Vaughan Hathaway
2003-12-11

Vaughan Hathaway, 80, passed away Monday, December 8 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born in Montclair, N.J., on November 5, 1923, he was the son of Joseph and Sarah Vaughan Hathaway.

Mr. Hathaway grew up in Mont-clair, New Jersey and graduated from Montclair High School. He received a bachelors degree at Bates College in Lewiston and a master education degree from the University of Maine at Orono. Mr. Hathaway, who enjoyed Civil War history, was a history teacher at Cooperstown Academy in Cooperstown, N.Y. He later became principal of Boothbay Harbor High School and Boothbay Region High School for 16 years, retiring in 1975. After retirement he worked at the Rocktide Inn for 25 years as a seasonal employee.

Mr. Hathaway enjoying growing houseplants and baking bread and was an avid baseball and football fan.

He was an active member of the Maine Principals Association, Maine Dept. of Education Social Studies Curriculum Committee, Past President of Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club, member of the Seaside Masonic Lodge and other Masonic Orders. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor, he was Sunday school Superintendent, secretary of trustees, and sang in the choir. He was Past Patron of Mt. Pisgah O.E.S.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, June Chatto Hathaway of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Douglas Hathaway and wife Toni of Massapequa, N.Y., Arthur Hathaway of Nashua, N.H., and David Calvo of Bilbao, Spain; sister-in-law Dorcas Hathaway of South Portland; grandchildren, Chelsea, Olivia and Mariel Hathaway, all of Massapequa, N.Y.; three nieces and one nephew.

Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 11 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, December 12 at the First United Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 641, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund, P.O. Box 293, Boothbay Harbor, M 04538.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Natalie E. Hathorne
2003-10-30

Natalie E. Hathorne, 81, of York died Monday, October 20 at York Hospital.

Born on May 15, 1922 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Benjamin M. and Nettie (Rowe) Giles and was a 1940 graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School. During World War II, she worked in a machine shop in Boothbay.

For 21 years, Mrs. Hathorne had resided in Woolwich She was active in the Woolwich PTA, the Mother's Club and was a former Brownie leader.

Thirty-seven years ago she moved to York and was the manager of the York Community Thrift Shop for 25 years. She attended the First Parish Congregational Church of York.

Mrs. Hathorne was predeceased by a son, Drummond D. Hathorne, in 1951 and by seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband, Merle L. Hathorne of York; five sons, Ronald D. Hathorne of Wells, Albert N. Hathorne of Topsham, Stephen M. Hathorne of Clinton, S.C., Tyler O. Hathorne and Corey D. Hathorne both of York; two daughters, Sue Ellen Gay of Cape Neddick and Fay A. Labbe of Brunswick; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Benjamin M. Giles, Jr. of China, Maine; and three sisters, Audrey Chase of Edgecomb, Elizabeth Richardson of West Bath and Patricia Adams of Boothbay Harbor.

Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the York Community Services, Box 85, Cape Neddick, ME 03902. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

June M. Hawk
2002-12-19

June M. Hawk, 78, of Westport, died Saturday December 14, at her home.

Born in Lynn, Mass. on January 22, 1924, she was a daughter of Hervey C. and Lillian McCarthy Brown. She was educated in the local schools and graduated from Lynn High School.

On December 4, 1943 she married Paul E. Hawk. They made their home in West Newbury, Mass. for 17 years and then moved to Bath. Mrs. Hawk lived in Bath until her husband's death on January 21, 1984. She then moved to Westport to live with her daughter and family.

She enjoyed going to yard sales and flea markets, making braided rugs, knitting, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Hawk is predeceased by her husband, two sisters, Jackie Goodman and Jerry Gambale.

Survivors include two sons, Paul "Brud" E. Hawk Jr. and his wife Sandy of Minden, Nevada; Wayne Carter of Guilford, Conn.; two daughters, Jill A. Cooney and her husband Bill of Westport; Lynne M. Leonardo and her husband Joseph of East Providence, R.I.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours. A private family funeral service will be held in the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High Street in Bath. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Miles Home Health and Hospice, Lifeline of Midcoast Maine, 40 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta 04543.

