Barbara A. Harris
2003-01-16

Barbara Ann Harris, 69, of Wiscasset, died Friday, January 10 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born on May 6, 1933 in Bath, she was the daughter of Robert W. Sr. and Amanda E. (Munsey) King.

She attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1950. She was employed at the Bath National Bank for a period of time after graduation.

On May 3, 1953, she married Lawrence C. Harris and they resided in Bath. Along with raising her family, she also worked as the secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Bath, retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Harris was a life-long supporter of Corliss Street Baptist Church, a member of the Friendship Chain of Quilters of Wiscasset, the Pine Tree Quilters Guild and past secretary for the Maine Woodcarvers Association.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed tending flowers in her greenhouse and gardens. Her other interests included quilting, knitting and other creative arts.

She was predeceased by one sister, Melvenia King, in 1990.

Survivors include her parents, Robert W. King Sr. and Amanda E. King of Bath; her husband, Lawrence C. Harris of Wiscasset; her son, Jeffrey C. Harris and his wife Judith of West Bath; her daughter, Cynthia A. Harris of Bath; three brothers, Robert W. King Jr. of Woolwich, Dennis J. King of Seminole, Fla., and David A. King of Woolwich; three grandchildren, Aaron J. Harris of Boston, Mass., Amanda E. Harris of Bath, and Jenna R. Harris of West Bath; and many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. A graveside service will be held in the Memorial Garden in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rumnerill Road, Wiscasset, in the spring. A gathering of friends and family will be held at Corliss Street Baptist Church after the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 495 Old Connecticut Path, Suite 220, Framingham, MA 01701 or Corliss Street Baptist Church, 402 Middle Street, Bath, ME 04530. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

George R. Harrison
2004-10-28

George R. Harrison, 78, of Westport Island, passed away Monday, October 25.

Born in Everett, Mass. on July 2, 1926, he lived in several Maine communities before settling on Westport Island. After serving in Europe during World War II he married Louise Savage and raised a family, Ronald, Jeanette and Marie. A man of many talents, He flew a spotting plane for large commercial seiners as a pilot. He owned and fished from a series of lobster boats and built homes on Westport Island. A long-time resident of Westport Island, Mr. Harrison was the epitome of the Maine fisherman.

He was a gentleman who loved to walk and will be missed by all who he chatted with along the roads and watersides.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Louise Savage Harrison of Wiscasset; one son, Ronald Harrison of Westport Island; one daughter, Jeanette H. Brown; three grandchildren, Cynthia Brown, Dawn Brown and Ronald Harrison Jr.; close friends and relatives.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Marie Harrison, in 1977.

Phyllis Hanna
2003-08-07

Phyllis Wheeler Fairhurst Hanna, 78, of Topsham died Thursday, July 31 at the Freeport Nursing Home.

Born in Lisbon Falls, June 6, 1925, she was the daughter of Roy A. and Gertrude Baumann Wheeler. She graduated from Durham High School and attended Vassar College. She owned and operated her own upholstery business and was a member of the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, music, dance, crafts, cooking and camping and had a great love of animals.

Mrs. Hanna leaves four children, George Fairhurst and his wife Ginny of Topsham, Martha Fairhurst Molleur of Warren, Rhode Island, Sally Fairhurst Flaig and her husband Roger of Topsham and Thomas Fairhurst and his wife Terry of Newcastle; grandchildren, Robert Molleur and his wife Robin and Elizabeth Hanes and her husband Timothy, all of Rhode Island, Justin and Timothy Flaig of Topsham, and Danielle and Britani Fairhurst of Newcastle; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for family and friends were held Monday, August 4 at Hillside Cemetery, Lisbon Falls. Donations may be made to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 420 Poland Rd. Auburn, ME 04210. Arrangements by Crosman Funeral Home, 40 Main St. Lisbon Falls.

Pauline E. Hardwick
2003-05-29

Pauline E. Hardwick, 83, died Saturday, May 24at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor after a brief illness.

Born November 18, 1919 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Harry and Margaret Bernier Matthews.

Mrs. Hardwick was one of the original members of the Boothbay Region Athletic Boosters Club when it was formed in the 1950s. For 29 years she was a custodian at Boothbay Region High School. She worked at Ken Yereance's bakery and most recently at the Hannaford store in Boothbay Harbor where she enjoyed her "deli" friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, LeRoy Hardwick; a son, Roy E. Hardwick; and by three brothers, Wendell, Linwood and Merle Matthews.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Latter of Boothbay; a sister, Madelyn Delano of Wiscasset; five grandchildren, Cathy Latter of Boothbay Harbor, Mrs. Chester (Susan) Sprague of Boothbay, Mickey and Tracy Latter of Boothbay and Scott Hardwick of Boothbay Harbor; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation gathering was held Tuesday May 27 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 28 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Athletic Boosters Club, c/o Cindy Pottle, 5 Oak St., Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Hwy., Edgecomb, ME 04556. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Laura V. Harley
2004-01-22

Laura Violet Harley, 93, of Boothbay, died Thursday, January 15 at St. Andrews Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Norristown, Penn. on June 8, 1910, she was the daughter of Jay and Lottee McHale Poley.

Mrs. Harley enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchild, going out for rides in the car, dining out at different restaurants, and shopping at Wal-Mart.

Survivors include a son, Douglas and wife Diane Harley of Boothbay; three half sisiters, Iva Stevenson of Berwin, Penn., Katherine Tyson of Trapp, Penn., and Eleanor Nickerson of Washington State; three half brothers, Warren Poley of Royersford, Penn., Kenneth Poley of Arkansas, and Ronald Poley of Delaware; two grandchildren, Douglas Glenn Harley and wife Kim of Stafford, Conn., and Deirdre Harley of Portland; one great- granddaughter, Mikayla Harley of Stafford, Conn.

