Helen H. Kelsey
2000-10-26

Helen H. Kelsey, 84, Newcastle, died in her home Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22. A daughter of Willis A. and Caroline (Blaisdell) Gilbert, she was born in Bristol, Sept. 4, 1916.

She was graduated from Bristol High in the class of 1935 and later that year married Norman Kelsey, moving to So. Bristol.

Helen did volunteer patient therapy for the Red Cross at the State Hospital for five years. She later worked as a patient volunteer at Miles Hospital, as well as working on the BloodMobile. A member of the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle.

She served as President of the Women’s Fellowship and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a life member of the Pagonia Chapter #161 O.E.S., in So. Bristol and a past member of the Grange and Pocahontas.

She worked as the bookkeeper for her husbands mason business all of her married life and was the So. Bristol Town clerk for fifteen years, prior to moving here in 1961.

Coming from a family of ten children, she was pre-deceased by two sisters, Doris Wotton, Marie Crook and three brothers, Elliott, Arthur and Clinton Gilbert. Her husband also pre-deceased her in 1999.

Helen leaves two daughters, Carolyn Kelsey and Patricia Dubord. She also leaves a brother, Chester Gilbert and three sisters, Pearl Farrin, Gloria Westhaver and Jean Alley. She also leaves five grandchildren, Mason Dubord, Nadine Brown, Sheila Leeman, Tracy Verney and Kelsey Chute, and six great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours Wed., 12 - 2 p.m., service to follow 2 p.m., Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, with the Rev. Michael Stevens officiating.

If desired, donations may be made to Miles Home Health/Hospice, Box 4500, Damariscotta.

A. Elsa Kigel
2001-01-11

Elsa Kigel, 87, Waldoboro, died Jan. 7, at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro after a full life.

She was born July 4, 1913 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of John and Jennie Anderson Osol.

Following high school in Natick, Mass., she graduated from Bryant and Stratton Business College. After college she married Charles Kigel on May 26, 1935. Together they made their home in Needham, Mass., where Charles ran a radio store. In the fall of 1936 the Kigels moved to a blueberry farm they purchased in north Warren.

In 1938 the Kigels converted the blueberry business into a poultry farm where they lived until 1944. At that time Charles and Elsa enlarged the poultry business, moving to their home on North Pond Rd. in Warren.

Elsa remained active as a homemaker and working on the family farm. An avid gardener, she maintained extensive flower and vegetable beds, producing and putting up all the family’s vegetables. For recreation, Elsa enjoyed travel, horseback riding and reading historical and biographical books.

Elsa continued self-education her entire life through travel to Canada, Alaska, Europe, Russia and the Middle East. She studied both Russian and French languages as well as art history, sewing and cooking. She was noted for her “Nisu” (Finnish coffee bread).

Elsa was always active in community affairs. The Kigels hosted several foreign exchange students, Elsa worked on the census, conducted charity drives for heart and cancer organizations and during World War II, served as an “airplane spotter.”

She was a member of the University of Maine Extension, Warren Women’s Club, Waldoboro Garden Club, the Audobon Society, the American Red Cross swimming program, PenBay Hospital Auxiliary, and she was an active member of the Reach for Recovery Program. Elsa also served on local historical societies, and on the board of the Waldoboro Public Library.

Elsa will be best remembered for her kindness, consideration of others, her positive attitude and her unfailing optimism.

She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanora Brennan.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Charles Kigel of Waldoboro, daughters Gale Ann Clegg of Philadelphia, Jean Elsa Kigel and her husband Daniel Bolita of Waldoboro as well as five nieces and nephews and many friends.

At the family’s request there will be no services.

Donations may be made in Elsa’s memory to the Waldoboro Public Library, P.O. Box 768, Waldoboro 04572.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home.

Elinor M. Knapp
2000-04-20

Elinor M. (Mills) Knapp, 81, native and summer resident of Maine, and resident of Foley, Ala. for the past six years, died peacefully April 12 at South Baldwin Regional Health Center, Foley, after recurring illnesses during the last few years. Cause of death was listed as heart failure.

Born in Skowhegan April 27, 1918, she grew up and attended schools in Portland and also lived in Reading and Marblehead, Mass., as well as Amherst, NH and South Bristol until 1994.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gardner C. Knapp of Foley, Ala.; their daughter, Lucie K. Wright of North Whitefield; a granddaughter, Gretchen Lee Gottlich of Newport News, Va.; and great granddaughter Carmen Zia Siahmakoun of Terre Haute, Ind.

Mrs. Knapp was a graduate of Reading, Mass. High School, class of 1936, and of Malden Commercial School. She worked for many years as bookkeeper and cashier for several firms: Boy Scouts of America, Malden, Mass; Halloran Bros. Nurseries, Newton Highlands, Mass.; Houghton-Mifflin Co., publishers, of Boston; and Tulley Automotive, Nashua, NH.

In addition, she had volunteered and held office in a number of organizations: Amherst Congregational Church Diaconate, Amherst, NH; Miles Memorial Association, and Olde Bristol Garden Club, corresponding secretary, Damariscotta; Union Church of South Bristol, treasurer, and the Women’s Association of Union Church, before health problems prompted the Knapps to move south to Foley.

A summertime memorial service, to be announced, is planned to be held at Union Church, South Bristol. Her cremains will be returned to Maine, according to Mrs. Knapp’s wishes.

No flowers please. Those wishing may make charitable contributions of choice in her name.

Clyde Emery Knight Jr.
2000-07-20

Clyde Emery Knight Jr., 70, died July 16 in Wichita Falls, Tex.

He was born in Portland, the son of Clyde E. and Nathalie (Seiders) Knight, and lived in Cape Elizabeth where he graduated from high school. He also graduated from SMVTI, lived in South Bristol and worked in Shipyard in East Boothbay.

When he retired from the US Air Force he settled in Iowa Park, Texas where he worked for the city of Wichita Falls.

Surviving are his wife, Erika Knight of Iowa Park; daughters Sonia Knight of Dallas and Brenda MacDonald and granddaughter Kristen MacDonald, both of Iowa Park; sisters Pauline Farrin of Bristol, Louise Lewis of Rockland, and Marilyn Seiders of Waldoboro; and brother Clayton of Savannah, Ga.

Services were held previously. Burial will be at West Bristol Cemetery, Walpole. Graveside service at a later date. Arrangements are by Owens and Brumley Funeral Home, Wichita Falls, Tex.

Bobby James Knox
2000-07-13

Bobby James Knox, 38, Jefferson, died unexpectedly June 25 at his home. born in Texas on May 29, 1962, he was the son of James Robert and Maxine Rachel (Bridges) Knox. Bobby attended several trade schools, and served in the US Army. He wasemployed as a dairy farmer in the Windham area, and in recent months had worked as a mechanic at Rockland Harbor Boat Yard. On May 28, 2000 he was married to Violet Marie (Noyes) Hinckley in Jefferson. Bobby loved cars, and was especially fond of his Chevrolet 1987 Monte Carlo Super Sport. In addition to his wife of Jefferson, he is survived by his father of Georgia; his mother-in-law, Eunice Noyes of Jefferson; his son, Bobby Erin Knox and his daughter, Mercedes Knox, both of Georgia; his step-daughter, Shannon Hinckley and his stepson Ronald Hinckley, both of Jefferson; his sisters, Nicki Hester, Bobbi Shannon Knox, Robin Pearl Knox, Janet Hymer, Sherri Knox and Paulette James, all of Georgia; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends. Visiting hours: June 28, 7-9 p.m., Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor Neck Rd., Windsor. Graveside service: June 29, 11 a.m., Noyes Family Cemetery, Jct. of Rts. 17 and 32, Jefferson, Rev. Warner Howard officiating. Burial to follow service.

Bernice M. Kuhn
2000-03-09

Bernice M. Kuhn, 87, Waldoboro, died March 1 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born Dec. 9, 1912 in Rockland the daughter of Abraham and Hannah Culhane Aylward. She grew up and attended schools in Camden. She worked at the Paragon Button Factory in Waldoboro. She was a homemaker. She had a gift shop that sold yarns and hooked rugs from the old Miller homestead on Route 220. She was a communicant at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Rockland. She picked strawberries and raspberries and made pies. She knitted mittens, scarves and afghans for many years and donated them to various organizations and senior citizens.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, Sr., son, Kenneth, Jr., brother, Thomas Aylward, sister, Dorothy Aylward, and by two grandsons, David Michael and Robert Bryon.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law: Janice H. Young and her husband Dennis Young, Sr. of Cushing, Grandchildren: Ronald E. Nystrom of Bangor, Barbara Trussell of Warren, Sandy Fetchen of Thomaston, Nancy Dishman of Rockland, Nieces: Susan Wootton of Camden, Nancy Carlson of Stanford, CT, Becky Mann of Portland, Nephew: Gregory Aylward of Rockport, Sister-in-law: Geraldine Simmington of Texas and nine great grandchildren.

Visiting hours 6 to 8 p.m. March 3 at the Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro. A graveside service 1 p.m. March 4 at the Shuman cemetery in Waldoboro. Father Mark Reinhardt will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Barbara Rose Keene
2001-02-22

Barbara Rose Keene, 73, Cape Coral Fla., was heaven bound February 10, after “fighting the good fight” against cancer.

