Langdon Gilkey
2004-11-25

University of Chicago theologian Langdon Gilkey, longtime summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, died of meningitis Friday, November 19 in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was 85.

Gilkey, who has been termed by his colleagues as one of the most influential American Christian theologians of the 20th century, was the author of 15 books and hundreds of articles, many of them on science and religion, publishing at length against Christian fundamentalist attacks on science, and against secularist attacks on religious meaning and truth. His latest books included tributes to his two main teachers, Paul Tillich and Reinbold Niebuhr.

He retired from the University of Chicago in 1989, where he had been on staff since 1963 after teaching at Vassar and at Vanderbilt University Divinity School earlier in his career.

A prisoner of war for two and a half years during World War II while he was in China teaching English, he later earned his doctorate at Union Theological Seminary.

A major Protestant interpreter of Catholicism, in his later years, partly influenced by his participation in Christian-Buddhist dialogues and the spiritual reflections of his wife, Sonja Weber Gilkey, he became a leading proponent of inter-religious and pluralist dialogue for Christian theology.

John B. Glude
2004-10-28

John B. Glude, 86, of Annapolis, Maryland, a former lab director of the Maine Sea and Shores Fisheries office in Boothbay Harbor, died October 19 at Ginger Cove Health Center in Annapolis. He also lived in Seattle, Washington for 30 years. He was born August 2, 1918 in Silverdale, Washington. He graduated from Silverdale High School as class salutatorian in 1935 at age 16. He earned a bachelor's degree in fisheries, with a minor in engineering, from the University of Washington in 1939. He received a master's in business administration from the University of Washington.

Mr. Glude's first job was with the Washington Department of Fisheries (WDF) but he left briefly during World War II to serve as a naval architect draftsman at Tacoma Naval Shipyard. After the war, he returned to his position as a fishery biologist at WDF. He was involved with research to determine the effects of polluted waters from pulp mills on oysters. This work formed the basis for regulatory actions and the preservation of the valuable oyster resources in the state of Washington. Mr. Glude was a pioneer in fisheries research, including the seed import oversight from Japan; a director of the National Marine Fisheries Lab in Annapolis; and he implemented the first National Aquaculture Plan. He had published over 100 scientific papers.

In 1948, he was offered a position at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Woods Hole, Mass. The main emphasis at that time was research on the abundance and survival of soft shell clams throughout the entire U.S. east coast. The research project was moved the following year to a former fish hatchery in Boothbay Harbor. During this time, he became lab director of the Boothbay Harbor facility and instituted further research on artificial propagation of clams and other species. The research during those years on the soft shell clam was ground-breaking and is still referred to extensively.

He served as vice president and president of the World Aquaculture Society (also a life member) and was president and life member of the National Shellfisheries Association.

Mr. Glude was an avid sportsman, enjoying fly fishing and duck and game hunting. He also enjoyed kayaking and began wind surfing at the age of 65.

His wife of 50 years, Jean Harrison Glude, died in 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Terry Glude of Atlanta, Georgia and Bill Glude of Juneau, Alaska; a daughter, Nancy Kelly of Annapolis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held October 23 at the Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis. Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Glude's name to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Janet B. Goodhue
2003-05-22

Janet B. Goodhue, after a full life of 91 years, died May 14 at Gorham House in Portland.

Starting out in Westfield, N.J., her life's trip took her to Akron, Ohio, for her four children's youth and on to Wilton, Conn., before returning to the Boothbay area -- the one place that remained a constant throughout her life: summers as a child in Sprucewold, marriage to Ray Goodhue at Ocean Point, summers on Pine Cliff and Cozy Harbor in Southport, and a short retirement before starting a business on Sawyer's Island.

Her interest in community was sincere and lifelong. Her friendships were precious. Her needs were few. Even as she was inquisitive, interested and always learning, her best day would likely have been a morning in her gardens, a hamburger for lunch at Gus's in Cozy Harbor and a sail in a Turnabout on the Sheepscot. For Mrs. Goodhue, it didn't get better than that.

If anyone is so inclined, Mrs. Goodhue always felt the Southport Memorial Library at Newagen was a great community asset and deserved all the support it could get. She would be tickled to think donations in her name were forwarded there.

Her four sons will hold a memorial service on the shores of the Sheepscot later this summer.
