Mink, Constance Loraine
11/05/1936 - 05/05/2006

Constance Loraine Mink, of Friendship, died May 5 at the age of 69, at Shore Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rockland, after a brief illness. Constance, known affectionately as Connie, was born in Appleton on Nov. 5, 1936, the youngest of five children, to the late Ivan and Irene Johnson Mink.
As a child, she attended Appleton and Union schools and assisted on the family farm. Connie was later employed at GTE Sylvania in Waldoboro for 17 years and resided in Friendship throughout her adult life.
Connie is survived by two sons, Ronald Yattaw of Friendship, and Keith Yattaw and wife Michelle of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Eric Yattaw of Waldoboro, and Matthew Yattaw of Cushing; two brothers and their wives, Keith and Grace Mink of Appleton, and Lyndon and Marion Mink of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; and sister, Lyndall Wade of Portland. She is further survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who have all been very thoughtful and supportive during her illness.
Graveside ceremony 1 p.m., Thurs., June 15 at the Village cemetery behind the Friendship Methodist Church, followed by a celebration of her life at the Mink home in Friendship.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to The Friendship Ambulance Auxiliary Foundation, P.O. Box 40, Friendship, ME 04547.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Waldoboro.

Hutchins, Laura Craft

Laura Craft Hutchins, 87, of Waldoboro, passed away June 8 at Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport.
Laura was born March 6, 1919, in Bath, the daughter of William J. and Marcia H. Craft. She grew up in Bath and was a graduate of Morse High School and received her Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Maine in Orono.
Laura was a home economics teacher for several years in Presque Isle; Sharon, Mass.; and Bath.
She was an active member of the Waldoboro United Methodist Church, and past president of the United Methodist Women, and will be remembered for her love of people. She loved spending time with her family, was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed the beauty of the ocean, the changing of the seasons, and the laughter and playful ways of her grandchildren. She will be best remembered for her heartfelt giving, kindness, and sincere care towards others.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Erwin F. Hutchins, of Waldoboro; son, Brent E. Hutchins and wife Martha of Albion; daughters, Jeanne E. Hutchins of New Gloucester, and Carol A. Jacques and husband Corey of Saco; grandchildren, Michael D. Hutchins and wife Molly of Albion, Kathryn L. Willey and husband Charles of Waterville, Mark E. Hutchins of Albion, Margo L. Jacques of Saco, and Mitchell W. Jacques of Saco.
Visitation 6-8 p.m., Mon., June 12 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
Celebration of Laura’s life 2 p.m., Tues., June 13 at the United Methodist Church of Waldoboro, Friendship St., Waldoboro with Rev. Joseph Beardsley officiating. Burial will follow at the German Protestant cemetery in Waldoboro.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Waldoboro, P.O. Box 354, Waldoboro, ME 04572, or to The Salvation Army, 31 Payne Ave., Rockland, ME 04841.

Dow, Jr., Robert E.
02/10/1934 - 05/31/2006

Robert E. "Sonny" Dow Jr., 72, of Waldoboro, died May 31 at the Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro after a long illness.
Sonny was born Feb. 10, 1934, in Rockland, the son of Robert E. and Doris Williamson Dow Sr.. He grew up in Bath and attended Bath schools.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served during the Korean War.
Sonny was employed as an auto mechanic all his life, residing in California from 1974 to 1996, when he moved to Gettysburg, Penn. for a couple of years before returning to his home state of Maine in 1999.
He was a member of the Bath Elks Club.
Sonny is predeceased by his parents, and stepfather, Frank Borski, who raised him.
Survivors include two daughters, Vickie L. Miller, and Becky Mills, both of Gettysburg, Penn.; and four grandchildren.
Graveside service noon, Fri., June 16 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Johnson, PhD, Sven Justus
09/02/1921 - 05/04/2006

