Edward L. Guay
1999-05-06

LEWISTON - Edward L. Guay, 78, died Thursday, April 29, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was born May 11, 1920, in Mexico, the son of Paul V. and Josephine (Martin) Guay and attended school in Old Town.

Mr. Guay worked most recently at Howel Laboratories in Bridgton. Prior to that he worked as an electrician for Dielectric Communications Co. in Raymond. He had also been employed at C. B. Cummings in Norway and had been a foreman for Sioux Moccasin in Harrison and Massachusetts.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bridgton and Norway, the American Legion in Harrison, Lakeside Grange in Harrison, Western Maine Fish & Game, White Mountain Stamp Club, and was a Boy Scout Pack Leader in Harrison.

Mr. Guay made his home in Harrison for the past 48 years.

He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WW II, as a medic.

He met his wife, Marie T. Cap, while serving in Paris, France. They married April 6, 1947.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years; two sons, Paul E. Guay of Boston, MA and Phillippe J. Guay of Harrison; one daughter, Rose Marie Mayes of North Bridgton; three grandchildren, Benjamin Guay and Emily Mayes, both of Harrison and Ethan Mayes of North Bridgton; one brother, Robert Guay of St. Augustine, FL and a sister, Rose Diviae of Lynn, MA.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Joseph's Church, High Street, Bridgton on Monday, May 3. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery in Harrison. Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton was in charge of arrangements.

Esther Emma Guyette
1998-11-26

AUBURN - Esther Emma Guyette, 87 of Mechanic Falls, died at the Auburn Nursing Home in Auburn, where she had resided since April of 1994.

Mrs. Guyette was born in Rutland, Vermont on May 11, 1911, the daughter of Milon and Edna Packard. She attended school in Rutland through the eighth grade.

She worked as a house wife, a factory worker, a seamstress, a cook, and did professional flower work. In 1969, she moved to Maine to open and operate a business, The Golden Chain Rock and Gem Shop. She loved to comb the mountains for that prize gem or crystal.

She will be remembered for her love of flowers as well as her love of Chow Chow dogs. She raised many Chow pups as a hobby and was known by many as the Chow Lady. She was a poet, and shared many of her unpublished works with family and friends throughout her lifetime,

Mr. Guyette was an active member of the Auburn Seventh-Day Adventist church. She devoted many years to leading the crafts depart. ment of their annual Vacation Bible School.

She married Garfield C. Guyette in 1931 and together they had six children. She was predeceased by Mr. Guyette, in 1957, and by two sons, Verlon G. in 1977 and Lionell in 1942.

She is survived by three sons, Garth C. Guyette Of Rutland, VT, Jaime M. Guyette of Mechanic Falls, ME, and Robert L. Guyette of Auburn; and one daughter, Darlene B. Eccleston of Pittsfield, ME; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Guyette will return to the birthplace of her father, Stockbridge, VT, for her final testing place.

Friends and family may attend memorial services on Sunday, November 29 at 2 p.m. at the Oxford Advent Christian Church, Oxford. Interment will be in Stockbridge, Vermont.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls.

Eugene K. Garaudy
2000-02-03

Eugene K. Garaudy, 78, a long-time resident of Nobleboro and Alna, died Saturday morning at his home in Damariscotta. born November 10, 1921, in New Orleans, he was the son of Sidney H. and Lillian Langolis Garaudy.

He attended public schools in New Orleans, graduated from radio technical school, and served as a radio telegraph operator in the Merchant Marines for several years. He worked as a radio officer for Mobile Oil Company throughout his career.

In 1945 he married Gladys Mooney in Arlington, Massachusetts; they moved to Nobleboro in 1954, and in 1981, following his retirement, they moved to Alna. Mrs. Garaudy died in March of 1996, at which time he relocated to Damariscotta.

A life-long lover of animals, he donated both time and money to the Boothbay Region Humane Society. He was also a longtime supporter of the Pine Tree Society for Crippled Children, and Miles Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are three brothers, Francis W. of Ponchatoula, Louisiana; Claude of Kenner, Louisiana; and Edward of Van Nuys, California.

Services were held Wednesday evening, February 2, in the chapel at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. Burial will be beside his wife in the Alna cemetery in the spring.

Mr. Arnold A. Gardner
2000-01-13

BRIDGTON - Arnold A. Gardner, 72, died Friday, January 7, at a Bridgton hospital.

He was born at Bridgton on July 24, 1927, the son of Horatio and Alice Sanborn Gardner and graduated from Bridgton High School in the class of 1946.

He had been employed as a carpenter and handy man and had also worked at the Bridgton Knitting Mill and the Norway Shoe Shop.

Mr. Gardner enjoyed gardening and selling his vegetables.

He had lived in Bridgton all of his life and married the former Isabelle Sargent on December 2, 1950. She died on June 6, 1994.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda Gardner of Bridgton, Cathy Arris Hosty of Bridgton, and Cynthia Gardner of Raymond; one son, Jerry Gardner of Bridgton; nine grandchildren and one great-grand son.

A memorial service was held on Monday, January 10, at the Second Advent Christian Church in Bridgton. Arrangements were under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton.

Roger F. Gauthier Sr.
1999-05-13

Roger Francois Gauthier Sr., 72, died Friday, May 7, at his home on Eastern Avenue in Boothbay Harbor.

Born August 14, 1926 in Lewiston, he was the son of Ludgie and Medora Landry Gauthier.

He attended schools in Lewiston and was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS St. Paul. He owned Roger's Restaurant and Catering Service. He worked as a chef at Smuggler's Cove Restaurant, Ocean Point Inn and McSeagull's, in Boothbay Harbor. He met his wife, Betty, at Smuggler's Cove Restaurant, and married her in 1975.

