Esther G. Kuch, 75
1999-07-16

Esther G. Kuch died Friday at a Portland Hospital.

She was born in 1923, the daughter of Leroy and Bessie Burns Libby, and she graduated from Pennell Institute in 1941.

Mrs. Kuch was an LPN who worked at the Westbrook Community Hospital for eleven years. She lived in Cocoa, Florida for thirteen years, having lived in Gray the rest of her life. She married Charles F. Kuch in 1948. Mrs. Kuch was a member of the First Congregational Church of Gray.

Her husband died in 1958.

Surviving are longtime companion, Donald Curtis, of Gray; four nieces, Patricia Barter, of Gray, Diane Tarr, of Atlanta, Georgia, Constance Hall, of Gray, and Jean Webb, of New Gloucester; a nephew, Lawrence L. Libby of Mt. Vernon, WA; and three step-granddaughters; Carol West, Cathy Grannell, and Lori Skilling all of Gray.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday, July 17, at the First Congregational Church of Gray. Pastor Douglas Hedstrom will officiate. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Gray, P.O. Box 155, and the Gray Library, P.O. Box 258, Gray, ME 04039.

Vilho V. Kyllonen
1999-07-29

NORWAY - Vilho V. Kyllonen, 82, of Oxford died Friday, July 23, 1999, at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.

He was born in South Paris on June 29, 1917, the son of Laurie and Elsa Harvienen Kyllonen. He attended Paris schools.

He married Ruth Schilling on July 22, 1955.

Mr. Kyllonen was a farmer, woodsman, and also worked for the Canadian National Railroad retiring in 1969.

He loved to fish and hunt.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Oxford; a son, Richard and special friend, Jessica, both of Oxford; a sister, Ulga Waterman, of Eliot; a step grandson, Shaun and granddaughter, Andrea, both of Bryant Pond and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

At the request of the family there are no services scheduled at this time.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Oxford Fire and Rescue Unit, P.O. Box 273 Oxford, ME 04270. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Herbert D. Kynor Jr.
1999-07-08

Herbert Dailey Kynor Jr., 73, of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, died Monday, June 28 in the Thaeler Health Center, at the Moravian Hall Square Retirement Community in Nazareth. He was a resident of Phillipsburg, New Jersey for many years before moving to Nazareth in 1998. He also summered in West Boothbay Harbor and Southport for over 40 years.

Born January 27, 1926, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Herbert D. Jr. and Madelene Taws Kynor. His father was a mining engineer.

Mr. Kynor grew up in the coal regions of Pennsylvania and attended the Mining and Mechanical Institute in Freeland, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1943 near the top of his class. In 1947 he graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While in prep school and college, as he continued to develop a strong interest in photography that began as a child, he served as the photo editor of the yearbook and several campus newspapers and also tried his hand at making motion pictures.

After graduation from Lehigh, he went to work for Ingersoll-Rand Company at the Phillipsburg and Washington, New Jersey offices. He worked in the advertising department of Ingersoll-Rand for 40 years. During his career at Ingersoll he was involved in all phases of the production of advertising materials for Ingersoll's pneumatic tools.

Throughout his adult life, Mr. Kynor's interest in photography continued. He worked for a number of years as a professional photographer, shooting weddings and marketing photos. However, his true love was photographing the scenic regions of Northern New England, particularly lighthouses along the Maine coast. His photography was known for showing his ``eye" for effective composition and attention to detail, and he shot a number of award-winning photographs that were published in Compressed Air Magazine and used for national advertisements.

Mr. Kynor was a member of the Phi Gama Delta Society, and the Purple Legionnaire at Lehigh University, honorary office of the chapter of Beta Chi.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Nancy Bouton Kynor; one son, David Bouton Kynor, and one grandson, Ryan Dailey Kynor, both of South Strafford, Vermont; and one sister, Edith Moore Sprouse of Alexandria, Virginia.

