Bernard Clinton Kaler, Jr.
2000-04-06

Bernard Clinton Kaler, Jr., 67, died April 4 at his home in Back Cove of Waldoboro following a long-term illness. He was the husband of Joyce Wadsworth Kaler whom he married Feb. 14, 1954. Bernard was born Jan. 30, 1933 in Rockland, the son and only child of Bernard and Adelaid Lervy Kaler, Sr.

He graduated from Rockland High School in 1951 and from Wentworth in 1954 where he studied architecture. He enlisted in the Navy and studied electronics. He was assigned to the USS Steinecker and traveled to many parts of the world.

For years he operated a television repair business, meeting and making friends everywhere he went. During this time, he was a member of the Rotary Club. His generosity and the times forced him to close his one-man business. From there he was employed at VAST (Vocaline Air Sea Technology), Lincoln Canoe and most recently in charge of maintenance of the Sproul Block where he continued to win the hearts of new friends.

He was a member of the Blue Fins Diving Club for a number of years and enjoyed diving with his wife as well. He also had a passion for boats, whether it was “going for a spin’’ or “adopting” some abandoned hull and trying to breathe life into it again for himself or for others. Building or rebuilding, there was always one in the dooryard or in the cellar in any case. Bernard also built model rockets, radio controlled airplanes and loved to work on his friends’ model trains.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of Waldoboro, daughters Linda Kaler of Waldoboro and Barbara Ames and her husband Ted of Louisiana; grandsons Christopher Harlow of Waldoboro, Nicholas Stahl of Georgia and Matthew Ames of Louisiana; mother-in-law Evelyn Wadsworth of Greene; sisters and brothers he “inherited” through marriage, Kenneth Wadsworth, Ethel Page, Betty Simmons and Kathy Hilliard. He dearly loved them all.

As per his wish, there will be no service. His desire was only to be remembered fondly, which will be easily done. The best way to honor him is to share a special moment with someone in need. A heartfelt thanks to the many family members and friends who have supported our family in many ways through this long-term illness. You are too numerous to list separately, but are known in our hearts.

Arrangements by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