Mr. Gauthier enjoyed cooking, gardening and many different activities. He loved people, life and Boothbay Harbor. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Abbott Gauthier of Boothbay Harbor; four daughters, Phyllis St. Laurant of Lewiston, Gail Ulmer of St. Petersburg, Florida, Jeanie Lewis of Phippsburg, and Tracy Gauthier of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Gary Gauthier of Auburn, Roger Gauthier Jr., and Troy Gauthier of Boothbay Harbor; two sisters, Pauline Roy and Connie Pelletier of Lewiston; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held on Monday, May 10 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. Dan McNutt officiated. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay.

Gail Gauthier
2000-03-09

Gail Gauthier, 41, of St. Petersburg, FL, died unexpectedly March 1 in St. Petersburg.

She was the daughter of Irene Sullivan of St. Petersburg and the late Roger Gauthier Sr. of Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include a sister, Phyllis St. Laurent of Lewiston; a brother, Gary Gauthier Sr. of Auburn; two half sisters, Jeanie Lewis of Phippsburg and Tracy Gauthier of Boothbay Harbor; two half brothers, Roger Gauthier Jr. and Troy Gauthier; a stepmother, Betty Gauthier; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements will be announced.

Roland Harrington Gibson
1999-01-14

RUTLAND, VT - Roland Harrington Gibson died on Tuesday, January 5, at Genesis Elder Care in Rutland, VT, where he had resided since June, 1995.

He was born September 15, 1916, in Waltham, MA, the eldest of four children of Roland Andrew Gibson and Carrie Horne Gibson. He grew up in the Waltham Highlands. He was educated in the Waltham Institute in Boston, MA.

He married Esther Louise Helgeson, who grew up in the same neighborhood as he, on April 11, 1942. He survived her by one month.

He is survived by their three children, Roland Leonard of Pawlet, VT; Peter Henry of Billerica, MA; and Barbara Louise of Jamaica Plain, MA; four grandchildren, Nathaniel and Thaddeus Gibson and Judith and Kaila Gibson-Okunieff. He is also survived by his brother Henry Gibson of Venice, FL and his sisters, Ethel Wheeler of Live Oak, FL and Corinne Ray of Ocala, FL.

Early in his career, he worked for the B.C. Ames Co., where he spent the Second World War as a critical worker in the machine tool industry. A number of positions in the craft of precision machinist with Waltham companies ultimately brought him to Sanborn Co., the early maker of electrocardiograph machines, which became a part of the Hewlett-Packard Co. Retirement in 1972, took him to Norway, Maine, where he built a house and began a second career in carpentry.

His second retirement gook him to Naples, FL in 1984. He resided there until 1994, when the ill health of his wife and him required a return to New England, so their children could care for them.

Mr. Gibson remained a member of Oxford Lodge from his time in Norway. He was an enthusiastic amateur radio operator and a member of the American Radio Relay League for decades. Barbershop singing also engaged him for a number of years. He was an active member of the Kiwanis of Norway-Paris and a member of MSAD 17 Region 11 Vocational Board.

A memorial service will be held this coming spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland, VT.

Esther and Roland Gibson
1999-06-17

RUTLAND, VT - Esther Louise Gibson died December 5, 1998 in Rutland, VT. Roland Harrington Gibson, her husband of 56 years died one month later on January 5, 1999.

Mrs. Gibson was born April 14, 1920, in Waltham, MA, the fourth of five children of Rudolph Leonard Heigeson and Judith Landstrom Heigeson.

Mr. Gibson Gibby was born September 15, 1916, in Waltham, MA, the eldest of four children of Roland Andrew Gibson and Carrie Horne Gibson. Both grew up in the Waltham Highlands and graduated from Waltham High School. Mr. Gibson took technical training as a machinist at Wentworth Institute in Boston. They married on April 11, 1942.

Mrs. Gibson began her business career as a clerk and typist in the Civil Service, interrupted it to raise their children, and returned to the business world where she held a number of positions, ending with that of Comptroller of North East Housing Inc. in Oxford. Also very active in civic affairs, she became the first woman appointed to the Board of Appeals in the city of Waltham in 1971.

After her move from Waltham to Norway in 1972, she became the President of Norway-South Paris Club of Business and Professional Women, as well as a district director of the organization. Retiring to Naples, FL in 1984, she continued her civic bent as an officer in her neighborhood association and perfected her life long craft skill to create award winning quilts.

A memorial service will be held at the Covenant Congregational Church in Waltham, MA at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18. Their ashes will be scatted in Pawlet, VT on Saturday, June 26. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Muriel L. Gilbert
1999-05-13

PORTLAND - Muriel L. Gilbert, 88, died Friday, May 7, 1999 at the Baron Center, Portland, where she had been a resident following a long illness.

Born in Lewiston on October 14, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Marie (Belanger) Lauze.

She was educated in the local Lewiston school. In 1935, she married Joseph Arthur Gilbert. He predeceased her in 1997.

Mrs. Gilbert was employed at the former Holmes & Stickney Shoe Manufacturing Company for 30 years. She resided in the Portland area for 32 years before moving to Bethel, where she lived from 1967 to 1998.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Snow's in Bethel.

Surviving are a daughter, Jeanne Collet of Windham; a son, James Gilbert of Westbrook; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three brothers, William, Raymond, and Harvey Lauze and five sisters, Eva Pormaleau, Irene Charest, Jean Wade, Core Dubois and Lianne Lauze predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 11 at St. Edmund's Church, Route 302, Westbrook. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements were under the care of the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel.
