Gabrielle Ann Marie Varney-Cothran

PORTLAND - Gabrielle Ann Marie Varney-Cothran, 47 days old, died Saturday July 29, 2000 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Our precious Gabrielle left us after a courageous battle on July 29, much loved by mother Jessica Cothran and father Dwayne Varney, maternal grandparents Tina and Mike Cothran, great great grandmother Cecile Gurney, step-grandfather Scott Sampson, paternal grandparents Chris Lansley and Janice Steffl-Lansley and Evan Varney, great-grandparents Lottie and Everett McKay and Ernest Merchant, Don and Phyllis Cothran, Thomas and Doris Leeman.

In her short life she made many friends and was loved by many, she was beautiful, brave and strong during her short journey here on earth.

Family and friends attended funeral services on Monday, July 31, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls with a visitation prior to the service. Interment was in the Riverside cemetery in Oxford.

Verna Bailey Garneau

NORWAY - Verna Bailey Garneau, 78, of Norway died unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, July 26, 2000.

She was born in Dixville, Quebec, Canada on April 28, 1922, the daughter of Archie and Lizzie Egleston Bailey.

She was employed as a caregiver at the former Andrews Nursing Home, which is now Market Square Health Care Facility and also worked at Cornwall Industries.

She married Johnny Garneau on September 15, 1947; he died on December 4, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Archill "Archie" Garneau of Oxford; two grandsons, John Garneau of Vancouver, WA, and Sean Garneau of Mechanic Falls; two sisters, Eunice Paige of Coaticook Quebec, and Lois Bryant (Arthur) of Austin, Quebec; a sister-in-law, Alice Bailey (and the late Wallace) of Dixville, Quebec and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Viola Stewart of Danville, VT.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. Visitation was prior to the services.

Flora E. Eaton
1999-04-08

LEWISTON - Flora E. Eaton, 83, died Friday, April 2, at a Lewiston hospital, following a brief illness.

Born in Deer Isle on April 30, 1915, the daughter of Asa and Florence Weed Eaton, Miss Eaton was raised and attended schools in Pownell. She enjoyed playing beano and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by a sister, Kathleen L. Eaton of Lewiston; a brother, Whitney J. Eaton of New Haven, CT; a niece, Flora Richardson of Bridgton; a nephew, Bertrand Bronn of Scarborough; and several other great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Marguerite (Peggy) Sylvain and Rachel Kane.

Visiting hours were held on Monday at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton. Burial will be at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland at a later date.

Mrs. Lillian M. Eaton
1999-11-18

LEWISTON - Lillian M. Eaton, 72, widow of James Eaton, Jr. of Rumford Center died Friday, November 11, at Central Maine Medical Center where she had been a patient for one week.

She was born on April 23, 1927, in Rumford, the daughter of Joseph and Althea Niman Hebert. She was educated in Rumford schools and had been employed at Diamond Match in Peru for more than six years as a floor lady. She also worked at Bass Shoe in Rumford and DeCoster's in Turner.

Survivors include three sons and two daughter-in-laws, James III, Brian and Elena, and Randy and Christine, all of Rumford Center; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two half sisters, Mrs. Bernard (Reanne) Frost of Peru and Mrs. Emile (Crystal) LaBerge of Freeport; two half brothers, Harold Hebert of Peru and Freddie Hebert of Livermore.

Mrs. Eaton was predeceased by a daughter, Rachael Henry, and two half brothers, Bruce and Dick Hebert.

William C. Eberhardt Sr.
1998-06-18

William C. Eberhardt Sr., 80, of Trevett, died Sunday, June 14 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born November 11, 1917 in Morristown, New Jersey, he was the son of Henry and Gertrude (Landmesser) Eberhardt.

Mr. Eberhardt is survived by his wife Lorraine (Miller) Eberhardt of Trevett; two children, William C. Eberhardt Jr. of California, and Joan Hensley of Florida; two stepchildren, David Thornton of Idaho and Dale Thornton of Minnesota; and a brother, Ezra H. Eberhardt.

Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 54 Church Street, Belfast.

Lester C. Eckert Sr.
1999-09-09

Lester C. Eckert Sr., 71, of Alna, died at his home on Wednesday, September 1.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, June 23, 1928, he was the son of Robert and Ethel (Randall) Eckert. He grew up in Huntington, Long Island, New York, attending schools there.

Mr. Eckert married the former Agnes V. Hake on March 28, 1948, and for most of his career owned and operated Eckert Trucking Co., in New York. In 1985, the couple came to their home in Alna.

He was an avid model airplane enthusiast, having built many scale replicas from balsa wood. He also was a longtime golfer and loved playing the organ.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, of Alna; two sons, Lester C. Jr. of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., and Lawrence H. of Alna; two daughters, Victoria M. Drexel of Livermore Falls, and Pamela C. George-Bailey of Alna; two brothers, Howard McKillip of Bryant Pond, and Robert Eckert Jr. of North Carolina; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Saturday, September 4 at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta, with Rev. Jim Wade officiating. Burial was at the Sheepscot cemetery following the service.

Irma R. Edmunds

Irma R. Edmunds

Irma R. Edmunds, a resident of the Lincoln Home in Newcastle for the past six years, died Monday, September 18, at the age of 91.

Born December 6, 1908 in Ironton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Frank Amos and Edna (Lambert) Ratcliff. Mrs. Edmunds graduated from Ashland Senior High School in Ashland, Kentucky, and later attended Boyd Business School in Washington, D.C.

