Eleanor M. Goggins
2000-11-30

Eleanor Merriman Goggins, 86, of Edgecomb, died Sunday, November 25 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.

Mrs. Goggins, a long-time teacher, had a career that spanned four decades in which she taught everything from college courses to grammar school. It was as a teacher of the third and fourth grades at the small Edgecomb Central School that she received the most satisfaction. Mrs. Goggins taught at the school from 1970 to her retirement in 1980.

Born in Topsham in 1914, she was the daughter of Ralph and Nellie (Hall) Merriman. She attended Topsham schools and was a member of the Brunswick High School class of 1932. She was graduated from the University of Maine in 1936.

Mrs. Goggins worked as a social worker in Portland in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

During World War II Mrs. Goggins was a Red Cross volunteer. She served aboard the hospital ship Blanche E. Sigman in the European and African Theaters. As well, she ran a USO in Brunswick and worked at a Prisoner of War camp in Jackson, Mississippi.

On May 25, 1945 she married Phillip L. Goggins in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Goggins lived in Bozeman, Montana from 1945 to 1948 where Mrs. Goggins taught technical writing to premed students at Montana State University.

She returned to Maine in 1948 and lived in Southport and Boothbay Harbor before moving to Edgecomb in 1956.

Prior to teaching in Edgecomb, she worked at the Marine Laboratory on McKown Point in West Boothbay Harbor and she taught at Rockland High School and Bristol High School prior to its closing.

Upon retirement she and her husband operated her 18th century farmhouse as a bed and breakfast for several years.

Her interests in history, genealogy, and literature led to her involvement in many organizations. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the American Overseas Association, the Maine Society of Magna Carta Dames and Barons, and the Jane Austin Society of North America. She was active in book and bridge clubs in the Wiscasset area. She was a member of the Society of Friends, Damariscotta Meeting.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include two sisters, Frances Beam of Topsham and Elizabeth MacKenzie of Chevy Chase, Maryland; one son, Philip R. Goggins of Edgecomb; a daughter, Amy Goggins of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, November 29 at the Friends Meeting House on Belvedere Road in Damariscotta. Donations may be made to the Wiscasset Public Library, High Street, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Mary Beverly (Colley) Goodine
2003-04-11

Mary Beverly (Colley) Goodine, age 73, of 100 State Street, Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully at Maine Medical Center in Portland on March 24, 2003.

She was born on October 11, 1929 in Portland and remained a Maine resident throughout her life. She lived in Gray as a child and later moved with her family to Bangor. She graduated from John Bapst High School and married Eugene Goodine of Bangor in 1949. She was a longtime resident of Houlton where she and Gene raised their two daughters. She enjoyed group card games with friends, bowling, gardening and family get-togethers. She moved to Gray for a short time and then to Portland in 1986 where she resided at 100 State Street for the past 17 years. There she made many new friends with whom she took frequent day trips to the coast and to Cole Farms Restaurant in Gray. She enjoyed being with her family and looked forward to visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Lucas Benjamin Dewitt, her husband and two brothers, James Colley of FL and Ronald Colley of Bangor, ME.

She is survived by two loving daughters; Elaine M. LaBrie and husband Patrick, of New Gloucester, ME and Nancy J. Dewitt and husband Gary, of Gilbert, AZ. She also has three granddaughters; Adrienne Marie (Dewitt) Stubbs and husband Steve, of Caribou,ME, Desiree Mae (LaBrie) Kelly and husband Sean, of Falmouth,ME and Danielle Jeanne LaBrie of Norwich,CT. and two precious great-grandchildren; Garrett Benjamin Stubbs and Brielle Grace Stubbs of Caribou,ME (they all called her "Guggy" ); one sister, Lucille (Colley) Anderson of Portland, OR; several nieces and nephews as well as many special friends.

A family memorial will take place at a later date and internment will be in Gray Village Cemetery, Gray, ME. In lieu of flowers donation in memory of Mary can be made to:National Kidney Foundation of Maine, 630 Congress Street, Portland, Maine 04101

Geneva R. Goranson
2000-10-19

Geneva R. Goranson, 64, of Westport Island, died Tuesday, October 10.

Born in Guerette, Maine,, the daughter of Wilfred and Alvina Rossignol, she graduated from Caribou High School in 1954. On June 9, 1955 she married C. Everett Goranson in Stockholm, Maine.

In 1959 they moved to Gardiner, bought farm land in Dresden and together they owned and operated the Goranson Farm on the River Road (Route 128) for 38 years. Mr. Goranson died in 1985.

Mrs. Goranson spent many years as a substitute teacher in many of the area schools. She enjoyed selling and dealing with customers at area Farmer's Markets and tending the peach trees and fall raspberries she grew on Westport Island. She lived with her friend Paul Warner at Westport in the spring and summer and they wintered in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Survivors include two daughters, Glennis A. Wright of Kittery and Janice M. Goranson of Dresden; one son, James E. Goranson, also of Dresden; six grandchildren; two sisters, Geri Goranson of Augusta and Joanna Hebert of Randolph; two brothers, Richard Rossignol of Guerette and Dan Rossignol of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Elizabeth F. Gordon
2000-11-02

Elizabeth F. Gordon, 81, a longtime resident of Woolwich, died Friday, October 27 at her home.

Born in New Jersey on January 23, 1919, she was the daughter of William W. and Erma (Bundy) Fortney.

Mrs. Gordon graduated from Suffern New York high school where she was on the staff of the first Panorama Yearbook. She was the first Zoology graduate form Syracuse University with Summa cum Laude honors.

