Leo A. Hartwell
1999-11-12

Leo A. Hartwell, 78, died last Sunday.

He was born in Gardner, Mass., a son of Martin and Clema Hartwell, and graduated from Chelmsford (MA) High School in 1939.

Mr. Hartwell served in the 30th Infantry Division in World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was at the Battle of the Bulge, and received a Purple Heart.

He was self-employed for 24 years and owned a variety store in Benedicta and one in Gray. He also worked at Cook's Hardware Store in Gray, and had recently begun working at Thompson's Orchard in New Gloucester.

Mr. Hartwell was a member of the American Legion post in Gray, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Order of Purple Hearts. During the 1960s, he was active in the Gray Youth Club.

His hobbies included gardening, travel and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lucille Desmond Hartwell of Gray; one son, Larry Hartwell, of Scarborough; one daughter, Mrs. Brian (Lynn) Thompson, of New Gloucester; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine.

Mary B. Harward
1999-10-14

Mary Booth Harward, 89, daughter of Frederic Thatcher and Edith Booth Harward, died Monday, October 11 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. born in Highland Park, Michigan, she attended local schools in the area and finished at Taunton, Mass. and at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. She received degrees from Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan.

Mrs. Harward spent many years summering on Capitol Island before making her home on Southport Island.

She was predeceased by a brother, Thatcher Harward of Boothbay, and by a sister, Anne H. Mercer of Franklin Hills, Michigan. Survivors include two nieces, Maryanne H. Keeger and family of California, and Mary L. Likins and family of Michigan.

There will be no services but any tokens in her memory will be appreciated by Lincoln County Animal Shelter, St. Andrews Hospital, or Boothbay Region Ambulance Service.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Robert T. Haslam
1998-10-15

Robert T. Haslam, 81, of Sun City Hilton Head, South Carolina, died Monday, October 5 at his residence.

Born on July 31, 1917, in Cleveland, he was the son of the late Robert T. and Ethel Cronin Haslam Sr. He lived in Boothbay Harbor for 18 years just prior to moving to South Carolina in 1996.

Mr. Haslam was a graduate of Pingry School in New Jersey and Dartmouth College and attended MIT's Sloan School of Management. He was a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy during World War II having served in the Pacific.

He worked for 39 years for Esso Standard Oil Company and Exxon Company U.S.A. He was chairman and Oilman of the Year of the Maine Petroleum Association; deacon of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, chairman of the planning board and member of the comprehensive planning committee of Boothbay Harbor; president of the Boothbay Region Performing Arts Council and member of the Boothbay Region Garden Club; president of the Exxon Downeasters; president, Millburn Fourth of July Committee, Millburn, New Jersey; and member of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton, South Carolina.

Mr. Haslam was known for his humor and wit and often served as emcee for functions including the Miss Windjammer Pageant.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Janeth Player Haslam; two sons, Robert T. Haslam III of Palo Alto, Calif., and Douglas A. Haslam of San Carlos, Calif.; two daughters, Judith C. H. Butcher of Mill Valley, Calif., and Sheila S. Williams of Lakeville, Penn.; six grandchildren, Chante, Spencer, Laurel, Julia, Jeffrey and Anne; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Sonya.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor with the Rev. Peter Panagore officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor or the Hospice Care of the Low Country, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Mrs. Eloise Haywood Heath

SOUTH PARIS - Eloise Haywood Heath, known as Tommy, died Sunday morning, January 2, 2000 at the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris. At an early age she was given the name Tommy by an uncle, who felt the family needed to have a boy. The name stuck and became her life-long nickname.

Mrs. Heath was born on March 5, 1905, the daughter of Harry Haywood and Kittie Idella Treat of Wallingford, CT.

She attended Wallingford public schools, graduated from Vassar College in 1926, and received her Ph.D. in Public Health from Yale University in 1930. She became Chief Chemist at the New Haven, CT Water Company in 1933. In 1940, she was the only woman serving as chief chemist of a water supply system in the United States. Later, she joined the staff of the Connecticut Tuberculosis Association.

On August 14, 1937, at her parents' home in Wallingford, she married Edward Phillips Heath, called Phil.

In World War I, Mr. Heath had trained aviators for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, later worked in the oil fields in Texas and Trinidad, and became an insurance broker in New Haven.

The Heaths then moved to the first of a series of small towns in Connecticut where Mr. Heath managed a dairy farm of 100 head of Ayrshire cattle and, after the end of World War II, became an instructor in diary farm management for the adult education division of the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.

The Heaths retired to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1972.

After the death of her husband in 1988, Mrs. Heath moved to a retirement center in Burlington, NC. In 1997, her nephew, Robert Dann, and his his wife, Jane, of Harrison, brought her to the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris, where she could be near them and receive better care. At the Maine Veterans' Home she received loving and supportive care that made her, as she said, very contented.

Mrs. Heath did not have any children. She is survived by two nephews, Robert Treat Dann of Harrison and Alan Osborn Dann of Marlboro, VT.

Services and Interment will take place in Wallingford, CT at a later date.

Bertrand A. Hebert
1999-02-11

Bertrand ``Bert" Armand Hebert, 79, died January 30 at Keysville (Georgia) Nursing and Convalescent Home after a long battle with emphysema and cancer.

Born February 1, 1919 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, he was the eldest son of Albert Valere Hebert and Marie Lange Drouin. He was a graduate of Woonsocket High School and spent summers with his family on Hog Island in Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island.

In 1938 he attended National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois on a scholarship. After graduation he taught anatomy at the college.