Services were held at the Newbaker Funeral Home in Blairstown, New Jersey on June 30, with burial following in the Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Blairstown.

Maureen D. Keller
1999-11-25

Dr. Maureen D. Keller, 45, of Newcastle, died Wednesday, November 17 in Portland.

She was a daughter of A. Emmet and Kathleen McIntire Logue, the only sister of seven brothers. She grew up in Scituate, Mass.

On October 13, 1979, she married Thomas E. Keller in Scituate. They moved to Maine and had lived here ever since.

Dr. Keller received a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Rhode Island in 1976. She received a master's degree in oceanography from the University of Maine in 1979, and became employed by Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. In 1998 she received a Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of Maine.

She was a marine scientist at Bigelow Laboratory and was knowledgeable in the fields of ecology and physiology of marine phytoplankton. She was well-known for growing phytoplankton, identifying phytoplankton species in nature, and her work on the production of sulfur compounds by algae. Most recently she worked on the ecology of the toxic red tide organism, Alexandrium, in the Gulf of Maine, and the brown tide in the Long Island bays. She participated on many research cruises in the Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Maine and Penobscot Bay.

Her work was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, Sea Grant, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, among others. She published more than 35 scientific papers and in 1995 and 1996 served on the interim administrative team at Bigelow.

Dr. Keller was an advocate of teaching science and marine research to students of all ages. She sponsored undergraduate student interns who worked in her lab and initiated and ran the annual program that brings 16 high school students from across Maine to the lab for an intensive one-week course in marine science.

She organized the Maine/New Hampshire regional competition of the first National Ocean Science Bowl, which is now an annual academic competition first held at the University of New England in 1998. She was also a lecturer at the University of New England, where she held an adjunct faculty appointment.

Dr. Keller entertained and cooked, was a flower and perennial gardener, and a small-scale farmer.

Surviving are her husband of Newcastle; her children, Kathleen Elizabeth and Eben Thomas Keller of Newcastle; her parents; and six brothers, Emmet of Hingham, Mass., Lawrence of Boca Raton, Florida, James of Norwell, Mass., Edward of Stetson, Martin of Braintree, Mass, and Richard Logue of Scituate, Mass.

A funeral service was held on Monday, November 22 at Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. A reception followed at the Back Street Landing Restaurant. A celebration of Dr. Keller's professional life and scientific career will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 3, at Bigelow Laboratory, West Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Josephine Kendall
1999-10-21

WEST BETHEL - Josephine (Lowell) Kendall, 88, of West Bethel, died Thursday, October 14, 1999 at West Paris, where she had been a resident of Ledgeview Living Center.

Mrs. Kendall was born December 18, 1910, the daughter of the late Hazen B. and Margaret (Lowe) Lowell.

She attended West Bethel schools.

Mrs. Kendall married Clayton E. Kendall in 1925, and they lived in West Bethel their entire married lives.

Clayton passed away, January 23, 1993.

She continued to live in their home until February, 1998, after which she resided at Ledgeview Living Center.

Mrs. Kendall was a homemaker and also served for over 30 years asbookkeeper and assistant treasurer of Kendall Dowel Mill, Inc., founded in 1947 by her late husband and their oldest son, Maurice. The business was sold in 1983.

She attended the West Bethel Union Church, was a member of Purity Chapter, #102, O.E.S., Bethel, and for over half a century a member of Pleasant Valley Grange #136, of West Bethel.

She is survived by two sons, Marvin and his wife, Joanne, of Lewiston, and Ronald and his wife, Marguerite, of Bethel; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Kendall, of Bethel; a brother, Edward Lowell, and his wife, Doris, of New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Arlene D. Lowell, also of Bethel; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kendall was predeceased by two sons, Maurice, and Lawrence; three brothers, Lawrence, Linwood, and Lloyd Lowell and a sister, Katherine Dupee.

Funeral services were held at the West Bethel Union Church, Sunday, October 17 with Interment in the Pine Grove Cemetery, West Bethel.

