Margaret A. Hartelius
2001-08-09

Margaret A. (Bower) Hartelius, 78, an author and commercial artist for children's books for over 50 years, died July 3 at her home in Manahawkin, N.J. She summered on Boston Island, located near Southport Island, for the past 53 years.

Born in Reading, Michigan, she lived in Westfield, N.J. for 36 years prior to moving to Manahawkin in 1987.

Mrs. Hartelius was a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York, N.Y. and attended Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan for two years. She worked with her husband, Paul, in their home studio known as Briarmead as a freelance commercial artist for four publishers, Doubleday, Walker, Scholastic and Grosset & Dunlap, and organizations such as Campfire Girls and corporations including Fanny Farmer and Avon.

She created over 50 children's books, including picture books, puzzles, games, crafts, sticker books and an original children's magazine, Peanut Butter, published by Scholastic. Over seven million copies of her books have been sold worldwide and she is listed in the New York Times Children's Books bestseller list.

She was a member of the Pine Shores Art Association of Stafford Township and elected to the New Jersey Writers Hall of Fame at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1980.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Paul Hartelius Jr.; a son, Paul V. Hartelius III of Fanwood, N.J.; a daughter, Sharon A. Siefken of Cape May Ct. House, N.J. and Boston Island; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Methodist Church, Manahawkin, N.J. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pine Shore Art Association Scholarship Fund, 94 Stafford Avenue, Manahawkin, N.J. 08050.

Jack Hartford
2003-05-15

John S. Hartford, Sr., 84, of East Boothbay died at St. Andrews Hospital Tuesday, May 6. He had been a resident of the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor for the past three years.

He was born July 3, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of Newton Keith and Helen Souther Hartford. He grew up in Short Hills, N.J. where he graduated from the Morristown School. He attended Harvard University from 1937 to 1939 (class of 1941), then taught at the Norfolk School for Boys in Norfolk, Conn. from 1939 to 1941. In 1943 he graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick as a James Bowdoin Scholar. His spinal fusion prevented him from serving in World War II.

During the war years he worked in endocrine research at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston under the direction of Dr. Pinkus and Dr. Rock. He later worked at the Electro-Medical Laboratory in Holliston, Mass., assembling and testing electro-encephalographs and other medical instruments.

From 1947 to 1958, he was headquarters sales engineer at General Electric Company Clock and Timer Department, Ashland, Mass. In 1958, he moved his family to East Boothbay. For the next two decades he worked as a wiring and refrigeration employee and consultant at a number of local boatyards and businesses, including Paul Luke's Boatyard, Goudy & Stevens, Norman Hodgdon's, Sample's Shipyard, Robinhood Marina, PSECO and Twin Rivers Engineering. He later established Jack Hartford, Inc., designing control panels.

He learned to sail at his family's summer home on Great Herring Pond, Bournedale/Plymouth, Cape Cod, Mass. His interests and activities included finish carpentry, "messing around with boats," in particular his own ketch, Pogo, and a scale model of the clipper ship Flying Cloud; PTA, Choralaires, singing, playing several musical instruments, poetry, reading, the "1918 Club," and electronics. He will be remembered for his puns, jokes, and unique sense of humor.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Ruthie, and a brother, Keith.

He is survived by three daughters from his first marriage to Lee Barron:

Kitty Hartford of East Boothbay, Chapin Hartford Cull of Boothbay and Cory Hartford of East Boothbay; two sons from his second marriage to Barbara Rumsey: Keith Hartford of Portland and Jack Hartford, Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Barbara Condon of Bournedale, Mass.; a brother, Elliot Hartford of Cape Cod, Mass.; a niece, Helen Hartford Larsen of Boothbay; and nine grandchildren: Lee Miliano of Portland, Dr. Michelle Prince of Atlanta, Ga., Rob Huntley of Belmont, Mass., Marna Mitchell of Boothbay Harbor, Jeff Savastano, Jr. of Boothbay Harbor, Annie Galland of Palm City, Fla., Jennifer Winslow of Portland, Katie Onos of Brunswick and Marcy Graves of Boothbay; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will hold a private memorial gathering.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Ruth Hartford Memorial Fund, part of the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund, P.O. Box 293, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Louise S. Hartman
2001-08-16

Louise S. Hartman, 81, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., died Wednesday, August 8 at Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, N.J. as a result of complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Born in Youngwood, Penn., she was the daughter of Mena and Ira Showman. She also resided in Baltimore, Md.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Rochester, N.Y.; Greensburg, Penn. and Boothbay Harbor, before settling in Little Egg Harbor in 1983.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charles S. Hartman, a minister in the United Church of Christ.

