Richard M. Haggett
2006-01-12

Richard Merry Haggett, 80, of Stuart, Fla. and Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, January 5 at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart.

Born in Edgecomb in 1925, he was the third son of Ruth Merry Haggett and Harold D. Haggett.

His education was at Lincoln Academy, and the University of Maine. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a mechanical engineer in the honor society of Pi Tau Sigma. He completed a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant in 1946.

His main business career was in industrial and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning, in business with his brother James as Haggett Engineering Company in the Boston, Mass. area. From 1972 to 2002 he was involved in the lodging and real estate business in Vermont, Maine and Florida.

In 1950 he married Ann Keyes Page.

He was predeceased by a brother, John, who died in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Ann of Damariscotta; brother, James of Mashpee, Mass.; one son, Daniel of Framingham, Mass.; a daughter, Barbara Sewall of Damariscotta; and two grandchildren, Jason and Christopher.

There will be no funeral or graveside services. Ashes to the Haggett plot at Highland cemetery on Haggett’s Hill in Edgecomb.

Leon M. Hathorne
2005-06-16

Leon M. Hathorne, 74, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, June 12, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born in Bath, he was a son of Milton and Gladys (Wright) Hathorne.

Mr. Hathorne attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Mullaney. After his discharge from the Navy he was employed at Central Maine Power Company for 34 years.

On August 30, 1957 he married Diane M. Sparks.

He was a member of American Legion Post 54 of Wiscasset and a member of the Wiscasset Rod & Gun Club.

Mr. Hathorne was an avid duck hunter, fisherman and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Hathorne of Wiscasset; three daughters, Holly Mills and her husband Robert of Prospect, Jill Moody of Wiscasset, and Jayne Lewis and her husband Richard of Boothbay Harbor; two sisters, Freda Jones of Woolwich, and Delia Dalton of Wiscasset; one brother-in-law, Frank Sparks Jr. of West Bath; five granddaughters, Shannon, Katie, Abbie and Rebecca Moody all of Wiscasset, and Ashley Lewis of Boothbay Harbor; one great-grandson, Noah Riley Haggett of Wiscasset; several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at Riverside cemetery in Woolwich with Rev. Anne Lovejoy Johnson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wiscasset Ambulance Service, 51 Bath Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578, or St. Philip's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 316, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Dorothy Hathorne
2005-07-07

Dorothy Hathorne of Edgecomb died Saturday, July 2, at the Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born April 17, 1920 in Edgecomb, she was the daughter of Dermont A. and Maude E. Dodge Reed. Upon the death of her mother when she was five, she and her siblings were cared for by her sister Beaulha until Dermont married Bessie Trask two years later. She attended grammar school in Edgecomb, for a time attended Boothbay Region High School, and was a graduate of Wiscasset Academy, class of 1938.

On July 6, 1940, she married Harley Hathorne Jr. and they made their home in Edgecomb, where they resided for almost 65 years.

She worked for many years at the Pine Grove Restaurant where she was a baker and was well known for her pies and rolls.

"Dot." as she was known to her friends, was very active in the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle where she was a member for many years. She enjoyed working on church suppers and bake sales. She served as a deaconess, a member of the women's fellowship, and was active in supporting missionary programs. She also worked on the annual auctions for the Lincoln Home, was a member of the Newcastle-Damariscotta Ladies Club, participated in Red Cross Blood drives and was active in National Cancer Society fund drives.

Mrs. Hathorne was the driving force in a large, close knit family and always had large gatherings for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth P Reed, Frank V. Reed, Clifton A Reed, David A. Reed; and sisters, Ruth E. Reed, Hilda M Hutchins, Beaulha M Lamson and Catherine J. White.

Survivors include her husband Hartley Hathorne Jr. of Edgecomb; a son, Barry Reed Hathorne of Edgecomb and a sister, Frances Bennett, both of Edgecomb; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday, July 5, at the Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Wiscasset Rd, Boothbay. A funeral service was held Wednesday, July 6, at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, with a graveside committal following in Highland Cemetery, on the Dodge Rd. in Edgecomb.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330, or to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 30, Topsham, ME 04806 in Mrs. Hathorne's memory.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Leon M. Hathorne

Ruth Alice Hedberg
2005-10-13

Ruth A. (Jacobson) Hedberg of Reading, Mass., passed away on October 8, 2005 in Brookline, Mass. She was the loving wife of Carl J. Hedberg of Reading, Mass., and daughter of the late Oscar and Alice (Oakdale) Jacobson. She grew up in Milton, Mass. and Boothbay Harbor.

After graduating from Boothbay Region High School in 1959, she moved to Boston to attend Boston University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education. She and her family remained in the Boston area for the rest of her life, but also enjoyed spending summer vacations together in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Hedberg was an accomplished pianist, organist, and accompanist, and served as organist at First Church of Christ, Scientist in Reading, Mass. for 30 years. She also worked as an archival researcher at The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston.

Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Hedberg of Boston, Mass.; one son, Brett M. Hedberg of Reading, Mass.; a brother, Robert E. Jacobson of Boothbay Harbor; and a niece, Dawne Young of Clinton, Conn.; and one nephew, Robert Jacobson of Foxboro, Mass.

A celebration of Mrs. Hedberg’s life will be held on Saturday, October 22 at the Douglass, Edgerley Funeral Home, corner of Woburn and Sanborn Streets in Reading, Mass., at 11:30 am.

Those who wish may make donations in her memory to the Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association, 910 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.