Donations in her memory may be made to the West Bethel Union Church, P.O. Box 42, W. Bethel, ME 04286.

Arrangements were under the care of the Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel.

Mrs. Frances Kennagh
1999-10-21

NORWAY - Frances Kennagh, 80, of South Paris died Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

She was born in Bemis on August 22, 1919, the daughter of Charles and Vira McAllister Murphy.

She attended King Hill schools and graduated from South Paris High School.

Mrs. Kennagh had worked for Wilner Wood Products, Pickle Shop, local shoe shops, and she was a homemaker. She has lived in the South Paris area most of her life.

She married Kenneth Kennagh on October 8, 1936, and he died on December 26, 1994.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne, of Waterford, and Richard, of South Paris; a brother, Edwin Murphy, of Oxford; four sisters, Madelyn Pratt and Linda Richards both of Norway, Doris Roy of Waterford, and Beverly Smith of South Paris; 12 grandchildren, Laurie Corson, Lisa Parsons, Bethany Webster, Timothy Kennagh, Troy Kennagh, Penny Jackson, Cindy Dustin, Debbie Bonney, George Murch Jr., Penny Mann, Caroline Brown, and Gary Wadsworth and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Duane, and two sisters, Kathleen Burke and Marguerite Richardson.

Graveside services were held at on Saturday, October 16, at the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris with the Rev. Donald McAllister officiating.

Donations in Mrs. Kennagh's memory may be made to the Lewiston-Auburn Kidney Center 710 Main St., Lewiston, Maine 04240.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

Virginia P. Kent
1999-10-07

Virginia Prescott Kent, 80, a retired librarian at the Waltham (Mass.) Public Library, and a former resident of the Isle of Springs, died Saturday, September 25 at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation in North Conway, New Hampshire.

Born in Newton, she had lived there for 79 years. She graduated from Simmons College with a B.A. in Library Science. She had been a librarian for the city of Waltham from 1944 until her retirement in 1969. She was a former member of the Eliot House in Newton and a longtime member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Newtonville.

Daughter of the late Everett E. and Mary (Wilder) Kent, she was the sister of the late Rachel Kent and Francis Kent. She is survived by three grandnieces. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, October 9 at 10 a.m. in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Centre St., Newton Corner, Mass. Internment will follow at Pine Grove cemetery in Leicester, Mass.

William I. Kierstead
1999-04-29

William Irving Kierstead, 83, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, April 25 at his home.

He grew up in Rockland, Mass., the son of Ashton and Ruth Kierstead and graduated from Rockland High School in 1933. In 1937 he received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maine in Orono. Mr. Kierstead did graduate work at MIT.

Upon graduation he was employed by International Paper in Jay. In 1941 he went to work for Central Maine Power Co. at the Mason Steam Plant in Wiscasset. He served as watch engineer until 1955 when he became superintendent of the plant. He retired from the plant in 1970 and became a consulting engineer for CMP until he retired in 1975.

On September 6, 1941 he married Ruth Ladd in Milo.

He enjoyed golfing and bowling.

Mr. Kierstead was a past master and 50-year member of Wiscasset Masonic Lodge AF & AM #3, a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and an active member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, where he was recently honored as a long time trustee and treasurer. He was a member of the Wiscasset Fire Society and was serving as its current treasurer.

Surviving besides his wife of 57 years of Wiscasset, is a sister, Jean Amaya of Shelby, North Carolina; a brother, Robert L. Kierstead of West Roxbury, Mass.; a son-in-law, Remon Lapid and daughter-in-law, Wendy Kierstead; three grandchildren, Laurie Kierstead Skalsky of Tucson, Arizona; Jessica B. Lapid of Chatham, New Jersey and Matthew A. Kierstead of San Diego, California; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Audrey Kierstead, both of San Diego, Calif.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard Ashton Kierstead in 1989, and a daughter, Lois Kierstead in 1998.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 21 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset.
