Garfield, Scott
May 24, 1914 - May 26, 2003

Scott Parker Garfield, 89, died peacefully at his home at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor on May 26. He was born May 24, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of John M. and Helen B. Garfield. He graduated from University School, Shaker Heights, Ohio in the class of 1933. He first came to Linekin Bay in 1922. He summered and worked in Christmas Cove, South Bristol before going to college.
He attended the University of Michigan for one year and graduated from Bowdoin College in the Class of 1938.
He was co-director of the Audio-Visual Department at State University of New York at Binghamton until he retired in 1976. He moved permanently to Maine in 1975, living in Brunswick from 1975 to 2000. He moved to Boothbay Harbor in 2000. He worked from 1976 to 1991 at Bowdoin College as the game room supervisor. He enjoyed traveling in Europe, photography, sailing, maritime history, shipbuilding, and windjammer maritime affairs of all sorts.
He is predeceased by his wife, Jean B. Garfield and by a son, John Q. Garfield.
He is survived by his daughter, Helen Elizabeth Garfield of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.; sons, Scott Quincy Garfield of Coatesville, Penn., and Richard Benson Garfield of Tullahoma, Tenn.
Memorial service 11 a.m., Thurs., May 29 at Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay with Rev. Mary Jo Zimmerli officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, 04538. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Coggins, Robert
Oct. 9, 1920 - May 19, 2003

Robert Winthrop Coggins, former Director of the General Services Administration’s Appraisal Department, passed away on May 19 from heart failure. He was 82.
His wife, Dorothy Rabbitt Coggins, whom he shared 53 years of marriage, survives him, a resident of Alexandria, Va., since 1967. In addition to his wife, Mr. Coggins is survived by their four children and their spouses: Elaine and Gary Gramp of Lorton, Va., Susan and Robert Coggins II of Centreville, Va., Nancy and James Coggins of Jacksonville, Fla., and Rebecca and Eric Propst of Avondale, Penn., their ten grandchildren, Allison, Lauren,Chandler, Donald, Katie, Sarah, Kevin, Megan, Melissa and Erika; brother, David Coggins and two sisters, Barbara Starratt and Beverly Coggins.
Mr. Coggins is predeceased by two brothers: Benjamin Coggins of Tisbury, Mass., and Dana Coggins of Mattapoisitte, Mass.
Mr. Coggins was born on Oct. 9, 1920 in Attleboro, Mass., to Alice Chandler of Newcastle and Benjamin Wallace Coggins of Machias. He was raised primarily in Pittsfield, Mass. After his graduation from Lenox Prep School, his family moved to Martha’s Vineyard Island in 1939. He was graduated from Yale University in 1943 (Class of ’44) and received his diploma aboard ship as he served in the Navy on the USS Omaha and Huntington during W.W. II. He was a Gunnery Officer attaining the rank of Lieutenant.
After being separated from the Navy in July 1946, Mr. Coggins returned to Martha’s Vineyard Island and worked in the family business.
In April of 1950, he married Dorothy Rabbitt also of Martha’s Vineyard. They moved to Hingham, Mass., where Dunn and Bradstreet employed him in Boston. In 1960, Mr. Coggins started a new career with G.S.A. as a Real Estate Appraiser. This eventually led to his moving to Alexandria, Va., in 1967 to work in Washington D.C.
Mr. Coggins and his wife maintain a summer residence in Newcastle. He enjoyed history, politics, the Washington Redskins, and the Portland Seadogs, but most of all he enjoyed his family.
Mr. Coggins will be buried on Martha’s Vineyard Island on May 31. Graveside service 11 a.m., in the Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Hardwick, Pauline
Nov. 18, 1919 - May 24, 2003

Pauline E. Hardwick, 83, of Boothbay, passed away at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor May 24 after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 18, 1919 in Boothbay the daughter of Harry and Margaret Bernier Matthews.
Mrs. Hardwick was one of the original members of the Athletic Boosters Club when it was formed in the 1950’s. She was a custodian at Boothbay Region High School for 29 years. She worked at Ken Yerreance Bakery and most recently at the Hannaford store in Boothbay Harbor where she enjoyed her “deli” friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, LeRoy Hardwick; son, Roy E. Hardwick; and by three brothers, Wendell, Linwood and Merle Matthews.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Latter of Boothbay; sister, Madelyn Delano of Wiscasset; five grandchildren: Cathy Latter of Boothbay Harbor, Mrs. Chester (Susan) Sprague of Boothbay, Mickey and Tracy Latter of Boothbay and Scott Hardwick of Boothbay Harbor; five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Visitation gathering 6 to 8 p.m. Tues., May 27 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. Memorial service 10 a.m. Wed., May 28 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. Burial will be in the Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Athletic Boosters Club, c/o Cindy Pottle, 5 Oak St., Boothbay Harbor, 04538 or to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Hwy., Edgecomb, 04556. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Baker, Doris
Sept. 10, 1927 - May 18, 2003

