Ella E. Grant
1998-07-23

Ella E. Grant, 92, of Otisfield died Thursday at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Windham, May 2,1906, the daughter of Charles and Lucy Ann Field Varney.

She attended school in Windham and had been a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of the Oxford Assembly of God Church and had taken Global Youth Evangelism Courses. She enjoyed knitting,embroidery and reading.

On September 5,1926 she married Scott Grant who died in 1979.

Survivors include her eight children, Gerald of Hebron, Harold of Norway, Paul of Saco, Ann E. Kahkonen of South Paris, Elizabeth Audet of Boone,NC, Stanford of Ocean Springs,Mississippi, Richard of Lewiston and Mary Johnson of Lebanon,NH; 47 grandchildren, 86 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Grant was predeceased by a son, Millard, and a daughter, May Whiting.

Funeral services were held on Sunday at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls with Interment in the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.

Kenneth P. Gray Jr.
1998-08-13

Kenneth P. Gray Jr., 68, of Alton Road in Augusta and formerly of Oswego, N.Y., died Thursday, July 23 at his home after a brief illness.

Born in Boothbay on October 9, 1929, he was the son of Kenneth P. Gray Sr. and Muriel A. (Brewer) Gray.

He was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School, class of 1947, and was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.

Mr. Gray had been employed by Nicholson and Hall Corp., and previously for Nine Mile Point Two nuclear power plant in New York.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 964, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a 39-year member of the Wiscasset Masons, and was past commander of Fitzgerald-Cummings Post 2 American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Sigrid D. (Engler) Gray of Augusta; two sons, Peter R. Gray and his wife, Lori of Elkins, West Virginia and Kenneth D. Gray of California; a brother, Donald Gray of Newry; a sister, Lillian Smithwick of Augusta; a grandson, Tyler J. Gray of Elkins, West Virginia; a best friend, William Chamberlain of Bath, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews and a cousin.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to: HealthReach Hospice of Augusta, P.O. Box 1586, Waterville, ME 04903-1568.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

Elizabeth Graycar
1998-12-03

Elizabeth ``Dee" (Draper) Graycar, 50, of Braintree, Mass., formerly of Milton, died Sunday, November 29 after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Mitchell Draper Jr. of Yarmouth and Squirrel Island.

She was a graduate of Milton Academy and magna cum laude from the Boston University School of Nursing.

Mrs. Graycar dedicated her life to her family and to nursing. She was currently employed by the Visiting Nurse Association of Boston as an early maternity discharge nurse and lactation consultant.

She also enjoyed her long-time involvement with Longaberger Baskets.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Paul J. Graycar, daughters Robin and Katie, and son, Paul Graycar III, all of Braintree; and a sister, Elly Draper Pendergast of Weston, Mass.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. at the First Parish (Unitarian-Universalist) Church in Milton, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Squirrel Island Preservation Fund, c/o Charles Sterling, 7 Sanborn Street, Winchester, Mass. 01890.

Dr. Ross W. Green
1998-06-25

Dr. Ross Wentworth Green, 81, of Falmouth, died Sunday, June 14 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The son of Alexander Ross and Margaret (Shaw) Green, he was born October 8, 1916 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. At the age of three, he moved with his family to Falmouth, Mass. He attended schools there and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1934.

Dr. Green earned his B.S. degree from Boston University in 1940. He graduated from Tufts Medical School and received his M.D. degree in 1944.

He served an internship and surgical residency at Boston City Hospital and additional residencies at Memorial Hospital, Worcester, Mass. and Pondville Cancer Hospital, Walpole, Mass. When the Coconut Grove fire occurred in 1942, Dr. Green had the opportunity to assist in the treatment of burn victims. The experience inspired a lifelong interest in the treatment of burns.

Medically deferred from military service, Dr. Green was employed by Harvard Medical School during World War II. It was there that he first began refining his interest in the treatment of burns as a surgical researcher. His work on the treatment of both burns and shock was acknowledged by the military as of ``Great Importance in The General Program of Research on Problems of Military Surgery."

Dr. Green did his Surgical Preceptorship at Central Maine Medical Center with the late Dr. William V. Cox, and received his certification from the American Board of Surgery in 1947. In March of 1951 he opened his own practice in Auburn, where he performed general surgery and specialized in burns and cancer. He held surgical privileges at St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston; Stephens Memorial Hospital, Norway; and Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta; and most importantly, Central Maine Medical Center. During a distinguished career at C.M.M.C. he served as chief surgeon of the General Surgical Section, director of the Cancer Clinic, and director of Burn Services.

In the early 1970s, he helped to develop Maine's first state burn unit in collaboration with the late Dr. Richard Britton, former chief of the General Surgery Department at Maine Medical Center.

Dr. Green retired from clinical practice in 1977, but was employed as a medical consultant in Portland and Biddeford, from 1978-1988, and with the State of Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Disability Determination Services at Augusta from 1980-1985.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he also held senior membership in The New England Surgical Society, The Maine Medical Association, the Androscoggin County Medical Society, and the American Burn Association. Over the course of his career he was a frequent contributor to many medical periodicals.

