Peters, Hannah
Dec. 27, 1991 - April 8, 2003

Hannah Marie Juliet Marjorie Thelma Peters, 11, of Jefferson, died unexpectedly on April 8, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
She was born Dec. 27, 1991 in Augusta. She attended The Children’s Center in Augusta until 1996 when she entered Kindergarten at Laura E. Richards School in Gardiner. She transferred to Jefferson Village School in Jefferson in 1999 and was a much-loved student there.
Hannah was a special child in more ways than one. She touched the hearts of everyone she met, with a smile. If you were having a bad day, a “Hannah Hug” and smile always made you feel better. Her smile lit up a room and her laugh was infectious. Although Hannah could not speak, she “talked” with her smile, eyes, heart and body language. Her kisses were special and hugs were like love incarnate.
She was a much loved daughter, sister and student and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She loved swimming, clapping people's hands, being read to and watching Joe Cupo and Kevin Mannix on Channel Six.
Hannah was predeceased by her infant brother Jason, her maternal grandmother, Marjorie W. Pierson, her maternal uncle, Stephen A. Wade and a great aunt, Ethel Wade.
Hannah is survived by her parents, Linda and Wayne Peters of Jefferson; brother, Joshua Peters of Jefferson; maternal grandparents, Robert J. Pierson of Jefferson, Melvin G. Wade Sr. of Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta and his wife, Harriett Wade of Farmington. Paternal grandmother, Helen Peters and companion, GeorgeVanasse of New Bedford, Mass.; paternal grandparents, William Peters and wife, Amy of Altona, Fla., and paternal great grandmother, Juliet Murais of Taunton, Mass.; great, great aunt, Sylvia Harriman of Winthrop, great aunt, Nina Mank and husband, Sheldon of Readfield and a great uncle, Ronald Wade of Winthrop; “second mom”, Lori Lynn Chabot of Augusta; aunt Melissa Morrill and husband, Tom of Windsor; uncles, Elton Wade and wife, Betty Jo of Litchfield, Melvin G. Wade Jr., and wife, Joan of Sidney, Charles Wade of Clinton; aunt, Kimberly Wade of Augusta; uncle, Thomas Wade and companion, Sue McIntyre of Gardiner; aunt, Rhona Wade of Wayne; uncle, Peter Wade and wife, Nancy of Ocala, Fla., uncle, Robert Wade of Augusta; paternal great aunt, Nancy Durham of Taunton, Mass.; aunt, Wendy Peters of New Bedford, Mass.; aunt, Pamela Vaca of Freetown, Mass; uncle, Scott Peters of New Bedford, Mass., uncle, Dale Peters and wife, Kimberly of Ramstein, Germany and paternal cousins, Kim Grundy and husband, Brian of Berkeley, Mass., Jeff Durham and companion, Sharon of Taunton, Mass., and Jan Kingsbury of Maribista, Fla.; and numerous cousins and friends.
Visiting hours Fri., April 11, Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service Sat., April 12, 11 a.m. at Windsor Memorial Baptist Church on the corner of Reed Rd., and Rt. 32 in Windsor.

The family of Hannah M. Peters wishes to thank the teachers, staff and students at Jefferson Village School for making our daughter so welcome and loved. We would also like to thank the Jefferson First Responders, Delta Ambulance Service and the doctors and nurses at Miles Memorial Hospital for their care of our daughter and sister. We appreciated your kindness in our time of loss.

