Mrs. Virginia Irene Litchfield

SOUTH PARIS - Virginia Irene Litchfield, 86, of South Paris died Monday, May 28, 2007 at Market Square Health Care Center. She was born in Sudbury, MA on May 15, 1921, the daughter of Charles and Edith L. Hunt Miller. She graduated from Waltham High School and Waltham City Hospital Nursing School. She was a registered nurse, first at York Hospital, then for Dr. Akerberg and Dr. Hazelton, retiring from Market Square Health Care Center.

She loved to read, crochet and do crossword puzzles. She married Clifton Litchfield.

Mrs. Litchfield is survived by a son, Douglas H. Litchfield and his wife Donna of Harrisonburg, VA; a daughter, Ann Litchfield and her significant other, Charles Donachie of Greenwood; three granddaughters, Thea Campbell and her husband Scott of Harrisonburg, VA, Mila Litchfield of Harrisonburg, VA and Carin Donachie of Greenwood; a great-granddaughter, Sadie Campbell of Harrisonburg, VA and a niece, Jennifer Gilkie and her husband Derik Lucci of Brooklyn, NY and their daughter, Anna Lucci. She was predeceased by her husband, Clifton on November 11, 1986 and a sister, Judith W. Gilkie.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 17 East Main St., South Paris. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Mrs. Carolyn V. Proctor

OXFORD - Carolyn V. Proctor, 63, of Oxford died Sunday, June 3, 2007 at her home.

She was born in Portsmouth, NH on March 2, 1944. She attended school in West Paris and had been a homemaker all of her life. Christmas was a very special time for family and she made sure that they never went without. She was the neighborhood "Mom," the kids were always at her house. She loved reading, shopping and her pets. She will be sadly missed by her kittens, Isaiah and Pumpkin. She was always very generous and kind hearted. She married Joseph Proctor on November 19, 1965; he passed away on December 14, 1991.

Mrs. Proctor is survived by two daughters, Virginia Robinson and her husband Matt of West Paris and Jody Proctor and her companion Tom Williams of Norway; a son, Brandon Proctor of Oxford; two brothers, Herman Doughty of West Paris and Wayne Carro and his wife Brenda of West Paris; sisters, Penny Breton and her husband Leo of Arizona, Pammy Durgin and her companion Ron Durgin of Norway, Betsy Williams of Rumford, Dawn Chamberlain of Florida, Joanne Bean of Acton, Barbara Eccelton and her husband Ken of New York, Peggy Masse and Nancy Bedard of Norway and a grandchild, Destiny Carolyn Robinson of West Paris.

She was predeceased by her birth mother, Susan Doughty; her adopted mother, Virginia Estes; a sister, Patty Minnerly; a son, Jason Proctor and a grandchild, Kristina Lee Robbins.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 15 at 11 a.m. at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn. Family and friends may call at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. John Arnold Swanson

SOUTH PARIS - John Arnold Swanson, 46, of South Paris died Wednesday, September 12, 2007.

He was born in Burbank, CA on February 25, 1961, the son of Henry Edward and Frances Beach Swanson. He had been employed at Maine Machine in the finish department for the last three years. He enjoyed fishing, camping and canoeing. He married Julia Broome on October 29, 1988.

Mr. Swanson is survived by his wife of South Paris; a daughter, Vanessa of South Paris; two sons, Adam and Cody both of South Paris; two sisters, Marcia Greene of South Paris and Kathy Kelly Gaynor of Hartford; two brothers, Robert McGrath of Tilton, NH and Henry Swanson of Harrisburg, PA and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, September 18 at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home 45 Main St., South Paris. Graveside services were held at Last Rest Cemetery in Merrimack, NH on Wednesday, September 19.

Mrs. Irma H. Hill

RANGELEY PLANTATION - Irma H. Hill, 84, of Rangeley Plantation, formerly of Oxford, passed away on October 11 at the home of her daughter, following a long illness.

She was born April 6, 1923 to Irville A. and Susan (Barrows) Armstrong in Memoramcook, New Brunswick, Canada.

In 1928, her family moved to So. Lancaster, MA, where she received her education. She graduated from South Lancaster Academy and attended Atlantic Union College.