Doris H. Baker, 75, of Boothbay passed away on May 18, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital at Togus, with her family at her side.
She was born in Lowell, Mass., on Sept. 10, 1927, the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Mortham) Hankinson. She grew up in Tyngsboro, Mass., and graduated from Chelmsford High School.
Prior to her serving in the Navy during the Korean War, she graduated from Lowell General Hospital School of Nursing. Continuing her education in 1964, she went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from North-eastern University and her graduate degree from Framingham State College.
She was a guidance counselor for many years prior to moving to Maine to accept a position as a professor of nursing and behavioral sciences. She was also instrumental in the creation of the CETA Program, writing the standard of the first certified nurse’s aide courses in the state of Maine. She went on to become a nursing education consultant for the Maine Department of Human Services Bureau of Licensing and Certification.
She volunteered her time and belonged to many professional associations. Among these were the Maine Ombudsman Program and Bureau of Maine’s Elderly. She was also president of Maine State Nurses Association, as well as donating her time tirelessly to the Republican State Committee. She joined American Legion Emerson Lane Post 132 of Richmond. Her dedication and enthusiasm led to her being elected the first woman commander for Post 132 and going on to become the first woman to be elected department and then state commander of the American Legion in Maine, as well as several other local and national offices.
In her own words, “I’ve met more good friends in the American Legion while traveling around the state of Maine than in any other time of my life or while pursuing any other professional endeavor. The opportunities for service to veterans and working to promote programs in the American Legion are the most important and rewarding activities in which I have ever participated.”
Among many other noteworthy accomplishments, she was appointed to the Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board and was chairwoman of the Maine Veterans Legislative Coordinating Committee, where she worked tirelessly for better medical care and health benefits for Maine veterans.
Her family will remember her for her love of international travel, often including her family in her adventures. She loved to walk on the beach with her grandsons, collecting shells and appreciated art. She will be missed by her family, Kathy Erwin of Owls Head, Ruth Baker of Bath, Paige and Stephen Russell of Boothbay and her grandsons, Adam and Seth Russell of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Her brother, Donald A. Hankinson, predeceased her.
Graveside service 1 p.m., Tues., May 27, at the New Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta, with full military honors being provided by the Kennebec Valley Honor Guard.

Wilcock, Joseph
Nov. 11, 1912 - May 12, 2003

Joseph Wilcock, 90, of South Bristol, passed away at Maine Medical Center, Portland, surrounded by his family and friends on May 12. He was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England on Nov. 11, 1912. He was one of six children born to James and Mary Wilcock.
In 1926 he immigrated to the U.S. and lived in the New Bedford, Mass., area. He attended the New Bedford and Westport, Mass. school systems.
On Aug. 24, 1936 he married June M. Morrison and they resided in Westport, Mass. In 1941 his employer General Baking Co. (Bond Bread) transferred him to Portland. They transferred him several times throughout the New England area. After 25 years he opened his own retail bakery and sold it four years later.
He then moved to New Hampshire and worked for Brooke Bond Tea Company as a salesman, later he worked for Toy Distributors Inc., of Framingham, Mass. A brief stint with Giran Valu Supermarkets of Haverhill, Mass., as store manager led him to Giltex Manufacturing as Regional Manager, bringing him to South Bristol. He then retired from Giltex.
Joseph and June became active in the Union Congregational Church of South Bristol. He also served two terms as selectman of South Bristol and spent many hours and days working beside June in her duties as Town Clerk.
Together they were active in the forming of the First Responders in South Bristol and both were members of the South Bristol Volunteer Fire Department.
As a member of the Mason and Eastern Star, he devoted much of his time to them.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilcock spent many hours about their boats, the June M., June M., Two and the June M. Three. His hobbies were model trains and gardening.
Mr. Wilcock is survived by his son, Richard D. Wilcock; daughter-in-law, Margaret M. Wilcock, Dorothy Wilcock; grandchildren Shelley, Debbie, Kevin, Diane, and Cindy; brother, Walter Wilcock of Brewster, Mass., as well as 10 great grandchildren.
Memorial service Sat., June 7, 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle. Arrangements are under the care of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Interment will follow at the West Bristol Cemetery.

