Mary Jane Hughes
2004-01-29

Mary Jane Hughes, 68, of Bullhead City, Arizona, passed away early Wednesday, January 21, after a courageous battle against cancer.

Born Mary Jane Webb on September 17, 1935 in Bath, she was "Honey" to family and friends growing up on the Webb family farm in North Edgecomb, Maine.

After proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps, Mary Jane raised six children in the Los Angeles area. She moved to Bullhead City in 1994, working since then for the Fort Mojave Tribe at the AVI Resort and Casino, which brought her much joy.

She could also be found enthusiastically supporting Laughlin High School athletics as she watched grandchildren Brian and Lizzy in their many sports activities.

Mrs. Hughes was dedicated to her family, loyal and loving, feisty, persistent, generous and giving. She enjoyed reading, corresponding, the company of her cats, and being with family and friends. She was very proud of her Maine heritage and her Yankee work ethic and self-suf-ficiency.

She joins her eldest daughter Elizabeth who passed away in 1985, and her parents, Arthur C. and Mary Jane Webb of Maine who predeceased her. Survivors include her children, Michael and wife Jennifer of Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter Rose and husband Victor Arbogast of Laughlin, Nevada, son Robert of Phoenix, Arizona, daughter Mary Chris and husband Matt Bilek of Arvada, Colorado, son Daniel of Anchorage, Alaska; and grandchildren Jimmy, Brian, Elizabeth, Cynthia and Bailey; sisters, Sharon and husband Miles Barter of Boothbay Harbor, and Constance and husband Ira Machon of Charleston, South Carolina; and cousins, nieces and numerous other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Laughlin High School Booster Club, P.O. Box 29992, Laughlin, NV 89029; the American Cancer Society at (800) 227-2345; or to the Congregational Church, Cross Pt. Rd., North Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Alice D. Hulme
2004-08-05

Long-time Boothbay Harbor resident, Alice Davis Hulme, died Thursday, July 29 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick following a short illness. She and her family summered on Capitol Island and Juniper Point for over 50 years.

Mrs. Hulme was born in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania on June 21, 1913 where her ancestors had lived since the Revolution. She attended Ravenhill Academy and Springside School where she excelled in field hockey and tennis.

She worked at the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company until she met and married her husband, Alfred Parsons Hulme. They moved to Bucks County where she taught at the Buckingham Friends School until she began raising her children. The family then moved to Connecticut and lived in West Hartford, Clinton and Madison.

The Hulmes first fell in love with Maine when they took a cottage on Capitol Island and the family returned nearly every summer thereafter, principally on Juniper Point For many years she served as secretary of the Juniper Point Village Improvement Society where she was well known for her tennis prowess, her engaging wit and winning ways at the bridge table.

Mrs. Hulme was predeceased by her husband, Alfred; and her two sons, Lawrence and Alfred P. Jr.

Survivors include her daughter and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Richardson Hulme of Fairfield, Connecticut and Susan Karpman of New York City.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, August 12 at All Saints By-the-Sea Episcopal Church on Southport Island.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the JPVIS House Committee, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575.

Elwood L. Humason
2004-05-13

A memorial service honoring Elwood L. Humason, who died March 6, 2004 in Crystal River, Fla., will be held May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Newcastle/Alna Baptist Church on Route 194 in Alna. The Rev. Richard Newell will officiate.

Hilda M. S. Hume
2004-06-24

Hilda Maude Stover Hume, 95, died at her home in Boothbay Harbor, where she has lived since her marriage to her late husband, Kressel Burton Hume on October 24, 1934.

Born in Boothbay, January 2, 1909, she was a daughter of Alvin and Iva Greenleaf Stover.

She attended Boothbay Grammar School on Barters Island, graduating May 29, 1924. She graduated from Boothbay High School June 4, 1926 and received a Scientific Diploma.

Mrs. Hume held many positions while working for Mildred Reed on Spruce Point, including delivering telegrams. She was also employed at Cod Cove Inn in Southport. Some winters she worked out of state as an aid, during World War II she worked at Bath Iron Works building ships to defeat the Axis. For many years, she sorted and packed fish at the "Freezer."

