Mrs. Virginia E. Herrick
1999-12-16

WEST PARIS - Virginia E. Herrick, 82, died Sunday, December 12, 1999 at the Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.

She was born in Auburn, on July 25, 1917, the daughter of Elwood A. and Bernice McKeen Sanborn. She was educated in Auburn schools, and graduated from Edward Little High School in the class of 1935 and St. Mary's school of Nursing.

Mrs. Herrick worked as a nurse and as director of Nursing Homes in Norway and West Paris.

She was Past President of the Ring-McKeen American Legion Auxiliary Post #151 in West Paris. She was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church in South Woodstock and an active volunteer of the Ledgeview Living Center Activity program.

She married Ned I. Herrick on June 14, 1963; he died on July 15, 1989.

Mrs. Herrick is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Kathy) Bartlett of West Bethel; a grandson, Mark and his wife, Michelle, Bartlett ofBryant Pond; a granddaughter, Kelly, and her husband, Dan, Myers of Bethel and three great-grand children, Justye, Logan, and Jessika.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec.16, 1999, at the Andrews Funeral Home in South Woodstock. Visitation was held Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Wayside cemetery in West Paris.

Those who wish may make contributions in Mrs. Herrick's memory to the Activity Fund at the Ledgeview Living Center, P.O. Box 69, West Paris.

Meredith J. Heussi
2000-01-06

Meredith J. (Comstock) Heussi, 64, of Essex, Massachusetts, died Thursday, December 30, at her home following an extended illness. She was the wife of Harold L. Heussi.

Born in Malden on May 5, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Jonathan E. and Avis C. (Harris) Comstock. She was a graduate of Malden High School and had resided in Essex for the past 35 years.

Mrs. Heussi was employed in the admitting department at the Addison Gilbert Hospital for several years. She was a past chairwoman of the Essex Republican Committee and was once a Girl Scout leader in Essex.

In addition to her husband of 41 years, she is survived by two daughters, Adrienne L. Graziano, companion of Robert Warren, both of Boothbay Harbor; and Audrey, wife of Paul Holmstrem; three sons, Jonathan Heussi, Eric Heussi and Jeremy Heussi, companion of Jodi Swenson; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Allan Comstock.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 5 in the St. John's Episcopal Church in Gloucester. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Maine Special Olympics, 125 John Roberts Road, South Portland, ME 04101.

Elsa M. Hicks
1999-06-17

Elsa M. Hicks, age 93, of Cape Elizabeth died Saturday, June 5 at her residence.

Born on April 21, 1906 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Ernest H. and Elizabeth Marie Junge.

She graduated from Laural High School and Wells College in New York.

In 1946 she married Marvin D. Hicks and they summered on Squirrel Island since that time.

Mrs. Hicks and her husband were active with the Cleveland Symphony, the Cleveland Skating Club, the Western Reserve Historical Society and various musical organizations.

They moved to White River Junction, Vermont from Shaker Heights in 1971 and to Cape Elizabeth in 1983 where she was an active member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church.

She and her husband were active with the Squirrel Island Chapel, the Squirrel Island Preservation Foundation, and the Squirrel Island Fire Department where in 1993 they gave the island a new fire truck.

She was predeceased by her husband on May 22, 1994.

Survivors include one nephews, Stephen G. Junge; and two nieces, Margaret Junge Griffin and Ingrid Junge Shaffer.

A gathering of friends and family was held on Saturday, June 12 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Cape Elizabeth with Rev. Audrey S. Delafield officiating.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 at the Squirrel Island Chapel with Rev. Audrey S. Delafield of St. Alban's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in Lake View cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Squirrel Island Preservation Foundation, Squirrel Island, ME 04570. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath, Maine.

Blanche Hill
1999-10-29

Blanche G. Hill, 81, died last Monday at a Gorham nursing home.

She was born in New Gloucester on July 20, 1918, the daughter of Valentine and Laura Hall. She attended New Gloucester schools, and lived in New Gloucester her whole life.

