Merle F. Greenleaf
2001-02-01

Merle F. Greenleaf, 87, of Boothbay, died Monday, January 29 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born February 17, 1913 in Boothbay, he was the son of Melville T. and Nettie Dodge Greenleaf. He grew up locally and graduated from local schools.

Mr. Greenleaf saw Route 27 develop from a horse path to a gravel road and later further developed as the automobile gateway to Boothbay Harbor.

During World War II he served in the Army Air Corp.

He was an auto mechanic at Haggett's Garage in Wiscasset, Strong Chevrolet in Damariscotta and locally at Leavitt's, Elms and Spofford's. He also was the owner of Merle's Auto Service, which was a pick-up and delivery service of vehicles from his home.

Mr. Greenleaf enjoyed tinkering, fixing and repairing vehicles and enjoyed camping, traveling to Florida.

He was a member of the Edgecomb Grange and the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Catherine Carroll Greenleaf; one son, James and his wife Brooke Greenleaf of Boothbay; one daughter, Eleanor and her husband Zacharias Mavodones of Westbrook; one granddaughter, Hailey Greenleaf of Boothbay; two step-grandchildren, Julie Bernier of Westbrook and John Mavodones of Bangor; one great-grandchild, Spencer Bernier of Westbrook; one sister, Christine Webber of Damariscotta; and one nephew, Wesley Day of Des Moines, Iowa.

He was predeceased by his sister, Emily Greenleaf Day.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday, January 31 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 1 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor with Rev. Raymond Picard officiating. A spring burial is planned.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Vernon A. Griffin
2003-04-25

Vernon A. Griffin, 77, a resident of 1138 Lewiston Rd., New Gloucester died Wednesday, at Clover Health Care Facility.

He was born in Lewiston, November 23, 1925, a son of Vernon A. and Zelma Mae (McPhee) Griffin.

Mr. Griffin was past commander and 31-year member of the American Legion Post #86 of Gray.

He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include daughters, Lorraine Griffin, Fran Dupont, Debra Bolduc, Kristi Hawkes, and her husband, Tom; Jamie Robbins and her husband, Art, all of New Gloucester; sons, Vernon Griffin and his wife, Elaine of Casco; Gard Griffin and his wife, Vickey, Kenard Griffin and his wife, Sheryl, both of New Gloucester; and David Griffin and his wife, Leah of Greene. He is also survived by a brother, Lawrence Griffin and his wife, Jean of Santa Rosa, Calif. Also survived by 35 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Edward Griffin, his wife, Berta Griffin, and a daughter, Nancy Gilblair.

Committal services were held at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. Following the service, family and friends gathered at American Legion Post #86, Gray.

Arrangements were by the family-owned Dillingham & Son Funeral Chapel, 62 Spring St., Auburn.

Gleason R. Gamage
2005-02-03

Gleason R. Gamage, 96, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away Monday, January 24, at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor after a brief illness.

Born, July 30, 1908 at Newagen, he was the son of Elmer Ellsworth and Alice Poore Gamage, and was educated in local schools.

On May 8, 1933, he married his childhood sweetheart, Virginia Reed.

Mr. Gamage started out in carpentry and then went to Salem, Mass. to work for Atwood & Morril Co. After returning home he went to work at Samples Shipyard during World War II. Later he went into business for himself as a local contractor, building many fine homes and commercial buildings in the area.

Upon retiring, he and his wife spent about 30 winters in Jensen Beach, Fla. During that period they enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean, trips to Europe and Hawaii and numerous bus trips across the United States.

Mr. Gamage was a life member of Seaside Lodge #144, member of the Boothbay Harbor Historical Society and Boothbay Region Humane Society.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Virginia Reed Gamage of Boothbay Harbor; one sister, Emily Blake of Norway, Maine; numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Charlotte Gardner
2004-08-06

Charlotte Erva Gardner, nee Davis, 86, died August 1.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of George P. and Erva England Powles Davis, she attended schools on Long Island, New York, and graduated from Hofstra University. Charlotte married George "Tim" Gardner, who died early in the marriage. She then married F.R. Linsenmeir.

Charlotte spent summers in Maine with her parents on a camp on Crystal Lake since she was a child. The early childhood swimming experiences created a foundation for her to become one of the beautiful young ladies who performed synchronized swimming at the Aquatic Center at Jones Beach on Long Island.

Upon graduating from Hofstra University, while living on Long Island, she owned and operated George B. Gardner & Sons Memorials and a sandblasting company which did a lot of work for Grumman Air Craft. She belonged to the Garden City Country club.

In 1975, she moved to Maine to retire an became and active member of her childhood community. She served on several town committees, including the Gray Water District. She volunteered at the Gray Animal Farm, and belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Maine State Parade, First Congregational Church of Gray, and the Hofstra Alumni Association. Charlotte was an avid bridge player, golfer and bowler, and was an Eagle Scout. Charlotte's love and passion was her flowers and gardens.

She is survived by her beloved children, Tim Gardner II and his wife Lisa, of Mission Viejo, CA, and Erva Louise England Linsenmeir Gardner, of Gray; three grandchildren, Britt Marie Gardner, Timothy Ryan Gardner and Jayme Lynn Gardner, and great-grandson Dylan Ryan Gardner, all of Mission Viejo.

