Dorothy V. Gaecklein
2003-01-23

Dorothy V. Gaecklein, 83, died Sunday, January 19 at her home in Boothbay Harbor.

She was born April 19, 1919 in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of E. Austin and Grace Murray Virden. She grew up in the Bronx and moved to North Jersey in the early 1930s. She graduated from Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, N.J. in 1936.

In 1940 she married Demestre "John" Ritchie.

She started work as a hairdresser, then she began to run Ritchie Insurance and Real Estate with her husband. In 1967, her husband died shortly after she sold the business and relocated to Southport, Maine.

In the late 1970s, she married John Gaecklein. She enjoyed fishing and camping with her husband and she loved gardening, needlepoint, arts and crafts and animals.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Gaecklein, Jr. in 1991, and her son, Robert Ritchie in 1961.

Survivors include her sons, Donald J. Ritchie of Hawthorne, N.J. and Alan D. Ritchie of Warwick, N.Y.; one daughter, Jeanne Mahlstedt of Pompano, Fla.; two stepsons, David Gaecklein of Boothbay Harbor and Ken Gaecklein of Edgecomb; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 23 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mrs. Gaecklein memory to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Robert C. Garceau
2003-02-27

Robert Charles Garceau, 45, of Wiscasset died in a auto accident on Wednesday, February 19.

Bob, as friends and family knew him, was born February 10, 1958 in Watertown, Conn., the son of Paul and Stella (Pinette) Garceau. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1976.

He was an ASME certified welder, a licensed boiler operator and a licensed stationary steam engineer. He married his high school sweetheart, Janine Lorette Lampron, in 1980 and was the father of three sons, Geoffrey (16), Jared (14), and Ethan (12). Mr. Garceau was employed as a welder at Universal Welding in Connecticut and in the Nuclear Power Industry for many years including Yankee Rowe and Maine Yankee Energy Centers. Most recently he worked for Androscoggin Energy as lead maintenance engineer.

In his high school years, he was a stock car racer, winning many events at Stafford Springs Motor Speedway in Connecticut. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and Maine Guide, a passion he shared with his wife and three sons. Bob, along with his family and friends enjoyed hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, boating, snowboarding and traveling together. He was a baseball coach in the Wiscasset community and was a wonderful friend and father figure to all children. He enjoyed playing softball and floor hockey for the past several years. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Mr. Garceau is survived by his wife of 22 years, his three sons, all of Wiscasset; his parents and a younger brother, Steven, all of Watertown, Conn.; and many loving relatives.

A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church in Wiscasset Sunday, February 23. A gathering of family and friends followed in the Parish Hall.

Patricia S. Garland
2002-08-22

Patricia S. Garland, 68, of Old Bridge, New Jersey died Saturday, August 17 at the John F. Kennedy Hospital in Edison, New Jersey.

She was born in Orange, New Jersey and lived in Old Bridge for 43 years. She was a noon hour supervisor with the Old Bridge Board of Education for 25 years, retiring in January 2002.

Mrs. Garland was a member of Holy Redeemer R.C. Church and a Democratic County Committee Woman, both in Old Bridge, for 25 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, James B. Garland, who died in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, James B. and his wife Kathy J. of Basking Ridge, N.J. and Joseph of Old Bridge; two daughters, Kathleen Garland, Patricia Garland, both of Old Bridge; a grandson, Trevor James Garland; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joanne and Calvin Cromwell of Westport Island; and many nieces and nephews.

A visiting hour will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, August 23 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's cemetery in Newcastle.

Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Helen Gary, 56
2000-08-11

Helen Gary, 56, died Sunday, July 30, at a Lewiston Hospital.

Born June 29, 1944, the daughter of C. Raymond and Nellie Rowe Segars, she graduated Pennell Institute in 1962 and was a graduate of Portland Barber School.

Mrs. Gary was the owner of J.J. Elms Again Restaurant in Mechanic Falls. Mrs. Gary was the current secretary of the Order of the Eastern Star Golden Sheath Chapter. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 150 and 4131 Order of the Eagles. Mrs. Gary enjoyed traveling, baking, sewing, playing video games and family gatherings.

She is predeceased by her mother, Nellie Segars, in 1992 and her husband, Richard N. Gary, who died in 1996.

Surviving are her father, C. Raymond Segars and stepmother, Phyllis Segars, of Gray; four sons, Joseph, of Mechanic Falls, Philip, of Brunswick, Robert, of Mechanic Falls, Andrew, of Springvale; one daughter, Lisa Chisholm, of Mechanic Falls; two sisters, Shirley Ordway, of Gray, and Elizabeth Robidoux, of Springfield, MA; and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.

"Zack" Gaulkin
2003-03-15

Zachary Gaulkin, 38, senior editor of This Old House magazine and the former editor of MaineToday.com, the Internet site for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, died March 20 in a traffic accident on the Maine Turnpike in Wells.