Sven Justus Johnson, PhD, of Damariscotta, past away peacefully on May 4 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, following a bout of pneumonia.
Dr. Johnson was born in Sundavall, Sweden, on Sept. 2, 1921. His family immigrated to the United States in the mid 1920’s, settling in New Jersey. Following high school, while employed as a chemist at Bell Laboratories, he met Marie Bauer. They were married in June of 1943.
Dr. Johnson served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII as a radio technician, and the airwaves changed his future course of studies, from chemistry to physics. While in the Coast Guard, he completed some of his college studies, thanks to the copious notes taken by Marie during her studies at Barnard College.
After the war, he attended the University of Connecticut. In 1959, he returned with his family to Sweden to pursue his doctorate degree in physics at the University of Sweden, in Uppsala. The Johnson family returned to the United States in 1969, settled in Southold, N.Y. and established Johnson Laboratories, a research and developmental company. Dr. Johnson was internationally recognized in fields of ultrasonic, medical and oceanographic research.
In the late 1980’s, Sven and Marie Johnson moved their home and business to Maine.
Dr. Johnson was predeceased by his wife, Marie.
He is survived by a sister, Nancy of Massachusetts; daughters, Susan Johnson Orton of Roxbury, N.Y., and Barbara Anlér of Knivsta, Sweden; grandchildren, Jessica Anlér of Knivsta, Sweden, Theresa Anlér of Uppsala, Sweden, Erica Pivko of Kingston, N.Y., Karen (Kajsa) Pivko of Everett, Wash., and Sven Edward Johnson of Damariscotta.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.

Farnsworth, Marie "Lucy"

Marie “Lucy” Farnsworth passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 92 at Harris Hill Nursing Home in Concord, N.H. on June 3, after leading a fulfilling and rewarding life enriched by family and the many friends she made along her journey.
Born the youngest of 13 children in New Brunswick, Canada, she moved to Waltham, Mass. where she met and married her husband, Charles. The moved first to Bath then to Damariscotta where she worked at Bath Iron Works until she became a mother devoting her time and unending energy to her children and the farm on which they lived for over 20 years. After the children grew and moved on, she worked at the Maine Guide Shirt Factory in Bath, then she and her husband moved back to Waltham, Mass.
After Charles died in 1972, she spent many years traveling the world with her sister and other special friends, having many funny and exciting adventures. She often expressed how rich, fulfilling and happy her life had been.
She lived seven years with her daughter and son-in-law in Webster, N.H. where she enjoyed the tranquility of country life. At her request, the last year of her life was spent at Harris Hill where she became well loved for her sense of humor and easy disposition.
She had expressly requested no wake or funeral be held but that she be interred quietly by her family with her husband in Damariscotta.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Gaye and Rich Marrotte of Webster, N.H.; and family residing in the Damariscotta vicinity: son, Earl Farnsworth and companion Cindy; grandchildren, Keith and Pam Farnsworth, Karen Farnsworth, Amber and Richard Tonry, Mona Buffum, and Jeff Templeton; and great grandchildren, Torry, Mary, Gregory, Lydia, Christina, John, Annie, and Hollis.
Those of us she has left behind will remember her with love for her love and kindness, good humor and mischievousness. She was a remarkable lady who made this world a special place by being part of our lives – you mattered, Mum!

Benner, Earle H.
01/02/1912 - 06/08/2006

Earle H. Benner, 94, of Bristol, passed away June 8 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. The son of Ozro M. and Jennie (Robinson) Benner, Earle was born Jan. 2, 1912, at home in Bristol.
For nearly 30 years, he worked at Round Top Farms in Damariscotta. Relocating to L.R. French Plumbing and Heating, he remained there for nine years, prior to accepting a management position at Round Top.
Earle was a member of the Bristol Lodge of Masons for over 60 years, a member of the Seaside Grange in Bristol for over 70 years, and a lifelong Red Sox fan.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Lillian (DeVoe) Benner, in 1994.
Earle leaves three children, Donald E. Benner of New Harbor, Barbara Fossett of Pemaquid, and Ozro I. Benner of Bristol; sister, Beatrice Sparrow of Bristol; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to be with the family 1-2 p.m., Mon., June 12 at the Damariscotta Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Belvedere Rd., where his service will follow at 2 p.m. He will be laid to rest with his wife at the Bristol Mills Cemetery, following the service.
If desired, the family asks that donations be made to the Bristol First Responders, 104 Southside Rd., New Harbor, ME 04554.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.

