Beatrice G. Johnston
2003-01-17

Greenfield, MA - Beatrice G. (Gleason) Johnston, 82, of 405 Countryside died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born in Bangor, Maine, on February 20, 1920, the daughter of Lawrence and Inez (Grant) Gleason. She graduated from Bangor High School, attended the University of Maine and graduated from Washington State Teachers College.

She had been a resident of Gray, Maine, prior to moving to Greenfield in 1996.

In her earlier years, she was an art teacher in the Bangor-Brewer school system. Her husband, Frederick, was a commander in the Navy and she was active in Naval organizations in the United States and overseas.

She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church.

She enjoyed art, antiques, crafts, reading, and spending time with her family.

Her husband, Frederick Johnston, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Frederick J. and his wife, Virginia, of Middletown, Pa.; a daughter, Jan L. Kaiser and her partner, George N. Maniatty of Greenfield; a brother, Thomas E. Gleason of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren, Jessica Kaiser of Beverly, Mass.; Lincoln Kaiser of Westwood, Mass.; and Erin Johnston of Middletown, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Rita McCutcheon of San Diego, Calif.; and Sue Gleason of Phoenix Arizona and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St John's Catholic Church in Bangor Maine in the spring at a date to be announced. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bangor.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Western/Central Massachusetts, Regional Office, 181 Park Ave., Suite 12, West Springfield, MA 01089.

William Kennedy
William David Kennedy III, 59, of Liberty Avenue, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening at 7:30 P.M., July 28, 2004, after a brief illness.

He was born December 24, 1944, in Rochester, NY, a son of William David Kennedy, Jr., and Lorraine Smith.

Bill was a member of Windham Assembly of God Church.

He worked at the Southworth Machine Co. for 14 years, before owning and operating his own scrap metal business for the past ten years.

On October 28, 1983, he married Patricia Meserve.

He was a devoted, loving husband and father. One of his favorite things to do was to go camping with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife's daughter, Sherry, and his mother, Lorraine.

Bill is survived by his wife, of Gray; nine children, Juanita Dube, of Maine, Adam, of South Portland, Jessica Fields, of Brunswick, Marie, of Gorham, Jamie, Nick, Billi-Jo, Garrett and Joey, all living at home; three stepchildren, Mary Kay Sanborn, of Windham, Barbara Dioniso, of Windham, and Kenny Meserve, of North Carolina; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his father; three sisters and their families, Judy and David Cousins, of Lewiston, their son and daughter, Glen Sutton, of New York, and Deborah Kennedy, of Gray, as well as many close friends.

A funeral service was held at Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham, last Sunday. Private burial will be in Gray Village Cemetery.

Warren S. Cole
Warren Cole, 87, died April 30, 2004.

He was born January 30, 1917, in Gray, a son of Hewitt and Jennie Cole. He graduated from Pennell Institute in 1934 and Bates College in 1938.

Mr. Cole taught at Garland High School for two years prior to being inducted into the Army after Pearl Harbor. He was in the 1st Convoy to the south Pacific inWorld War II, attending officers' candidate school in New Caledonia. Mr. Cole served as a Lieutenant in charge of Litter Platoons in Combat Service on Guadalcanal (Litter Platoons were frontline soldiers who transported the wounded and the dead.) He returned to the U.S. in 1944, and was assigned as Adjutant in the U.S. Army General Dispensary, Chicago Headquarters, 6th Service Command, where Mr. Cole achieved the rank of Captain. After his service to his country, he returned to help his father on the family dairy farm. In July of 1952, he and other family members founded Cole Farms Restaurant, in Gray.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Norman Cole; a sister, Ellen McCann; and a foster brother, Harland McPherson.

Surviving is a sister, Merilyn Pollard, and four nephews, Gary, David, Jeffrey and Bradley Pollard, all of Gray.

At Mr. Cole's request, there will be no service.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Walter Lewis Foster
Walter Lewis Foster, 80, passed away October 4, 2003, at his home in Gray.

He was born in Concord, Mass., November 1, 1922.

Survived by wife, Shirley Bartlett-Foster, two daughters, Sheryl Griffin and husband Ken of New Gloucester and Debra Chase and husband, Richard of Gray; one son, Alan Foster of Florida; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son, Dwight Madden.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Waldron Frank Ashley Sr.
Waldron Frank Ashley Sr., 83, died Sunday (10/11/98) at a Windham nursing home. He was born in Flagstaff, ME on September 7, 1915, the son of Frank Waldron and Annie Ellen Wahl Ashley at graduated from local schools.

