Pierce, Winship B.
July 24, 1913 - Nov. 17, 2004

Winship B. Pierce, 91, of Wiscasset, died Nov. 17 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a long illness.
He was born in Malden, Mass. on July 24, 1913, the son of Frank and Eliza (Stretton) Pierce.
He attended Malden schools and Northeastern University. In 1931, he joined the laboratory staff at Norfolk Paint and Varnish Co. in Quincy, Mass. In 1936 he was promoted to a development chemist and left in 1948 as Vice President and Technical Director. On Dec. 9, 1934 he married Glenis A. Hall. During the years 1941 through 1944, Mr. Pierce worked on the New England Defense Project in Cambridge, Mass. This was a civilian scientific group and reported to all branches of the military. Their responsibility was the development of camouflage for aircraft and airports. In the early 1940’s he assisted with the development of an accelerated laboratory method for the testing of copper-based antifouling paints used on ship bottoms for the Navy and maritime vessels. This work was co-coordinated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Laboratory and the William F. Clap Laboratory in Duxbury, Mass. In the late 1940’s he was employed with the color measurements laboratory at MIT under the direction of Professor Dr. Arther C. Hardy. The New England Color Council was part of this group. Mr. Pierce moved to Gloucester, Mass. in 1955 as Vice President and Technical Director of Tarr and Wonson, Ltd., who were producers of a full line of marine coatings. In 1956 and 1957 “Win” taught a course in Paint Technology at Northeastern University.
Retirement to Wiscasset came in 1972. For two years he was employed as a consultant to the coatings industry, and then decided to enjoy his love of boating, fishing, hunting, gardening, golf and woodworking.
He was a lifetime Honorary Member of the New England Society for Coatings Technology and a past president in 1941. He was also active in the International Society, a past member of the New England Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, the American Chemical Society and a member of Lincoln Lodge #3, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Wiscasset.
Mr. Pierce was an enthusiastic member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, U.C.C. and had served on most of its committees.
He was predeceased by one sister, Lilla Buck.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years; two daughters, Nancy L. McDonough of Somersworth, N.H. and Darryl A. Beliveau of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sat., Nov. 27 at First Congregational Church of Wiscasset. Burial will be at Chadwick cemetery in South China in the spring.

Harrison, George
July 2, 1926 - Oct. 25, 2004

George R. Harrison, 78, passed away Oct. 25.
A long time resident of Westport Island, George was the epitome of the Maine fisherman. He was a husband, father, grandfather and a good friend to many. born in Everett, Mass. on July 2, 1926, he lived in several Maine communities before settling on Westport Island. After serving in Europe during World War II, he married Louise Savage and raised a family, Ronald, Jeanette and Marie. A man of many talents, George flew a spotting plane for a large commercial seiners as a pilot. He owned and fished from a series of lobster boats and built homes on Westport Island.
George was a gentleman who loved to walk and will be missed by all who he chatted with along the roads and watersides.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Marie Harrison in 1977.
George is survived by his ex-wife, Louise Savage Harrison of Wiscasset; one son, Ronald Harrison of Westport Island; one daughter, Jeanette H. Brown; three grandchildren, Cynthia Brown, Dawn Brown and Ronald Harrison, Jr., close friends and relatives.

Connelly, John
Dec. 27, 1936 - Nov. 9, 2004

John E. “Jack” Connelly, 67, of Waldoboro, died the evening of Nov. 9 at Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta.
He was born Dec. 27, 1936 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of Thomas H. and Isabel R. (Earl) Connelly.
On July 9, 1960 he married the former Ernestine Black in Damariscotta Mills.
Jack attended Brooklyn schools and was a 1954 high school graduate in Rosedale, Long Island, N.Y. He served in the Air Force Reserve and worked many years with Creamer Volkswagen in Rockland before becoming a full time self employed carpenter. For more than 20 years he was firefighter for the town of Waldoboro and a member of the Waldoboro Firemen’s Association. He loved woodworking and building clocks and enjoyed reading. Jack was an avid NASCAR fan.
In addition to his wife of more than 44 years of Waldoboro, Jack is survived by a son, David T. and his wife Stacey of San Antonio, Tex.; daughter, Susan L. Bramhall and her husband Philip of Friendship; brother, Dennis Connelly of New Jersey; sister, Karen Brown of New Jersey; four grandchildren, Amand Kate and Alison Anne Bramhall of Friendship, Anna Kathleen and Aidan Matthew Connelly of San Antonio, Tex.; and several nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Shaw, Barry Roy
Dec. 5, 1968 - Nov. 14, 2004