At the time of her death, she was a resident of Seacrest Village Nursing Home in Little Egg Harbor.

During her life, Mrs. Hartman was an active volunteer in many community and church-related organizations including "Meals on Wheels" that she instituted in Boothbay Harbor. In addition, she was employed by Mystic Shores Adult Community, Little Egg Harbor, N.J., where she and her husband resided from 1983 to 1999. She was also an avid aviator and flew in many different propeller, jet powered, antique and modern aircraft as well as helicopters, simulators, sailplanes and hot air balloons. Her quick wit, warm personality and skillful card playing made her a friend to many.

Survivors include a brother, Donald I. Showman of Youngwood, Penn.; three sons, Edwin M. Hartman II of Somerset, N.J., Ira S. Hartman of Cumberland Center, and Stewart J. Hartman of Swainton, N.J.; one daughter, Charlie L. Hartman of China; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Tuckerton, N.J. and Greensburg, Penn. on dates to be announced later.

The family suggests that those who desire may send memorial contributions to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Inc., Woodholme Medical Building, Suite 515, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208.

Buck Hasch
2003-01-02

Buck Hasch died December 24, 2002, at his Southport home with his family by his side.

Born in Spokane, Washington on April 5, 1924, he was the son of H.J. Hasch and Lucile (Rundberg) Hasch. He spent his early years in California and Nebraska, graduating high school in Danville, Illinois. He briefly attended college in California until World War II, when he enlisted in the Navy Seabees.

During his tenure in the military, he served in Williamsburg, Virginia, Guadalcanal, Bora Bora and Norman, Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged as Yeoman Third Class in 1946.

Upon leaving the Navy, Mr. Hasch graduated from the University of Illinois and worked briefly in Washington, DC, as a cartographic engineer. In 1952 he moved with his first wife, Jean (Rogers) Hasch and family to the Boothbay Region and purchased the Pleasant View House on the island of Southport. He worked for Goudy & Stevens Shipyard before pursuing a career in marketing electronics with various concerns, including Raytheon, Sylvania, Microwave Associates and Dielectric Products in Raymond, Maine.

Mr. Hasch served the town of Southport as a member of the budget committee and building and plumbing inspector for several years. He was an avid reader, enjoyed barbershop music, had a great curiosity for life, an energetic personality, legendary charm and a wealth of knowledge. He was a "hands-on" man who enjoyed people and wanted to be remembered as a "gentle man." His smile and friendly greetings will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Jean (Swett) Hasch of Southport; daughters, Nini (Hasch) Corrin and family of Martinez, California; Maurelle (Hasch) Wyeth and family of Jacksonville, Oregon; Judy (Hasch) Diaz and family of Nashua, New Hampshire; and sons, Jack Hasch and family of Goleta, California; Bob Hasch and family of Southport, and the family of eldest daughter Jayce (Hasch) Kimbrough (deceased). A gathering of family and friends will be held at Everybody's Family Restaurant in Boothbay Harbor on Friday, January 17 from 3 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to any of the following organizations: Miles Home Health and Hospice, 42 Belvedere Rd., Damariscotta, ME 04543; or to the Boothbay Region YMCA, St. Andrew's Hospital, Friends of the Southport Historical Society, or the Boothbay Region Historical Society.

Walter C. Hasenfus
2000-11-09

Walter C. Hasenfus, 66, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, November 2, 2000 at his home.

Born March 10, 1934 in Boston, the son of Regina B. Vogel and Nathaniel J. Hasenfus, he studied art in Boston as a young man. His family summered at Five Islands prompting his father to write many books on the subject.

Mr. Hasenfus was a graduate of Boston College and earned his master's degree from the University of Maine in Orono. He served as a teaching Principal in the town of Bingham and later in the town of Appleton. He later moved to Vermont where he served as an associate professor at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed state side at the Pentagon where he met his wife, Rosalie Erickson.

Mr. Hasenfus retired from teaching and opened the Hasenfus Glass Shop in Boothbay Harbor where he created glorious blown glass ships and various other items for the last 26 years. He earned an international reputation as an artisan glass blower. Collectors of his work returned each summer to visit with him.

He loved children and many grew up watching his creative magic behind the torch and years later brought their children to observe the same magic. His work has been featured in many travel magazines and on PBS Made in Maine. His work has been on display at the Sandwich Glass Museum in Sandwich, Mass., which showcases American-made glass for many years. His work had also been displayed in juried shows throughout New England.