Bette F. Helm
2005-02-03

Bette (Fuller) Helm, 79, of Essex, Conn., beloved wife of Dean E. Helm for 56 years, passed away peacefully Monday, January 17 at the Hospice at Middlesex Hospital from kidney failure.

Born in Leonia, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Alexa B. Fuller and Ralph B. Fuller, an Associated Press syndicated cartoonist who created the Oaky Doaks comic strip published in 200 newspapers for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Helm combined a lifelong love of coastal Maine with her passion for art. Her beautiful watercolors of Maine scenes were displayed in galleries, art exhibits, and eagerly anticipated each year by friends and family when printed as Christmas cards.

At Syracuse University, where she earned a BFA in illustration, she met her lifelong partner. After college Bette and Dean were married at All Saints by-the-Sea on Southport Island.

For a time she worked for her father on the Oaky Doaks comic strip and designed greeting cards for Norcross in New York before starting her family. In 1957, they moved their family to Cherry Hill, New Jersey where she became involved with the Cherry Hill Art League Board of Directors. They saw the world in their travels for his job of 37 years with Mobil Oil. They lived in Venezuela in the early 1960s and later made their home together in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, California, Indonesia, Texas, and Louisiana before retiring to Connecticut. But Bettes favorite place always remained the summer cottage on Juniper Point in Boothbay Harbor that had been in her family for more than 80 years.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Fuller of Tappan, N.Y.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Helm is survived by her daughters, Allison Llerena and her husband Mario of Gaithersburg, Md., and Kathy Hanley and husband, Tom, of Marlborough, Conn.; four grandchildren, Kimberly and Michael Llerena and Megan and Sean Hanley; a sister-in-law, Jackie Fuller; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted this summer in Boothbay Harbor. The Robinson Wright-Weymer Funeral Home of Centerbrook is in charge of arrangements. Ruth Hersey passes away at 87

Ruth Harriet (Davis) Hersey, 87, of New Gloucester, died February 16 at Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.

Mrs. Hersey was born in Tuftonboro, NH, a daughter of Harry and Sarah (Gilman) Davis. She married Robert S. Hersey in 1933, in Tuftonboro; he died in 1978.

She was always a homemaker and was very active in the New Gloucester Bible Church.

She is survived by her son, John, and wife Shelia, Hersey of North Norway; daughters Marylou Shattuck and husband Allen, of Auburn, and Bonnie Hersey of Mechanic Falls; a granddaughter, Kimberly Hersey, of North Norway; a sister, Eleanor Knights, of Exeter, NH; and several nieces nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; two sisters, Beatrice Davis and Mildred Dore; and two brothers, Albert Davis and Arthur Davis.

Visitation was last Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in Lower Gloucester cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 162 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.

Joanne Hesslein, mother of Forest Ranger in Gray
2005-12-30

Joanne Hesslein, 78, died at the Fryeburg Health Care Center on December 20.

Her son, Gregg Hesslein, has been a District Forest Ranger working out of Gray for many years.

She was born on April 22, 1927, in Keene, NH, the daughter of James W. Cuthbert and Gladys R. (Cutler) Cuthbert. She was a graduate of Northfield School and Smith College, with a B.A. in Psychology.

She worked as a social worker in several healthcare facilities, retiring in 1993.

Joanne loved tennis and being with her many friends. She was a master gardener, birdwatcher, Foster Grandparent, and a kind, gentle and giving person. She loved living near the Scarborough Marsh, hiking, mushrooming, canoeing and enjoying most outdoor activities.

Joanne was predeceased by her sister, Natalie Partlan, and son Peter Hesslein. She is survived by three sons, Mark, of Miami, Richard, of Brownfield, Gregg and his wife Jodie, also of Brownfield, and one granddaughter.

Services will be held at Blue Point Congregational Church in Scarborough on January 4 at 10:00 A.M.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Center, 640 Jackson Street, St. Paul, MN 55101-2595.

Juliet H. Hetzel
2005-09-01

Juliet H. Hetzel, 68, of Woolwich, died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 27, after a two-year fight against ovarian cancer.

Born in Charlottesville, Va., she was a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Hammond. Her father was a professor of philosophy and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Science at the University of Virginia.

She graduated from St. Anne's School in Charlottesville and Smith College in the class of 1958, where she majored in English.

In 1957 she was married to her husband Bill. They lived in Con-cord, Mass. for over 35 years, until retiring in 1996 to a new home they built on Montsweag Bay on the Back River in Woolwich.

For many years she taught school, first at St. Anne's School (now known as the Germane Lawrence School) in Arlington Heights, Mass., and later at Concord Academy in Concord, where she taught English to juniors and seniors. After leaving Concord Academy, she continued her academic career as a tutor of students preparing for the SAT and SSAT exams.

Since moving to Maine, she was active with the Bath chapter of the Literacy Volunteers of America and has continued tutoring under its auspices. At the age of 40, Mrs. Hetzel, a life-long lover of horses, acquired her first horse and took up riding with a vengeance. For the next 15 years she participated in combined training events throughout New England and in Georgia. She continued as a dressage rider on her beloved horse Oz until last fall.

Survivors include her husband, William B. Hetzel Jr. of Woolwich; one daughter, Anne Metzger and her husband Rodger of West Simsbury, Conn.; two sons, John Hetzel of Charlottesville, Va., and William B. Hetzel III and his wife, Jennifer Niese of Kennebunk; one sister, Lile H. Deinard of New York, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 27 Pleasant Street, Brunswick. A reception will be held following the service at the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Hetzel's family requested that memorial contributions be made to Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 27 Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, ME 04556. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street in Bath.