She was married to Paul L. Hill on August 15, 1942 in Boylston, MA The couple lived for many years in Worcester and Auburn, MA, where they raised their three children. She took an active role in youth groups such as Cubs Scouts and Pathfinders.

She was manager of Sydenstricker Galleries in Brewster, MA and Lake Worth, FL over a 16-year period.

Her love for New England brought her back to Maine where she enjoyed living by her beloved lake in Oxford. She then managed the gift shop at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston until her retirement.

She was a lifelong craft enthusiast, an avid reader and lover of animals and all nature.

Mrs. Hill is survived by her daughter, Carol and her husband Roy Henrickson of Rangeley Plantation; son, Theodore of No. Oxford, MA; son, David of Yarmouthport, MA; five grandchildren, Julie Bergeron and husband Cliff of Oxford, Eric Henrickson of Morgantown, WV, Nicole Finne and husband Jason of Ware, MA, Scott Hill and wife Liz of Worcester, MA and Jamie Hill of Millbury, MA; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ethel Lloyd and Genevieve Sutphin.

A graveside service and interment was held at Eastwood Cemetery in Lancaster, MA on Monday, October 15. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Hill's memory to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 819, 15 Strawberry Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04243-0819. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Mr. Toivo Piirainen

SOUTH PARIS - Toivo Piirainen of South Paris went to be with the Lord on April 30, 2008 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway after a short, sudden illness. Mr. Piirainen was the son of Toini and Toivo Piirainen and was known to his family as Bob.

He served in the Air Force as an air policeman in Okinawa and then returned home where he met his lovely wife to be, June Martin, whom he loved so much. They just celebrated their 57th anniversary. Mr. Piirainen worked in the woods and then worked for the Town of Norway before retiring.

He enjoyed going for rides daily with his wife and they spent much of their time traveling to weddings, graduations, etc. If there was ever anything happening with one of their girls or grandchildren they were there. When he wasn't on the road, he enjoyed staying home, mowing the lawn or just sitting on the porch with his family. He also enjoyed playing cribbage with his buddies. He was one of a kind.

Mr. Piirainen is survived by his wife; eight daughters and their spouses, Donna and Rocky MacDonald of Levant, Roberta and Tom Christian of North Carolina, Kathy Piirainen of Connecticut, Tobey and Jose Medina of Connecticut, Terri and Paula Walker of Greenwood, Toini and Toni Aulet of Massachusetts, Sheila and Tom of Norway and Nicole Daggett of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Jack of California and five sisters, Katrina of Connecticut, Sandy of Connecticut, Ilona of Norway, Anita of Oxford and Fredrekia of Auburn.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Ed, Eino and Ronny and two sisters, Barbara and Betty.

Funeral arrangements will be at a later date.

Mrs. Lisa E. Smith

BRYANT POND - Lisa E. Smith, 38, of Bryant Pond died Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She was born in Lewiston on February 23, 1970 to Elwin Hatch Toothaker and Eleanor Adley.

She had worked at the Rumford Paper Mill as a secretary. She liked all kinds of sports and liked to hunt and fish.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband Kenneth of Bryant Pond; her mother, Eleanor Adley of Hampden; her children by Kyle (Chuck) Morrisette, Michael Morrisette of Manchester, NH, Ashley Lynn Morrisette of Mexico and Kari Morrisette of Portland and Tiffany Libby and her dad Robert Libby of West Peru; step-daughter, Amanda Smith of Bryant Pond; a sister, Theresa (Teri) Richard of Rumford and her children, Aaron Griffin and Kyle Richard of Rumford, and Kristin Richard of Rumford. Other survivors include great-nephew, Aaron Robert Griffin of Lewiston; brother, Richard Toothaker of Hampden; step-father, Richard Toothaker and his companion Nancy Bedard of Weld; step-grandmother, Ruth Toothaker of Weld; a special aunt, Elaine Trufant of Richmond and her husband John; uncles, James and Thomas Adley of Canton and Stanley Jonaitis of Portland; mother in-law and father-in-law, Gale and Corinne Smith of Oxford; brother in-law and sister-in-law, Rick and Karen Smith of Oxford and their children, Jackie Smith, Travis Smith and Kassi Harney; Jackie's children, Caleb Smith, Hailey Parsons and Jacoby Wight; brother-in law and sister-in-law, Norman and Rhonda Derosier and their daughter Amy and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kevin and Kathy Kimball and their children.

