Beatrice G. Johnston
2003-01-17

Greenfield, MA - Beatrice G. (Gleason) Johnston, 82, of 405 Countryside died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born in Bangor, Maine, on February 20, 1920, the daughter of Lawrence and Inez (Grant) Gleason. She graduated from Bangor High School, attended the University of Maine and graduated from Washington State Teachers College.

She had been a resident of Gray, Maine, prior to moving to Greenfield in 1996.

In her earlier years, she was an art teacher in the Bangor-Brewer school system. Her husband, Frederick, was a commander in the Navy and she was active in Naval organizations in the United States and overseas.

She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church.

She enjoyed art, antiques, crafts, reading, and spending time with her family.

Her husband, Frederick Johnston, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Frederick J. and his wife, Virginia, of Middletown, Pa.; a daughter, Jan L. Kaiser and her partner, George N. Maniatty of Greenfield; a brother, Thomas E. Gleason of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren, Jessica Kaiser of Beverly, Mass.; Lincoln Kaiser of Westwood, Mass.; and Erin Johnston of Middletown, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Rita McCutcheon of San Diego, Calif.; and Sue Gleason of Phoenix Arizona and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St John's Catholic Church in Bangor Maine in the spring at a date to be announced. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant cemetery in Bangor.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Western/Central Massachusetts, Regional Office, 181 Park Ave., Suite 12, West Springfield, MA 01089.

Randy A. James
2003-01-16

Randy Alan James, 43, of Westport Island died suddenly Friday, January 10 at his residence.

Born February 25, 1958 in Damariscotta, he was the son of Franklin T. James Sr. and Kathleen J. (Grady) James.

He was a 1976 graduate of Wiscasset High School and attended the University of Maine in Farmington for several years. He moved to Iowa for many years where he was employed as an iron worker.

In 1985, Mr. James moved back to Wiscasset where he was employed as an iron worker and marine harvester.

He volunteered as a Little League baseball coach and umpire. He was a sports enthusiast, especially baseball and basketball. He enjoyed playing guitar, cookouts, camping, horse racing and animals, especially his 18-year-old cat, Shieba.

He was predeceased by his father, Franklin T. James Sr., in 1991.

Survivors include his mother, Kathleen J. Myers and her husband, Arthur L. Myers, of Inverness, Florida; his son, Andrew James of Oklahoma; his daughter, Amanda James of Oklahoma; a long-time friend and companion, June Louise Tibbetts of Westport; six brothers, Tim James and his wife, Sue, of Wiscasset, Ernie James and his wife, Martha, of Cornville, Larry James of Eliot, Skip James and his wife, Carol, of Wiscasset, Grady James and his wife, Jennifer, of Georgia, Donny James and his wife, Margaret, of Wiscasset; one sister, Angie Maitland and her husband, Jeff, of Winthrop; two stepbrothers, Arthur Myers II of Solon and Mark Myers and his wife, Vicki, of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, January 15 at the Church of the Nazarene in Wiscasset. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery in Dresden in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to benefit his children, Andrew and Amanda, in care of Franklin T. James Jr., 438 Willow Lane, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

George A. Jaynes
2003-03-13

George A. Jaynes, 85, died March 5, at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. Prior to moving to Maine, he was a resident of Larchmont, N.Y for 55 years and a long-time summer resident of Edgecomb.

Mr. Jaynes was born July 16, 1917 in South Salem, N.Y., and was a graduate of Katonah High School. He received a bachelor's degree from New York University and a master's degree from Columbia University.

He was senior vice president of the YMCA of Greater New York, retiring in 1983. He held several other positions in the YMCA prior to this. He also was an agent for Nationwide Insurance.

Mr. Jaynes was a member of The Larchmont Avenue Presbyterian Church where he served as president of the Senior Men's Club. He was acting president of the Thomas Paine Society in New Rochelle and was a member of the Men's Garden Club of Westchester County.

His wife, Doris A. Jaynes, died in 2001.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen J. Tiger and her husband Richard of Woolwich, and Jan A. Jaynes and her husband Joseph Knoblock of Alexandria, Va.; one granddaughter, Kimberly Pierson and her husband Kevin; one grandson, Christopher Tiger and his wife Courtney; and great-grandchildren, twins Tyler and Katie Pierson, Pierson Tiger and Laurel Tiger.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, Camp Scholarship Program (George A. Jaynes), Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Stanley E. Jones
2003-02-27

Stanley E. (Jake) Jones, 75, of Wiscasset died Thursday, February 20 at Maine Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta, after a long illness.

Born September 16, 1927 on Westport Island, he was the son of Horace Sr. and Caroline Jones. He attended Westport and Wiscasset schools.

Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Army before working as a shipfitter for many years at BIW and also as a worm digger.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Horace Jones Jr. and Carroll Jones; and one great-grandchild, Ethan Hunter.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Jones of Westport Island and Roger Jones of Wiscasset; three daughters, Mrs. John (Dianne) Chapman of Dresden, Mrs. Robert (Gayna) Avery of Jefferson and Mrs. Barry (Lynnette) Miete of Alna; two sisters, Beatrice Shea and Bertha Jones, both of Wiscasset; two brothers, Manley Jones of Hampstead, N.H. and Clark Jones of Wiscasset; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At the request of Mr. Jones, there will be no visiting hours.