John B. Hayes
2001-01-25

Admiral John B. (Jack) Hayes, 76, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1978 to 1982, died Wednesday, January 17 in Tavernier, Florida, and will be interred at Arlington National cemetery in Virginia on Wednesday, January 31 at 2 p.m. A memorial service in the Boothbay area will be scheduled at a later date.

Admiral Hayes is best remembered as a sailor and a champion of the Coast Guard as well as a beloved husband, father and friend.

"Admiral Hayes was one of our most dynamic Commandants, an icon in the legacy of the Coast Guard. He is truly loved by this organization and will be greatly missed," said Admiral James M. Loy, Commandant of the Coast Guard.

Admiral Hayes was born August 30, 1924, in Jamestown, N.Y. He entered the Coast Guard Academy July 14, 1943, and graduated June 5, 1946, with a commission as Ensign. He spent most of his Coast Guard career in command positions. These included shore commands in Japan, Florida, Vietnam, and Alaska as well as sea commands of three Coast Guard cutters. Admiral Hayes returned to the Coast Guard Academy as Commandant of Cadets before his promotion to Rear Admiral in 1973.

As Commandant, Admiral Hayes ordered a comprehensive Roles and Missions study that helped to shape the present-day Coast Guard. He led Coast Guard responses to several significant events including the Prinsendam rescue off the Alaskan coast, the Florida Air Flight 90 crash in Washington, D.C. and the Mariel Boatlift which, at the time, was the single largest search largest search and rescue operation in Coast Guard history. He also saw the Coast Guard through difficult budget battles and fended off proposed reorganizations he felt would undermine the flexibility and effectiveness of the Service.

Admiral Hayes received numerous awards over the course of his distinguished career. Among those were the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal with one gold star, the Legion of Merit with one gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Coast Guard Commendation Medal.

His profound impact on many individuals' lives was mirrored in his other interests and passions. An Eagle Scout, he continued his affiliation with the Boy Scouts as a troop leader and a member of the National Council. Both Bigelow Laboratory, a marine sciences laboratory in Boothbay Harbor and the Armed Services YMCA benefited in many ways from his expertise and skills in long-range planning during his tenure as a member and Chairperson of their Boards of Trustees. His passions for scuba diving, fishing and hiking took him all over the world with family and friends.

Admiral Hayes was an active member of St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Boothbay. He served as Senior Warden for four years and was a driving force in guiding the mission's efforts in planning for a church building.

Admiral Hayes was killed after being accidentally struck by a vehicle during a hike along the Florida Keys. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth of Boothbay Harbor; four children, Christie Hayes, John Hayes, William Hayes, and Virginia Hayes; and seven grandchildren.

The Hayes family requests donations in lieu of flowers be sent to one of the following: St. Columba's Episcopal Church Building Fund, P.O. Margaret Anita Heise
2001-01-04

Margaret Anita "Sis" (nee Earnshaw) Heise, 92, died on December 23 in Evanston, Illinois.

Mrs. Heise was born in Boston and spent nearly every summer until the last few years at Ocean Point. Her family's cottage, called "Earnscliff" was at the current location of Site to Sea. From 1941 on, she summered at her own cottage. Mrs. Heise recalled spending every summer at Ocean Point, except for one year when infectious polio kept people from traveling and two years when World War II enemy submarines off the coast were considered a threat.

Mrs. Heise's family roots at Ocean Point went back to two great aunts who first summered there in the 1800s. When she was a child, she arrived at the peninsula by steamer. In 1984, Mrs. Heise was Marshall of the annual July 4 Horribles Parade at Ocean Point.

In 1933, she married John Heise of Joliet, Ill., now deceased. He worked for Continental Bank in Chicago and Moody's Investors Service and retired in 1976 as vice president of Dun and Bradstreet.

A longtime resident of Glencoe, Ill., Mrs. Heise was active in Infant Welfare, Arden Shore, and the Garden Club. She was a volunteer at the Evanston Hospital Shop and Glencoe Public Library, and, in her younger years, enjoyed playing golf and tennis, swimming and skating, needlepoint and bridge.

Survivors include a son, Jack, of Glencoe and Ocean Point; two brothers, William of South Pasadena, Calif. and George of Arcadia, Calif.; three grandchildren, William Heise of Romeoville, Ill., Steven Heise of Roswell, Ga., and Kathryn Benninghoff of Carrolton, Tx; and two great grandchildren, Jackson Heise and Lauren Heise.