A private family service will be held, with Interment to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Arthur Harmon, 90
2002-03-01

Arthur B. Harmon, 90, formerly of Lawrence Road, Gray, died February 24 at a Windham health-care facility.

Mr. Harmon was born in Windham, a son of Orland and Esther Hall Harmon, and attended schools in Gray, graduating from Pennell Institute.

After graduating, Mr. Harmon started his career as a carpenter. He worked in the trade all his life, mostly self-employed in construction and remodeling.

As a young man, he worked for many area dairies and chicken farms; during World War II, he worked on Liberty ships as a welder at the South Portland Shipyard.

He lived in Gray most of his life. His interests included genealogy, gardening, hunting, hiking and reading.

His wife, Bernice E. Nason Harmon, died in 1996. A son, Lester, died in 1992, and a daughter, Carlene, died in 1937.

He is survived by two sons, Paul C. Harmon and his wife Bette, of Gray, and Damon E. Harmon and his wife Elizabeth, of Cumberland; a brother, Marvin Hannon, of Gray; a sister, Jeannette Abbott, of Wolfsboro, NH; a granddaughter, Lori Chason, of Windham; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. Douglas Hedstrom officiated at a funeral service last Wednesday; burial will be in Gray Village cemetery in spring.

Wallace K. Hart
2003-11-20

Wallace "Wally" Kemp Hart, 90, of Wiscasset, died Monday, November 17 at Maple Haven in Wiscasset.

Born on August 3, 1913 in Portland, he was the son of Marion L. Matthews and Lester Melcher Hart. In 1931 he graduated from Cony High School in Augusta. He attended Gorham Normal School for three years and in 1935 he graduated from Gorham College. In 1952 he received his B.S. Degree from University of Maine, later his Masters degree from Montclair State College, New Jersey, did further graduate work at Montclair, Rutgers University, and University of Kentucky, Richmond, Kentucky.

Mr. Hart taught at Cony High, Augusta for ten years, Rangeley High three years, Dixfield High five years, where he was also assistant principal, coached girls softball, taught electrical, automotive, woodworking and pattern foundry industrial trade courses, Lewiston High for six years and Irvington High, Irvington, New Jersey for 22 years. Hart was selected as the teacher of the year of Essex Country, New Jersey. He was also on the adjunct faculty of Kean College of Union, New Jersey for eight years.

He served as president of the New Jersey Industrial Arts Association, a 900 member group and many State Industrial Arts committees. In 1966 Wally applied for the N.D.E.A. (National Defense Education Act) program at Richmond, Kentucky. From 700 applicants Hart was one of the 25 successful candidates selected to attend one of the country's top experimental wood technology training schools. At the end of the school Hart received a distinguished honor when being selected for the Outstanding Craftsman Award by his fellow classmates.

Retiring from Irvington in 1976 after 41 years of teaching, he returned with his wife Phyllis to Edgecomb, where they lived for nine years before moving to Wiscasset.

Mr. Hart was a master woodworker craftsman who enjoyed working in his fully equipped woodworking shop in the basement of his home. He specialized in wood turning lathe work. The wooden round bowls with removable covers made with combinations of wood were some of his favorites. There are many fine pieces of furniture that grace the family home which he designed and built by hand. He was always a perfectionist for detail. His work has been displayed in craft shows in many parts of the country.

Mr. Hart has been involved in community activities all his life. For 35 years he did volunteer Boy Scout work and was scout master in both Augusta and Rangeley and was district commissioner of scouting in New Jersey. His personal efforts and hard work sent many a youth down the roadway to a successful life. He worked many hours for the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset and helped plan the Senior Center.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Phyllis (Eaton) Hart; one daughter, Carol Matlock (David) of Yorkville, Illinois; one son, Bradley (Suzanne) of Milford, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Chad Wallace Hart, Cambridge, Mass., Bonnie Hart, Milford, N.J., Brian Matlock, Westchester, Penn., and Glen Matlock, North Grafton, Mass.

A memorial service is planned at the First Congregational Church on Sunday, November 23rd at 2 p.m. A gathering with refreshments will follow in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset or the Wiscasset Senior Center.

Milton H. Hart
2000-11-16

Milton H. Hart, 75, of Edgecomb, died Friday, November 10 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

A son of Edward and Vera (Allen) Hart, he was born May 17, 1925 in Liberty.

As a youth, he moved with his family, to Haverill, Mass., where he attended schools.

He entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the South Pacific Solomon Islands during World War II. He was discharged a corporal.

Mr. Hart was employed as a machine designer, working for the NRC Company in Newton, Mass. In 1986 he moved to Maine where he rekindled his passion for painting and was active with the ASMA. He had several gallery showings throughout the years.

Survivors include his children, Douglas and Steven Hart, both of Massachusetts, Peter Hart of Virginia and Peggy Hart Pace of Illinois; a sister, Velma Maranda of Plainville, Conn.; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A son, David, and two brothers predeceased him.

Services were held Wednesday, November 15 at the Bremen Union Church in Bremen, with the Rev. Charles Shotzberger officiating. He will be laid to rest on Thursday, November 16 at the Lynnwood Cemetery, Haverhill, Mass. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

If desired, donations may be made to either the American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army, in his memory.

Anna E. Hart
2003-09-25

Anna E. Hart, 95, formerly of Southport and Boothbay Harbor, died Friday, September 19 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro. She was born April 27, 1908.

Mrs. Hart was a housekeeper for many families in the Boothbay Region. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilliary for many years. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Hart who died in 1966.

Survivors include a niece, Ardis Hart Footman of Greene; a nephew, John B. Stickney of North Yarmouth;

Mrs. Hart's caregiver for many years, Harold Webber of Southport; several great-nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held in Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.
