Ernestine E. Hamilton
2005-06-09

Ernestine Edith Hamilton, 97, passed away Friday, May 20, at Cove's Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta. Ernestine was a brave woman who died on her own terms surrounded by her family.

Born April 25, 1908 in Columbia Falls, Maine, she was the third daughter of Maurice and Edith Allen Woodward. Her family moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1920 and she was a graduate of the Boothbay Harbor High School in the Class of 1926 and the Gorham Normal School.

Mrs. Hamilton worked for seven years at the original W. F. Grant Company Department Store in Brunswick and later, for nine years at Goodall Sanford Mills in the burling and mending department where she was the head of the payroll department. When the mill closed she went to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a statistical assistant at the United States Department of Agriculture for 22 years, retiring in 1976. After retirement she returned home to Maine and settled for a short time in Saco. In 1988 she moved to Damariscotta to be closer to her family.

Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the East Washington Heights Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. and the Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Springvale, Maine.

She is predeceased by son, Maurice Storer; daughter-in-law, Elta M. Storer (2001); son-in-law, William Meyers (2004); grandson, Robert R. Storer (1973); sisters, Thelma Woodward, Marguerite Waterman and Phyllis Pinkham.

Survivors include her son, Richard R. Storer Sr. of Damariscotta; daughter, Margaret Myers of Spring Hill, Fla.; brother, Erwin Woodward of Casco; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was held Monday, May 23, at the First Baptist Church of Damariscotta.

Arrangements were under the care and direction of the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Beverly Hanley
2005-04-14

Beverley "Lucille" Hanley, 73, died Wednesday, April 6 at her home in Nobleboro.

Born October 4, 1931 in Damariscotta, she was a daughter of George Oliver and Kathleen Oliver Winchenbach. She grew up in Nobleboro and graduated from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1949. Mrs. Hanley and her family lived in Bremen for many years before moving back to Nobleboro in the early 1980s.

She was a baker and a wonderful cook. She was well known for her whoopee pies, pies, and especially her bread. She cooked at the Irish Pub in Bremen, Twin Village Bar and Grill in Damariscotta, and Sandwiches and Sweets in Wiscasset. She loved to play cards, beano, rug hooking, quilting and painting.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Hanley and his wife Donna of Peterborough, N.H. and Alan Hanley and his wife Kelley of Waldoboro; two daughters, Sherry Pyne and her husband Blair of Bremen and Darleen Hanley of Nobleboro; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. Hanley's life was held Sunday, April 10 at the Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Haney's memory to the American Cancer Society, NE Division, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086; or to Miles Home Health Hospice, Miles Development Office, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.

Arrangements were under the care and direction of the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Dorothy Hansen dies
2005-05-27

Dorothy T. Hansen, formerly of Gray and Brunswick, died Monday, May 23, at her home after a battle with brain cancer.

Dorothy was born on April 25, 1939, in Edmore, Michigan, to the Rev. Dolliver and Mrs. Ruth Thogerson. Most of her young life was spent in Falmouth before moving to West Branch, Iowa, where she attended high school. While Dorothy stayed in the Midwest to earn her degree in music education at Iowa Teachers' College, her family relocated back to Falmouth. It was on one of her visits home that she met her future husband, Hans M. Hansen III. Dorothy and Skip were married in 1960, and made their home in Gray. In 1990, they moved to Brunswick. After her husband died, she moved to Portland.

Dorothy is well-known and loved throughout Southern Maine for her musical gifts and talents. She was the harpist for the Portland Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s, and provided music for numerous weddings, musicals and celebrations. She loved sharing her talent, and had many fine harp students. Her music led her to be involved with many local music groups, clubs and ensembles. She was honored most recently to serve her fellow musicians as President of the Rossini Club.

In addition to her musical career, Dorothy was a music teacher in the Gray-New Gloucester school system for a semester, and also enjoyed working in retail at Jordan Marsh and Macy's, as well as selling jewelry at Fairbanks, Frost and Lowe.

The greatest joy in Dorothy's life, outside of her family, was her faith. A lifelong Christian, Dorothy was a very active member at Emmaus Lutheran Church, where she served the church as Choir Director for more than 25 years. She participated in bible studies, taught Sunday school, served on committees and gave her time freely in any way she could. Dorothy was an example to all around her of how to live her faith.

Dorothy is survived by her mother, Mrs. Ruth Thogerson, of Huxley, Iowa; brother David Thogerson, of Davis, Illinois; brother Mark Thogerson, of Whitehall, Michigan; daughter Heidi Western, of Burlington, Vermont; daughter Vivika DeNegre, of Guilford, CT; son Fritz Hansen, of Westbrook, Maine; seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

A memorial gathering was held on Thursday, May 26, at Wilson Funeral Home, and a memorial service was held at 10 A.M. on Friday, May 27, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 265 Middle Road, Falmouth, with Pastor Robert G. Gustavson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dorothy Hansen Memorial Fund, Emmaus Lutheran Church, 265 Middle Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.

Dorothy B. Hardwick
2005-03-17

Dorothy Barter Hardwick, 80, passed away March 14, 2005 at her home in Boothbay Harbor with her husband at her side.

Born in Boothbay, she grew up and attended local schools, graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School in the Class of 1942.

In 1943 she married her husband, Donald and together they made their home in Boothbay, moving to Boothbay Harbor in 1953.

