Charles T. Haskell
1998-08-27

Charles T. Haskell, 55, of Harpswell, formerly of Edgecomb, who received national recognition for recreating historic expeditions to Brazil and the Amazon, died Tuesday, August 18 at a North Carolina hospital after an extended illness with cancer.

A son of Antoinette M. and Robert H. Haskell Jr., he was the retired publisher of the Mount Sterling Advocate newspaper and retired president of Hasco Newspapers, both based in Kentucky. He also was a former vice president of the Martinsville (Va.) Bulletin, Inc.

After retiring in 1989, he became active in conservation and headed the non-profit New Century Conservation Trust, Inc., based in Boothbay Harbor and Edgecomb. He was chairman of the endowment board of the National Wildlife Federation and was named to its 50th anniversary Conservation Hall of Fame Banquet Committee, which raised $250,000 to build the Conservation Hall of Fame Conference Center near the White House in 1986.

His interest in the environment led Mr. Haskell in 1992 to recreate the 1914 expedition down the Rio Roosevelt River in western Brazil. It had not been fully navigated since 1926 and before that, only once by the 1914 expedition that included former President Theodore Roosevelt.

Roosevelt's Through the Brazilian Wilderness inspired Mr. Haskell and Elizabeth McKnight, the expedition co-leader who later became his wife. They planned to navigate the 950-mile Rio Roosevelt and compare their findings with the 1914 expedition's.

In 1993, he took a second expedition through Africa, retracing Dr. David Livingstone's last journey. The team, accompanied by Livingstone's great-grandson, Dr. David Livingstone Wilson, journeyed in Jeeps from Zanzibar through Tanzania to Burundi to Zambia on the route Henry M. Stanley took in 1871. Livingstone's writings provided environmental documentation which the New Century Conservation Trust team compared to the environment today.

After both trips, Mr. Haskell became a frequent speaker on the rain forest, the hardships and the lessons of the Amazon, the need for conservation and applying the lessons of history to the modern world.

In 1992, Mr. Haskell's contributions were honored with the Theodore Roosevelt Association's distinguished service award, which previously had been given to Charles Lindbergh, Dwight Eisenhower and Chuck Yeager.

Mr. Haskell attended the University of Massachusetts.

Surviving, besides his mother of Martinsville, are his wife, Elizabeth M. Haskell; a son, Charles T. Haskell Jr. of Annapolis, Md.; three daughters, Jennifer and Erin Haskell, both of Denver, and Kari Haskell of New York City; and a brother, Robert H. Haskell III of Martinsville.

A memorial service was held Friday, August 21 in Christ Episcopal Church, 311 East Church Street, Martinsville. The Rev. Ed Covert officiated. Arrangements were by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.