Graveside services were held on Friday in Gray Village Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray.

In her memory, memorial donations may be made to Gray Fire-Rescue, 125 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine 04039.

Blanche D. Gardner
2005-01-27

Blanche V. Daley Gardner, 89, of Gardiner, died Thursday Jan 20, at St Andrews Hospital and Health Care Center in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Farmingdale on Sept 5, 1915 she was a daughter of Fearn and Bessie Hatch Daley.

She was a graduate of Gardiner High School class of 1932. During World War II, she was a civil servant at the Brunswick Naval Air Base.

Mrs. Gardner was a very active member of Christ Church in Gardiner. She was a member of St. Annes Altar Guild, Women of Christ Church and adult choir, which she sang with for many years. She had been a delegate for several years to the Maine Episcopal Diocesan Convention. She was a member of the Womens Auxiliary of the Gardiner General Hospital.

She enjoyed spending summers with her husband at Ocean Point, and was an avid reader.

Mrs. Gardner was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Norman B. Gardner on Oct 26, 2004.

Survivors include two children, her son, Peter N. Gardner of Boothbay Harbor; and her daughter, Andrea G. Shirley of Waltham, Mass.; two grandchildren, Peter M. Shirley of Seattle, Washington; and Anne Reilly of Stow, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan 29, at 11am in Christ Christ Episcopal in Gardiner.

Contributions may be made to Christ Church Episcopal, 1 Pleasant Street, Gardiner, ME 04345; or to the Gardiner Library Association, 152 Water St., Gardiner, ME 04345.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue in Gardiner.

Norman B. Gardner
2004-10-28

Norman B. Gardner, 87, of Gardiner and a summer resident of Ocean Point, Boothbay, died Tuesday Oct 26, at the Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

Born in Randolph on Feb 20, 1917, he was a son of Phillip and Sophronia Ricker Gardner.

In 1934 he graduated of Gardiner High School. He began employment at the U.S. Postal Service in 1940. In 1944 he entered the U.S. Navy, and was discharged in 1946. Upon his release from the military he went back to work at the Post Office in Gardiner until 1973 when he was named Post Master of the Winthrop Office. He retired in 1985. For 58 years, he was a licensed public accountant.

Mr. Gardner was a life-long member and Senior Warden Emeritus of Christ Church Episcopal in Gardiner. He was very active in the Episcopal Dioceses of Maine, serving on many committees. He was the recipient of the Scribner Award for Distinguished service for the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. Starting in the early 1950s, he was actively involved in the school system in Gardiner. He was Chairman of the Gardiner School Board and first chairman and founding member of the SAD #11.

Mr. Gardner was a founding member and 2nd president of the Maine State School Board Association. He was a 15-year member of the board of the Gardiner General Hospital, serving two terms as president. He was a board member of the Kennebec Health Planning Council,, Kennebec Valley United Way, member and past chairman of the City of Gardiner's Economic Development Committee, Member of the Gardiner Board of Trade, a member of the Advisory Board of Gardiner Savings Institution, member, past president and past treasurer of the Oak Grove cemetery Association in Gardiner, a trustee and treasurer for six years of the Gardiner Water District, member of the Gardiner Lions Club, member of the Herman Masonic Lodge #32 AF&AM of Gardiner.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Blanche Daley Gardner of Gardiner; his daughter, Andrea Gardner Shirley of Waltham, Mass.; his son, Peter N. Gardner of Boothbay Harbor; two grandchildren, Peter Shirley of Seattle, Wash., and Ann Catherine Reilly of Stowe, Mass.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 30, 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal in Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gardiner Library Association, 152 Water Street Gardiner, ME 04345, or to Christ Church Episcopal in Gardiner.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave. in Gardiner.

Jane H. Gates
2004-04-15

Jane Hooper Gates, 88, recently of Bath, died Sunday, April 11 at home of natural causes surrounded by her family.

Born in Glens Falls, New York on January 31, 1916, she was the youngest of five daughters of Frank C. and Medora H. Hooper of Hooper Mines in North River, New York. She graduated from Vassar College and received her master's in geology from Rochester University in Rochester, New York after completing her field work in New Mexico.

In 1941, she married Olcott Gates and inspired him to become a geologist. She raised six children and moved with her family to Ghana for two years in 1963 while her husband was in the Peace Corps.

She was happiest in wild places and sailing with her family on the coast of Maine, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Mrs. Gates was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset and as a lover of music, she sang in the church choir. She was an advocate for environmental conservation and worked to help establish the recycling program in Wiscasset.

On July 27, 1999, she was predeceased by her husband, Olcott Gates.

Survivors include one son, Frederick L. Gates and his wife Priscilla Sanville of Arlington, Mass.; three daughters, Catharine H. Gates of Bath, Alice H. Gates of Wiscasset and Elizabeth Shaw and her husband Eben of Appleton; five grandchildren, Taylor Moran-Gates, Megan Moran-Gates, Nathaniel H. Gates, Jannetta Shaw and Jebb Shaw.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Adirondack Council, P.O. Box D-2, 103 Hand Avenue, Suite

Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.
