Mr. Leslie H. Gammon

NORWAY - Leslie H. Gammon, 97, of Norway died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Norway on December 21, 1905, the son of Edwin S. and Hattie Everett Gammon. He attended Norway schools and had been employed at a local shoe shop for over 50 years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows for 78 years and the Knights of Pythias for over 50 years, holding offices in both groups. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, birdwatching and walking.
He is survived by three children, Emery and his wife Heide of Oxford, Ellery and his wife Priscilla of Waterford and Audrey Lawson and her husband Michael of Belfast; eight grandchildren Leslie Gammon II, Emery W. Jr., Steven, Stephanie, Darrah, Travis Lawson, William Brackett and Becky Brackett; and four great-grandchildren Tyler, Morgan and Dillon Gammon and Ethan Edwards. He was predeceased by his wives, Helena Wentworth and Camilla Nevers.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 8 at 1 p.m. at Norway Pine Grove Cemetery in South Paris. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Mrs. Beverly Marion Hatch Spear

BURLINGTON, VT - Beverly Marion Hatch Spear died November 22, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Barre, VT, the daughter of the late George Hatch Sr. and Marion (Jackson) Hatch. She spent her early years at their home and then attended Burlington Business College and worked as a secretary at the UVM Department of Nursing.
On June 28, 1963, she married Wayne Spear and the couple made their home in Burlington. When their children, Timothy Paul and Thomas Philip were born, Mrs. Spear was a stay-at-home mother. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts, always a spectator for the children's activities and later a Rainbow Girls mother advisor. She was also a member of Temple Chapter O.E.S. of Burlington and enjoyed going to the Shrine parades and the activities that followed. Dinners out at various churches and organizations were also a treat.
Mrs. Spear was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Burlington and very involved in their Thrift Shop as long as her health permitted. The family thanks the many members who always remembered her on special occasions.
Mrs. Spear is survived by her husband Wayne Spear; sons Timothy Paul Spear of Brooklyn, NY, and Thomas Philip Spear and his wife Mary Waterhouse-Spear of West Paris; also her sister Evelyn; a brother George Hatch Jr. and several nieces and nephews. A niece, Lynn Tatro predeceased her.
A memorial service was held at the First Methodist Church in Burlington on November 25, at 1 p.m. with a gathering of family and friends in Fellowship Hall following the service. Temple Chapter O.E.S. will conduct a graveside service on Monday, December 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Vermont Veterans' Cemetery in Randolph Center, VT.
Memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Assn. of Vermont, 30 Farrell St., So. Burlington, VT 05403-9987 or Temple Chapter O.E.S., c/o Judy Kerr, 58 Orchard Rd., S. Burlington, VT 05403.
Arrangements were by Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home in Burlington.

Mrs. Dorothea C. Knopf

WATERFORD - Dorothea C. Knopf, 86, of Waterford passed away on January 19, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Walter and Sophia Pfaendler.
She graduated from Shore Road Academy and Columbia University in New York City. She worked at Long Island University and Seely Architects in New York City. After her marriage to Walter T. Knopf in 1946, she became a loving and selfless housewife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her passions were reading, her faith, helping in the greenhouse, her antique car club, and most of all, her family. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Bridgton. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter in 1985, and her sister, Madeline Pfaendler in 1987.
Mrs. Knopf is survived by her daughter, Christine Kimball; her granddaughter, Sara Kimball and her beloved great-grandchildren, Skyler and Lily, of South Waterford with whom she lived for many years. Her love of her family was boundless, and her tireless devotion will be deeply missed. Her passing has left a void beyond any expression.

Mrs. Hilda Mary Bray

WEST PARIS - Hilda Mary Bray, 97 of West Paris, died March 27, 2004 after a long illness.
Born in Paris on September 5, 1906, she was the daughter of Mark and Kaisa (Holappa) Harta. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Paris High School in 1925. She had worked at local shoe shops for over 25 years, retiring in 1973.
She married William H. Bray on July 3, 1926; he died February 23, 1976.
Mrs. Bray is survived by one nephew, Wayne Chapman, and his wife, Julie, of Attleboro Falls, MA; one great niece, Jenifer Carline, of Attleboro, MA; one great nephew, Michael Chapman of Worcester, MA and one great great niece, Jill Carline of Attleboro, MA.
Graveside funeral services will be held at the Finnish Cemetery, West Paris, later in the spring.
Arrangements are by Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.

Mrs. Aili Alina Benson

WEST PARIS - Aili Alina Benson, 91, of West Paris, died June 6, 2004 at her residence with her loving family at her side.
She was born at Tuelltown, West Paris on April 24, 1913, the daughter of Renne and Sarah (Piikarainen) McKeen and attended local schools and graduated from West Paris High School class of 1931. She married Maurice G. Benson on June 28, 1931; he died on July 15, 1991.
She was a homemaker all her life and was a member of Finish American Society and had volunteered many years for the Hospital Auxiliary at Stephen's Memorial Hospital. She had also worked for the Oxford County Extension Services getting local children physicals and immunizations. She loved her cats, was an avid beano player, loved to travel and did knitting and crocheting. Her family was her life.
Mrs. Benson is survived by three daughters, Nancy McKellick and her husband Al of South Paris, Maurise Veatch and her husband James of West Paris and Marcia Benson of Saugus, MA; two brothers, Renne Rudolph McKeen of Mechanic Falls and Viekko McKeen of Wallingford, CT; five grandchildren; 10 great-granddaughters and one great- great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years; twin sons Renne and Abner; one brother, Walter McKeen; one half brother, Edwin Heikkinen and one sister, Hilja Polvinen.
Relatives and friends were invited to call at the Andrews Funeral Home, 64 Andrews Road, South Woodstock on Tuesday evening, 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services were held at the West Paris Baptist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bruce Tyner officiating. Burial was in the Wayside Cemetery, West Paris.
Memorials in her memory may be made to either Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, 127 Pottle Road, Oxford, ME 04270 or the Finnish-American Society of Maine, P.O. Box 294, West Paris, ME 04289.

