Blanche H. Goodspeed
2004-05-27

Blanche Edith Hodgdon Goodspeed, 76, of Trevett, passed away Sunday, May 23 at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

Born in Boothbay on November 17, 1927, she was a daughter of Delma L. Greenleaf and Richard S. Hodgdon

Mrs. Goodspeed attended Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor schools, graduating in June 1945.

She later attended Shaw Business College in Portland.

Returning to Boothbay she was a secretary for the Boothbay Register under Roy Kelly, and later served as Trevett correspondent for many years.

She was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Cresent Chapter

Garden Club and the Barter's Island Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, painting and sewing.

She is predeceased by her brother, Corlis Hodgdon.

Survivors include husband of 55 years, Robert Goodspeed of Trevett; two daughters, Marsha Gamage of Newagen and Nannette Lee, and husband Bill of Orland, Calif.; one son, Robert Goodspeed Jr. and wife Kim of Georgetown; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley and Richard Hodgdon, both of Trevett; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at the Barters Island Baptist Church, Friday, May 28 at 1 p.m. with a committal service following at the Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Barters Island Baptist Church, Trevett, ME 04571, or to the American Diabetes Foundation, Maine Division, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite 98 R, Portland, ME 04101 or American Heart Association Maine Affiliate, Inc., 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106.

George W. Gould
2005-01-27

George W. Gould, 78, a resident of Boothbay Harbor, finished the last chapter of his life on Saturday, January 22, at St. Andrews Hospital with his wife at his side.

Born January 29, 1926 in Boston, Mass, he was a son of William E. and Cecil Baker Gould, and is a graduate of Boothbay High School, class of 1944.

After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theatre from 1944 to 1946.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk and letter carrier.

Mr. Gould was a charter member of the Lions Club in Boothbay Harbor, member and Past Master of Seaside Lodge #144, and life member of American Legion Post #36 in Boothbay.

He enjoyed reading.

Mr. Gould is predeceased by four brothers and a sister.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Corinne Hale Gould of Boothbay Harbor.

A Masonic funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, at the Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay.

Interment with military honors will be held 10 a.m. Monday, February 7, at the chapel of the new Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd. in Augusta.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the St. Andrews Hospital, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556, or to the charity of ones choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Clark H. Gowen
2003-04-03

Clark Hathaway Gowen, 89, third generation West Newbury farmer, died Wednesday, March 26 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass.

He was the husband of Charlotte Heaton Gowen and the late Rosamond (Ingalls) Gowen.

He and his wife summered in Boothbay for the past 20 years.

Born on the family farm in West Newbury, Massachusetts on January 23, 1914, he was the son of the late Frank L. and Janet H. (Clark) Gowen.

He attended the University of Maine.

Mr. Gowen was a third generation West Newbury farmer with his late father.

From 1956 to 1994 he was a representative for Agway, Inc.; chairman of the Essex County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for 24 years; and was a member of the Essex County Soil Conservation District, all in Massachusetts. He was a former member of the West Newbury Planning Board and West Newbury Congregational Church.

Mr. Gowen enjoyed music and was a longtime supporter of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held Saturday, March 29 West Newbury.

Private Interment will be in Walnut cemetery in West Newbury, In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Essex County Greenbelt Association, 82 Eastern Avenue, Essex, MA 01929 or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac, Massachusetts

Otto E. Graham Jr.
2003-12-25

Otto Everett Graham Jr., 82, Hall of Fame quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, died Wednesday, December 17 at Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital of a dissecting heart aneurysm.

A summer visitor to the Boothbay region for the past several years, Graham, with his son, Duey, and others helped promote and support the local celebrity golf tournament and sports auction for Maine Special Olympics.

Graham set his first record at birth in Evanston, Illinois on December 6, 1921 by weighing 14 pounds, 12 ounces.

Before his sports accomplishments, Graham became a skilled musician as a child as both his parents were teachers.

He was an all-state basketball and football player in high school and at Northwestern University, he was All-American in both sports.

He finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1943 which was won that year by Angelo Bertelli of Notre Dame. He also played baseball at NU.

During World War II, Graham was enrolled in the Navy's V-5 carrier program.

Drafted by the National Football League's Detroit Lions, Graham instead signed with the Cleveland Browns of the American Football Conference.

While waiting for football to begin, Graham played professional basketball with the Rochester Royals, which won the NBA championship in 1946.

