Richard H. King
2002-09-12

Richard H. King, 83 of Wiscasset died Saturday, September 7 at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.

Born in Fairfield March 20, 1919, he was the son of Ernest N. and Catherine A. (O'Brien) King. In 1938, he graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield and moved to Wiscasset.

He was employed at Bath Iron Works before World War II where he completed his apprenticeship as a machinist. In 1942, he married Blanche "Bee" Plumstead from Wiscasset where they resided for 60 years, spending time also at Boothbay Shores for the past 20 years. He was employed at Flood's Hardware in Wiscasset for ten years.

Mr. King returned to Bath Iron Works as a machinist retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor where he was a member of the choir and the Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the Wiscasset Yacht Club, the Wiscasset Fire Society and the Boothbay Region YMCA.

Mr. King was an avid boat enthusiast and enjoyed playing pool.

Survivors include his wife, Bee King of Wiscasset; seven nieces and six nephews, Catherine King of Arlington, Mass., Paul King of Wiscasset, Elizabeth Phillips of East Vassalboro, Mary Mayott of Springfield, Vt., Rachel Chang of Niskayuna, N.Y., James King of Brunswick, Michael King of Myrtle Beach, S. C., Jane Decker of Greenfield, N.H., Daniel King of Madison, Stephen King of Skowhegan, Catherine Burch of Greenfield Center, N.Y., Neal King of Turner and Helen King-Atallah of Oakland.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Theodore J. King and Harold F. King.

Visiting hours were held Monday at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, September 10 at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the church.

Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery on the Birch Point Road in Wiscasset. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Linn A. King
2002-04-25

Linn A. King, 88, widower of Mary (Little) King, of New Castle, N.H., died Sunday, April 20 at his home.

Born in Methuen, Mass. on December 20, 1913, he was the son of Frank and Irene (Brackett) King.

Mr. King was a graduate of Lowell Institute in Lowell, Mass., and was employed for over 30 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Pearl Harbor Shipyard, where he retired in 1972.

He was a long-time resident of New Castle, N.H., and summered at Ocean Point.

Mr. King was a life member of the Naval Lodge #184, AF&M of Kittery. He had played with the Honolulu Symphony, the Portsmouth City Band and many other local bands.

Survivors include three sons, John M. King of New Castle, N.H., Frank O. King of Sandown, N.H., and Dennis C. King of Kaneohe, Hawaii; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminister Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H. on Wednesday, April 24.

Louise C. Knowles
2002-03-21

Louise Conklin Knowles, 95, of Summit, N.J. died February 7 in New Jersey. She was a summer resident of Spruce Point for many years.

She was born in Madison, N.J. and lived in Summit for over 70 years.

Mrs. Knowles was a 1928 graduate of Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia.

Active with the Central Presbyterian Church, she was a 70-year member, deacon and member of the Women's Association.

Mrs. Knowles was a member of the Junior League, the Fortnightly Club and the Overlook Hospital Auxiliary, all in Summit.

She was predeceased by her husband, David Knowles, and a daughter, Anne Knowles.

Mrs. Knowles is survived by a son, Robert C. Knowles, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Knowles were held February 16 in the Central Presbyterian Church in Summit. Arrangements by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home, Summit.

W. Melbourne "Mel" Knox Jr.
2002-08-29

W. Melbourne "Mel" Knox Jr., 81, of Barters Island, Boothbay, died Monday, August 26 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Maplewood, New Jersey, he was the son of William M. and Constance Cooper Knox. He attended the Maplewood schools, including Fielding School named for his great uncle, Charles Fielding, and graduated from Columbia High School in 1938.

Mr. Knox served for years with the Air Force during World War II. He was an aerial engineer on a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber assigned to the 8th Air Force, 95th Bomb Group based in Horham, England. He completed 35 combat missions over Europe, including D-Day, and service in Russia and Italy. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation with oak leaf cluster and the European Theatre Ribbon with four battle stars.

Mr. Knox entered business after being discharged from the Air Force and was employed by the Township of Maplewood in 1957. He was elected Collector of Taxes in 1964, which he resigned a year later when he was elected Township Clerk. At the time he was also appointed Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, retiring after 27 years of service. During his tenure he also served as secretary of many boards and commissions including the Planning Board, Board of Health, Economic Development Commission, Alcoholic Beverage Control, Fourth of July Committee, Servicemen's Committee and the Municipal Building Mural Committee.

He was past president of the Municipal Clerk's Association of Essex County, a founding charter member of the New Jersey Governmental Purchasing Association and Secretary-Treasurer of the Joint Council of Municipal Planning Boards of Essex County.

Mr. Knox attended Rutgers University receiving a certificate in business administration and was licensed by the state of New Jersey as a Registered Municipal Clerk as well as a Certified Municipal Finance Officer.

He was active in many civic organizations and was a past commander of Maplewood Post 80, American Legion, a member of Charles E. Sherman Jr. Post #36, Boothbay, American Legion, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He served as president of the Maplewood Strollers and the Maplewood Lions Club. He was secretary of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, East Orange Corps. For 18 years, he was a member of the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce, a life member of the Maplewood Civic Association and a past president of the Maplewood Jaycee Foundation.

In 1971 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce.

He was known for his ethics, integrity, tireless service to the community and his historical knowledge of Maplewood and its people.