A memorial service was held in Evanston, Ill. Donations in her memory may be made to the Ocean Point Colony Trust, c/o Tom McGonegal, 38 Foothills Drive, Jericho, Vt. 05465.

Bette F. Helm
2005-02-03

Bette (Fuller) Helm, 79, of Essex, Conn., beloved wife of Dean E. Helm for 56 years, passed away peacefully Monday, January 17 at the Hospice at Middlesex Hospital from kidney failure.

Born in Leonia, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Alexa B. Fuller and Ralph B. Fuller, an Associated Press syndicated cartoonist who created the Oaky Doaks comic strip published in 200 newspapers for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Helm combined a lifelong love of coastal Maine with her passion for art. Her beautiful watercolors of Maine scenes were displayed in galleries, art exhibits, and eagerly anticipated each year by friends and family when printed as Christmas cards.

At Syracuse University, where she earned a BFA in illustration, she met her lifelong partner. After college Bette and Dean were married at All Saints by-the-Sea on Southport Island.

For a time she worked for her father on the Oaky Doaks comic strip and designed greeting cards for Norcross in New York before starting her family. In 1957, they moved their family to Cherry Hill, New Jersey where she became involved with the Cherry Hill Art League Board of Directors. They saw the world in their travels for his job of 37 years with Mobil Oil. They lived in Venezuela in the early 1960s and later made their home together in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, California, Indonesia, Texas, and Louisiana before retiring to Connecticut. But Bettes favorite place always remained the summer cottage on Juniper Point in Boothbay Harbor that had been in her family for more than 80 years.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Fuller of Tappan, N.Y.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Helm is survived by her daughters, Allison Llerena and her husband Mario of Gaithersburg, Md., and Kathy Hanley and husband, Tom, of Marlborough, Conn.; four grandchildren, Kimberly and Michael Llerena and Megan and Sean Hanley; a sister-in-law, Jackie Fuller; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted this summer in Boothbay Harbor. The Robinson Wright-Weymer Funeral Home of Centerbrook is in charge of arrangements. Wayne C. Hendrickson
2001-10-18

Wayne C. Hendrickson, 38, died at his High Meadow Apartments home in Damariscotta on Monday, October 15, after a long illness.

Born January 10, 1963 in Marlboro, Mass., he was a son of Howard A. and Lucille (Martell) Hendrickson.

Mr. Hendrickson came to Damariscotta from Marlboro three years ago. While here, his favorite pastimes were visiting with people and having breakfast at The Breakfast Place in Damariscotta, which he did every morning.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Howard and Patricia Hendrickson of Wiscasset; his mother, Lucille Morin of Marlboro; one son, Carl Hendrickson of Shrewsbury, Mass.; three brothers, Alan Hendrickson of Wiscasset, Bruce Hendrickson of Waldoboro and Michael Hendrickson of Marlboro, Mass.; five sisters, Cheryl Miller of Nobleboro, Mass., Diane Connolly of Framingham, Mass., Lou-Ann Rines of Wiscasset, JoAnn O'Laughlin of South Berwick, and Nan Morin of York; four step-brothers, Randy Johnson, Craig Johnson, and Mark Johnson, all of Wiscasset, and Joey Johnson of Pennsylvania; and a step-sister, Theresa Meehan of Wiscasset.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 Thursday, October 18 at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street in Damariscotta, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 19. He will be laid to rest at the Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Nola P. Herman
2001-01-04

Nola P. Herman of Boothbay Harbor died December 29 after a long illness.

She was a native of Wethersfield, Conn. Mrs. Herman attended Virginia Intermont University and was awarded a degree in Applied Art in 1960. She spent her life supporting the arts and was very active in the Manhattan and Hartford art communities. She worked for the University of Hartford Fine Arts Department.

In 1975 Nola moved to Kansas City, Mo., and worked for the Kansas City Art Institute and the Kansas City Museum. She remained there until her retirement in 1996.

She retired to Boothbay Harbor with her husband, Charles Duane Herman, who predeceased her in 1998.

She is survived by her two sons; Jamey Evans Logan and Micah Clayton Herman, both of Kansas City; and two sisters, Leslie Gangnath of Billings, Mont. and Laurie Barter of Herndon, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be made in Nola's memory to the American Cancer Society or other cancer-related charities.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