For many years, Mrs. Hill was a cook at Cole Farms Restaurant in Gray. She enjoyed family activities, going for automobile rides, doing crossword puzzles, dancing and cooking.

She was predeceassed in 1996 by her son, Robert E. Hill. She is survived by her former husband, Arthur Hill, of Scarborough; three sons, Sherman V. Hill, Allan S. Hill, both of Gray, and Richard A. Hill, of Standish; one daughter, Laura E. Hill, of Scarborough; a sister, Catherine M. Hillson, of Scarborough; and 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Gray Rescue, P.O. Box 297, Gray, ME 04039.

John H. Hilton
2000-03-30

John Hodgkins Hilton, 84, of Alna, died unexpectedly Friday, March 24 at his winter home in Zephyrhills, Florida. born in North Newcastle, he was a son of Clarence W. and Beatrice Hodgkins Hilton, and attended local schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy in 1932. He served in the Army with the occupational forces in Japan after World War II. Mr. Hilton worked as a clerk for McGray's Store in Damariscotta, later working for Maine Central Railroad for more than 30 years. He retired as a section foreman for the Rockland branch railroad in the 1970s. He spent his summers at his family home in Alna, and his winters in Florida. Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Ferrell of Murphy, N.C.; three sons, John R. of Newcastle, Clifton B. of Jefferson and Walter H. of Damariscotta; two brothers, Ralph W. of East Rochester, N.H., and Robert C. Sr. of Newcastle; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 1 at the Strong Funeral Home Chapel in Damariscotta, with Rick Newell officiating. Burial will follow in Whitefield Cemetery.

Philip H. Hodgdon
1999-07-01

Philip H. ``Red" Hodgdon, 76, beloved husband of Kathleen and father of Eric B. of Trevett, Stephanie A. Wiley of Woolwich, Jeffrey P. of Trevett and Jonathan M. of Back River Road, Boothbay, died Wednesday, June 23 from a drowning accident as a result of a fall from his dock.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on January 8, 1923 the son of Philip and Madeleine Hodgdon, he attended local schools where he played baseball and football.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard a Navy repair ship, sailing throughout the Pacific Ocean.

He worked at Bath Iron Works in his early years, apprenticing as a coppersmith. He later owned a marine worm dealership and often referred to his home as the ``house that worms built."

Mr. Hodgdon was a lobster fisherman for most of his life, starting at age 10. He also fished for sea eggs and built skiffs that he and Harlan Lewis sold in Massachusetts.

He was a member of the Pipefitters and Plumbers Union Local #716 of the State of Maine and worked at many nuclear plants and paper mills throughout the country, including Thule Air Force Base in Greenland.

He was an avid duck and deer hunter and especially enjoyed hunting rabbits with his favorite beagle, ``Gunner."

Mr. Hodgdon served as a selectman for the town of Boothbay for several years and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.).

Besides his wife and children, he is survived by a brother, C. Stephen, of Trevett; two sisters, Virginia ``Gin" Roberts of Trevett and Deborah ``Deb" Westbrook of Damariscotta. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Sarah and Katie, children of Eric and Libby Hodgdon; Andrea, Gordon, Patrick and Megan, children of Frank and Stephanie Wiley; Angelica and Chris, children of Jeff and Rosemarie Hodgdon; and Amanda, Nathaniel and Jacob, children of Jon and Deb Hodgdon. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held Sunday, June 27 at Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Crosby G. Hodgman

Crosby G. Hodgman of Wiscasset, born in 1902 in Medford, Mass., but a resident of Maine for much of his life, died at home early Tuesday, October 19, after a brief illness.

Mr. Hodgman, a man of wide interests and a well-known local artist, was a retired educator and Headmaster of Beaver Country Day School who had lived since 1968 in the Old Custom House at Wiscasset with his wife of 32 years, the former Charlotte Mansfield Rust.

He was a former President of the Wiscasset Library and President of the Lincoln County Historical Society. With his wife Charlotte he founded the gift shop New Cargoes at the old Custom House, and Le Garage Restaurant.

