Jeannette C. Hill
1999-02-18

NORWAY - Jeannette C. Hill, 78, of Oxford died Friday, February 12, 1999 at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.

She was born in North Fryeburg on August 27, 1920, the daughter of Albert and Martha Emery Adams. She attended schools in West Stoneham.

She married Roscoe Hill on October 22, 1938. He predeceased her on December 24, 1993.

Mrs. Hill was a housewife and mother who took great care of her family for many years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Lovell.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Alberta and Glenn Starbird of New York and Mabel and Jim Morrison of Oxford; sister, Elizabeth Wakefield of Harrison;nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

There will be a spring graveside service scheduled at a later date in the Hillside cemetery at E. Stoneham with Rev. Melvin Young officiating.

Arrangements under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Gladys A. Hiller
1999-03-11

Gladys A. Hiller died Sunday, March 7 at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland, where she had been in residence for several weeks. She had celebrated a happy 101st birthday with friends and her daughter, Barbara Leonard, on January 29, 1999.

Born in Hopedale, Massachusetts in 1898, she attended schools in Massachusetts and married Charles A. Whitten immediately following his return from Army service in Europe during World War I. Following his death in 1939, she undertook a series of management courses which led to her accepting a position at the Norwood Hospital from which she retired in 1970.

She married her second husband, Hadwen A. Hiller in 1974 and lived in Manchester, New Hampshire. After his death in 1976 she lived briefly in Amesbury, Massachusetts before moving to Boothbay Harbor in 1986 and living at the home on Spruce Point of her only daughter, Mrs. Barbara Leonard, who survives her.

Burial will be in Ashland, Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 20 at 1 p.m. in the Spruce Point Chapel at the Boothbay Railway Museum. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Columba's Episcopal Church.

Mr. John S. Hines
1999-07-08

LEWISTON - John S. Hines, 58 of Jordan Road, Mechanic Falls died Saturday,July 3,1999 at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, April 2,1941, the son of Stanwood and Margaret Heald Hines.

He graduated from Abington,MA High School, the University of Massachusetts. He received his masters from University of Maine,Orono and his doctorate from Bowling Green. He was an English professor at the University of Maine Augusta and Central Maine Technical College. John had been a member of Poland Rescue, was a big brother and enjoyed riding his Harley.

On July 5,1969 he married Diane Petersen.

Survivors include his wife of Mechanic Falls; two daughters, Erin of Athens,Ohio and Damian of Auburn and a sister, Sally Hines of San Mateo,CA.

The family invites friends to visit at their home at 187 Jordan Road,Mechanic Falls on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4pm with a time of remembrance at 3p.m.

In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to the Lewiston-Auburn Humane Society or Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, P.O. Box 808, Hudson, MA 01479.Arrangements are by Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 West Dwinal Street, Mechanic Falls.

Christina M. Hirning
1998-07-31

Christina M. Hirning, age 79, of Rustic Road, Gray, died Tuesday at a Windham health care facility after a long illness. born in Portland, she was a daughter of Albert A. and Mary Bonvie Doiron. She was a 1938 graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Portland (now Catherine McCauley High School).

During World War II, Mrs. Hirning worked at Fort Williams. She had also worked for Owen Moore in Portland, GMC Trucks in South Portland and MacDonald-Paige in Portland. She retired in 1985. Mrs. Hirning enjoyed gardening, auctions, music and dancing, but her greatest pastime was her family.

Her husband Frederick E. Hirning, Sr., died in 1997 and a son, David M. Gerardo died in 1992. Surviving her are 3 sons: Peter T. Gerardo of Gray; John E. Gerardo of Standish and Joseph R. Gerardo of New Gloucester; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter.

The family suggests contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.

George W. Holbrook
1999-02-04

WEST PARIS - George W. Holbrook, 83, died Friday, January 29, at the Ledgeview Nursing Home, West Paris.

Mr. Holbrook lived in Mexico for many years, but had recently resided with his daughter, Mrs. Queda Billings of Milton Plantation.

He was born in Braintree, MA on September 13, 1915, the son of Percy and Anna (Parker) Holbrook and had attended schools in Massachusetts.

During World War II he served as an Army PFC with Company G, 45th Division, 157th Infantry Regiment from June 8, 1942 to October 26, 1945 and was overseas in the Sicilian Campaign, the Rome-Arno Campaign and the Naples-Foggia Campaign. He was reported missing in action and taken prisoner of war of Germany near Carroceta, Italy, but escaped from prison on April 23, 1945. Mr. Holbrook received the Bronze Service Star, a Bronze Arrowhead and the Purple Heart.

For several years he had worked for the U.S. Postal Service in MA, and when he moved to Maine he worked at the Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford for over 30 years until retirement in 1978 as a heister operator.

He was formerly a very active member of the Mexico First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and as a choir member for many years, and in recent years had attended the Bryant Pond Baptist Church. He was a member of the Boise Cascade Paper Company 26.

He was married in Mexico on December 1, 1945 to the former Elizabeth J. Powell who survives of West Paris.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Laura Cote of Livermore, and Mrs. Scott (Queda) Billings of Milton Plantation; five grandchildren, Scott Billings of Milton Plantation, Dane DeConzo of Auburn, Melissa Billings of Nashua, NH, Aaron Billings of Dixfield and Eric Cote of Roxbury; five great-grandchildren, Scott Jr and Joshua Billings of Milton Plantation, Dylan and Taylor DeConzo of Auburn and Kyle Cote of Roxbury.

Funeral services were held on Monday at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford. Interment will be in the spring at Farrington-Morton cemetery in Mexico.