Jackson, Dorothy H.
01/31/1929 - 06/14/2006

Dorothy H. Jackson, 77, passed away June 14 at her home in Waldoboro, surrounded by her family.
Dorothy was born Jan. 31, 1929 in Wiscasset. She was a daughter of John and Beatrice D’Argis Reay, and attended Lincoln Academy.
She was a floor supervisor for GTE/Sylvania for 17 years and most recently owned and operated the Friendly Stop Store and Redemption Center in Waldoboro for 15 years.
She enjoyed sewing, writing poetry, making quilts and listening and dancing to country music.
She was predeceased by her husband, Merrill A. Jackson, in 1978; sons, Rodney J. Jackson, Michael A. Jackson and Richard T. Jackson; daughter, Sally J. Jackson; sisters, Virginia Watson, Shirley Blake, and Phylis Peaslee; and brothers, Leroy Reay, Sherwood Reay, and Linwood Reay.
Survivors include her sons, Ronald M. Jackson and wife Donna of Washington, and James W. Jackson of Waldoboro; daughters, Joyce M. Jackson and husband Donald Prior of Cushing, Marilyn L. Teele and husband Burton of Boothbay, and Suzanne F. Hawkins and husband Bryan of Mebane, N.C.; companion, Dana Gilman of Waldoboro; sister, Barbara Jenness and husband Charles of Lyman; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Celebration of Dorothy’s life 3 p.m., Fri., June 16 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, with Dana Dow officiating.

Johnston, Arthur
07/28/1914 - 07/04/2008

Arthur Edwin Johnston, 93, passed away peacefully on July 4 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Washington, July 28, 1914, the son of William Staples Johnston and Veda-Mae Brooks Johnston.

A graduate of Columbia University, with a Master's degree from North Carolina State University, he worked as a technical writer for Western Electric for 20 years. Upon retiring, he founded his own real estate company, Johnston Associates. For the next 20 years he was also an instructor in economics and real estate at Forsyth Technical Community College.

A member of Mt. Olivet Lodge, Washington, and of the York Rite bodies, Winston-Salem, N.C., he was a past Commander of the Winston-Salem York Rite. He was also an Eagle Scout and Scout leader with Troop 700 in Winston-Salem, N.C. A member of the Grange for over 60 years, he was an avid gardener and also enjoyed woodworking. For 52 years he was a faithful member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in North Carolina, where for many years he was Superintendent of the Sunday School.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Dunkel Johnston; four children, Margaret Ohlenschlaeger and husband Peter of Atlanta, Ga.; Georgia Kathryn Johnston of St. Louis, Mo.; William Johnston and wife Susan of Mechanicsville, Va., and Elizabeth Arbittier and husband Douglas of York, Penn.; nine grandchildren; sister Marjorie (Mrs. Calvin Carney) of South China; sisters-in law, Connie Johnston of Washington, Joyce Johnston and Lorraine Bearce, both of Damariscotta; half brother Burton Ludwig, Jr., of Washington; and many devoted nieces and nephews.

Memorial service 2 p.m., Sun., July 13, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Timothy's Church, 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Reed, Richard
02/23/1934 - 06/28/2008

Richard E. Reed, 74, of Boothbay Harbor, died June 28 at his daughter's home in Cumberland. He was born Jan. 23, 1934 in Boothbay Harbor, a son of George Reed, Jr. and Phyllis Hodgdon Reed. He grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1952. He was a basketball star during his high school years. He attended S.M.V.T.I in South Portland.

He worked as a machinist at Maine Yankee in Wiscasset for 28 years. He later worked for Hodgkins Machinery in Randolph for nine years. He also owned and operated the Boothbay Dairy Freeze for 12 years.

He built a home for his family, which they have lived in for the last 45 years. He loved the outdoors all year round. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved working and planting his gardens each year.

Richard was predeceased by a daughter, Laurie Reed and son, George Reed III.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Suzanne Greenleaf Reed of Boothbay Harbor; daughter, Colette Howell and husband Paul of Cumberland; son, Michael Reed of Alaska; four grandchildren, Jessica Reed of South Portland, Jonathan Richard Howell of Cumberland, Benjamin Scott Howell of Cumberland, and Ellie Marie Howell of Cumberland; daughter-in-law, Maryann Reed of South Portland, and numerous family and friends.

Funeral July 2 at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Burial followed in the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boothbay Region Fish & Game Club, c/o Dabney Lewis, 9 Lewis Lane, Boothbay, ME 04537.