Spring burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery.

Arlene C. Jones
2003-12-12

Arlene Catherine Jones, 75, of Yarmouth Road in Gray, died on December 4 at Maine Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.

She was a daughter of Harry and Dora Kough, born on Oct. 16, 1928 in Steelton, PA.

She married James Richard Jones, Ph.D., on Feb. 5, 1950, and raised four daughters in Lancaster, PA.

While her daughters were young, she actively volunteered in the PT A, served as a volunteer in a local hospital and was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

As her children grew, she became employed by Miese's Candy Store, where she was promoted to store manager.

In 1996, she moved to Gray and volunteered for PROP's Foster Grandparent Program, serving at the Gray-New Gloucester Middle School and Memorial Elementary School, and she regularly volunteered at the Soup Kitchen in Portland and for Project Linus. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Portland.

She was predeceased by her husband and by her daughter, JoAnn Buckalew, of Phoenix, AZ, by her grandson, James Miller, of New Albany, PA, and by her brother, Harry Kough, Jr. of Harrisburg, PA.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Main of Gray, Susan Miller of New Albany, PA, and Kimberly Rowley of Portland; a sister, Eleanor Kough of New Albany, PA; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held last Tuesday at First Lutheran. Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery in Harrisburg, PA, at the convenience of the family.

Maxim J. Jacques Jr.
2004-02-19

Maxim J. Jacques Jr., 61, of Dresden died Sunday, February 15 at his residence.

Born in Augusta on July 16, 1942, he was the son of Maxim J. Sr. and Cecile A. (Lettre) Jacques.

He attended Augusta schools and was employed at Value House for many years and later as a salesman at Suburban Propane in Augusta. He owned and operated M & S Country Cycles in Windsor and later Jacques & Jacques Building Contractors in Richmond until 1990. On October 6, 1996 he married Paula Moody.

Mr. Jacques was an active member of a ham radio association and home Bible study class. He earned his ministry degree on-line in 2003.

He enjoyed spending time with family, grandchildren, his dog Moses, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Paula J. Jacques of Dresden; two sons, Michael J. Jacques and his wife Jennifer of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Steven R. Jacques and his wife Belinda of Richwood, West Virginia; one daughter Sue-Ann Brann and her husband Terry of Belgrade; two stepdaughters, Debra Moody and Tracy Moody-Ewing both of New York; one sister, Sandra J. Lamothe and her husband George of Vassalboro; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Attn. Kathryn Libby, P.O. Box 521, Skowhegan, ME 04976. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Jean M.H. Johnson
2004-03-11

Jean Marie Hooper Johnson, 36, of Lexington, South Carolina, passed away Monday, March 8.

Born in Warwick, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of Albert Henry Hooper Jr. and wife Cheryl of Chesapeake, Va., and mother, Deborah J. Brawn and husband Charles of Wiscasset.

She was a loving and devoted mother to her children. She was a very active and outgoing person; she loved flowers, traveling and antiques.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Albert H. Hooper Sr. and Elizabeth A. Hooper.

Besides her parents, she is survived by three children, Christopher Johnson Jr., Nathalie Johnson and Joseph Johnson, all of Lexington, S.C.; her children's father, Christopher Johnson Sr. of Georgia; one brother, Albert H. Hooper, III and wife Jennifer of Keller, Texas; numerous family and friends from Rhode Island and Maine.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 11 at Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Great Bridge chapel, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322 by Rev. Jerry Mills. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Virginia Chapter, 2101 Executive Drive, Box 21, Hampton, VA 23666-2404.

Bertha M. Jones
2004-03-18

Bertha "Bert" May Jones, 83, of Wiscasset, died Saturday, March 13, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born on Westport Island on February 25, 1921, she was the daughter of Horace L. Sr. and Carolyn (Falcon) Jones.

Ms. Jones attended Westport Island schools, and was employed at Bath Iron Works during World War II. She moved to Massachusetts and was employed at a shoe shop in Boston. In the early 1960s she moved back to Wiscasset to care for her parents. For a time, she was employed at a shoe shop in Norway.

Ms. Jones then dedicated her life to being a foster mother, taking care of over 40 foster children up until her passing. In Wiscasset there is a bulletin board which reads, "God Took One of His Angels, God Bless Bertha Jones."

Ms. Jones enjoyed cooking and was well known for her donuts and apple pie She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and socializing.

Survivors include four extremely close foster children, Thomas Jones David Maines and Linda Mansfield, all of Wiscasset and Lois Leask of Woolwich; two brothers, Manley Jones of Plaistow, N.H., and Wiscasset, and Clark Jones of Wiscasset; one sister, Beatrice Shea and one granddaughter, Tanisha Mansfield, both of Wiscasset; many foster children and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset on Saturday, May 22 at 11 a.m.. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite
