Janice B. Gorham
2000-04-27

Janice B. Gorham Janice B. Gorham, 84, of Portland, died Tuesday, April 18 at a Portland Nursing Home after a brief illness.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, she was a daughter of Percy and Mona A. Gloucester Graham and was educated in the Swampscott, Massachusetts Schools and graduated in 1933. She received her degree in social work from Boston University and worked for the State of Massachusetts in the Social Welfare Department.

Mrs. Gorham and her late husband, Joseph P. Gorham, lived for many years in the Augusta and Manchester area and summered in Newagen. After his retirement in 1969 they became full time residents of Newagen. Mr. Gorham died in 1971.

Mrs. Gorham moved to the Augusta area in 1972.

While living in Manchester she was involved with the Manchester Garden Club, was a local artist painting in watercolor and pencil and enjoyed working in many mediums. She also worked for the Charity Ball in Augusta for many years.

Surviving are two daughters, Sally G. Perkins of Altadena, California and Katherine G. Wallace of Gorham; one sister, Doris Booth of La Jolla, California; and six grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery in Houlton at a later date. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home of South Portland.

Edna M. Gray
1999-09-23

Edna M. Gray, 93, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died Monday, September 21 at a South Portland Nursing Home.

Born December 1, 1905 in Washburn, she was the daughter of Albion and Myrty McCubrey Cheviot.

Mrs. Gray moved to Norridgewock as a young woman and attended Normal School in Farmington. She taught at the West Boothbay Harbor Grammar School. On June 22, 1926, she married Merlin H. Gray Sr.

Until 1957 she lived in Boothbay Harbor. For many years she was employed at the House of Logan in Boothbay Harbor. She moved to Lorrain, Ohio for four years and then moved back to South Portland where she was employed by Lerner Department Stores until her retirement. She was a member of the Thornton Heights United Methodist Church in South Portland.

Mrs. Gray was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1969, and by a son, Richard C. Gray, who died in 1987.

Survivors include one son, Merlin H. Gray Jr. of East Boothbay; four grandchildren, Mrs. Cathy (Gray) Hodgdon of East Boothbay; Mr. Dennis A. Gray of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Patrick (Jane) Murphy of Wiscasset; and Mrs. Ernest (Linda) Giles of Boothbay; several great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 24 at the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Anna Green
2000-08-31

Anna Rose Goodspeed Green, 81, of Falmouth, died Tuesday evening, August 22, at Seaside Nursing Home in Portland.

She was born in Randolph on June 9, 1919, daughter of Ernest and Olive M. (Paine) Goodspeed. She attended Gardiner schools, graduating from high school in 1937, and then attended Bradford Junior College, graduating in 1939. During 1938 she earned an honorary degree in Pianoforte from Trinity College of Music in London, England and later attended and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Secretary School in Boston, Mass.

Mrs. Green married Ross W. Green, Md. on December 6, 1946, who passed away June 14, 1998. For most of her life she was a homemaker, but early in her career she worked at M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass. and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass.

Mrs. Green was a past member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Auburn. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Green spent her summers on Ocean Point in East Boothbay and Juniper Point in Boothbay Harbor. She loved music, playing tennis, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Ross A. and his wife Judi S. (Sullivan) Green of Cumberland; two grandchildren, Emily A. and Ryan R. Green; one sister, Natalie Klemm of Tenant, Calif.; two nieces, Nancy and Margaret Goodspeed of Portland.

Mrs. Green was predeceased by her daughter Martha N. Green in 1978 and a brother, Ernest L. Goodspeed Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michaels Parish, 78 Pleasant St. Auburn, Maine, 04210. Arrangements by The Fortin Group, Lewiston and Auburn.

The funeral was private.

Robert Greenleaf Jr.
1999-05-06

Robert T. Greenleaf Jr., 83, of Westport Island, died Monday, May 3 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born on Westport Island, he was a son of Robert T. Sr. and Mary J. Ruth Greenleaf, and attended local schools.

On October 23, 1935, he married Carrie E. Rattleff. She died on July 1, 1996.

During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Greenleaf was a lobsterman his entire life, working up until his illness. He enjoyed dancing, hunting, fishing and watching wrestling.

He was also predeceased by a son, Eugene, who died in 1966; and a daughter, Eleanor M. Belanger, who died in 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce A. Cressey of Freeport, and Marcella E. Davis of Phippsburg; two sons, Robert T. III of Freeport, and Neal T. of Westport; three sisters, Ada Colby of St. Petersburg, Florida, Mary Parker of Somersworth, New Hampshire, and Elizabeth Brown of Westport; several grandchildren, great-grand-children, and great-great-grand-children.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 7 at David E. Desmond Funeral Home, Bath, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 21. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Martha Lelia Greenleaf
1999-12-02

Martha Lelia Greenleaf, 86, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, November 25 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

Born October 23, 1913 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Hayden and Lena Pinkham Greenleaf.