After retiring to Barter's Island in 1984, he served for 14 years as secretary of the Boothbay Region Lions Club, 16 years as the club's bulletin editor and chaired their blood drive for eight years. He was a Life Member of Lions International.

He was predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Eleanor, in 1998.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Roman of Boxboro, Mass. and Mrs. Katherine Hudson of Carrboro, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Suzanne Rogers of DePere, Wisc.; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, September 15 at 2 p.m. at the Southport Methodist Church. Buriel will be held later in Hollywood

Memorial cemetery in Union, N.J. Memorial gifts may be made to the Boothbay Region Lions Club, P.O. Box 598 Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500 Boothbay Harbor, Maine 04538.

Iva G. Koerber
2002-03-07

Iva G. Koerber, 92, of Brunswick died March 1 at her home.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, April 22, 1909, she was a daughter of Benjamin and Nettie Rowe Giles. She graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

On November 1, 1935, she married Frederick V. Koerber in East Boothbay. Mr. Koerber died February 26, 1993.

Mrs. Koerber lived in Edgecomb prior to moving to Brunswick in 1942. She was employed at the Economy Market and later Pejepscot Paper.

She was member and past President of the Brunswick Evergreens, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, former member of the Pythian Sisters, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Koerber enjoyed a very active life, traveling and spending time with her family.

Survivors include a son, Frederick V. Koerber Jr., and his wife, Katherine of Brunswick; a daughter, Carol L. Racine of Brunswick; a brother, Benjamin Giles, Jr., of China, Maine; four sisters, Audrey Chase, Edgecomb, Peggy Hawthorne, York, Betty Richardson, West Bath and Patricia Adams, Boothbay Harbor; five grandchildren, Kyle Koerber and Kristofer Koerber, Harold Racine, Arthur Racine, Gwendolyn Racine, and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Pleasant Street, Brunswick with the Rev. Daniel Warren and the Rev. Constance Chase officiating. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Boothbay in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kennebec Council, Girl Scouts of American, Brunswick Chapter, 138 Gannett Drive, South Portland 04106 or the Boothbay Region, YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor 04538.

William V. Kennedy
2003-02-27

William V. Kennedy, 75, of Wiscasset died Friday, February 21 at his residence after a long illness. He was the husband of Theresa A. Friedman Kennedy and the son of William V. Kennedy, Sr. and Elizabeth Veronica Donnelly, and the step-son of Charles F. Speraw.

Mr. Kennedy was born in Harrisburg, Pa. on January 15, 1928. He was educated in the Catholic school of Harrisburg, and at St. Francis College, Loretto, Pa. and Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis.

Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Kennedy worked as a reporter for the Harrisburg Evening News. He joined the U.S. Army in March, 1946, serving in Japan and China. Upon graduation from Marquette's University of Journalism in 1957, he became editor of the Mechanicsburg, Pa., Daily Local News, and began a lifelong career as a free-lance writer specializing in military affairs.

Mr. Kennedy returned to active duty with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving together with Mrs. Kennedy, an Air Force Flight Nurse, at Loring Air Force Base, Maine, and Upper Heyford RAF station, United Kingdom. He returned to active duty again during the Vietnam War, serving as an Army Public Affairs Officer in the Pentagon. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1982 as a Colonel.

Mr. Kennedy's work appeared in all major U.S. newspapers. He was the author or principal author of several books and numerous magazine articles. He was a member of the Air Force Association, the U.S. Cavalry Association and a life member of the U.S. Naval Institute.

While serving as commander of the Carlisle, Penn. unit of the Army National Guard, he put in place a tank memorial in honor of the men of the unit who were killed in World Wars I and II. He led the effort to revive the memory of Thompson's Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion, first major unit the Continental, now the U.S. Army, placing new monuments on the grave of the Battalion's Commander, Brig. Gen. William Thompson, in the Old Carlisle Graveyard, and state markers in communities that contributed units to the Battalion. He led the effort to put in place a memorial at Martin's Point on the shore of Casco Bay, Portland, to the 105 officers and men lost with the Portland-based destroyer U.S.S. Ruben James, the first U.S. warship to be lost in World War II, and the 469 Maine men who gave their lives in World War II as members of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines.

As president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter Keystone Association of Railroad Passengers, he led the successful effort to preserve and restore the former Reading Railroad passenger station at Camp Hill, Pa. He was founder of the Bobby Sands Dauphin County Division No. 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Boothbay Harbor, with Father Raymond Picard officiating. A reception in the parish hall followed.

Interment with full military honors will be in held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa.

Eliza C. Kinsey
2003-03-06

A memorial service will be held for Eliza C. Kinsey on Sunday, March 16, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. in the Boothbay Region High School gymnasium. (The date has changed from what was previously announced.)

The community is welcome.

Last week's obituary omitted two cousins of Eliza's, William Tardis of Auburn and Rick Tardis of Stuttgart, Germany. We regret the error.

In addition to the Eliza Kinsey Memorial Scholarship being created through the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund, a scholarship is also being set up in her name at Scripps College where she was a member of the Class of 2004.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Eliza's memory be sent to either: Boothbay Reg. Student Aid Fund, P.O. Box 293, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; or Office of Development, Scripps College, 1030 Columbia Drive, Claremont, CA 91711.