He was a painter of note and an active participant in many local arts programs. He directed the Title III program "Treasure Hunt," 1966-70, bringing artistic experiences to local school children.

The son of the late Fred and Helen Hodgman, residents for many years in Maine, Mr. Hodgman received his B.A. from Bowdoin College in 1925 and his M.A. in History from Cornell University. After a year as instructor in English and History at Cornell he became a teacher at Melrose High School, Melrose, Mass., 1926-27, and went on to head the History Department at Chicago Latin School from 1929 through 1943. During his time in Chicago he spent five years, 1936-41, as a resident at the famed Hull House. In 1943 he was named Headmaster of Beaver Country Day School, Chestnut Hill, Mass., where he served until his retirement in 1963.

In 1948 he undertook American Unitarian work for undernourished French children. In 1952 he took part in the Experiment in International Living in France, in 1956 the International Education through Art program in the Netherlands, and in 1958 the International Schools in Paris. He was a member of the American Delegation to the Atlantic Treaty Association meetings at Paris in 1956, Luxembourg in 1960, and Kiel, Germany in 1961. During a trip around the world in 1959 he visited International Schools in 21 nations; that same year he served as a member of the American Delegation and undertook projects of the World University Service, Ibadan, Nigeria.

Survivors include is wife, Charlotte Rust Hodgman of Wiscasset; his son, Christopher (Joanna) Hodgman of Rochester, New York; step-daughters, Cheryl Rust of Wiscasset, Amba Rust Coleman (Robert) of Chelmsford, Mass., and Cathy Myrick Quimby (Stephen Zoloth) of New York City; his sister, Gail Hodgman of Assonct, Mass., as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchild-ren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 23 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Bowdoin College, 4100 College Station, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Wiscasset.

Mary S. Hoffman
2000-06-08

Mary S. Hoffman, 90, of Alna, died Sunday, June 4 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Belfast, she was a daughter of Harry H. and Mildred Maynard Stimpson. She moved to Portland as a young girl and graduated in 1927 from Deering High School.

She married Ernest B. Hoffman. He died in 1964.

Mrs. Hoffman was employed at Atherton's Furniture store and People's Laundry in Portland for several years as a secretary.

In 1957 she moved to Hallandale, Florida. She moved to Alna in 1992 to live with her sister.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and hooking.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam Haynes of South Paris; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth) Goodrich of Alna; two grandchildren; and 41 nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, June 7 in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements were by Mayo and Daigle Funeral home in Wiscasset.

Elizabeth J. Betty Holbrook
1999-10-21

RUMFORD - Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth J. Betty Holbrook were conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, at the Meader & Sons Funeral Home in Rumford, with Reverend Clyde W. Park Sr. officiating. Music selections included What A Friend We Have In Jesus and God Be With You Till We Meet Again.

Committal services were conducted by Reverend Clyde W. Park Sr., and Interment was in the Farrington-Morton cemetery in Mexico.

Pall bearers were Scott Billings, Aaron Billings, Dane DeConzo, Eric Cote, Andrew Powell, and Robert Eastman.

Mrs. M. Janet Howarth
1999-11-18

SOUTH PARIS - M. Janet Howarth, 69, of Papoose Pond in North Waterford and Scarborough died Tuesday, November 16, 1999 at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Berlin, NH on October 19, 1930 the daughter of Edward W. and Marie Cote O'Neil. She was a graduate of Portland High School.

She had been a housewife. She was a member of the Sun Shine Club of New Limerick. She served in the U. S. Marine Corp for three years as a Sergeant. She married Wallace L. Howarth on May 26, 1956.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Glenn E. Howarth of Westbrook and Michael J. Howarth of Palmer, Alaska; two brothers, George E. O'Neil and John W. O'Neil both of Portland; two sisters, Louise Kilcline of North Kingston, RI., and Patricia Dubar of Portland and six grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Pulpit Rock cemetery in North Waterford.

Donations can be made in her memory to the Alzheimers Association of ME. Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.
