Vernon A. Griffin
2003-04-25
Vernon A. Griffin, 77, a resident of 1138 Lewiston Rd., New Gloucester died Wednesday, at Clover Health Care Facility.

He was born in Lewiston, November 23, 1925, a son of Vernon A. and Zelma Mae (McPhee) Griffin.

Mr. Griffin was past commander and 31-year member of the American Legion Post #86 of Gray.

He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include daughters, Lorraine Griffin, Fran Dupont, Debra Bolduc, Kristi Hawkes, and her husband, Tom; Jamie Robbins and her husband, Art, all of New Gloucester; sons, Vernon Griffin and his wife, Elaine of Casco; Gard Griffin and his wife, Vickey, Kenard Griffin and his wife, Sheryl, both of New Gloucester; and David Griffin and his wife, Leah of Greene. He is also survived by a brother, Lawrence Griffin and his wife, Jean of Santa Rosa, Calif. Also survived by 35 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Edward Griffin, his wife, Berta Griffin, and a daughter, Nancy Gilblair.

Committal services were held at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. Following the service, family and friends gathered at American Legion Post #86, Gray.

Arrangements were by the family-owned Dillingham & Son Funeral Chapel, 62 Spring St., Auburn.

Vern Pollard
Vern Pollard, 79, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Gray, a son of James W.B. and Sarah Hansen Pollard, and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1941, where he was a track and field star holding a state record in the 100 yard dash.

He married Mildred Doggett in 1949.

He enjoyed horse racing, gardening, singing in the church choir and hanging out at Cole Farms Restaurant with his buddies.

Mr. Pollard served aboard The USS Boston in the Pacific during World War II, After the war he was road commissioner of Gray, and then operated The Mobil Gas Station in Gray for many years. After retiring from Mobil he worked at Cole Farms Restaurant. He was a Past Commander and 28 year member of the American Legion, The Gray Post No. 86. He attended all ritualistic functions of the Post and entertained with his rendition of "Bill Bailey".

Surviving are his six children; Marie Pollard, Jeanne Pollard, Gregory Pollard, Ellen Frye, Natalie Manning and Mark Pollard; one brother, Philip Pollard; and four sisters, Geraldine Cose, Barbara Ryan, Jane Barton and Donna Hill; 10 grandchildren.

A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Gregory Church on Saturday, June 21, by Msgr. Lavoie and committal service was in Gray Cemetery. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Memorial donations may be made in tribute to Mr. Pollard to: St. Gregory's Parish, P.O. Box 345, Gray, ME. 04039.

Van Liberty
Van J. Liberty, 89, of New Gloucester, passed away on February 27, 2005.

He was the husband of June Liberty.

A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Robert Liberty, 85
2002-04-12
Robert O. Liberty, 85, of Gray, died last Monday at his Dry Mills home.

He was active in the Gray Kiwanis Club and American Legion Post #86, and he had been a selectman for the Town of Gray.

Mr. Liberty was an owner of Fred S. Liberty & Son, Inc., a water-struck brick manufacturing company in North Yarmouth.

Formerly a Registered Maine Guide, he enjoyed flyfishing and hunting, and he had been a pitcher for a semiprofessional baseball team in Lewiston-Auburn.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Rae (Prince) Liberty; his daughter, Marilyn Gorneau, of Wiscasset; two sons, Richard A., of Gray, and Stanley R., of Mapleton, IL; four sisters, Celia Austin, of Gray, Irene Brown, of Cumberland, Lillian Robinson, of Harpswell, and Ida Cheney, of Freeport; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 A.M. at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Gray Village Cemetery. At his request, there will be no public visitation. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gray Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 258, Gray ME 04039.

Urban Roberts
1999-01-22
Urban G. Roberts, 80, died Sunday. Born in Gray June 2, 1918 the son of Urban and Emma Roberts. Mr. Roberts graduated from Pennell Institute in Gray. He lived his entire life on the family farm in Gray where he was born. He served in World War II in the Army and saw action in the Rhineland. He worked at Thomas Laughlin in Portland for over 40 years.

Mr. Roberts is predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane Roberts, who died in 1992, and a stepson, Charles Davis. He is survived by a sister, Doris Roberts Humphrey, and a niece, Gene Humphrey, of Gray. Several nieces and nephews.

A graveside ceremony will be held in the spring at Gray Village Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gray Rescue, P.O. Box 297, Gray, Maine 04039.

Theresa Clement
2000-01-14

Theresa Matilda Clement, 95, of Gray, died peacefully at Central Maine Medical Center with her family by her side.

She was born in New York City on March 7, 1904, a daughter of Karl and Amalia Triesner Schikerle. Mrs. Clement attended business school in New York, and worked as a secretary until she married George C. Clement. The couple moved to Rifton, NY, in 1940, and in 1953, they came to Gray, where they established a turkey farm. She was also a secretary at Pineland Hospital from 1955 until 1975.

Her husband died in 1970. She enjoyed her family and friends, especially entertaining them with song and dances, traveling abroad (particularly to Hawaii) and numerous hobbies. Mrs. Clement was a member of the Order of the Amaranth, Sons and Daughters of Liberty, Order of the Eastern Star, Maine State Retirees and a charter member of the Gray Meal site.

She was predeceased by a sister, Amelia (Molly) Johnson. She is survived by a son, George C. Clement and his wife, Francis, of Spring Hill, Florida; one daughter, Barbara T. Qualey and her husband, Charles, Jr., of North Anson; one sister, Dorothy Schikerle, of Kingston, NY; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Teresa Bibber, 100
Teresa H. Bibber, 100, died April 8, 2001 at a Brunswick nursing home.

She was born in Greenwich, CT, a daughter of Joseph and Margaret Kemes Hartel.

Mrs. Bibber worked as a dressmaker on Fifth Avenue in New York City, studied piano there and vacationed in Maine.

She married Eugene C. Bibber in 1930 and lived in Portland until moving to Gray in 1939. Mrs. Bibber wintered in Florida from 1968 to 1986 and lived in Harpswell during the summer.

Her hobbies were gardening and she was an avid pianist.

Mr. Bibber died in 1959.

Surviving are three sons: Eugene Bibber, of Gorham, Donald Bibber, of South Harpswell, and Richard Bibber, of Gray; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 10 A.M. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. Msgr. Robert Lavoie officiated.

Stoddard Thomas dies at 69
2005-04-29
Stoddard "Bob" Thomas, 69, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, April 24, at his home in New Gloucester.

He had been a longtime resident of Gray.

He was born in Searsport on January 26, 1936, a son of Mona and William Thomas.

Bob worked at Healthtex for many years, working his way up to Production Manager.

After Healthtex left the state, Bob went to work for the U. S. Postal Service.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching his grandson play baseball, his granddaughters just play and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Olson Thomas, of New Gloucester; two sons, Robert Chapman and his companion Gail, of New Gloucester and William and wife Beth Chapman of Gray; a daughter, Judith and husband Gregory Rand of Gray; two grandchildren, Ryan Rand and heather Chapman; two sisters, Billie Ragan and Eileen Josephs; and a brother, Paul Roberts; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held in Lower Gloucester Cemetery, with Pastor Douglas Hedstrom officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to New Gloucester Rescue, P.O. Box 82, New Gloucester, Maine 04260, or Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., P.O. Box 819, Lewiston, Maine 04243.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
