R. Paul Freed
2004-04-22

R. Paul Freed, of Dade City, Fla. died at his home the morning of April 6, 2004, his 88th birthday. He was in good health and his death was unexpected.

He was born in Guatemala City to missionary parents, and soon moved back to the U.S. He grew up in the midwest and he and Dorothy were married in 1944 and enjoyed 60 years together.

Mr. Freed was educated at Millikin University, Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary. He was a Presbyterian minister for 35 years and in 1958 was awarded a doctor of divinity degree by Millikin. After he retired from full-time ministry in 1973, Paul and Dorothy moved to Southbury, Conn. where he held interim positions with several churches before fully retiring in 1980.

He had career-long friendships with both Bob Luccock and Walter Eastwood who retired to the Boothbay area.

While at Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1943 to 1948, he was the assistant minister and was impressed with the Brick Church's visions for its nursery school and handbell choirs as well as the importance of great dignity in worship.

At College Hill Presbyterian Church in Easton, Penn. from 1948 to 1958, he led the establishment of its nursery school, handbell choirs and several youth groups as well as the addition of its education building.

Mr. Freed was the first pastor of Pompton Valley Presbyterian Church in Pompton Plains, N.J. from 1958 to 1972, and led the establishment of handbell choirs and a strong youth program. He was instrumental in the organization of many events that added vibrancy to the congregation.

From 1947 to 1975 he and his family loved to vacation at their cabin, Spruce Lodge, on the north end of Barters Island. The family shared this wonderful resource during the 1960s and early 1970s by sponsoring weekly summer church youth camps. Paul appreciated the friendship of people of the Trevett and Boothbay area over the years. Mr. Emerson, Lowell Greenleaf, Jerry Hyson, and Willard McCabe all helped keep the buildings and the generator maintained. Stan Hodgdon and his family of the Trevett store supplied groceries and would often relay messages up river before the cabin had a phone. He had great respect for business people like Charlie Anderson and Earl Gaw, Clayton Dodge, Bob Grover, Fred Blake and Fran Pierce.

His hobbies included antique cars and photography of his personal and church families. Stemming from his and Dorothy's time in New York City, his love of music and theater never waned.

Starting in 1981, Paul and Dorothy spent winters at Travelers Rest Airstream park in Florida and moved there permanently in 1988. They enjoyed traveling around the country with their Airstream trailer visiting their relatives and seeing North America including Alaska, Canada and Mexico.

His grandchildren, and later his great-grandchildren, looked forward to receiving weekly letters that helped keep him close to the youngest members of the family.

He was a capable speaker, historian and wonderful storyteller. He read actively and wrote regularly for the Travelers Rest weekly newspaper.

In addition to Dorothy and two of his three sisters, he is survived by children, John of Forest Lake, Minn., Martha of Auburn, David of Reading, Mass. and Southport and Debbie of Kaysville, Utah, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Travelers Rest on April 10 with most of his family and many of his friends in attendance. Memorial contributions may be made to The Paul Freed Memorial Fund, Box 821, Forest Lake, MN 55025.