On January 13, 1944, she married Leslie W. Gordon. They lived in Suffern, New York most of her life and she was employed by the Rockland County Department of Social Services. The Gordons, along with their pets, vacationed at their Maine home for many years and became full-time residents in 1978. They wintered in a travel trailer in Roanoke, Virginia, Big Ben, Texas, Mexico, Yellowstone, and the Canyon Lands of the Southwest before their final trip, a ferryboat ride to Alaska, in 1994.

She loved cats, traveling, nature and music. Her cat, Tiger, and learning the Celtic Harp filled her life with much pleasure.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie W. Gordon, on May 13, 1994.

Survivors include one son, Andrew W. Gordon of Ramapo, N.Y.; two nieces, Erma Oles of Hyde Park, N.Y. and Joan Kehoe of Scarsdale, N.Y.; three nephews, Jed Hayden of Missouri, Ronny Gordon of Florida and Bill Mueller of Cotuit, Mass.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 2 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203 or to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

Virginia H. Goring
2001-12-20

Virginia H. (Harward) Goring, 89, of Worcester, Mass., died Saturday, December 15 in UMass Memorial Hospital, Memorial Campus after an illness.

Born in North Edgecomb, she was the daughter of Robert T. and Florence (Huff) Harward. She attended the Massachusetts School of Art. She was a librarian at the Winchester Library and a watercolor artist. Mrs. Goring was a member of the Congregational Church in North Edgecomb.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the discretion of the family. There are no calling hours.

Miles Funeral Home in Holden, Mass. is directing arrangements.

Winifred M. Gott
2001-04-05

Winifred M. Gott, age 88, of Brunswick, died Sunday, April 1 at the Freeport Nursing Home.

Born in Wiscasset on June 11, 1912, she was the daughter of Alton and Edna Winslow Erskine. She attended Wiscasset schools and was a 1929 graduate of Wiscasset Academy.

In 1933 she married Gerald H. Gott Sr. He died on October 24, 1980.

Mrs. Gott was a homemaker and enjoyed tremendously the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For several years she worked for families first in Bath and later in the Brunswick area.

She was a former member of the Bath American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are three daughters, Lois Hyde of Lakeview Plantation, Patricia Bergeron and Mary Ellen Cooper, both of Brunswick; five sons, Gerald Gott Jr. of South Harpswell, Victor and Marshall Gott, both of Brunswick, Merle Gott of Topsham, and G. William Gott of Woolwich; one brother, Hollis Erskine of Littleton, N.H.; four sisters, Helen Gorham of Damariscotta, Cora Barnes, Marcia Munsey and Pearl Skillin, all of Wiscasset; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grand-child; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, April 3 at the Stetson's Funeral Home in Brunswick. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 4 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. William C. Imes officiating. Internment will be later in the spring at Varney cemetery in Brunswick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Avon 3 Day to sponsor Mary Ellen in a walk, c/o Mary Ellen Cooper, 59 Chamberlain Avenue, Brunswick, ME 04011.

William H. Gove Sr.
2001-12-20

William H. "Bill" Gove Sr., 89, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2001 at Atlantis, Florida.

Born on January 25, 1912 in Calais, he was the son of Howard and Laura Gove. He attended Morse High School in Bath, graduating in 1930.

Mr. Gove started his business career with the Beech Nut Packing Company, operating a territory that covered Aroostook County. In 1947, he became Sales Development Manager of the 3M Company in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

In 1953, he went into the speaking profession as a motivational speaker. During his speaking career he gave over 5,000 speeches. He was considered the "Speaker's Speaker." Mr. Gove was one of the first to be inducted into the International Speakers Hall of Fame and the first to receive the prestigious Cavett Award, known as the "Oscar" of the speaking world.

In 1990, he received the Toastmasters International Golden Gavel Award, an award also received by other notable people such as Walter Cronkite, Art Linkletter, Lowell Thomas, Mark Russell, Dr. Joyce Brothers and Dr. Robert Schuller.

Although approaching the age of 90, he remained extremely active as chairman of the advisory board of the Wilson Learning Corporation. He continued to give speaking workshops drawing attendants from all over the world, and maintained a full speaking schedule as well.

Survivors include his wife, Ada of Atlantis, Fla.; his children, Harriet Stone and her husband Tom of Palm City, Fla.; Nancy Wenzel of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Bill Jr. and his wife Deborah of Wiscasset; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His first wife of 52 years, Georgia McPhee Gove, died in 1987.

Family services were held on December 11 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Ian B. Graham
2001-09-06

Ian B. Graham, 59, of Wiscasset, died August 28, 2001 at Miles Memorial Hospital.

Born April 30, 1942 in Providence, R.I., he was the son of William W. and Marian (Chapman) Graham. He graduated from Cranston East High School in 1960. He entered the United States Navy and was employed as a truck driver for 30 years by Colfax, now known as Central Soya Inc.

On December 31, 1977 he married Nancy Grayson.

Mr. Graham was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lincoln, R.I.; the Elks Lodge in Palisades, N.J. and St. Philips Episcopal Church in Wiscasset.

He was predeceased by one son, Charles W. Graham on July 27, 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy A. Graham of Wiscasset; three sons, William Graham of Berlin N.H., Robert E. Grayson Jr. of Lynn, Mass., and Thomas P. Grayson of Brunswick; three daughters, Patricia Graham of Clearwater, Fla., Victoria Humphreys of Cranston, R.I., and Michelle Grayson of Brunswick; six grandchildren and six adopted children.

Visiting hours were held Friday, August 31 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A graveside service was held Monday, September 3 at Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset.