Barry Roy Shaw, 35, of Pittston, died unexpectedly the evening of Nov. 14 at Inland Hospital, Waterville. He was born Dec. 5, 1968 at Gardiner General Hospital, Gardiner, the son of Milford R. (G.I.) and Barbara Jewett Shaw.
He attended Pittston Consolidated School, Pittston and graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1987. He worked for N.C. Hunt Lumber Co. in Jefferson for the past seven years and at Majors Appliances, Inc. in Farmingdale and Jewett Builders, Inc. in Pittston as a bookkeeper.
Barry has played hockey since he was 5 years old starting in youth hockey and all through Gardiner High School and a co-captain during 1987. He was a youth hockey coach for several years and was an active player for a floor hockey team on Sunday mornings in Randolph. Barry was very interested in NASCAR Racing and drove a stock car for a year in Wiscasset, prior to that he worked on the pit crew.
He was predeceased by his grandparents Milford W. and Marjorie Morang Shaw and Donald C. and Helen Caston Jewett.
He is survived by his parents G.I. and Barbara Jewett Shaw; his sister Dari Lee and her husband Theodore W. Zagwyn, Sr. all of Pittston; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 18, at Amesbury, White & Harmon Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. with Rev. Richard H. Freeman of the First Congregational Church, Pittston officiating. Burial will follow at the Whitefield Cemetery, U.S. Rt. 218, Whitefield.

Payne, Ella Hodgdon
July 4, 1908 - Nov. 15, 2004

Ella Hodgdon Payne, 96, of Waldoboro, died peacefully on Nov. 15 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta surrounded by her family. She was the widow of the late Honorable Senator Frederick G. Payne and Governor of the State of Maine.
Ella was born, July 4, 1908, in Mars Hill, the daughter of Josiah and Caroline Giberson Hodgdon.
From the time Ella was 11 years old, she visited Waldoboro staying with her sister, Marion Miller and her husband, John. In 1932 she came to Waldoboro to stay and owned and operated a beauty shop here for 15 years.
She was a staunch Republican and of all the places she lived, including Washington, D.C., and the Blaine House in Augusta, Waldoboro was her favorite. She found political life difficult at times because politics came first and family second.
She always showed interest in public affairs and the people of the town of Waldoboro. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro.
She is predeceased by her husband, the Honorable Frederick G. Payne and great-grandson, Michael Aaron Durkee.
Survivors include her son, E. Thomas Payne of Waldoboro; grandson, Frederick G. Payne II and wife Jean of Camden; granddaughter, Mary Payne Brotherton and husband Bud of Augusta; four great-grandchildren, Thomas Durkee and wife Kim of Waldoboro, Danica and Jonathan Payne of Camden, and Derek Brotherton of Augusta; six great-great-grandchildren, Zachary, Isaac, and Kyle Durkee of Waldoboro, Cameron Durkee of Bernard, Stephanie Brown of Hope, and Danielle Bither of Portland.
Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 18, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 19, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, with the Rev. Foster Williams officiating.
Interment will follow at the German cemetery in Waldoboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Maine Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, Health, and Wellness, 11 Parkwood Drive, Augusta, ME 04330 or Waldoboro Ambulance Service, P.O. Box J, Waldoboro, ME 04572.

Howard, Col. Willard F.
June 6, 1920 - Nov. 20, 2004

Colonel Willard F. Howard, 84, of Rockland, formerly of Union, died at Maine Medical Center on Nov. 20. He was born June 6, 1920, the oldest son of John Lowell and Addie Kennedy Howard of Union.
Mr. Howard graduated from Union High School, joined the U.S. Army in 1939 serving in the European theater during WWII. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge under General George Patten. He received the Purple Heart for wounds in battle. He continued his military career after World War II in the U.S. Army Reserves for a total of 32 years service, retiring with the rank of full Colonel.
He was a rural mail carrier for 28 years with the Union Post Office. He was a licensed electrician operating his own business for many years. He was the first fire chief of the Town of Union Volunteer Fire Department; he served on the Union Board of Education, was a town constable, served as a volunteer at the Owls Head Museum of Transportation and was a member of the Rockland Elks Club.
He is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Beatrice (Betty) Rich Howard; parents; sons, James Alan Howard and Jerome Adrian Howard; daughter-in-law, Joan Verrill Howard; and sisters, Edith Levensaler and Norma Holden.
Survivors include his special friend, Marion Hall and her family, of Rockland; brother, Warner Howard of Jefferson; daughter, Judith Grinnell of Union; grandchildren, Jennifer Grinnell of Raleigh, N.C., James Howard, Jr., of Rockland, Jason Howard of El Cerrito, Cal., and Jay Howard of Goose Creek, N.C.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., Wed., Nov. 24 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
A committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Wed., Dec. 1 at the original Maine Veteran’s Memorial cemetery Chapel, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
Memorial donations may be made in Willard’s memory to the Owls Head Transportation Museum, P.O. Box 277, Owls Head, ME 04854 or to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Stein, Gordon
Aug. 13, 1943 - Nov. 20, 2004

