Helen T. Gardner
1999-05-20

Harrison - Helen T. Gardner, 67, of Harrison died Friday, May 14, 1999 at home with her family around her.

She was born at the Thomes farm on Maple Ridge in Harrison on July 3, 1931, daughter of C. Leslie and Alice Stearns Thomes.

She attended a local one-room school and graduated from Bridgton Academy in the Class of 1950.

She married Ralph R. Gardner of Waterford. They lived for a short time in Texas before he was shipped overseas.

They later resided at Norway Lake and then built a home on Maple Ridge.

She worked for many years at the family-owned business, New England Horse Supply, manning the mobile unit at fairs and horse shows.

A warm-hearted, generous person, she was called Gram by many young people.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Edwin L. and his wife, Opal; four grandchildren, Jason and Jeremy Baker, Becky and Nathan Gardner; two sisters, Mary Carlson and Barbara Carlson and her husband, Robert, all of Harrison.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Allison G. Baker, in 1990 and a sister,Constance Bray in 1991.

Committal services were held on Wednesday, May 19, at Maple Ridge Cemetery, Harrison. The family requested that flowers be omitted. If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, Fryeburg or Harrison Historical Society. Arrangements under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Sarah Wilson Garrett
1998-06-12

Topsham, Maine - Sarah Wilson Garrett, 76, a Gray resident for many years, died Wednesday.

Born in Rockland, Maine, the daughter of Earle Farnsworth and Lucy Jacobs Wilson, Sr., Mrs. Garrett was raised in Gray and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1938, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Vermont in 1941 and from Yale Law School in 1944.

Mrs. Garrett was an enthusiastic Girl Scout, attaining honors as a Golden Eaglet. In 1934, she won the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Garrett had a brief private law practice in New Haven, CT, before a distinguished career with the Internal Revenue Service, from which she retired in 1986 as Head of the Exempt Organizations Branch of the Chief Counsels' Office. She was a member of the Connecticut, District of Columbia and Maryland bars, and of the American Bar Association.

She was an avid reader, who loved animals and crossword puzzles. She was active in the community as a volunteer, a dedicated Episcopalian and a longtime Communicant of St. Anne's Church in Annapolis.

Devoted to her family, Mrs. Garrett returned to Maine from Maryland in 1997 to be close to her family.

She married Crombie J. D. Garrett, of Round Bay, Maryland, on October 12 of 1944. She is survived by her husband; one son, Crombie J. D. Garrett, Jr.; a grandson, James S. Garrett and a granddaughter, Katharine M. Garrett, both of Yarmouth; her brother, Earle F. Wilson, Jr., of Gray; and six nephews, a niece and a grandniece.

Allen Gass
1999-04-08

NORWAY - Allen Gass, 67 of Christian Ridge Road South Paris died suddenly Saturday morning, April 3, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital following a heart attack.

He was born in Greenfield, MA, the eldest son of Alfred and Elizabeth Swayze Gass.

He attended Deerfield Academy, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Bowdoin College and received a MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Gass was a Civil Engineer, working in many countries throughout his life. He worked on mines and dams in remote areas of Canada,on skyscrapers in Boston and other major U.S. cities,and highway projects in Bolivia. Most recently he served as a principal with McPhail Associates,where his projects included consulting on the Central Artery Project in Boston.

Throughout his life Mr. Gass loved the outdoors, spending many happy hours hiking,camping and skiing with his family. For several years he was a regular at Mt.Abram ski area,and once hiked the Maine section of the Appalachian Trail.

He will be remembered locally for his work with the Paris Utility District which he joined as a member of the board in 1985 and chaired since 1988. He recently joined the Board of the Norway-Paris Solid Waste district and was on the town budget committee.

Before and after retirement he enjoyed "improving" the house and surrounding lands of his property on Christian Ridge Road. He could often be seen driving a bulldozer down into the woods to blaze new trails,digging ponds with a backhoe attached to his old tractor, building windmills and planting trees.

