Irene M. Holtzclaw
2000-03-09

Irene Murray Holtzclaw, 72, of Rancho Cordova, California, died Friday, March 3 from an accidental fall in Mendocino, California. She was born on June 23, 1927 in Boothbay Harbor, and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

Mrs. Holtzclaw was a registered nurse for 15 years, at Maine Medical Center, St. Andrews Hospital and in California. In 1958 she married Wilbur Holtzclaw.

She was a member of the Mount Pisgah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Boothbay Harbor, and the San Juan Chapter in Citrus Heights, California. She was an ardent bowler and loved playing Bingo.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Wilbur W. Holtzclaw of Rancho Cordova; one daughter, Debbie of Rancho Cordova; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Colleen Holtzclaw, and grandsons, Eric and Colby, all of Wheatland, Wyoming; locally, an aunt, Hilda May of Boothbay Harbor, and uncle Kenneth Bergquist of Sawyers Island; several nieces and nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 10, at 10 a.m., in the Church of the Valley at Mount Vernon Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, California.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2425 Stocton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

Janet Howard
2001-07-05

Janet Howard, 65, of Wiscasset passed away at her home Saturday, June 30, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Augusta on March 15, 1936, she was the daughter of Robert and Jessie Arlene Nicholas Varnum. She attended schools in Dresden.

After marrying Eugene "Jeep" Howard in 1953, they moved to Boothbay Harbor. She was employed at Cunningham Cleaners and later by St. Andrews Hospital as a Dietary Aide. She retired from St. Andrews but later went to work at the Lincoln Home as a dietary aid and laundress until her illness in 1997.

Mrs. Howard enjoyed Bingo, mackerel fishing, mini golf, and the outdoors. She loved to play Nintendo.

A member of the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor, she will be remembered fondly as having gathered the greens and prepared the wreaths for the traditional "Hanging of the Greens" for the Christmas season.

Mrs. Howard was predeceased by her husband, Eugene "Jeep" Howard in September or 2000; and a brother, Robert Varnum.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lewis of Boothbay and Deltona, Florida; one son, Jeffrey Howard of Wiscasset; one brother, William Varnum of Vassalboro; one sister, Jane Stewart of Glastonbury, Conn.; three grandchildren, Erik Howard of Wiscasset and Troy and Tracy Lewis of Boothbay; three great-grandchildren, Tucker and Talon Lewis, and Xavier Dowing, all of Boothbay; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 5 at 2 p.m. at the Forest Hill cemetery in Dresden. Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate.

Arrangements are made by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Charlotte R. Howard
2004-10-07

Charlotte R. Howard, 93, died Thursday, September 23 at her home in Alna.

A long-time resident of Southport, Mrs. Howard was active in the Southport Methodist Church and many local activities.

She was married to Gordon M. McKenney, who died in 1975, for 44 years, and to Arthur J. Howard, who died in 2002, for 22 years.

There will be a memorial service for Mrs. Howard at the Southport Methodist Church Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to United Methodist Women, Hendricks Hill Road, Southport, ME 04576.

Arthur J. Howard
2002-08-22

Arthur J. Howard, 93, died August 16 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born July 11, 1909 in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of Joseph W.
and Esther Howard.

Mr. Howard graduated from Northeastern University and worked as an engineer for the General Electric Company for 35 years.

He was a Mason for 70 years, a lifetime member of the Lynn Yacht Club, and spent many summers sailing the Maine coast. After his retirement in 1972, he resided for many years in Southport.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte R. Howard, currently of Alna.

Mr. Howard will be buried in Southport and a memorial service will be held at the Southport Methodist Church at a later date.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Pauline L. Howard
2001-03-08

Pauline Lilly Howard died Saturday, March 3 at her home in Boothbay Harbor after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born in Lautenburg, West Prussia, she was the daughter of Bertha (Subulski) and Herman Okonski.

Mrs. Howard fled Germany in 1939 when she was notified she was to be taken into "protective custody" by the Nazi Gestapo. She was able to board an ocean liner in Trieste and travel to Shanghai, China.

Once in Shanghai, she became a courier for an underground resistance group. Her small build and general appearance allowed her to pass as a Eurasian and travel freely in Japanese-occupied areas. She was also fluent in French, German, English and Mandarin Chinese which made her invaluable to the cause.

In 1947 she married her husband, Bill, who was a young Naval Officer stationed in Shanghai and they traveled home to the United States where she taught German at the University of Illinois.

In 1960, Mrs. Howard served as Liaison Officer and interpreter for a National Security Agency operation along the East German and Czechoslovak borders.

From 1963 to 1993 she served as President of Howard Marine Electronics until her illness forced her retirement.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Cdr. William D. Howard, U.S.N. (Ret.); one daughter, Billie Howard-Goldsmith and family of Wilton; two grandsons, Bryan R. Kelley of Five Islands, and Robert H. Leeman and family of Sidney.

