Kofler, John
unknown - July 26, 2003

John George Kofler, a summer resident for 60 years in Alna, died July 26, at Miles Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Kofler was born in 1909 in New Orleans, La. His father, Maximilian Kofler, had immigrated from the South Tyrol District of Austria around 1900 to work at the New Orleans Cotton Exchange. His mother was Saidie Lyster of New Orleans.
Very early in his life John developed a strong interest in art. He studied art, painted and exhibited in Louisiana for many years until he moved to Washington, D.C. in 1941 where his style became more abstract focusing on color rather than realistic objects to convey his message.
His move to Washington, D.C. was to work in the effort to prepare America for WWII. He became a member of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) predecessor of the CIA where he became director of the cartographic drafting room. While at the OSS he was drafted by the Army in spite of an injured knee: when he collapsed during basic training he was sent back to the OSS as a member of the Army. In 1943 he was selected to design and draft a report by General George Catlett Marshall on the war in the Pacific for which he received a special commendation from General Marshall.
After the OSS, in 1945, he joined the Department of Defense as a Visual Information Specialist where he worked until his retirement in 1972. Since then all his time has been devoted to painting.
In 1943 he married Jane Philbrick Kofler and made his first visit to Maine. His 60 summer visits to Maine have been filled with the pleasures of painting here and enjoying the many other experiences that Maine offers - the sea, islands, woods and fields. Though from away he was a Mainer at heart.
After 1972, he and his wife were able to reconnect with his many relatives in South Tyrol, District of Austria, and made many visits there.
He is survived by his wife Jane of almost 60 years; their three children, Anne, Susan, and John K.; grandson, Marshall Kofler, daughter-in-law Debra Boles Kofler, Dee Zamora; nephew, Dr. L. Maximilian Buja and family of Houston, Tex.; niece, Maxine Kimbrell and family of New Orleans, LA., and extended family in Balzano, Italy.
Arrangements are under the care of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.

Sabins, Michael
March 25, 1982 - Aug. 14, 2003

Michael “Mike” Sabins, 21, born March 26, 1982 in Rockport, a son of Scot and Mary Scott Sabins, passed away Thurs., Aug. 14 in Union.
Mike graduated from Medomak Valley High School in the Class of 2001 and was presently employed by Viking Lumber as a delivery driver. Mike was an avid outdoors person who would have rather been hunting than working. He enjoyed hunting turkeys, deer and was hoping to get a moose permit and go moose hunting. He also enjoyed fishing, bow hunting, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. He took great pride in his ford pick-up; making sure it was always clean and shining. Everything he had was always neat and well organized. Mike was a past member of the Union Fire Department and currently a member of the NRA. He enjoyed target practicing and shooting clay pigeons. Mike was always off doing things with his friends and never was one to sit around and do nothing. He always kept busy, especially anything involving the outdoors.
Mike especially enjoyed going to his grandfather’s camp at Nicatous Lake in Burlington. He was fortunate to enjoy many hunting and fishing trips as often as he could. He shot an elk in Burlington two years ago. As far as his family knows, he was the only person to shoot an elk in Maine in many years. He received a lot of teasing about shooting it but he kept the horns at home. He also got a turkey permit the first year he applied and was successful in getting one.
He will be remembered as a person who really enjoyed life and would love to have had his own hunting and fishing show on television. Mike and his best friend, Levi, both shared the same interests and spent most of their spare time outdoors and enjoying nature and what God created for us to enjoy.
He also enjoyed Nascar and followed Dale Jarrett, but as long as a Ford won the race, he was happy.
Mike is survived by his parents of Union; brother, Kevin Sabins of Union; grandparents, Don and Nancy Sabins of Union, George and Jeanne Scott of Warren; uncle, Gary and Amy Sabins and their family of Union; aunts, Joy and Tim Trot and their family of Richmond, Sue and John Starrett and their family of Farmington; great friends, Larry, Priscilla, Jake and Levi Esancy all of Liberty.
Graveside service 2 p.m., Sun., Aug. 17, at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Burial will follow in Lakeview cemetery in Union.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the Michael J. Sabins Memorial Fund., C/O Damariscotta Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 727, Union, 04862.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