She worked at the Globe Distributing Company in Washington, D.C. until her marriage to George Storm Edmunds in 1936. The Edmunds family moved to Maine in 1961, after spending several vacations in the Pemaquid area. They built their home in Pemaquid, on the Pemaquid Trail. George entered the ministry at this time.

Mrs. Edmunds was a life member of Areme Chapter #10, O.E.S., in Washington, D.C. She was also a member of the Pemaquid Chapter, NSDAR, and the Oakland-Sidney Methodist Church.

Her husband, George, predeceased her. He died while on a pastoral exchange trip to West Germany in 1978. Her son, Frank, died in 1967, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Survivors include a son, Robert H. Edmunds III and his wife, Janice of Nobleboro; two daughters, Mrs. Georgene Turner and her husband, James of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nancy Pelton and her husband, Henry of Boothbay; one niece, Kathleen Adams of Penn.; one nephew, Harold Marsh of Beltsville, Md., as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street in Damariscotta on Saturday, September 23 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.

Edwin A. Dresser
1999-12-30

Edwin Abbott Dresser, 78, of Topsham, died Saturday, December 25 at his home. born in Hollis on September 18, 1921, he was the son of Norman and Leora Abbott Dresser.

Mr. Dresser grew up in South Boston and was a 1938 graduate of Mechanics High School. He entered the Navy Seabees in 1942 and served two years in Williamsburg, Virginia. He served with the Const. Batt. USNCTC and Sta. Crew NCTC Peary. Mr. Dresser completed LST Engine Navy Training School in Richmond, Va. becoming a First Class Machinist Mate. He was then transferred to amphibious USS LST 1073 in the South Pacific.

After being discharged, Mr. Dresser returned to Concord, New Hampshire where he went back to work for Hamel Music Service. In 1955 he moved to Rumford and went into business with Joe Ferris Sr. of Madison. In 1964 he moved to Topsham, where he continued to manage Ferris Music Company business until 1997.

On January 21, 1989 he married Joanne Rice.

Mr. Dresser enjoyed operating the original Lionel Train Sets.

He was a lifetime member of VFW and the American Legion Post of Rumford. He was also a member of the Boothbay Baptist Church in Boothbay.

Surviving, besides his wife of Topsham, is a stepson, Donald Austin of Conger, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Fuller of Boothbay Harbor and Suzanne LaPlaca of Edgecomb; one aunt, Alice Dresser of Marsh-field, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, great-great-grand-children and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane Files, and a stepson, George Brough.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 29 at Stetson's Funeral Home in Brunswick, with A. Roberts and Rev. Dan McNutt officiating. Committal prayers followed at Maplewood cemetery in Standish.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boothbay Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 64, Boothbay, ME 04537

Mr. Harry J. Egan
1999-06-17

BRIDGTON - Harry J. Egan, 70, died Friday, June 11, at the Bridgton Health Care Center.

Born in Boston, MA on September 9, 1928, the son of Harry and Margurite Milligan Egan, he was educated in Newton, MA schools and graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1946. He then went on to graduate from King Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1950, in King Point, NY. Mr. Egan was a retired Captain from the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the Retired Merchant Marines Association and and the Kings Point Alumni. He also served with the Navy reserves for 10 years.

He had lived in Harrison for the last year and prior to that, had lived in Bridgton since 1973.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Egan of Harrison; two sons, Patrick Egan of Raymond and Mark Egan of Otisfield; two granddaughters, Abi Egan of Otisfield and Maddison Egan of Raymond and a sister, Mary Egan of Waban, MA.

A memorial graveside service will be held on June 19, at 11 a.m. at the Forest Hill Annex cemetery in Bridgton. Arrangements are under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

Adelaide B. Eifler
1999-06-03

Adelaide Berghorn Eifler, age 77, passed away in Portland on Tuesday, June 1.

Born January 21, 1922 and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, where she met her husband David (the boy next door), she earned a Bachelor's degree from Skidmore College and a Master of Arts from Columbia University.

Mrs. Eifler was accomplished in the field of business administration education before becoming a homemaker, devoted wife and mother of two sons whom she raised in Bergenfield, New Jersey. She was active in numerous volunteer activities and enjoyed her adopted home in Boothbay Harbor for more than 25 years.

Survivors include her two sons, David Eifler of Berkeley, California, and Steven Eifler of Tempe, Arizona; one grandson, Camilo Eifler of Berkeley, California; two brothers, Charles William Berghorn of Pinehurst, North Carolina and George Berghorn of Elmhurst, Illinois.

She was predeceased by her husband David in 1995.

Friends may attend a memorial service on Saturday, June 5 from 5-7 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Town of Boothbay Harbor Waterfront Park, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or to the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden, 1 Oak Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Lucille E. Eldridge
2000-05-25

Lucille Eldridge, 69, died on Saturday, May 13 at home in Edgecomb after a long illness. The cause of death was heart failure.

She was the daughter of Joseph and Ernestine Lambert. She was born in Somerville, Mass. and graduated from Somerville High School in 1948, and earned a B.S. in music at Lowell State College in 1953. Mrs. Eldridge was married to Warren Eldridge in 1954. She was a member of American Legion Post #54 Auxiliary in Wiscasset. The family would like to thank Dr. Calvin Yates and friends at Miles Home Health/Hospice during difficult times. Her interests were her grandson, family pets, eating out, and reading, especially newspapers in great detail. Survivors include her husband Warren, daughter Amy Bryant, and grandson Peter Bryant, both of South China. A nephew Bob Wright lives in Atlanta, Ga.

She was buried next to her parents in the Evergreen Cemetery, Wiscasset.