Mr. Gaulkin, known by friends and co-workers just as "Zack," was born in New York City and received his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard College in 1987.

He started working as a journalist in Massachusetts, worked for the Taunton Press in Newtown, Conn., for five years and came to Maine in 1998 to work for MaineToday.com. He left in January of this year to take the job at This Old House, of Concord, Mass.

Mr. Gaulkin, who lived in Kennebunkport, is survived by his parents, Geoffrey and Ellen R. Gaulkin of Weehawken, N.J.; his wife, Terri Ridlon Gaulkin; a son, Alexander Robb Gaulkin; two daughters, Sophia Raynes Gaulkin and Ava Ridlon Gaulkin; and one sister, Kati Gaulkin, all of Kennebunkport.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Gaulkin Family Fund, in care of Kennebunk Savings Bank, Lower Village Branch, P.O. Box 1520, Kennebunkport 04046.

James Gilbert
2001-05-03

James Mike Gilbert, 55, of Wiscasset, died Saturday, April 28 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with his family by his side.

Born in Waterville on October 23, 1945, he was the son of Bernard T. and Eleanor (Marshall) Gilbert.

He attended Waterville schools and graduated from Waterville High School, and from Thomas College. He was employed by Bath Iron Works in the engineering division.

On August 31, 1964 he married Pamela Getchell.

Mr. Gilbert enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He was an avid sports enthusiast and supported local high school teams including his favorite, Waterville Panthers Hockey. He always put his family first.

He is predeceased by his mother Eleanor Gilbert.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Gilbert of Westport Island; one daughter, Laurie LeRiche and her husband James of Greene; two sons, James M. Gilbert II of Westport Island and Matthew Gilbert of Corning, New York; his granddaughter, Abigail LeRiche; his father, Bernard Gilbert and his wife Gretchen of Waterville; his sister, Joan Grondin and her husband Richard of Wiscasset; his brother, Jon Gilbert and his wife Linda of Coronado, Calif.; his aunt, Cathy Marshall of Waterville; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of His Life was held on Wednesday, May 2 at St. Philips Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Winter Street, Augusta, ME 04330 or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, 1209 654 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10021.

Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

Edna A. Giles
2002-09-19

Edna Arlene Giles, 92, died September 10 at her nephew's home in Boothbay Harbor.

Born December 12, 1909 in Bristol, she was the daughter of Eugene Bradley and Bertha Feltis Bradley. She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools, graduating from high school in 1928.

She spent her life as a homemaker, working with her husband, Bickford Giles on their dairy farm.

Mrs. Giles was an avid bird-watcher. She also loved embroiding, crocheting, working on the farm, and in her younger years, going to local dances with her husband.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bickford Giles, and her nephew, John E. Bradley.

Survivors include her nieces, Estelle Appel of Boothbay and Barbara Theriault of Gulfport, Fla.; her nephews, Robert Townsend of Edgecomb, Edgar Bradley of North Windham, Conn. and Malcolm Hilton of Manchester, Conn.

A graveside service was held Friday, September 13 at Hillside cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, 40 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

William H. Glennon
2002-12-05

William H. (Snitger, III) Glennon, 79, of Wiscasset, died Monday, Nov. 25 after a long illness.

Born in Rochester, Penn., on April 21, 1923, he was the son of William H. Snitger Jr., and Catherine (Dunn) Snitger. He was raised at the family home in Beaver, Penn.

He graduated from Beaver High School and Duke University from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He attended graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh. During WWII, hel took a leave of absence from Duke to become a Naval Lt., Jr. Grade, and skippered an ATR57.

Mr. Glennon was a long-time company member of the Pittsburgh Playhouse, where he acted in more than 100 plays, directed, and established the Playhouse's Children's Theater, for which he wrote and adapted many successful productions. His children's plays are still produced nationwide.

Retiring to Wiscasset in 1967, he and his partner, Fred Burleigh, opened one of the first antique shops in the town, Coach House Antiques, currently Patricia Hutchinson Antiques.

In the 1970s and '80s, with retired educator Crosby Hodgeman, Mr. Glennon spearheaded the establishment of Operation Treasure Hunt, which provided arts enrichment programs to schools throughout the state of Maine under a federal grant.

He always maintained a love of and commitment to the education of children through the medium of the arts and storytelling and though retired from professional theater, he continued to write and publish plays for children.

Mr. Glennon was a member of the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville, board member of Sheepscot Valley Children's House in Wiscasset and a delegate to the Democratic state convention.

Survivors include a sister, Jane Patton of Damariscotta; as well as nieces Martha Jane Patton of Bridgeport, Conn., Amy Trunnell of Readfield, and Sarah Patton of Houston Texas; nephews James Patton of Houston, Texas and David Patton of Dallas, Texas; and several grandnephews.

A Celebration of his Life will be held at the Bailey Inn in Wiscasset, on Sunday, January 12, at 2 p.m.