Miller, Gwendolyn
Aug. 17, 1921 - April 13, 2003

Gwendolyn Beatrice Harper/Miller, 81, formerly of Thomaston, Waldoboro, Jefferson and lately of Warren, passed away with her family present on April 13, at Country Manor Nursing Home, Cooper’s Mills, after a long illness. She was the widow of Roger Emerson Miller, who died on March 31.
She was born in Randolph, on Aug. 17, 1921, the daughter of Howard Willis Eastman and Helen Marr Smith Eastman. She was a 1939 graduate of Camden High School. She lived in Thomaston from 1942 until 1963 where she and her first husband, Wilbert L. Harper raised their three children, David, Joanne and Rita Harper.
She was employed at Sylvania, in Waldoboro from 1956 through 1961, and then was employed by the Knox County General Hospital, in Rockland, as a dietitian from 1961 through 1966. She lived in Waldoboro from 1963 through 1981, and then she and her husband, the now late Roger Miller moved to a house they built in Jefferson (a replica of a 200 year old cape style house.)
While she was a resident of Waldoboro, she became a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. Also, Gwendolyn and the late Jasper Stahl, author of “The History of Waldoboro” submitted an application to have the Old German Church accepted as a National Landmark, and due to their effort, the Old German Church became registered in 1978. Gwendolyn was the first director of the Waldoboro Historical Society, which involved genealogical study of early German settlers and location of historic sites and record keeping.
She was a communicant of St. Bernards Catholic Church, Rockland.
Survivors include a son, David Harper of Rockland; two daughters, Mrs. Joanne Brewer-Mahan and her husband Edmond Mahan of Salem, N.H., and Mrs. Rita Stump of Warren; three step-daughters and their husbands, Caroline and Tim Woodbury, of Newcastle, Mary Ellen and Gordon Nichol of Damariscotta, Margery and Ron Walters of Norwich, Conn., and a stepson, John Miller, of Eastport; sister-in-law, Pat Eastman of Scarborough; two nieces, Leslie (Sunny) Eastman Russell, and her husband Jesse Russell, of Freeport, Beth Eastman-Bowne and her husband, Jim Bowne of Scarborough; cousin Donald Snow and his wife, Alix Snow of Westport, Conn., cousin, Katie Snow of Jefferson; sister-in-law, Beverly Rytky of Cushing; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours Sun., April 20, 5-8 p.m., David Funeral Home, 35 Knox St., Thomaston with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Mass Christian burial offered by Fr. Mark Reinhardt, Mon., April 21, 10 a.m., St. Bernards Church, Broadway, Rockland.
Spring Interment will be at the German Lutheran Cemetery, Waldoboro.

Canning, Alice
Sept. 21, 1905 - April 26, 2003

Alice T. Mullen Canning, 97, of Augusta, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully, April 26 at her home at Granite Hill Estates.
She was born Sept. 21, 1905 a native of Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of Joseph and Ellen (Shannon) Mullen, she was educated in Rhode Island Schools. She lived in Augusta and environs for more than 60 years. She worked with her husband Charles F. Canning Sr. in the founding of Pine State Tobacco and Candy Company in 1941, now called Pine State Trading Company.
She was active in the community, serving many organizations of St. Mary’s Church including serving as President of St. Mary’s School’s P.T.A.; St. Mary’s Literary Guild, St. Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella and was a lifetime member of the Augusta Country Club.
Her four children and several grandchildren were graduated from St. Mary’s School. She spent many winters in South Florida with her husband, Charles, who predeceased her in 1990 after 61 years of marriage.
Survivors include her daughters, Ellen Patricia Alberding (Russell) of Lake Bluff, Ill, and Mary Frances Knox (the late James) of Stuart, Fla.; her sons, Charles F. Canning Jr., of Hallowell and Boothbay Harbor and John N. Canning (Chyllene) of Pemaquid and Isla Morada, Fla., and 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 11 a.m., Fri., May 9.
Family will hold visitation at St. Mary’s Church 45 minutes prior to the services.

Lailer, Hazel
Aug. 14, 1911 - May 6, 2003

Hazel Mae Lailer, 91, of New Harbor, passed away on May 6 at her home in New Harbor. She was born Aug. 14, 1911 in North Situate, Mass., the daughter of James H. and Mattie Pearl West Belcher. She grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn., and attended local schools. In 1937 she moved back to Maine.
She was a homemaker and was well known for her braided rugs, which she and her daughter made together. She enjoyed handiwork including making quilts, rugs, crocheting, and knitting. She made hundreds of mittens and hats for many needy children in the area. She loved bird watching and her flower gardens. She sold her house in Pemaquid and lived with her daughter, Lillian, her devoted and loving caregiver for over 25 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph W. Lailer and by two sons, Raymond Lailer and Robert Fuller.
She is survived by a daughter, Lillian and her husband, Allan Benner of New Harbor; sons, Russell Lailer and his companion, Barbara Bragg of North Waldoboro and John Fuller and his wife, Katherine of Douglasville, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Ann Fuller of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepdaughters, Ernestine Jameson and her husband, Bud of Warren, Eleanor Poland of Camden, Jessie Eaton of Rockland, Helen Mitchell and her husband, Parker of Rockland, eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Visiting hours 6 to 8 p.m., Wed., May 7 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Funeral service 2 p.m., Thurs., May 8 at the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro. Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate.