Mr. Waldron Ashley was a self-employed Master Electrician based in Cumberland. He served his country during W.W.II as a Fireman 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy. He received the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. During the war in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the United States Coast Guard Reserves. Mr. Ashley belonged to the Knights of Pythias, loved working, cribbage, and country music. He was a longtime resident of Bolster Heights Nursing home in Auburn.

Predeceased are his wife of 43 years Gertrude Nellie Tibbetts Ashley who died in 1986 and two brothers; Cleo Ashley and Harold Ashley.

Surviving are three sons; Dr. Marshall D. Ashley of Dominican Republic, Mark P. Ashley of Gray, Waldron F. Ashley Jr. of Vernon, CT. Three daughters; Maureen C. Arsenault of Ellsworth, Marie E. Rand of Spokane, WA and Gertrude E. (Trudy) Foster of Gray, 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 P.M. at the First Congregational Christian Church of New Gloucester. Pastors Nicholas and Mary Angela Davis will officiate. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home in Gray.

Virginia Bailey, mother of James Gillies
Virginia Toole Gillies Bailey, 95, of 25 Thornton Way, formerly of Bath, died February 8, 2001 at The Hawthorne House in Freeport.

She was the mother of James Gillies, formerly of Gray and now of Bath.

Mrs. Bailey was born January 16, 1906, in New Haven, Connecticut, the daughter of Edward Aloysius and Marie Russell (Dillon) Toole. She was a graduate of New Haven schools and the Harcum School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She attended Barnard College in New York City.

She married James A. Gillies in 1931, and moved to Bath when Mr. Gillies became manager of the Bath Box Company, a family business. Mr. Gillies died in 1963. In 1965, Mrs. Gillies moved from the family home in Bath to South Freeport. For many years she enjoyed the role of house parent in several New England woman's colleges and boarding schools.

In 1980, she married Boyd Langdon Bailey. They resided in South Harpswell until Mr. Bailey's death in 1986.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the Bath Memorial Hospital. She was past president of the Bath Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where serving as an Auxiliary fund-raiser she was instrumental in developing and promoting the popular Bath Ship Plates collection. She was a member of the Board of the Pine Tree Society for Handicapped Children, past president of the Bath Chapter of the Infantile Paralysis Association, and the first President of the Garden Club. She also was a member and past president of the Junior League of Bath. She served as purchasing chair for the Junior League, which equipped the kitchen and nursery of Bath Memorial Hospital. With Mr. Gillies she was a member of the Maine Horse Association of which his father was a founder. Mrs. Bailey was a Friend of Bowdoin College, a life member of the Maine Maritime Museum, and a member of the Portland Museum of Art. She belonged to the Freeport Women's Club, the Harpswell Kings Daughters and both the Bath and the Freeport Historical Societies. She was a volunteer at Mid Coast Hospital for many years and a member os St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bath and the St. Charles Catholic Church in Brunswick.

She is survived by four sons, Bruce James Gillies of Portland, James Archibald Gillies III and his wife Susan of North Bath and formerly of Gray, Edward Dillon Gillies and his wife Paula of Bethel, Gordon Mark Gillies and his wife Mary of Hebron, one daughter Mary Virginia Leonard and her husband Michael of Machias, thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, February 17, 2001, at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, Route 88, Falmouth. A reception will follow at Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way, Brunswick. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, in the spring. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Capital Campaign, Midcoast Chapter, American Red Cross, 9 Bank Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.

Violet Gould
Violet R. Gould, 73, who lived in Gray for 20 years, died June 1, 2005 at Central Maine Medical Center, where she had been a patient for 3 months.

She was born in Milo on July 23, 1931, the daughter of Stewart and Erma Huzzy Ross. Shortly after her birth, her parents moved to Plainsville, CT. Violet attended local schools and was a 1950 graduate of MCI.

In December of 1952, she married Frank Gould in Pittsfield. They made their home in Pittsfield before relocating to Gray.

During her years in Gray, Violet worked as a CNA at Pineland Hospital in Pownal for 15 years, retiring in 1996.

Following their retirement, Violet and her husband moved to Turner.

She enjoyed crafts, knitting and crocheting afghans and making clothing for dolls.

She is survived by her husband of Turner; two sons, Dan Gould of Wilton and Frank D. Gould of Roxboro, NC; a daughter, Susan Hobgood and her husband Keith, of Roxboro, NC; a brother, Roger Ross and his wife Ramona, of Pittsfield; two sisters, Nancy Cameron and her husband Donald, of Newcastle, and Barbara Wallensack and her husband Jack, of Amherst, MA; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, David Ross.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 A.M. at Calvary Baptist Church, in Turner. Visiting hours are Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Finley Funeral Home, 15 Church Street, Livermore Falls. Interment will be at Turner Village Cemetery in Turner.