Those who desire, may contributions to the American Heart Association of Maine, P.O. Box 3256, Augusta, ME 04330-0346 in his memory.

Ronald Ernest Holden Jr.
1998-08-20

SOUTH PARIS - Ronald Ernest Holden Jr., 38, of Bridgton died Wednesday August 12, 1998, at South Paris as a result of injury's sustained in an auto accident. He was born in Lewiston on November 19, 1959, the son of Ronald E. and Barbara M. Durgin Holden. He was educated at Oxford Hills and Bridgton Academy.

He was a self employed miner working at the Bennett Quarry in West Paris.

He is survived by his parents of North Bridgton; three brothers, Dennis and Stephen both of Otisfield, and Eric of Madison, NH; nieces and nephews and his fiancee Pierrefte Inzerillo.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 15 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway. Interment was in the North Bridgton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the North Bridgton cemetery Assoc., c/o Martha Flint, Portland St., Bridgton, ME 04009.

Ethel R. Honey
1998-07-16

Ethel Rose (Leach) Honey, 95, formerly of Bangor and East Holden, died Wednesday, July 8 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born March 12, 1903 in Penobscot, she was the daughter of Norris and Rose Gray Leach. She grew up in Penobscot, and graduated from Castine Normal School to become a certified teacher.

Mrs. Honey taught for a time before getting married. In the late 1950's she worked on the switchboard at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She also worked at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor in Medical Records.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, Coastal Club, 49er's, and Senior Citizens Club. She was an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earle J. Honey, who died in 1957.

Survivors include two sons, Earle Jr. and his wife Marie of Hartland and Kenneth A. and his wife Laura of Boothbay; seven grandchildren: Michael and his wife Peggy Honey of Ellsworth, Mark Honey of Ellsworth, Deborah and her husband Ira Carmichael of St. Albans, Amy Honey of Hartland, Jennifer and her husband Steven Grady of Whitefield, Jayne and her husband John Sullivan of Troy, and Scott A. Honey of Portland; and six great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at the Harts Corner cemetery in East Holden.

Donations may be made to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, Oak Street, Boothbay Harbor 04538. Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor.

Lisa C. Houston
1998-10-08

Lisa Cockburn Houston, age 85, Bristol, died Sept. 30, at her residence.

She was born in Manchester, England on June 13, 1913, the daughter of Brig. Gen. Thomas Cockburn and Florence E. (Tisserman) Fairborn. She graduated from British Schools and volunteers and was accepted to the Females Army Nursing Yeomanary during WWII with a rank of Captain for the British Government. On Aug. 10, 1946, she married Frederic P. Houston and the resided in New York City. Mrs. Houston volunteered with; The Visiting Nurse Service in New York and did flower arrangements for St. James Episcopal Church and for the New York Botanical Garden, both in New York City. She was editor and chief of the Herbalists, an annual Magazine. Mrs. Houston and her husband moved to Bristol, in 1990.

She was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset, St. James Episcopal Church in New York City, the Colony Club in New York City and the New York Botanical Garden.

Mrs. Houston enjoyed flowers and raising whippets and dachshunds.

She is survived by her husband Frederic P. Houston of 52 years, of Bristol; one son, Douglas C. Houston and his wife Heather G. of Brooklyn, NY; one daughter, Jane C. McCready and her husband Richard F. of Lexington, Ky.; two granddaughters, Sarah H. McCready and Louise F. McCready.

A funeral served was held Oct. 3 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset. Burial will be in Stansted Mount Fitchet, England. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Wiscasset.

Altena P. Howard
1999-03-11

Altena P. Howard, 94, Boothbay Harbor, died March 8 at St. Andrews Hospital, Boothbay Harbor.

She was born Feb. 18, 1905 in Boothbay Harbor, the daughter of Newbert and Eva Brewer Pierce. She attended local schools, graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School.

Mrs. Howard was a homemaker, enjoying her home life and family, and always had beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed dancing with her husband in earlier years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Emery W. Howard, who died May 27, 1962.

She is survived by three daughters, Betty Hart of Pemaquid, Linda Estey of California, and Jeannette Papallo of Virginia; two sons, Emery Howard Jr. of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Eugene "Jeep" Howard of Brunswick; and grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces.

A graveside service will be held at Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay in the spring. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service or to St. Andrews Home Health.

Pauline Ainsworth Howard
1998-10-15

BRIDGTON - Pauline Ainsworth Howard, 81, of Harrison, died Monday, October 12, 1998 at the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Bridgton. A resident of the area since 1964, she lived on the Maple Ridge Road in Harrison and was formerly of East Peru.

Born June 6, 1917 in Hebron, she was the daughter of John Joseph and Lena Estele (Conant) McGee and graduated from Edward Little High School with the class of 1937. She was a former member of the Peru Center Grange, and she loved to cook and crochet.

Having just celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary, she was married in Lewiston, on June 6, 1938 to Archer P. Howard of Harrison, who survives

Other survivors include a daughter, Ann F. Howard of Harrison; two sons, Philip 0. Howard of Harrison and George R. Howard and his wife, Nancy M., of Westbrook; three grandchildren, George R. Howard, II and Amy M. Howard of Westbrook and Sarah N. Howard and her husband, Mathew Strout, of Bridgton and a brother, Roger McGee of Gorham. She was predeceased by a sister, Verna Thurlow of Bridgton.

At her request, there are no public calling hours, but friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 15 at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 33 Fair Street, Norway, with Mr. Ben Conant officiating. Interment will be in the East Peru Cemetery, Peru. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Harrison Food Pantry, care of Ruby McLaren, 8 Thumper Lane, Harrison, ME, 04040 in memory of Mrs. Howard.