Buchan, John
July 15, 1936 - May 7, 2003

John Edward Buchan, of Nobleboro, passed away on May 7 at Midcoast Hospital, Brunswick.
He was born in Damariscotta, on July 15, 1936, the son of John C. and Doris Ball Buchan. He attended Lincoln Academy and Dartmouth High School. He served a three-year apprenticeship with the Bricklayers Union and was a gifted stonemason, following the profession of his father and grandfather and working in the trade for almost 50 years.
He loved classic autos, make and break engines and animals, most particularly, dogs. He was a member of the Lighthouse Auto Club. For years he, along with his wife and sister-in-law, kept alive the tradition of smoking alewives at the last smokehouse in Damariscotta Mills.
Jack was also a baker and partner along with his wife in MJ’s Catering, their small family business, serving food for auctions and antique shows. He was famous for his carrot cake.
He leaves his wife, Mary Jane Mulligan Buchan; daughter, Jo-Ann Oliver and her husband Henry of Nobleboro; sister, Jane Burghold of Rockland, Mass.; grandsons, Joshua, Jacob and Jesse Oliver of Nobleboro; favorite sister-in-law, Sally Mulligan of Nobleboro, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Sat., May 17, at his home on 234 East Neck Rd., Nobleboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Office of Donor Services, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, N.Y., 10605.
Services are under the direction and care of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Hatch, Kenneth
June 4, 1941 - April 15, 2003

Kenneth L. Hatch, Jr., 61, of Whitefield, passed away on the afternoon of April 15 at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
He was born on June 4, 1941, the son of Kenneth Sr. and Agatha (Lennox) Hatch.
Mr. Hatch moved from New York to Woolwich with his family when he was about 10 years old. He lived in that area, graduating from Morse High School, until 1968. Upon starting a family of his own, he moved to Whitefield where he raised his children. He worked at Bath Iron Works for 44 years, and was set to retire this September.
He was an avid outdoorsman, especially loving hunting and fishing. He loved taxidermy, and had always dreamed of opening his own taxidermy shop, a plan that was to take place upon his retirement. He loved his family and grandchildren, and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his long time companion, Elizabeth Presby; one brother, Howard Hatch; 14 children, Kenneth, III, Todd, Teresa, Tracy, Bruce, James, Michelle, David, Jeremy, Chris, Michael, Peter, Nicholas and Nathan; 45 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours at Strong Funeral Home on Mon., April 21, 6-8 p.m. Funeral at the funeral home on Tues., April 22, 1 p.m. He will be laid to rest with his parents at the Oak Grove cemetery in Bath.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Barbara Bush Foundation at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Stickney, Louise
March 15, 1912 - May 5, 2003

Louise A. Stickney, 91, a lifelong resident of Wiscasset, passed away on May 5, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
She was born in Wiscasset on March 15, 1912, the daughter of Richard T. and Blanche G. (Colby) Grover Sr. She attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1928. She married George W. Stickney and raised their family of four children.
Mrs. Stickney was a member of the Wiscasset Baptist Church, the Woolwich Grange and the Mother’s Club in Wiscasset.
She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Stickney in 1973, one son, George W. Stickney Jr., one daughter, Adeline L. Harvey, one great granddaughter, Darlene Chartier, two sisters, Eva Bailey and Mildred Curtis, three brothers, Richard Grover Jr., Chester Grover and Ernest Grover.
She is survived by two daughters, Blanche G. Johnson and her husband Stanley F. of Wiscasset and Dianne L. Sutherburg and her husband Terry J. of Newcastle; 10 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 6 to 8 p.m., Wed., May 7 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal St., Wiscasset. Funeral service 1 p.m. on Thurs., May 8, at the Day’s Ferry Congregational Church on Old Stage Rd., in Woolwich with Rev. Stanley F. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn cemetery in Wiscasset. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiscasset Baptist Church, 143 Beechnut Hill Rd., Wiscasset, 04578.