He joined the Browns in 1946 and guided them to the title game each season from 1946-1955, amassing an astounding 105-17-4 regular season record.

"He was most proud of never missing a game as a pro," said his son, Duey.

Graham passed for 23,584 yards and 174 touchdowns and led the Browns to seven championships -- four in the AAFC and three NFL titles.

He was MVP of the AAFC three times.

After his retirement in 1955, he became athletic director and football coach at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

He left the Coast Guard in 1966 to become general manager and coach of the Washington Redskins (1966-68).

Graham, who also made history as the first player to wear a face mask, was enshrined into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

In 1994, he was selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary all-time team and represented his peers by tossing the game coin at Super Bowl XXIX.

A moment of silence and a video scoreboard tribute to Graham was held at this past Sunday's football game at Cleveland Browns Stadium between the Browns and the Baltimore Ravens.

In attendance was Graham's only surviving brother, Richard, his family members and other family and friends.

The Browns will wear Graham's retired number 14 on the back left of their helmets for the remainder of the 2003 season.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beverly; two sons, Duey of Waldoboro (formerly of Boothbay) and David of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Sandy, of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, Richard, of Naples, Fla.; two foster daughters; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held Christmas Day.

A public service will be held Saturday, December 27 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Palms in Sarasota, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Otto Graham Alzheimer's Research Fund.

Marlene Grant
2004-07-22

Marlene Grant, 70, of Trevett, passed away Monday, July 19 at Maine Medical Center.

Born on December 12, 1933 in Boothbay Harbor, she was a daughter of Angus and Mildred Pierce Andrews.

She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and graduated from Booth-bay Harbor High School.

She worked at St. Andrews Hospital for many years as a housekeeper, then as a CNA and a private nurse, retiring from St. Andrews.

Mrs. Grant was an avid Beano player and loved her flower gardens. Watching birds was one of her favorite pastimes.

She loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She always enjoyed and looked forward to the annual family trips to Funtown USA.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Kenneth S. Grant Sr. of Barters Island; sons, Kenneth Grant, Jr. and wife, Margaret of Wiscasset, Richard Grant, and wife Sharon, of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Londa Grant and friend, Duane Dunbar of Boothbay Harbor; one sister, Nancy Campbell of Boothbay Harbor; grandchildren, Shanna Davis of South Portland, Kathleen Dykhuis of Fernadina Beach, Fla., Amy Grant of East Boothbay, Cory Hyson of Boothbay Harbor, and Kristy Hyson of West Boothbay Harbor; great-grandchildren, Sia Jade Hyson of Boothbay Harbor and Amber Hyson of West Boothbay Harbor.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 23 at the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Grant's name to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, 18 Corey Lane, Boothbay, ME 04538

Flavilla L. Gray
2004-04-01

Flavilla L. Gray, 82, of Edgecomb, died Thursday, March 25 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born June 20, 1921 in Red Beach, Maine, she was the daughter of Everett, a lighthouse keeper, and Corice Quinn.

Flavilla grew up on Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse and many other lighthouses on the coast of Maine.

She moved to the mainland to go to school and graduated from Calais High School.

While her family lived at the Cuckolds Lighthouse she went to Gray's Homestead to work and met Roger Gray.

They married on February 10, 1942, and moved to Edgecomb where they had lived since.

For 32 years, Mrs. Gray worked as a C.N.A. and in Central Supply (where all sterilization was done for the operating room) at St. Andrews Hospital.

Later she worked at Flagship Motor Inn until she retired in 1994.

She attended and was baptized in the Edgecomb Baptist Church. She enjoyed knitting, spending time with her family and talking about her pride and joy, "Pogo," her loving cat.

Mrs. Gray had a published poem about lighthouses and biography written in "Coastal Ghost and Lighthouse Lore."

She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Gray, who died in 1980.

Survivors included her son, Richard Gray Sr. and his wife Kathryn of Edgecomb; grandsons, Richard Gray, Jr. and his wife Kim, and Charles Gray, all of Edgecomb; step-great- grandsons, Jason and Christopher Dighton, both of Alna.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April at the Union cemetery in Edgecomb.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Hospital, P.O. Box 181, Memphis, TN 38101; American Cancer Society, ME Division, 1 Main St. Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086; or American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., So. Portland, ME 04106.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