Gordon “Spike” Stein, 61, of Litchfield, died unexpectedly on Nov. 20, enjoying the beauty and magic of life while hiking with his beloved wife Freda in Bradbury State Park.
Spike was born Aug. 13, 1943 in Montana. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received a law degree from the University of Seattle Law School. He served as a VISTA attorney in Alaska before moving to Maine to work for Pine Tree Legal Services. He has practiced law in Hallowell, and, over the past 17 years, in Damariscotta with his partner Jim Gallagher at the firm of Gallagher and Stein.
Spike’s passion for life and the wonder of existence was not contained within him. It flowed freely, was shared widely, and found expression in everything he did. Whether building a walking path through the woods, growing immense vegetables, surf-kayaking big waves in Hawaii, riding a water-ski bike straight to the bottom of a lake, or building a bridge to nowhere, Spike saw grand potential in every idea and seized each project with zeal and his own special brand of grace. The story of his life is filled with unexpected twists and surprises. Throughout his journey Spike greeted every challenge as an opportunity and faced each morning with eternal optimism.
Spike enriched our world with his love and energy. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.
He is survived by his wife Freda Bernotavicz; his son, Andrew Stein of New York, N.Y.; his daughter, Hilary Stamp and husband Tom of Dayton, Ohio; his son, Chris Hale and wife Estelle of Anchorage, Alas.; his brother, Arthur Saunders and wife Linda of Canton, Ohio; his sister, Melinda and husband Robert Laverty of Wooster, Ohio; his grandchildren, Erik, Rhea, and Aidan; and his stepchildren, Alexa Bernotavicz of Jackson, N.H. and Jarad Bernotavicz of Portland.
He is predeceased by his first wife Anne Murnane.
A celebration of his life at Maple Hill Farm in Hallowell, on Sat., Dec. 11 from 2-4 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Tompkins, Dr. Pauline
Unknown - Nov. 19, 2004

Dr. Pauline “Polly” Tompkins passed away on Nov. 19, an influential leader in American and international higher education and a pioneer in higher education for women. A distinguished scholar, college president, dean of students, historian, writer, professor, political scientist, board member, and matriarch of the Tompkins family, Dr. Tompkins was predeceased by her brother Edward B. Tompkins and her nephew, Robert V. Tompkins.
She is survived by her nephews Gerry E. Tompkins, his wife, Joirá, and their children, Tatiana and Alex; James D. Tompkins, his wife, Ester, and their children, Bianca and Douglas; great nieces, Pauline Tompkins Jackson, her husband, Greg, and their children, Austin and Kelsey; Suzanne Tompkins Lang, her husband, Jamie and their mother Susan M. Tompkins, wife of Robert V. Tompkins, and Jeanne Tompkins, wife of Edward B. Tompkins.
A native of Rhinelander, Wis., Dr. Tompkins graduated from Pine Manor Junior College in 1938 and Mount Holyoke College in 1941, Phi Beta Kappa. She received an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) in 1942 and 1948, respectively. In addition, Dr. Tompkins has been awarded 11 honorary degrees including L.L.D. degrees from Hood, Mount Holyoke, Western and Wilson Colleges and an L.H.D. from Muhlenberg College. The Polly Tompkins Award for Distinction in Political Science was established in 1970 at Pine Manor College. Her doctoral dissertation, “American-Russian Relations in the Far East,” was subsequently published by MacMillan (New York) in 1949.
Dr. Pauline Tompkins was the first woman President of Cedar Crest College, Allentown, Penn. She served as President for 11 years. Starting in 1959, Dr. Tompkins was named General Director of the American Association of University Women and the AAUW Educational Foundation for eight years.
In 1964, President Johnson appointed Dr. Tompkins to the United States Advisory Commission on International Education and Cultural Affairs. She was the only woman on the nine-member commission. Dr. Tompkins also served as a member of the Committee for Education, part of President Kennedy’s Commission on the Status of Women.
Dr. Tompkins has been a Member of the Board, and Vice Chairman, of the American Council on Education; the Association of American Colleges; the Pension Funds of the United Church of Christ; and she was President of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities. From 1970-1978, she was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Chairman of the Board from 1974-1976.
The highlights of her career included extensive travel in the U.S. (all 50 states), and Australia/New Zealand, southern Asia, South Africa, the Middle East, USSR, Western Europe, and Central/South America. While in South Africa, she had the stimulating experience of meeting and getting to know many individuals deeply immersed in the anti-apartheid struggle including Helen Joseph, viewed by many blacks as “a mother of the struggle” and Winnie Mandela.
Her wish was to live independently on her farm called Singing Meadows in Edgecomb, which she did up until her 86th year. Polly made sure the family met at the farm for an annual reunion, which has fostered many years of heartfelt memories. She donated part of the farm to the Boothbay Region Land Trust to be preserved in perpetuity for public enjoyment.
Gifts in Dr. Tompkins’ memory may be made to Pine Manor College, Mount Holyoke College or Cedar Crest College.
A memorial service will be held in the fall of 2005 in Edgecomb.