He was an avid reader, especially of Civil War history. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycling, sailing and the arts. He will be remembered for his loving guidance, generosity and wit.

Mr. Hasenfus was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, and Charter Member of the Rev. John J. Sullivan Council #10356, Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of the Maine Crafters Association.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Rosalie; two daughters, Mary and her husband Kevin Miller of Boothbay Harbor and Andrea and her husband Russell Perkins of Wiscasset; three sons, Steven Hasenfus and his wife Lori of Bangor, John Hasenfus of Rutland, Vermont, and Michael Hasenfus of Boothbay Harbor; two sisters, Marie Magliozzi of Middleton, Mass. and Five Islands and Barbara Cassidy of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; four brothers, Richard Hasenfus of Bath, David Hasenfus of Needham, Mass. and Five Islands, Paul and Robert Hasenfus, both of Five Islands; eight grandchildren, Renee, Josh and Jennifer Miller of Boothbay Harbor, Jacie Hasenfus of Rutland, Vt., Stephanie and Nikolaus of Bangor, and Christopher and Jesse Perkins of Wiscasset; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, November 13, 10 a.m., at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church with the Rev. Raymond Picard, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Park Avenue, Rockland, ME 04841.

Vivian H. Haskell
2001-12-20

Vivian H. Haskell, 68, of Boothbay Harbor, died Sunday, December 16 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born July 2, 1933 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Charles and Abigail Smith. She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and graduated in the class of 1952 from Boothbay Region High School.

Mrs. Haskell worked for the Boothbay Region Cold Storage, at St. Andrews Hospital as a nurse's aid, and lastly at Carbone's Boothbay Fruit Company. She was a member of the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church.

She loved to play Beano, cards, cribbage and walking in the snow. She also enjoyed watching her children play basketball and never missed a game. She also played the piano.

She was predeceased by her son, Dennis Haskell who died on October 11.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Roland O. Haskell Sr. of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Roland O. Haskell Jr. of Boothbay Harbor and James Haskell of Winthrop; two sisters, Carolyn Smith and Helen Smith, both of Boothbay Harbor; and seven grandchildren.

At the request of Mrs. Haskell there will no visiting hours or funeral services.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Dennis Haskell
2001-10-18

Dennis Haskell, 46, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, October 11 in Portland.

Born on December 12, 1955 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Roland and Vivian Smith Haskell.

He attended Boothbay Harbor schools and was employed at the Boothbay Harbor Fish & Cold Storage. In 1980, he went to work as the Assistant Foreman of the Boothbay Harbor Public Works Department. Due to a long illness this was his last job.

His hobbies included fishing, candlepin bowling, and wrestling. He was an extremely dedicated NASCAR fan, loved the water, boating, the outdoors and motorcycles.

Mr. Haskell was an active member of the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department from 1992. He enjoyed spending time with his son, Christopher.

Survivors include his parents, Roland and Vivian Haskell of Boothbay Harbor; his life partner of 18 years, Helen L. Farnham of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Christopher M. Haskell and Jon M. Farnham, both of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Lori and her husband Alan Eimen of Boothbay Harbor; two brothers, Roland Haskell Jr. of Boothbay Harbor and James Haskell of Winthrop; two granddaughters, Hannah Prest and Rachel Eimen of Boothbay Harbor; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Sunday, October 14 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. A Fireman's funeral service was held Monday, October 15 at the funeral home. Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiated.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Kidney Foundation of Maine, P.O. Box 1134, Portland, ME 04014 or Minnehaha Fire Company Fund, 11 Howard Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Agatha L. Hatch
2001-07-12

Agatha Lennot Hatch, 93, of Damariscotta, passed away on the morning of July 6 at her residence at Hodgdon Green.

Born in Bath on March 29, 1908, she was the daughter of George A. and Margaret (Grant) Lennox.

In 1926 she graduated from Morse High School and in 1928 from the former Gorham Normal School. Later, she did graduate work at the University of Maine in Orono.

Mrs. Hatch was a member of the Corlis Street Baptist Church in Bath where she was the treasurer for 15 years. She also belonged to the National Retired Teachers Association, the Bodwell Grange, and for over 30 years she was a member of the Eastern Star in Bath.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth L. Hatch Sr.

Survivors include two stepsons, Kenneth L. Hatch Jr. of North Whitefield, and Howard L. Hatch of Orange City, Florida; and one sister, Eleanor Plant of Wiscasset.

A graveside service was held at the Oak Grove cemetery in Bath on Tuesday, July 10 at 11 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.
