Wilfred B. "Bill" Harris
2004-02-05

Wilfred B. "Bill" Harris, 64, of Boothbay Harbor, award-winning staff artist at the Boothbay Register and Wiscasset Newspaper for the past 32 years, died at home Thursday, January 29, 2004 after a year-long battle with cancer.

He was born April 30, 1939, the son of Beatrice Bennett Harris and Wilfred Harris, and grew up in Lewiston. To his family, he was known as ``Butch."

He attended Martel Elementary and Jordan Junior High in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1959. He was voted class artist his senior year.

Bill served in the U.S. Air Force after high school before moving to Boston, where he worked while attending the Museum School in Boston. He moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1965 because he loved art and the area was touted as being home to so many well-known artists. He worked for Mitchell's (later Wheeler's) Drug Store, at the Mobil gas station and picking shrimp, and also operated his own craft shop before being hired as staff artist at the Boothbay Register and Wiscasset Newspaper in January of 1972. He continued to work up until three weeks before his death.

During his years at the newspaper, he won scores of awards in both Maine and New England-wide newspaper competitions for advertising design, as well as for special supplements which he helped create. The "Summertime" vacation guide published each spring by the newspaper always contained the special touches for which he was so well known.

He single-handedly produced some spectacular stage designs for both Windjammer Days pageants and for high school plays, as well as other special events in the region.

His creativity spilled over into the entire community, with store window displays, billboards and other public places bearing signs of his graphics and sense of humor. Friends were always seeing newly created works of art from pen and ink or papier mâché to soft sculpture and wood designs, even to the small packets of "freeze-dried seagull poop" which he marketed to tourists for a few years.

Bill had served as a mentor for several local students interested in pursuing careers in art, and always had words of encouragement for any budding young artist or actor. He was also an avid sports fan and strong supporter of both the high school football and basketball teams.

He was predeceased by his father.

Surviving are his mother, Beatrice of Lewiston; a brother, George Harris and his wife Karen of Lewiston; a sister, Margaret Harris Theobald and her husband Rod of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews in Wisconsin, Maine, New Hampshire and New York.

A celebration of his life is scheduled for Sunday, February 8, at 4:30 p.m. at the Opera House (downstairs). Donations of pot luck dishes to be shared following the remarks will be appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations in Bill's name to the Irene and Butler Eames Scholarship Fund for the Arts, c/o Superintendent of Schools, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

An "Art Wake" in celebration of Bill's life will be held in the spring.