Mank, Frances
March 13, 1921 - May 28, 2003

Frances A. Mank, 82, of Wiscasset, passed away on May 28 at her residence.
She was born in Wiscasset, March 13, 1921, a daughter of Irving H. and Abbie Grover Lewis. She attended Wiscasset schools and Wiscasset Academy.
On Dec. 5, 1938, she married Edward R. Mank, Sr. She worked at the Dodge Inn in Edgecomb and at the Bath Box Company in Bath.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset.
She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a team for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Edward R. Mank, Sr. of Wiscasset; two sons, Edward R. Mank Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Bath, and Richard L. Mank and his wife, Carolyn, of Wiscasset; one daughter, Brenda J. House and her husband, Stephen, of Wiscasset; three brothers, Kenneth Lewis, Jack Lewis, and David Lewis, all of Massachusetts; four sisters, Alice Brewer of Boothbay Harbor, Vera Haynes of Massachusetts, Isabel Crocker of Wiscasset, and Gloria Lewis of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Visiting hours were held on May 30 at Mayo and Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal St., Wiscasset.
Funeral service 11 a.m., Sat., May 31 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary Hubley officiating.
Interment will follow in Grover Cemetery, Woolwich.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, 04086.

Bourque, Doris
Nov. 7, 1915 - May 15, 2003

Doris Ikalainen Bourque, passed away peacefully on May 15, at her home in Newcastle at the age of 87.
She was the daughter of Karl and Mary Ikalainen. born in Fitchburg, Mass., on Nov. 7, 1915, she grew up in Princeton, Mass. and attended school there. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Lowell Teachers’ College and taught elementary school in Rutland and Holden, Mass. She then went on to teach remedial reading to students with learning disabilities. She raised her family in Princeton, Massachusetts and retired to Newcastle with her husband Ellsworth J. Bourque in 1996.
She was predeceased by her husband in January 2001.
Doris was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed handwork and was especially known for her braided and hooked rugs. She also did hospital volunteer work. Doris was proud of her Finnish heritage. She spoke Finnish fluently and traveled to Finland to research for family’s roots.
She is survived by her son, Bruce J. Bourque of Hallowell; daughter, Judith I. Bourque of Stockholm, Sweden, as well as three grandchildren, Amanda Bourque, Garrett Bourque and Jonathan Olivegren Bourque, a niece, Mary Ann Mastrorio; nephew, Allen Ikalainen; and her cat “Muffin”.
Graveside service Woodlawn cemetery in Princeton, Mass., Sat., June 15, 11 a.m. Arrangements are under the care of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta

Fowles, Clara
unknown - March 22, 2003

A Committal Service for Clara E. Fowles, 89, of West Bath, who passed away on March 25, will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sat., June 7 in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.
Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath.

McLain, Harris
Dec. 29, 1914 - May 31, 2003

Harris “Rusty” McLain, 88, passed away on May 31 in Waldoboro. Rusty was born Dec. 29, 1914 in New Harbor, a son of Harris and Geneva Gifford McLain.
He attended Waldoboro High School and then joined the Army, serving in the Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons and New Guinea from 1942 through 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiastic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon.
After returning home, Rusty worked in a sporting goods store. He and his wife, Arlene, decided to move to Jackman where they opened their own business, The Grace Pond Camps. While living in Jackman, Rusty enjoyed working as a Maine Guide. After 10 years, the couple decided to move home to Waldoboro and Rusty was employed for GTE Sylvania until retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and was an avid baseball fan.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW in Waldoboro.
His wife, Arlene, predeceased him in 1988.
He is survived by his brothers, Harlan G. McLain of Waldoboro and Floyd McLain of Round Pond; two nephews, and one niece as well as several cousins.
Graveside service 11 a.m., Tues., June 3, at the German cemetery in Waldoboro. Both the American Legion and the VFW will take part in the service.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