Mrs. Hardwick was a homemaker all of her life, loving and caring for her children. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and working in her flower gardens. She made afghans, hats, mittens and quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Hardwick joined the Crescent Chapter #54 OES in 1969 in East Boothbay where she was a life-time member. She held and office in the Eastern Star until her illness prevented her from doing so. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Group in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Hardwick is predeceased by her brother, Percy Barter Jr.; sisters, Virginia Blake and Gwendolyn Townsend

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Donald of Boothbay Harbor; sons, Wayne Hardwick and his wife Esther of Limestone, and Dean Hardwick of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Sandra Behringer of Waynesboro, Va., and Joan Pinkham of Boothbay; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchild-ren and two great-great grandchildren; sisters, Geraldine Townsend and Joan Rittall, both of Boothbay; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Mrs. Hardwick's request, there will be no services.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Shriner's Hospital For Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02142-699.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Boothbay.

Pauline E. Hardwick
2003-05-29

Pauline E. Hardwick, 83, died Saturday, May 24at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor after a brief illness.

Born November 18, 1919 in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Harry and Margaret Bernier Matthews.

Mrs. Hardwick was one of the original members of the Boothbay Region Athletic Boosters Club when it was formed in the 1950s. For 29 years she was a custodian at Boothbay Region High School. She worked at Ken Yereance's bakery and most recently at the Hannaford store in Boothbay Harbor where she enjoyed her "deli" friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, LeRoy Hardwick; a son, Roy E. Hardwick; and by three brothers, Wendell, Linwood and Merle Matthews.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Latter of Boothbay; a sister, Madelyn Delano of Wiscasset; five grandchildren, Cathy Latter of Boothbay Harbor, Mrs. Chester (Susan) Sprague of Boothbay, Mickey and Tracy Latter of Boothbay and Scott Hardwick of Boothbay Harbor; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation gathering was held Tuesday May 27 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 28 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Oceanview Cemetery, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Athletic Boosters Club, c/o Cindy Pottle, 5 Oak St., Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Hwy., Edgecomb, ME 04556. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Barbara M. Harght
2005-09-01

Barbara McKown Harght, 79, died Monday, August 22 in Scituate, Mass.

She was born in Boothbay Harbor on July 27, 1926.

She is descended from the McKown family that were among the pre-Revolutionary War settlers in Boothbay and for whom McKown Point and McKown Street are named. She was also descended from the Richards family of East Edgecomb.

Mrs. Harght spent her summers at the family cottage at Ocean Point and later at a family house on the Damariscotta River in East Edgecomb.

A lively woman in her youth, she was an actress, watercolorist, bridge player and writer.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Harght.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane H. Penza of Colts Neck, N.J.; a son, Stephen Walter Harght of Marshfield, Mass.; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Pamela and Jonathan Harght, and Samuel and Christian Penza; and one great-grandchild, Jordan Penza.

Dawn M. Harris
2006-01-12

Dawn Marie Harris, 45, died Monday, January 9 in Boothbay Harbor.

Born February 26, 1960 in Kittery, she was the daughter of Herbert R. Micue, Jr. and Judith Harriman Micue.

Mrs. Harris grew up in Warren and attended local schools. In 1978, she graduated from Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro.

She married Daniel M. Harris and she traveled with her husband while he was in the Coast Guard.

In the early 1990s, she moved to Boothbay Harbor and worked at Shop ’n Save in the deli.

She enjoyed making candy at Putnam’s Candy Kitchen in Rockport, cooking for friends, her cats, and especially time with her children.

Survivors include her father and stepmother, Herbert R. Micue, Jr. and Bonnie Davis of Warren; her mother, Judith Micue of Thomaston; two sons, Samuel Harris of Portland, and Alex Harris of San Diego, Calif; several uncles, aunts and cousins; and special friend, Tony Morrison.

A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at the Warren Masonic Lodge, Route 90 in Warren.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 303, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Boothbay.

Paul V. Hartelius Jr.
2006-03-09

Paul V. Hartelius Jr., 83, of Manahawkin, N.J., passed away Wednesday, March 1 at Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, N.J.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in North Plainfield, N.J., Mr. Hartelius graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1940 and attended Parsons School of Design in New York City, N.Y. for two years before his studies were interrupted by service during World War II where he served in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees from 1942-1945.

Following tours of duty in Alaska and Guam, he resumed his studies at Parsons, graduating in 1947 with a certificate in advertising design.

It was at Parsons that he met Margaret (Marge). In 1947 they were married and moved to Westfield, N.J., where they resided for 35 years before moving to Manahawkin in 1986.

Mr. Hartelius held various positions as a commercial artist before starting a 30-year career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in New York City in 1950. By the time he retired in 1980, he had served as Metropolitan's Art Director for 13 years.

Mr. Hartelius and his wife Marge, also a commercial artist and Parsons graduate, created a freelance art business known as Briarmead Studio in 1970. Together they created and produced over 50 children's books for publishers such as Scholastic, Putnam and Doubleday. They created a popular children's activity magazine called Peanut Butter that was published by Scholastic.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartelius enjoyed world traveling and spend summers in their West Southport cottage since 1965.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Siefken of Cape May Court House, N.J.; one son, Paul V. Hartelius III of Fanwood, N.J.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his wife in 2001; and his brother, Edgar A. Hartelius.

A memorial service was held Saturday, March 4 at the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home. Cremation was private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Shore Art Association Scholarship Fund, 94 Stafford Ave., Manahawkin, NJ 08050.