Mr. Earl F. Smith

WEST PARIS - Earl Frank Smith, 81, went to be with the Lord on June 8, 2004.
He was born in Greenwood on February 28, 1923, the son of Frank E. and Zella Mae (Bryant) Smith. He enjoyed his guitar and was a religious man.
He is survived by nieces and nephews and was predeceased by one sister, Ethel Chapman and a half sister Alice Crockett.
Graveside services were held at the Songo Pond Cemetery in Albany on Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Chuck Mason officiating. Arrangements by Andrews Funeral Home, 64 Andrews Road, South Woodstock.

Mrs. Nancy Beth Scribner Bessey

PORTLAND - Nancy Beth Scribner Bessey, 79, formerly of South Paris, died Thursday, August 12 at Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Albany on May 19, 1925, the daughter of Fred E. and Nancie L. Stone Scribner. She graduated from Paris High School and had been a homemaker and childcare provider. She enjoyed needlecraft, knitting, crocheting and reading. She married Allan S. Bessey; he passed away in 1973.
She is survived by her children, Mary Lou Bessey of Otisfield, Bethany Sue Tielinen and her husband Chris of Otisfield, Nancy Bessey Wilkinson of South Paris, Roberta Bessey of New York City, NY, Rose Lee Ricci and her husband John of Portland, Kathleen Jean Childs and her husband Albert of Schoodic Lake, Fred Bessey and his wife Mindy of Waterford and Lynn Herrick and her husband Walter of East Oxford; eight grandchildren, Melissa Harper, Matthew Harper, Amy Bessey, Nicole Bessey, Justin Brown, Jamie Brown, Corey Tielinen and Lucia Ricci; two great-grandchildren, Danielle Harper and Harper Logan McConnell and two nephews, David Scribner of South Portland and Dale Scribner of North Andover, MA. She was predeceased by a son, Kevin in 1983.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, August 17 at Riverside Annex Cemetery in South Paris. Family and friends attended visitation on Monday evening at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris. Remembrance donations can be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., PO Box 2208, Augusta, ME 04330 or the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine Street, South Paris, ME 04281.

Mrs. Barbara R. Gillis

VENICE, FL - Barbara R. Gillis, R.N., 83, died October 14, 2004 in Venice, FL with her family by her side. A resident of Rumford most of her life, she recently has resided in Venice, FL and summered at Worthly Pond, Peru, for many years.
She was born in Rumford on October 25, 1920, a daughter of William and Marion (Littlefield) Rowe. She graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford in 1938 and attended the University of Maine for two years and the Eye and Ear Infirmary in Portland for three years where she received her R.N. degree in Nursing in 1943.
During WWII she served as a 1st Lt. with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
She was a Communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Mission Church, Dixfield.
She was married in Rockville, MD on December 23, 1946 to the late Lawrence A. "Lolly" Gillis who died in Naples, FL on August 11, 2002.
Survivors include a son, Lawrence A. Gillis, Jr. and wife Janice of West Simsbury, CT; two daughters, Elizabeth DiBiase and husband John of Portland and Linda Cochran and husband Larry of Venice, FL; five grandchildren, Michael Gillis and wife Amy of Hulls Cove, David Gillis of Cape Elizabeth, Jonathan Gillis of Brookline, MA and Joshua and Ben DiBiase of Portland; two step-grandchildren, Geoffrey and Justin Simpson of West Simsbury, CT; two brothers, Dr. Linwood Rowe of West Peru and John Rowe and wife Geraldine of Champlain, NY and a sister, Sally Fraser and husband James of St. John Island, SC.
There will be no calling hours but friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 30, at St. Joseph's Catholic Mission Church, Dixfield. Interment will be in the Farrington-Morton Cemetery, Mexico. Donations in her memory may be made to the Rumford Hospital, 420 Franklin Street, Rumford, ME 04276.
Arrangements are under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin Street, Rumford, ME 04276.

Mrs. Jane Ann Whalen Bowman

PARIS - Jane Ann Whalen Bowman, 80, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, November 27.
She was born September 6, 1924 in Paterson, NJ to Dr. William and Ethel Clegg Whalen. She attended local schools through high school. She then attended and graduated from Montclair State Teachers College. Jane then worked for the Harry Conover modeling agency in New York City until her marriage to William H. Bowman in 1946.
She later did substitute teaching until she was asked to take the first class in Special Education in Allendale, NJ. She did so while taking courses towards an advanced degree at William Paterson College. She had to give up teaching due to health problems and in 1979 she and her husband retired to Paris. She was an exceptional teacher, Girl Scout leader, favorite aunt and very special mom.
Mrs. Bowman is survived by her best friend, her husband of 58 years; daughters, Marci of Paris, Gail Mazzeo and her husband Dave of Norway and Bonita Springs, FL; grandson, Joad H. Bowman and his wife Sarah of Connecticut; granddaughters, Arianne Miller and her husband Michael of Connecticut and Megan Bowman of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, John H. Bowman, III and her sister, Mary Whalen. She was a warm, caring and kindly person and all will miss her.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 1 at Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.