Family and friends attended a visitation followed by a memorial service on Monday, September 8 at Oxford Hills Funeral Services, 1037 Main Street, Rte 26, Oxford.

Esther Martin Merrill

SOUTH PARIS - Esther Martin Merrill, 102, of South Paris died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Market Square Health Care Center where she has resided since August 2004.

She was born in Oxford, July 6, 1908, the oldest child of George and Alice Smith Martin. She attended schools in Oxford and Mechanic Falls. She married Clarence Chester Merrill of South Paris in 1925 and they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary before he died in November 1994.

She was employed at Cummings in Norway, Paris Corn Shop and in the Oxford County Register of Deeds Office. She cared for several children in her on occasion as well as caring for both her parents and her brother Eddie Martin in their last years. She always made herself available to those who needed help. Most of all she loved her husband, their children, all their grandchildren and her home.

Mrs. Merrill was a member of the Mother's Club, Friday Club, Extension and Deering Memorial United Methodist Church where she held several offices. She also served Kiwanis dinners regularly with other members. She was a wonderful cook; one of the Kiwanians always ordered a special custard pie to go every month.

Survivors include her son, Clarence H. and his wife Bernice of Oxford; two daughters and their husbands, Gloria and Hugo Komulainen of Standish and Eloise and Peter Collette of West Paris; grandchildren, Virginia Rice, Steven Merrill and Carol, Linda Tenney, Rick Tenney, David and Beth Komulainen, Tom and Linda Komulainen, Diane Komulainen and husband Jodie McGowan, Bradley and Lucie Collette, Bruce and Lynne Collette, Barry Collette, Peter Collette, Diane Collette and Tania Collette; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and two brothers, Eugene Martin of Indiana and Percy Martin of Norway. Mrs. Merrill was predeceased by a grandson, Bryan Collette and a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Merrill, who passed in 1976. 9p

Family and friends attended funeral services Tuesday, September 7 at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, South Paris with interment following at Riverside Annex Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Deering Memorial United Methodist Church, Tower Fund, Main St., South Paris, ME 04281.

Ethel Mary Davis

SOUTH WOODSTOCK - Ethel Mary Davis, 76, of South Woodstock passed away on Monday, October 4, 2010 at Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris. She was born at South Woodstock on November 8, 1933, the daughter of Gayden G. and Bernice Radcliffe Davis. She was a resident of this community all of her life. Miss Davis attended Woodstock schools and graduated with honors from Woodstock high School in the Class of 1952. She was employed as a secretary and accountant/bookkeeper for a former Judge of Probate and an Attorney at Law. She served in this same capacity for 28 years at P. H. Chadbourne & Company of Bethel. She helped her father in his retail meat business and handled the bookkeeping for several years while doing her regular job. In 1974 she became a certified real estate broker and worked for the former Hall & Hall Realty of South Paris.

In 1983 Miss Davis was elected to the position of Selectman and was the first woman to fill this position in the Town of Woodstock. She served the town in this capacity for four years. During this time she handled the accounting and bookkeeping records. She served on School District #44 Booster’s Club for several years and voluntarily served six years on the Board of Directors of Community Concepts of South Paris and also served as treasurer for part of this period. She was a member of S.T.A.R. Group (School Taxation Association Review group) representing the municipalities of Andover, Bethel, Greenwood and Woodstock. She was a member of the comprehensive plan for the Town of Woodstock. In July of 1987 she was hired by School Administrative District #43, Byron, Mexico, Roxbury and Rumford, as their accountant bookkeeper until September of 1995, retiring due to medical problems.

Fishing and hunting gave her much enjoyment. She took great interest in all family activities and was an avid girl scout in her younger years. She was a very giving and caring individual and seemed to have a positive outlook on life in general. She dearly loved her family and cherished her dear friends.

Survivors include her sister, Edith M. Deegan of South Paris; her brother, Gayden George Thomas Davis of Bradenton, FL; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, a great-great-nephew and a great-great-niece. She was predeceased by her parents and a dear sister, Leona Farnum.

At her request there will be no visiting hours or funeral. Family and close friends are invited to attend graveside services on Sunday, October 17 at 2 p.m. at the South Woodstock Cemetery, Andrews Road, Bryant Pond. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris.