Dr. Green was fascinated with ships and the ocean, and was widely known as a builder of museum-quality model ships. His models are owned by collectors coast to coast. He was an avid hockey fan, having played while attending Boston University, and also enjoyed golf, reading, researching and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, the former Anna Goodspeed of Falmouth; a son and daughter-in-law, Ross A. and Judi Green of Cumberland and West Boothbay Harbor; two grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Green; two sisters, Mildred Goodspeed of Portland, and Gladys Baltz of Falmouth, Mass.; a sisterin-law, Natalie Klemm of Redding, Calif.; three nieces, Nancy and Margaret Goodspeed of Portland, and Connie Fitzgerald-Desmond of Conn.; two nephews, Dick and David Fitzgerald of Florida; a cousin, Owen, of New London, P.E.I.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Martha Nancy Green in 1978.

Services will be private. Burial will take place at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

Robert T. Greenleaf, Jr.
1999-05-06

Robert T. Greenleaf, Jr., 83, Westport Island, died May 3 at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

He was born on Westport Island, a son of Robert T. Sr. and Mary J. Ruth Greenleaf, and attended local schools.

On Oct. 23, 1935, he married Carrie E. Rattleff. She died July 1, 1996.

During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Greenleaf was a lobsterman his entire life, working up until his illness.

He enjoyed dancing, hunting, fishing, and watching wrestling.

He was predeceased by a son, Eugene Greenleaf, who died in 1966, and by a daughter, Eleanor M. Belanger, who died in 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce A. Cressey of Freeport and Marcella E. Davis of Phippsburg; two sons, Robert T. Greenleaf, III of Freeport and Neil T. Greenleaf of Westport; three sisters, Ada Colby of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mary Parker of Somersworth, N.H., and Elizabeth Brown of Westport; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m. Fri., May 7, at David E. Desmond Funeral Home, Bath, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Fri., May 21. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Albert Greenleaf Sr.
1999-04-29

Albert G. Greenleaf Sr., 74, of Westport Island, died Thursday, April 22 at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.

Born on Westport Island on July 7, 1924, he was the son of Robert T. and Mary Jane (Routh) Greenleaf Sr.

He attended Westport Southend Schools and worked as a lumberman for his father. On January 26, 1957 he married Mary Louise Murray. Mr. Greenleaf truly enjoyed working as a fisherman for several years and also worked at Stinson's Canning Company in Bath where he held various positions.

Mr. Greenleaf was an avid hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Greenleaf of Westport Island; three sons, Steve Greenleaf and Alan Greenleaf, both of Old Town, and Albert Greenleaf Jr. of Westport Island; two daughters, Carol Greenleaf and Brenda Redding, both of Old Town; two stepsons, Wayne Pelletier of Conway, New Hampshire, and Paul Pelletier of Charleston, Rhode Island; one stepdaughter, Kathy Lindey of Vassalboro; one brother, Robert T. Greenleaf Jr. of Westport Island; three sisters, Ada Colby of St. Petersburg, Florida, Mary Jane Parker of Somersworth, New Hampshire, and Elizabeth Brown of Westport Island; several grandchildren; many great-grand-children; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Greenleaf was predeceased by one stepson, Robert J. Pelletier, in 1994, and three brothers, Amos, James, and Gilbert Greenleaf.

A graveside service will be held at Greenleaf Family cemetery on Westport Island at a later date. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Harriet L. Grindell
1998-11-05

Harriet Louise (McPhee) Grindell, 84, died Tuesday, November 3 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Woolwich on October 15, 1914, she was the daughter of William George and Ethel Cora (Blackman) McPhee.

Mrs. Grindell graduated from Wiscasset High School in 1933 where she enjoyed playing on the basketball team. On November 9, 1941, she married William ``Joe" Frederick Grindell. She worked as an executive secretary for Bill Gove Enterprise, retiring in 1972.

Mrs. Grindell was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset and the Morse High School Scholarship Committee for the Class of 1933. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her grandchildren and reading.

She was predeceased by her husband William ``Joe" Frederick Grindell in 1994; two brothers, Ellsworth Bradley McPhee and William George McPhee Jr.; two sisters, Georgia Gretta Gove and Geraldine Eleanor Robinson.

Survivors include her son, Michael T. Grindell of Wiscasset; two grandchildren, Tiffany Grindell and Thomas Grindell; two special nieces, Elizabeth Grindell Fowles of Merrimack, N.H. and Judy Podziak of Bath; and many other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Greenlawn Ceme-tery in Wiscasset. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick 04011; American Heart Association, 20 Winter Street, Augusta 04330; or to the American Diabetes As-sociation, 8 Crosby Street, Augusta. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Victor A. Guay, Sr.
1999-02-18

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Victor A. Guay, S., 63, formerly of Poland, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 9.

He was born in Alfred, Maine on April 21, 1935, the son of Arthur and Rosilda Labbe Guay.

He attended school in Alfred and served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army.

Prior to his retirement he had been a mechanic for the Town of Poland for 22 years.

He married the former Viola Page on May 2, 1959.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother of Biddeford; two sons, Douglas of Poland and Victor, Jr. of Saco; two daughters, Debra, and her husband, Warren Smith, of Oxford, and Andrea and her husband, Wendell Smith, of Poland; two grandsons, Brian Brackett and Christopher Smith both of Oxford.

Funeral Services were held at Monday, February 15 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home.