With her husband, she operated Hume Taxi Service for many years, transporting passengers around the region as well as along the Atlantic corridor from Quebec, Canada to Florida.

After her husband's retirement, they spend many winters in Punta Gorda, Florida and traveled across country to California.

Mrs. Hume would take in boarders who came to the harbor for construction work years ago, and Jennie, her sister, would do the cooking.

Since Mr. Hume's death, she traveled with her companions to the south and divided time spent between Boothbay Harbor and Lennoxville, Quebec.

Mrs. Hume loved her dogs and cats and gardening. She spent a lot of time visiting the local cemeteries. She was famous for her pineapple upside down cake.

This past winter was spent in Clermont, Florida and Quebec.

Mrs. Hume was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Kressel B. Hume; two sisters, Martha Stover Farin, Jennie Stover Giles and Jennie's son Gordon.

Survivors include her companions, Bertin Bernier and Alan Clark; constant and reliable friends, Rose-Marie and Walter Kreppein, Lucy Marcotte, Dr. Dana Webster and the great ladies of St. Andrews Home Health, and several nephews.

A funeral service was held Monday, June 21 at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church with the Reverend Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating.

Donations in Mrs. Hume's memory would gladly be accepted by The Boothbay cemetery District, c/o Richard McDougall, P.O. Box 2, Boothbay, ME 04537, for the care and upkeep of the Boothbay Cemeteries.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Phil Humphrey
2004-04-09

Phil Humphrey, 68, died April 1, 2004 at his home. born in Gray, September 30, 1935, the son of Gerald and Harriet Russell Humphrey, Sr., Mr. Humphrey graduated from Pennell Institute in 1953.

Mr. Humphrey worked as an ironworker for local #496 for over 25 years, retiring as a result of a back injury in 1986. During the 1970s, while still working for local #496, he opened Charlonate Corporation, an ironworking company. He had many sideline entrepreneurial endeavors over his lifetime including Phil Humphrey Tack Company horse equipment; a snowmobile business; a saddle and leather shop; and an overnight cabin business. Mr. Humphrey's overnight cabin business and horse equipment businesses, coupled with his personality, led him to meet and associate with movie stars, country musicians and sports stars including Joan Crawford, Dick Curless, Marty Milner, Glenn Corbett, Pam Tillis, and Richard Petty. Mr. Humphrey even helped with the production of an episode of Route 66, filmed in Poland Springs, by providing them horses. Phil enjoyed hunting, stockcar racing, target shooting, agricultural fairs, and family activities. When grandchildren arrived into his life, they became the focus of his attention. He enjoyed taking them on shopping sprees to Wal-Mart, loved going to their baseball and softball games, and to be present when they showed their animals at the Cumberland Fair. Mr. Humphrey spent his winters in Oklahoma, which suited him well because he was a cowboy at heart.

He married Charlotte Cole who died in 1990.

He is survived by two sons, Lonnie, and his wife, Pam, Humphrey, of New Gloucester, and Nate, and his wife, Beth Humphrey, of Gray; grandchildren Brittany, Danielle and Cody; three brothers;,Buzzy (Gerald), Charlie and Timothy; and sisters Arvilla Lachance and Eleanor Wiston.

A memorial visitation period was held last Sunday, at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. A Remembrance Ceremony took place immediately following the visitation.

Frederick Hunnewell
2003-07-11

Frederick Hunnewell, Sr., passed away July 7, 2003, after a long illness.

He was predeceased by his wife, Irene I. Erickson, and is survived by two sons, John N. Hunnewell, of New Gloucester and Frederick Hunnewell, Jr., of Gray; and two daughters, Diane I. Langlois and Rhonda G. Perkins, both of New Gloucester.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Nicholas Perkins, and is survived by 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Rodney Hunnewell of New Gloucester; two sisters, Gwen Jordan of New Gloucester and Glenys Rosa of Merrimac, NH.

He grew up and spend most of his life in New Gloucester. He worked for the Maine Turnpike Authority, Pineland Center and then was self-employed as an excavator in his own business for the last 30 years.

