Albert S. Eaton Sr.
2004-02-26

Albert Sauveur Eaton Sr., 70, formerly of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts and a resident of Fryeburg and Southport, died Thursday, February 19 of complications related to Parkinson's Disease at Merriman House, North Conway, New Hampshire where he had lived for four years.

He was born on March 24, 1933 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of George and Mary Isabella (Sauveur) Eaton of Belmont, Massachusetts. His grandfather was Albert Sauveur, a world-renowned metallurgist who was the first to X-ray steel. His survivors are Carla W. Eaton, his wife, and his children Deborah (Mrs. George Malone) of Bolton, Massachusetts, Johanna (Mrs. Nicholas Rioux) of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Albert S. Eaton, Jr. of Center Conway, New Hampshire and six grandchildren. His sisters are Emily Frances (Mrs. Charles Mundo) of Islesboro, and Mary Prince (Mrs. Melvin Lee) of Hoboken, New Jersey.

Albert was raised in Belmont, Massachusetts attending Shady Hill School, Cambridge and Belmont Hill School, Belmont. He graduated from Milton Academy in 1951 and Harvard University in 1955. While at Harvard he was a member of the Fox Club and Hasty Pudding. In 1967, he graduated from the Program for Management Development 14 at Harvard Business School. Upon graduation from Harvard University, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the United States Marine Corps and celebrated the November 10th Marine Corps birthday faithfully until 2002.

He worked for United Shoe Machinery in Beverly, Massachusetts in engineering management from 1962 until 1969. In 1970 he moved to Fryeburg to become Vice President in charge of manufacturing at Yield House in North Conway. While there he was responsible for the design and manufacturing of several new Yield House products, his best known being the popular saltbox dollhouse.

It was the success of the dollhouse that led him to leave Yield House and establish his own wooden toy and dollhouse business at his residence on the Main Street of Fryeburg. His company, named "My Uncle," became a well-known name through his dollhouse kits in several architectural styles that were popular among miniature collectors. Several are housed in well-known museums in this country. Parkinson's Disease forced him to close his company in the mid-1980s but he continued working for a few years as an engineering consultant.

His interests were varied as were his community commitments. In the late 1950s, he designed a 24' steam powered tugboat named Jupiter with the big "E" on the smokestack. This was his pride and joy -- plying the waters off Southport Island where he summered.

He was an avid collector of miniature cast iron stoves, working steam whistles, antiques and cannons -- one of which weighed 200 pounds. As a guest cannoneer with the Portland Symphony, he added resounding booms from his cannon as the 1812 Overture was performed.

He served as Fryeburg Fair Farm Museum Curator for seven years though his involvement with the Museum began in 1975. As chairman of the Fryeburg Bicentennial Committee, he proposed and saw completed the purchase, dismantling, and barn raising of an antique Fryeburg barn on Fryeburg Fair Association property. It is that barn that serves as the Farm Museum at the Fryeburg Fair. He served as a Fryeburg Fair Trustee and as President of the Fryeburg Historical Society. At Christ Church Episcopal in North Conway, he served as Vestry member and Senior Warden during which time he designed and built the lanterns that grace the church's interior casting the shadows of crosses on the ceiling.

A lifelong interest of his was the English language and grammar - in particular, the misuse of each.

When Parkinson's Disease handicapped him, he turned to writing poetry, both serious and humorous, always delighting family and friends with his works. His keen mind and dry humor were evident in all he wrote, a man of many talents -- unknown to some as he was a quiet gentleman but he could rise to any occasion with superb humor.

A committal service will be held at a later date at Swan Point cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island. As desired, memorial donations may be made to The American Parkinson's Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10305-1946.