Mr. Hebert was in the U.S. Army during World War II directing entertainment for hospital ship patients. Upon his return from the war he passed the Illinois State Medical Boards and was licensed to practice chiropractic which he did for several years in the Chicagoland area.

In the late 1950s and into the 1980s, Mr. Hebert worked in the insurance industry rising to regional supervisor, specializing in Workers Compensation. In the 1980s Mr. Hebert became an independent investigator and consultant. Upon retiring from the insurance industry, Mr. Hebert obtained a position as a Deputy Sheriff in Lake County, Illinois.

Mr. Hebert loved the water and was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Wilmette, Illinois where he attained the distinction of Coast Guard Coxswain. He also taught navigation and other skills for the Coast Guard.

Mr. Hebert was a talented artist, fluent in French, an accomplished carpenter and enjoyed gardening at his long-time home in Northbrook, Illinois. He was active in his neighborhood homeowners association and was president of the organization for three terms.

Survivors include three sons, Denis B. Hebert of Wiscasset, Armand V. Hebert of Northbrook, Illinois, and Kevin A Hebert of Scots Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Lucy Nault of Blackstone, Mass., and Midge Boudreau of Slatersville, R.I.; one brother, Jim Hebert of Charlestown, R.I.; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hebert was predeceased by his brothers Edmond Hebert of Prudence, R.I., and Luke Hebert of Hephzibah, Ga.

At Mr. Hebert's request there will be no funeral or memorial service. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Irving T. Tom Hemingway
2000-01-06

TYLER, TX - Irving T. Tom Hemingway, 87, died Saturday, January 1, at the Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, TX.

For the past year he made his home in Tyler, TX and was formerly of Milton Plantation and West Paris.

He was born in Milton Township (Milton Plantation) on April 2, 1912, the son of Cleve and Bertha (Abbott) Hemingway and attended schools in Norway.

He was employed as a roll stripper in the North Star Paper Machine at Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford until retirement in 1975, after more than 23 years with the company. He was a member of the Bryant Pond Baptist Church.

He was married in South Paris on January 23, 1937, to Mary Swearingen, who died in Norway on May 30, 1987.

Survivors include six sons and their wives, Gene and Judy Hemingway of North Waterford, Thomas and Debbie Hemingway of Rumford, Patrick and Maryetta Hemingway of Tyler, TX, Terry Hemingway of Springfield, VA, David and Barbara Hemingway of Lewiston, and James and Chong Hemingway, USAF of Honolulu, Hawaii; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Jones of Hudson and Mrs. Roland (Shirley) Durgin of Bolsters Mills; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Frances Swan, and two brothers, Edwin and Clifford Hemingway.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 6 at 11 a.m. at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin Street in Rumford, with Reverend Linwood Hanson officiating.

Iinterment will be in the spring in the Abbotts Mills cemetery in Rumford.

Those who desire may contribute to the Bryant Pond Baptist Church, 112 Church Street, Bryant Pond, ME 04219 in his memory.

Mrs. M. Louise Henderson
2000-02-10

WESTPARIS- M.Louise Henderson, 91, formerly of Oxford died Sunday evening, February 6, 2000, at Ledgeview Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Oxford,March 26,1908, the daughter of Paul and Jennie Butler Roderick.

She attended Oxford schools and graduated from Oxford High School in 1925. She also attended Farmington Normal School.

Mrs. Henderson was a school teacher in Oxford for a time and was later employed at Robinson Manufacturing in Oxford as a weaver from where she retired after many years.

She was a former communicant of St. Mary's Church and also attended the Oxford Congregational Church occasionally.

She enjoyed her family,especially her grandchildren,and was a member of the Oxford Senior Citizens. She was also well known for her acts of kindness and caring way and enjoyed cooking for her family and charitable organizations.

She married Ralph Henderson in 1928; he died in 1977.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Winfield (Pauline) Robinson of Oxford; a son Alan; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; nieces; nephews and cousins. Mrs. Henderson was predeceased by a son, Richard N. Henderson Sr. who died in 1995.

Family and friends called at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway on Wednesday where visitation was followed by a funeral service at 1p.m. with Rev. Lawrence Conley officiating.

Spring Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Oxford.

Those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the Ledgeview Living Center,Activities Department,Bethel Road,West Paris,Me,04289.

John H. Hepburn II
1999-03-18

John H. (Jack) Hepburn II of West Boothbay Harbor died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 53 on Tuesday, March 16.

Born on August 13, 1945 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Ruth W. and John H. Hepburn.

Mr. Hepburn graduated from Westmont Hilltop High School in Johnstown in 1964. He moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1967 where he met and married Sue Tilton of Boothbay Harbor on September 3, 1969.

In the late 1960s he worked for Arthur Barlow at Harbor Motors. He then went on to work as an auto insurance appraiser for General Adjustment Bureau, Crawford & Co., Port Adjusting and most recently Dirigo Appraisals.

He opened and ran the former Sea Side Cycle bicycle shop in Boothbay Harbor for several years.

Mr. Hepburn enjoyed spending time with his wife and children and twin grandsons. He enjoyed restoring his 1977 Jeep CJ5 and 1969 Nova SS. There was nothing he couldn't fix or repair for anyone who asked him for help.

He was predeceased by his father, John H. Hepburn in 1981 and his brother, Robert Hepburn.

Survivors include his wife, Sue of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Julie McLoon and husband Doug of Boothbay; one son, John III and his wife Kristine of Trevett; and twin grandsons, Evan David Hepburn and John Henry Hepburn IV of Trevett; his mother, Ruth W. Hepburn of Johnstown, Penn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service.
