he served as a volunteer fireman with the Rumford Fire Department; was a member of the Boise Cascade Paper Co. 25 Year Club, and was a member of the I.B.E.W. Electrical Workers Union.

He was married in Rumford, Maine on June 5, 1948, to Pearl E. Stowe who died in Rumford on Dec. 10, 1989.

Survivors include three daughters, Sally Gay of South Paris, Joyce Libby Hartman of Rumford, and Nancy Harvey of Clinton, MA; two sons, Richard Harvey of South Paris, and Brian Harvey and his wife Suzanne of Rumford; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mrs Gail Smith and two sisters, Mrs Ruth Albert and Mrs Pearl Taylor.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, June 23, 2000 at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Officiating was Rev. Frank Haines, pastor of the Rumford United Methodist Church, Rumford, Maine.

Music selections included The Old Rugged Cross and In The Garden.

Committal services were conducted by Rev. Haines and a special song Flying Free was presented on the flute by Mr Harvey's granddaughter, Navana Routhier.

Pall bearers were Brian Harvey, Richard Harvey, Richard Routhier, Norman Young Jr., Stuart Smith and Joseph Sullivan.

Donations may be made in his memory to Androscoggin Home Health Services, P.O. Box M., Rumford, ME 04276.

Barbara Doe Thurber

SOUTH PARIS - Barbara Doe Thurber, 88, died June 26, 2000, at Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris. She had been a resident there for the past six months.

She was the daughter of Willis Hillman and Florence Mabel (Merrill) Doe and was born in Medford, MA. She was educated in Medford schools, graduating from Medford High School and Burdett Business College.

On March 26, 1932, in Medford, she married Jesse Wyman Thurber and they lived in Medford until purchasing property in Poland, ME, and moving there in 1948. They remained on that property until November, 1999.

Mrs. Thurber loved music. She sang and played the piano and was a choir director at the Pleasant St. Baptist Church in Mechanic Falls for a number of years in the 1950s and 1960s. She enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles, loved cats and shared her home with many of them over the years and enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada and to several European countries, usually in the company of her daughter.

She was interested in genealogy and belonged to a number of organizations, including the Maine Old cemetery Association, the Maine Historical Piscataqua Pioneers and the Sons and Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury, MA. She researched for many years working on an update of a Doe genealogy that had been published in 1918 and also worked with a cousin on a Smith Genealogy.

She is survived by her husband, Jesse W. Thurber, of Windham; sons, Willis M. Thurber, of Jacksonville, FL, and Arthur W. Thurber, of Bennington, NH; daughter, Jeanne B. Thurber of Windham; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her only brother, Robert E. Doe, died May 29, 1999.

There will be no visiting hours and no funeral service. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m.on Saturday, July 1, in Riverside Cemetery, Cornish, ME.