In the past few years he has concentrated on restoring old stone walls on his property,and liked saying "good fences make good neighbors". Mr. Gass was a promising wood carver who enjoyed taking classes to improve his skills. Finally,he was a generous and thoughtful neighbor, during the Ice storm of '98, he stayed very busy helping to clear roads and making sure that people had what they needed to be comfortable.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ann B. Gass of South Paris; six children, Thomas Gass of Seattle,WA, Katherine Walker of Lincoln,MA, Amanda Towne of Methuen,MA, Anne Gass of Gray, ME, and twins Elizabeth Scully of Lyndhurst, OH and Victoria Gass, now working in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was also the proud grandfather of 15.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday,April 10 at 11 am at the Gass residence, 203 Christian Ridge Road, South Paris. An outdoor service with a reception following is planned. Arrangements are by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Bowdoin College Alumni Fund, Stephens Memorial Hospital or the Appalachian Mountain Club.

William F. Gatchell
1999-02-11

NORWAY - William F. Gatchell, 52 of Crockett Ridge Road died unexpectedly Monday at his home.

He was born in Lewiston, March 15, 1946 the son of Hiram and Elvie Liirnatta Gatchell, Jr and graduated from Oxford Hills High School.

He worked at Conrad and Knight IGA in South Paris before becoming manager of Casco Bank in South Paris.

Mr. Gatchell was currently a Vice President at Norway Savings Bank where he had worked for many years.

He had coached Farm Team and Babe Ruth baseball and was an original organizer of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Gatchell enjoyed bowling and had been the treasurer of the bowling league at one time. He was past president of the Norway Country Club, a former member of the Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club, a member of HOPE and a member of the Second Congregational Church where he has held various offices including deacon and trustee.

He enjoyed working out, gardening and birding and he had served in the National Guard.

On October 27,1967 he married Lynette Titus.

Survivors include his wife of Norway; two sons, David of Brookline, MA and Chris and his wife, Tracy, of Vancouver, Washington; four sisters, Elaine Besenski of Saskatchewan, Canada, Vicki Wilson of Oxford, Candi Roderick of Cummin, Ga. and Debbie Kennagh of Oxford.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11, at 3 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church, Norway.

In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Christmas for Kids, c/o Norway Savings Bank, Main Street,Norway,ME 04268.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris, is in charge of arrangements.

Olcott Gates
1999-08-05

Olcott Gates, 80, of Wiscasset, died July 27, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Gates was a geologist and an avid sailor up to the time of his death. He worked for the Maine Geological Survey for 45 years mapping the Downeast Coast of Maine and most recently North Haven and Vinalhaven Islands. He cruised the Coast of Maine and Nova Scotia that he so dearly loved, and contributed a chapter on the geology of the Maine Coast to Roger Duncan's A Cruising Guide to the New England Coast.

Born in New York City on March 19, 1919, he was the son of Dorothy Olcott Elsmith and Frederick L. Gates. He attended Exeter Academy and Harvard College.

Through his wife, Jane, a geology instructor at Vassar, he became interested in geology. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard as Commander of a trawler in the North Atlantic where the rugged coast of Greenland deepened his interest in geology to a passion.

After the war, he was captain of the research vessel, Atlantis, of the Oceanographic Institute in Woods Hole, Mass. Later he attended Graduate School at the University of Colorado and John's Hopkins University where he studied geology. He did field work in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and in Nevada while teaching at John's Hopkins.

For two years he was a Peace Corps Administrator in Ghana, West Africa. He returned to serve as chairman of the Geology Department at New York State University in Fredonia.

Mr. Gates loved the sea and sailing, a passion he passed on to his family. He loved beating to windward in a fresh breeze with the salt spray in his face. He spent his spare time designing and building small boats and making improvements to the many sailboats he owned through the years.

A resident of Wiscasset for over 20 years, Mr. Gates was active in Town Meetings where he always enjoyed a good debate. He was a member of the Wiscasset Yacht Club and St. Philip's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Hooper Gates of Wiscasset; his son, Frederick L. Gates of Arlington, Mass.; daughters, Catherine H. Gates and Alice Hooper Gates, both of Bath, and Elizabeth Shaw of Appleton; two sisters, Deborah Senft and Barbara Burwell of Woods Hole, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Nathaniel H. Gates, Jebb and Jannetta Shaw and Taylor and Megan Moran-Gates.

Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Louise Genthner
1999-01-28

Louise Genthner, 73, a longtime resident of Waldoboro and Fort Myers, Fla., died Wednesday, January 20.

Born in Damariscotta, a daughter of Everett and Florence Erving, she was a graduate of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.

Mrs. Genthner was married to Maynard Genthner and together they owned and operated The Waldoboro Press. She also worked at the Lincoln County Courthouse and Hawkes Greenhouse in Wiscasset.

Her husband died previously.

She was the longtime friend of Tony Belanger of Fort Myers.

Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne Reed of Wiscasset; two sisters, Eleanor York of Damariscotta and Frances (``Tat") Mitchell of Wiscasset; two brothers, Tom Erving of Bowdoinham and Douglas Erving of Hartford, Conn.; a granddaughter, Cristal Bryant of Bristol; a grandson, Matthew Reed of Wiscasset; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are being made in Fort Myers, Fla.

Margaret Booker George
1999-01-14

Margaret (Maggy) Booker George, 65, New Harbor, died at her home Jan. 6, after a long illness. She was born March 22, 1933, in Bangor a daughter of James F. and Mary C. (Buck) Booker. Moving to Ohio in her youth, she attended public schools in Mentor, and graduated from Mentor High in the class of 1951. She earned her bachelors degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono, in 1955.

For several years, Maggy taught school and on July 21, 1962, married Donald E. George. She and her family lived in Canton, Ohio where she became very active with theater. She volunteered with the Players Guild, there, serving in various capacities throughout the state. She was also deeply involved in the Canton literacy program for many years. Coming back to Maine permanently in 1997, she became active with the Bristol Footlighters, stage group and was their director until her illness. She was also involved in the making of Message in a Bottle, which was partially filmed in New Harbor.

Maggy leaves her husband, Don, of New Harbor, two children, Kathleen M. George of Canton, Ohio, Edward J. George of Cleveland, Ohio, a sister Mary Ann Cottrell of Round Pond, and a brother James B. Booker of Chamberlain.

Visiting hours were held Jan. 9 at the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. A prayer service was held during visitation, Rev. Ray Picard officiated. If desired, donations may be made to either Miles Home Health-Hospice, Box 4500 Damariscotta, 04543, or the New Harbor First Responders, New Harbor, or Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation, 6399 Wilshire Blvd., St. 510, L.A., Cal. 90048, for the benefit of Kate George.

Roland Harrington Gibson
1999-01-14

RUTLAND, VT - Roland Harrington Gibson died on Tuesday, January 5, at Genesis Elder Care in Rutland, VT, where he had resided since June, 1995.

He was born September 15, 1916, in Waltham, MA, the eldest of four children of Roland Andrew Gibson and Carrie Horne Gibson. He grew up in the Waltham Highlands. He was educated in the Waltham Institute in Boston, MA.

He married Esther Louise Helgeson, who grew up in the same neighborhood as he, on April 11, 1942. He survived her by one month.

He is survived by their three children, Roland Leonard of Pawlet, VT; Peter Henry of Billerica, MA; and Barbara Louise of Jamaica Plain, MA; four grandchildren, Nathaniel and Thaddeus Gibson and Judith and Kaila Gibson-Okunieff. He is also survived by his brother Henry Gibson of Venice, FL and his sisters, Ethel Wheeler of Live Oak, FL and Corinne Ray of Ocala, FL.

Early in his career, he worked for the B.C. Ames Co., where he spent the Second World War as a critical worker in the machine tool industry. A number of positions in the craft of precision machinist with Waltham companies ultimately brought him to Sanborn Co., the early maker of electrocardiograph machines, which became a part of the Hewlett-Packard Co. Retirement in 1972, took him to Norway, Maine, where he built a house and began a second career in carpentry.

His second retirement gook him to Naples, FL in 1984. He resided there until 1994, when the ill health of his wife and him required a return to New England, so their children could care for them.

Mr. Gibson remained a member of Oxford Lodge from his time in Norway. He was an enthusiastic amateur radio operator and a member of the American Radio Relay League for decades. Barbershop singing also engaged him for a number of years. He was an active member of the Kiwanis of Norway-Paris and a member of MSAD 17 Region 11 Vocational Board.

A memorial service will be held this coming spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland, VT.
