Frances A. Haskell
1999-01-14

Frances A. Haskell, 89, of Boothbay Harbor, died Tuesday, January 12 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born February 5, 1909 in Columbia Falls, she was the daughter of Merle and Lois Nash Dyer. She grew up in Steuben and attended local schools.

Mrs. Haskell married Walter Workman and had two children with him. He died and she later married Horace Haskell from Steuben.

She ran a grocery store in Steuben and later worked in the fish factory in Prospect Harbor. She also did housework for people and was a homemaker. She was a member of Circle Three of the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, Bridge Biddies at the Boothbay Region YMCA, Monday Club, Senior Citizens, Coastal Club, 63 Card group and the Sidewalk Society in Steuben. She loved to play cards and knit.

Mrs. Haskell was predeceased by her husband Horace P. Haskell who died in 1986, and by her daughter, Madeline Theo Brown who died in 1993.

Survivors include one daughter, Audrey and her husband Sherwood Leighton of Boothbay Harbor; son-in-law, Sherman Brown of Boothbay; one sister, Harriet and her husband Richard Currie of Norton, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Sheila Stover of Boothbay Harbor, Paula Leighton of Boothbay Harbor, and James and his wife Sandra Lowe of Boothbay; six great-grandchildren; six great- great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, January 14 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 15 at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at the Steuben Cemetery, Steuben.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Route 27, Boothbay.

Robert T. Haslam
1998-10-15

Robert T. Haslam, 81, of Sun City Hilton Head, South Carolina, died Monday, October 5 at his residence.

Born on July 31, 1917, in Cleveland, he was the son of the late Robert T. and Ethel Cronin Haslam Sr. He lived in Boothbay Harbor for 18 years just prior to moving to South Carolina in 1996.

Mr. Haslam was a graduate of Pingry School in New Jersey and Dartmouth College and attended MIT's Sloan School of Management. He was a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy during World War II having served in the Pacific.

He worked for 39 years for Esso Standard Oil Company and Exxon Company U.S.A. He was chairman and Oilman of the Year of the Maine Petroleum Association; deacon of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, chairman of the planning board and member of the comprehensive planning committee of Boothbay Harbor; president of the Boothbay Region Performing Arts Council and member of the Boothbay Region Garden Club; president of the Exxon Downeasters; president, Millburn Fourth of July Committee, Millburn, New Jersey; and member of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton, South Carolina.

Mr. Haslam was known for his humor and wit and often served as emcee for functions including the Miss Windjammer Pageant.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Janeth Player Haslam; two sons, Robert T. Haslam III of Palo Alto, Calif., and Douglas A. Haslam of San Carlos, Calif.; two daughters, Judith C. H. Butcher of Mill Valley, Calif., and Sheila S. Williams of Lakeville, Penn.; six grandchildren, Chante, Spencer, Laurel, Julia, Jeffrey and Anne; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Sonya.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor with the Rev. Peter Panagore officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor or the Hospice Care of the Low Country, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Carolyn A. Hatch
1998-10-15

Carolyn "Kelly" A. Hatch, 52, Jefferson, died unexpectedly Thurs., Oct. 8 while camping with her family in Greenville.

She was born in Gardiner, a daughter of Thurlow and Louise Johnson Crummett, Sr., and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1964.

She married Roger A. Hatch on Sept. 16, 1967. For ten years she lived in Damariscotta Mills, then moved briefly to Union, and lived for the past ten years at the family home in Jefferson.

In January 1984, Mrs. Hatch began working at the Lincoln County News, where she was known for her willingness to help in any way, including putting the paper together, delivering it and answering the telephone.

"My mother loved that paper," said Mrs. Hatch's oldest daughter, Katrina Guptill of Jefferson. "She lived and breathed that paper."

She said her mother had a "strong work ethic and believed in company loyalty." All the children worked at the paper at some point when they were growing up, helping stuff inserts on Wednesday nights when the paper was printed.