She was born in Port Maitland, Nova Scotia, Canada on Sept. 5 1927, daughter of Isabel and James Rose.

She came to the United States as a child, settled in Damariscotta, and graduated from Lincoln Academy, Newcastle, in 1946. She attended Pelletier School of Beauty Culture and, following graduation, was employed at Ethel’s Beauty Shop.

She married Edwin W. Keene of Damariscotta in Nov. of 1947.

She and her husband owned and operated Keene’s Shoe Store in Damariscotta from 1951 to 1979 when they retired. From then on they spent winters in Cape Coral, Fla. and summers at their cottage on Damariscotta Lake.

Barbara enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, boating, and traveling, as well as short flights in her husband’s seaplane. Traveling adventures took her and her husband to Mexico and Europe. They also took several cruises to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, and through the Panama Canal.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Edwin, of Cape Coral, Fla., her daughter Barbara Louise Drejza of Honolulu, Hawaii, her granddaughter Jennifer L. Groth of Novi, Mich., her grandson Michail L. Drejza of Honolulu, Hawaii, her brother Gordon Rose of Victoria, British Columbia, two stepsisters, Florence Hutchins and Dorothy Deets of Damariscotta, her cousin Mildred Grant of Rockport, as well as a niece and a nephew and many cousins in Nova Scotia.

Contributions in Barbara’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Memorial service later this summer on Damariscotta Lake.

Charles F. Kerber
2001-06-07

Charles F. Kerber, 83, Bristol, died May 27 at home after a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, and was the son of Dorothea and William Kerber.

He attended City College High School in Baltimore, and later earned a degree in business administration from Drexel University.

Charles entered the service in 1942 and served 4 years with the Army Air Force. He was with the 345th bomber squardron stationed in the Pacific.

Later in life he worked for Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA, and the Smithsonian Institute. Charles enjoyed fishing, sailing, gardening and the stock market.

He is survived by his wife Zana of Bristol, a daughter Nancy Parker of Newcastle, and a son Philip of Freeport. He also has 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.

Memorial service 11 a.m. Wed., June 13, at Water of Life Lutheran Church in Newcastle. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St. Damariscotta.

Peter Kerns
2001-02-22

Peter Kerns of East Walpole, Mass. and East Boothbay and Waterford, Maine died suddenly in Cologne, Germany on January 27. He was 59.

Mr. Kerns graduated in 1959 from North Plainfield (N.J.) High School and was a National Merit Scholar. A 1963 graduate of Amherst College, he won the Mayo Smith Fellowship, and worked in college admissions the following year.

Mr. Kerns loved theatre and travel, but his greatest mission was expanding the boundaries of the minds, as well as the physical skills of children. To that end, he taught French, Spanish and theatre, arranged and led several Spanish/U.S. student exchange and travel programs, organized off-campus interim study programs for students, and worked in several capacities at children's summer camps.

During his 26-year teaching career he taught at the University School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, The Barlow School in Amenia, N.Y., Wykeham Rise School in Washington, Conn., Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass., and he substituted in the Westwood and Dedham, Mass school systems.

In 1965 Mr. Kerns married Penny Wise, and the following summer they worked as designers at the Boothbay Playhouse. A part-time summer resident of East Boothbay since that time, in the mid-90s he delighted in pinch-hitting during September and October at Rocktide's front desk. During 1968 he was Executive Director of the Sharon (Conn.) Creative Arts Foundation, and during summers in the '70s, he and Penny designed, directed and ran public relations for the Sharon Playhouse.

From 1980-1992 he directed Nobles Day Camp. In 1996 the Kerns Family bought Camp Waziyatah, a co-ed resident camp for children 8-15 in Waterford. The following summer they allowed Disney Channel to film "Bug Juice," a 20-episode documentary series, which followed the lives of Waziyatah campers and staff throughout the entire season. At the time of his death Mr. Kerns was in Germany to interview staff applicants for the 2001 season.

An active member of the American Camping Association, Peter served on the National Board, chaired national and regional conferences and was an instructor of the organization's Basic Camp Director Course and its Standards and Accreditation Program. He also served for four years as president of the Association of Independent Camps.

Mr. Kerns leaves his wife, Penny Wise Kerns; daughters, Heather Labenski and Holly Ober; sons-in-law, David Labenski and Terence Ober; and grandson, Maxwell Wallace Ober.

To honor Mr. Kerns' passion for educating children, donations may be made to the Peter Kerns Memorial Scholarship, c/o Camp Waziyatah, 19 Vose Lane, East Walpole, MA 02032.