She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister who died at the hands of the German Nazis, her mother and father and grandson Shane Joseph Kelley who died in 1984.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Howard's name to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Mona M. Howe
2000-06-01

Mona M. Howe, 90, of Woodstock, Georgia, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died in her sleep on Sunday, May 28 after an extended illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, H.G. "Bob" Howe, also of Woodstock and Boothbay Harbor.

She was born in Waldo, Maine, the oldest daughter of William and Madeleine MacDonald.

Mrs. Howe was active in the Boothbay Region Garden Club and the Wawenock Power Squadron while living in Boothbay Harbor.

While living in Georgia, she was active as a volunteer in several regional hospitals and received numerous awards for her volunteer work and fund-raising efforts.

Mrs. Howe enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and her music.

She is survived by her sister, Georgiana Curto of California; her daughter, Georgia Howe MacRae; Ms. MacRae's son Ian, his wife, Kathy, and their daughter, Montana, of Woodstock, Connecticut; Ms. MacRae's daughter Heather Neal Goff, her husband, Dr. Nathan Goff, and their two children, Lindsay and Cameron, all of Portland; her son, Rory Howe and his wife, Dorinda (Hodgdon) Howe; Rory's three children, Ethan Rory and his wife, Katherine, of Worcester, Mass., Shanna Herrick and her husband, Jason, of Providence, R.I. and their infant daughter, Abby, and Brittany Hubbard of Worcester, Mass. Mrs. Howe is also survived by several nieces and nephews and two step-great-grandchildren.

She will be interred at Evergreen cemetery in Portland and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

Guy B. Howe Jr.
2001-05-24

Guy Butman Howe Jr., 76, died May 14 at Hospice of Palm Beach County, Florida. He had suffered a stroke and died of complications.

Born November 20, 1924 in Winchester, Mass., he was the son of Carolyn Dow Howe and Guy B. Howe of Winchester, Mass. and Andover, Mass. He was also the grandson of Charles P. Dow and Caroline Heal Dow, who were born on Westport Island, and grandson of Frank C. Howe and Lilla Butman Howe of Rockland and Round Pond. His great-grandfather Capt. Butman, ran steam-boats in Rockland.

He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. and graduated from Suffield Academy in Suffield, Conn. He then went to the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. Following graduation, he served in the Merchant Marine until the war ended. He then became an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

In 1946, he and Anita Mudd of Chicago, Illinois were married and lived in Andover, Mass. where Mr. Howe worked at Home Heating Co. established by his father.

He was a member of St. Mathews Lodge of Free Masonry of Andover, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Laurence, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and the Down East Yacht Cub.

Mr. Howe was captain of numerous charter boats between Maine and the Caribbean; including the Good Bye Charlie, the Wanderer owned by the Lovejoys and the A Copy owned by Diangelo Realty Co. He later owned and ran the Calypso in Boothbay Harbor.

Survivors include a brother, Charles P. Howe and his wife Sally of Westport; a daughter, Pamela Parsons and her husband David of Barrington, Illinois; two sons, Bruce Howe and his wife Peggy of Mendon, Mass., and Justin and his wife Nona of Algonquin, Illinois; grandchildren, Sarah, Michael, Melissa and Sean Parsons, Graham and Laura Howe, Lynsy Howe and David Spaulding, Derek and Alyson Howe; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ernestine Bennert.

A memorial service for the immediate family will be held on Westport Island at a later date. A gathering for friends will be held in the future.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were made by the Kraeer Funeral Home and North American Cremation Society of Palm Beach in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Elizabeth T. Huber
2002-09-19

Elizabeth Gamble Thompson Huber, 76, of Cambridge, Md., formerly of Easton, Md., died Friday, September 13 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, after a 35-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Born August 26, 1926 in Philadelphia, Penn., she was the daughter of the late George and Frances Thompson.

After attending public school in Philadelphia, she received her teaching degree from West Chester State Teachers College and then her Master's degree from Columbia University in 1972. She was a learning disabilities specialist for several public school systems in Northern New Jersey. In 1992 she moved to Talbot County and to Cambridge three years ago. For the last 30 years, Mrs. Huber has had a summer home in Boothbay.

Mrs. Huber's husband, Roger Albert Huber whom she married January 17, 1948, died on June 18, 1998.

Survivors include five children, Dr. Lare Huber of Portland, Madge Huber Henning of Oxford, Md., Grant Huber of Annapolis, Md., Evans Huber of Wayland, Mass., and Gamble Foster of Cambridge, Md.; one brother, T. Evans Thompson of King of Prussia, Penn.; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Nelke and two grandchildren, Tonio Henning and Oliver Huber.

Services were held at Trinity Cathedral in Easton, Md. on Monday September 16. Burial was at Oxford cemetery in Oxford, Md.

Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Eastern Shore Chapter, 207 Maryland Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Arrangements were by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, Md.