Mrs. Hatch also loved knitting, painting, cross-stitching and camping. Although she had seem numerous moose on trips to Northern Maine, on Tues., Oct. 7, she saw the largest live bull moose she had ever seen.

Her daughter said Mrs. Hatch "knew everyone and everyone knew my mother, and if she didn't know you, she got to know you in five minutes. My mother was not shy."

Even the funeral director, who seems to know everyone in town, admitted Mrs. Hatch knew more people than he did, she said.

Surviving are her husband of Jefferson; her mother of Pittston; two daughters, Katrina Guptill of Jefferson and Penelope Peaslee of Somerville; a son, Richard of Jefferson; a brother, Thurlow Crummett, Jr. of Louisiana; a sister, Lina LeClair of Pittston; and three grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta, where a celebration of her life was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. John Ineson officiating. Burial followed in Trask Cemetery, Jefferson.

Ruth V. Hathaway
1998-05-07

Ruth Varney Hathaway died at Havenwood Retirement Community, Concord, New Hampshire on April 23.

The widow of Commander Donald D. Hathaway (USN Ret.) is survived by daughters Alice Brown and Nancy Bancroft; grandchildren Elizabeth Brown, Ruth B. Whitmore, and Philip Bancroft Jr.; and great-grandchild, Ashley Whitmore.

She was a former resident of Glens Falls, New York; Lexington, Mass.; Boothbay Harbor; and Concord, New Hampshire.

A private memorial is planned.

Richard C. Hawkes
1999-01-28

WAKEFIELD, MA - Richard C. Hawkes of Oxford, formerly of Wakefield, MA, died Sunday, January 24, at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

He was 71 years old. born in Melrose, MA, he was the son of the late Roland D. and Ethel (Carter) Hawkes.

Mr. Hawkes was educated in the Wakefield Public Schools and was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the Army and the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the Wakefield Lodge of Elks. He retired after 35 years from Wakefield Ready Mix Concrete in 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Florence E. (Woodbury) Hawkes; his son, Alan Hawkes of Woburn, MA and his daughters, Virginia Alleca of Wakefield, MA and Lisa Pappas of Oxford. He was the brother of Ronald Hawkes of Wakefield and Carol Quinn of Peabody, MA. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Christopher Hawkes, Jill Nadeau and Kenneth Alleca and two great grandchildren, Sean and Cory Nadeau.

A funeral service was held at the McDonald Funeral Home in Wakefield. Interment will be in Forest Glade cemetery in Wakefield.

Dr. Merrill Hayes
1998-10-01

Dr. Merrill B. Hayes, 90, a resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis, Maryland since December 1997, died of heart failure September 23 at Ginger Cove Health Center. He was the son of James Arthur Hayes and Annie Merrill Hayes.

Born in Bala, Penn., Dr. Hayes attended Chester High School, Chester, Penn., and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1930 and Temple University Medical School in 1934. He received a Masters Degree (ORL) from Temple University Medical School in 1939 and was certified in his specialty of Otolaryngology in 1940.

In 1941, he married Margaret Lansing Fox in Annapolis, Md. From 1941 - 1946, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as chief of ENT services at the station hospital at Ft. Belvoir and Ft. Meade General Hospital.

Upon discharge, he practiced in Chester, Penn. and resided in Swarthmore, Penn. until his retirement in 1974. After a cruise around the world, he retired to his tidewater farm outside Cambridge, Md.

He spent nearly every summer in Sprucewold, Boothbay Harbor, where he was a longstanding member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.

Dr. Hayes served as president of the Delaware County Medical Society, the Delaware County Cancer Society, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, was a member of the AMA and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and was the first president of the Medical Staff of Riddle Memorial Hospital, Media, Penn.

In addition to his spouse, Dr. Hayes is survived by his children, Barbara Hayes Gray of Brunswick, and James A. Hayes of Annapolis; his grandsons, Blair M. Gray of Arlington, Va. and Colin M. Gray of Portland, Oregon; and his greatgrandson, Caleb M. Gray.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on October 31 at St. John's Chapel, Rt. 343, Cambridge, Md. His family will hold a graveside service at a later date in Randolph, Maine.