Jones, Florence
April 25, 1910 - June 22, 2003

Florence Prendergast Jones, 93, of Camden, died peacefully at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport on June 22.
Florence was born in Brooklyn on April 25, 1910 and was the eldest of four siblings born to William and Margaret (O’Riordan) Prendergast of Dublin. She lived in Bronxville, Manhasset and for the better part of 40 years Larchmont, N.Y. She moved to Damariscotta in 1997 and to Camden in 2002.
In 1936, Florence married Morgan Arthur Jones of New York, N.Y. She was widowed suddenly and unexpectedly in 1947.
Florence was educated at the Ursuline Convent in New Rochelle and was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs. However, her real love was the decorative arts.
She lived a long and healthy life. She loved people and music, travel and adventure, she also loved to laugh. She followed current events and the stock market over the years.
She was a member of the Ladies of Charity, of St. Augustine’s parish in Larchmont and was a kind and loyal friend in all her communities. Florence was well loved and will be missed by many.
Surviving are her son David Jones and his wife Hilary of Camden; sister, Marjorie Kidder of Oberlin, Ohio; two granddaughters, Bronwyn Jones Bosse of Berlin, Germany and Maeghan Jones of Denver, Col., niece, Catharine P. Taylor of Newport and Boston; nephew, Sean Kidder of McLean, Va., as well as Ms. Jones’ five children, Deborah Day of Toronto, Louise Newman of Oakland, Katherine Day of Montreal, Jessica Day of Boston and Sean Day of Montreal, and five great grandchildren.
Funeral mass St. Patrick’s in Newcastle, at 9 a.m., Fri., June 27, the Rev. Raymond Picard officiating. Memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are with the Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden.

Snowdon, Frederick
June 13, 1938 - June 20, 2003

Frederick Leonard Snowdon, Sr., 65, of West Bath died June 20, at his residence. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was born on June 13, 1938, the son of Kenneth and Margaret Snowdon. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1956. Fred joined the National Guard while still in high school and entered the U.S. Navy on March 1, 1956. He attended New Hampshire College for three years. On July 11, 1959 he married Linnea “Marie” Henrikson. Fred was employed at Bath Iron Works electrical shop from 1959 to 1962, the Sunoco Gas Station in Bath for three years and the Bath Post Office for 12 years. For 10 years, Fred was the Postmaster of the Damariscotta Post Office and later Postmaster of the Wiscasset Post Office retiring in 1996 with 34 years of Postal Service. He drove a school bus for Bill Reed for many years.
Fred was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Wiscasset, a church board member and a gifted bookkeeper and church treasurer, a volunteer for the West Bath Fire Department and a former Selectman of West Bath where he served for seven years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, woodworking, hunting, fishing, working in the yard and watching his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, L. Marie Snowdon of West Bath, one son, Frederick L. Snowdon, II and his wife Christy of Georgetown, three daughters, Traci Nygaard and her husband Ron of West Bath, Marcia Goodfellow of Bath and Linnea Snowdon of South Portland, one brother, Kenneth Snowdon and his wife Faith of Greenville, one sister, Dorothy Pinkham and her husband Kenneth of Five Islands, nine grandchildren, Catie Snowdon, Hugh Goodfellow, Benjamin Goodfellow, Cameron Snowdon, Carl Nygaard, Joshua Hennie, Kaleb Snowdon, Jacob Snowdon, Mackenzie Snowdon, one great-grandson, Mason Gordon and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service to celebrate his life 2 p.m. on Sun., June 29, at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 150 Congress Avenue, Bath. A gathering of family and friends followed the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial at Orchard Hill cemetery in West Bath. Memorial contributions were made to the American Cancer Association, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, 04086 or the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, 04106. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath.