She attended Boothbay Harbor High School. In her early years, she was a waitress and a cook. In 1944, Ms. Greenleaf joined the U.S. Army serving as a postal clerk in Texas and California. At the end of the war, she returned home to Boothbay Harbor. She worked as a nurses aide at St. Andrews Hospital.

Ms. Greenleaf was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church, the American Legion in Boothbay Harbor, and the Boothbay Harbor Historical Society. She enjoyed reading and crocheting.

She was predeceased by her sister, Muriel Howard, with whom she made her home, and by her twin brother, Alfred Arthur Greenleaf in 1944.

Survivors include two nieces, Candice Prince and her husband William, of Charleston, West Virginia, and Heidi Hamby of St. Angustine, Florida; two grandnephews, David and Matthew Price of Charleston of West Virginia; and many cousins.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, November 30 at Ocean View cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Ruth C. Grimaldi
2000-08-17

Ruth C. Grimaldi, 67, of Boothbay Harbor, died Tuesday, July 18 in St. Anthony Hospital in Warwick, New York.

The daughter of Charles and Marjorie Schadegg, she was born November 24, 1932 in Paterson, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her husband, John Grimaldi.

Mrs. Grimaldi was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Hackensack, New Jersey.

Survivors include two sons, John Schadegg and Daniel Grimaldi, both of Montclair, N.J.; three daughters, Nancy Dieber, Patricia McCombs and Susan Grimaldi, all of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; one brother, Allan Schadegg of New Port Richey, Fla.; one sister, Marjorie Dombrowski of Boothbay Harbor; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 at the Harborview apartments at 23 School Street in Boothbay Harbor. Funeral services will immediately follow at the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay Harbor.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall of Boothbay.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, 4 Oak Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Mrs. Ruth I. Guilford
1999-12-30

WEST PARIS - Mrs. Ruth I. Guilford, 94, died Monday, December 27, 1999 at the Market Square Health Care Center in West Paris. She was a resident of 27 Fair Street in Norway.

Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, on April 11, 1905, she was the daughter of Freeman and Florence (Whalen) Smith Sr. She received her education in the Norway School System. She was an avid bingo player since 1937.

Mrs. Guilford was married in Norway on November 16, 1921 to the late Adelbert Guilford who died June 8, 1988. Survivors include three sons, Donald Guilford Sr. and his wife Louise of Norway; Eugene Guilford Sr. of Sarasota Florida, Richard Guilford and his wife Janice of South Paris; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Austin and her husband Donald of North Norway, Mrs. Patricia Krapovicky and her husband Alec of Oxford, Mrs. Judy Arsenault and her husband Maurice of Norway; 24 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Smith of Norway and Jack Smith of Miami Florida; and one sister, Mrs. Betty Davis of Norway. She was predeceased by three sons, Adelbert, Chuck and Howarth; a granddaughter Pamela Norton Mayberry; a great granddaughter Lisa Norton; a great grandson Kyle Ryerson; four brothers, Freeman Smith Jr., Bob Smith, Ira Smith and Melvin Cappy Smith; three sisters, Leonora Herrick, Estella Johnson and Dorothy Thayer.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Pine Grove cemetery in South Paris. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader and Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Ellen T. Gulliver
1999-04-29

Ellen T. Gulliver, 87, of Boothbay, died Thursday, April 22 at the Barron Center in Portland.

Born in Rainy River, Ontario, she was the daughter of George S. and Mary Ann Martin Timmons, and attended schools in Regina, Canada.

She worked for Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade and Douglas engineering firm in New York City.

Mrs. Gulliver was a member of the St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary, the Boothbay Region Garden Club, the Barter's Island Hall Association, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Boothbay Chamber of Commerce, where she served as past president.

Her husband, Richard, died previously.

Survivors include a son, Peter Gulliver; and a granddaughter, Nicole Gulliver, both of Bear Mountain, New York.

A funeral was held on Monday, April 26 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor. Father Royal Parent officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Dorothy J. Guslander
2000-01-13

Dorothy Joan Guslander, 87, of Bath, died Friday, January 7, 2000 at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 30, 1912, she was the daughter of Carl and Bertha Theresa (Kisch) Lewerenz. As a young girl she grew up in Culverson, Montana where she staked her claim with her parents. She worked at 3 M (Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing) at the end of World War II.

In 1946 she married Knute Clifton Guslander and moved to the family farm in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. After selling the farm in 1965, Dorothy moved to a house in town and worked at Lakeside Nursing Home until 1990 when she moved to Newcastle to live with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.

In 1993 she moved to the Plant Memorial Home in Bath.

Mrs. Guslander was a volunteer at Christ Lutheran Church and visited shut-ins. She enjoyed playing the accordion, fishing, sewing, gardening, feeding birds and entertaining friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Marchi and her husband Richard of Newcastle; four grandchildren, Christopher and Kendra Marchi, Vicky and Christine Zierden; one niece and one nephew.

She was predeceased by her husband and one daughter, Carla Zierden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 15 at St. Denis Catholic Church in North Whitefield with Fr. John L. Audibert officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plant Memorial Home, One Washington Street, Bath, ME 04530. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street in Bath.