W. Eddy Hazard
1998-12-10

HEBRON - W. Eddy Hazard, 68, of Hebron died, Friday, December 4, 1998, at his residence.

He was born in Bridgewater, MA, on February 14, 1930, the son of Wendell S. and Ingetorg Anderson Hazard. He graduated from East Bridgewater High School in 1947.

He owned and operated his own construction and trucking business in the Hebron area.

He served as road commissioner for the town of Hebron for eight years. He was instrumental in organizing the Hebron Fire Department. He lived in the Hebron area most of his life.

Mr. Hazard was a United States Army Veteran.

He married the former Betty Ann Collins on December 2, 1950.

He is survived by his wife, of Hebron; a son, Rodney Hazard of Hebron; two sisters, Pricilla Churchill of South Paris and Elsi Pierce of Taunton, MA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday December 7 at the Hebron Community Baptist Church in Hebron. Services were conducted by Rev. Anita White.

Interment was in the Bryant cemetery in Hebron. Bearers were Skip Churchill, Brad Holyoke, Norm Letourneau, Corey Letourneau, Basil Bryant and Dennis Lejoie.

Donations in Mr. Hazard's memory may be sent to the American Heart Association, Box 346, Augusta ME 04330.

Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris was in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor F. Heath
1998-10-15

WEST PARIS - Eleanor F. Heath, 83, died Friday, October 9. 1998 at the Ledgeview Nursing Home, West Paris. She had resided on Greenwood Street in West Paris and had lived in the area for many years,

She was born in Wales, Maine on Feb. 4, 1915, the daughter of Robert and Bertlia (Beckler) Jones. She graduated from Monmouth Academy and Farmington Normal School with her degree in Education. Mrs Heath taught school as an Elementary School teacher in Wales, South Paris, Norway, and Lisbon Falls until her retirement.

She was a member of the Deering Memorial Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Society and had served as Treasurer of the Church. She was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association,

She was married in Wales on Sept. 29, 1946 to Stanley P. Heath who survives, of West Paris. Other survivors include two brothers, Carrel Jones of Wales and Stanley Jones of Monmouth; three nieces, Nina Jones of Auburn, Lisa Smith of Leeds and Sonia Godbout of Litchfield.

The funeral was at 1 p.m. Monday at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Norway with Rev. Betsy Webber, Pastor of the Deering Memorial Methodist Church of South Paris, officiating.

Music selections were The Old Rugged Cross and The Lord's Prayer.

Committal services were conducted by Rev. Betsy Webber; Interment was in the Wayside Cemetery, West Paris.

Paul bearers were: Erwin Heath, Wayne Lawrence, Mert Farrington, Kevin Dillingham, Donald Farrington and Ronald Dillingham.Those who desire may contribute to the Deering Memorial Methodist Church, Main Street, South Paris, ME 04281, in her memory.

Mrs. Carolyn N. Heino
1998-09-03

SOUTH PARIS - Carolyn N. Heino, 68, of East Stoneham died Friday evening at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Waterford, October 7, 1929, the daughter of Stanwood and Maude Learned Nelson. She attended Waterford schools and Bridgton Academy. She worked 10 years as a CNA at Arnold House in Wakefield, MA. She also did housekeeping for people in the Lovell area.

She married Walter V. Heino on July 12, 1949. He died January 24, 1997. Together they made their home in Melrose, MA, for 30 years before returning to East Stoneham. Mrs. Heino was a member of the Daughters of Union Veterans and a former member of the North Waterford Grange.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Eleanor Nelson, Sr. of East Stoneham; a sister and brother-in-law, Geneva and Robert Tripp of East Stoneham, eight nieces and nephews, Albert Nelson, Jr., Dale Nelson, Cheryl Barnard, Sharon Traish, Carol Davis, Craig, Gary and Edward Millett and several grand nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, September 1 at 2 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery, East Stoneham. Arrangements were by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home in South Paris.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to Stoneham Rescue, East Stoneham, Maine.