He will be truly missed by his family, extended family and friends. Fred was the happiest when he was with his family of in his loader or other equipment. He said several days ago that if wealth was measured in family and friends, he was the richest man in the world. And now he has gone to be with his beloved wife, Irene, the rest of the family that are there to greet him and Herb Thompson to give him a dig.

Graveside service was held on Thursday, with Rev. Linda Gard officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home.

Special note: Mr. Hunnewell appreciated his nursing care and thought of them as family.

Deborah S. Hunter
2004-11-18

Deborah Scribner Hunter, 74, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, November 14, at her residence.

She was born in Brunswick on July 7, 1930 and grew up in Topsham with her mother, Doris (Lucretia) Scribner and stepfather, Ray G. Hanson.

In 1948 she graduated from Brunswick High School and attended Gorham State Teachers College. On April 29, 1950 she married Donald T. Hunter.

Mrs. Hunter taught as a substitute teacher in Camden. She was then employed by George Freeman at his Vegetable Stand in Damariscotta. For many years, she was employed as an information specialist at the Damariscotta Region & Information Bureau.

She was on the Board of Directors for the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, a Trustee of Old Walpole Meetinghouse in South Bristol, co-founder of the Dirigo Horse & Pony Club in Edgecomb, member of the Pine Tree Quilters, member of the Wiscasset Community Center and attended the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset.

She enjoyed quilting, camping, raising Maine coon cats, horses, history, genealogy and art in all media, in particular, wall stenciling.

Survivors include her husband, Donald T. Hunter of Wiscasset; one daughter, Mary Ellen Bowers and her husband Frederic of Alna; two sons, David William Hunter and his wife Vicky, and Jeffrey Hunter and his wife LeeAnn all of Wiscasset; two brothers, Albert Hanson and his wife Rachel, and Ray Hanson Jr. and his long-time companion, Joanne Creagan, all of Topsham; eight grandchildren, Sarah Glasser, Charity Kaiser, Jeremy Hunter, Neesha Hunter, Keith Hunter, Jason Hunter, Ryan Hunter and Hannah Hunter; four great-grand-children, Maren Glasser, Logan Kaiser, Madison Kaiser and Keara Hunter; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, at the Wiscasset Community Center, Gardiner Road (Route 27) in Wiscasset.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mid Coast Maine, 45 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Frances S. Hunting
2003-03-13

Frances Stafford Hunting, a summer resident of Bayville for over 60 years, died March 6 in her 96th year.

Born in Brookline, Mass., she was the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Carter) Sutton and was a graduate of Newton High School and Smith College.

Mrs. Hunting was predeceased by her husbands, Alfred H. Stafford and Raymond D. Hunting; and her brother David Sutton and his wife, Bettina.

Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Gilchrist and her husband Barrett of Bayville and Wellesley, Mass.; one son, David Carter Stafford and his wife Charlotte of Bayville and Wayland, Mass.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private family gathering in celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Contributions in Mrs. Hunting's memory may be made to Wayside Hospice, 266 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778.

Richard C. S. Hurst
2000-09-28

Richard Christopher Stancliffe Hurts, 78, of Alna, died on July 27 at Miles Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Kent, England on October 14, 1921, he was the son of Neville and Marjorie Hurst.

Mr. Hurst entered the British Royal Navy at 13 years of age and served in World War II on the HMS Warspite.

In 1948 Mr. Hurst came to America and on June 26 married the late Constance Hitchcock, daughter of Captain Russell Hitchcock. The family lived for many years in Santa Monica, California where he worked as a technical writer and he and his wife owned an antique shop. They returned to Maine in 1985 and lived in Sheepscot.

Mr. Hurst loved to garden and was known for his spring tulips and peonies.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Hurst, his wife Francine, and daughters Talia and Blayne of Granada Hills, California, and Gilbert Hurst of Portland; a daughter, Anne-Kelledy Manson and her husband Andrew of Boylston, Mass.

A celebration of his life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 at St. Andrew's Church in Newcastle with Rev. Steve White officiating.

Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.
