Janet F. King
2004-01-22

Janet Frost King, 88, of Riverwoods in Exeter, New Hampshire, died Sunday, January 18 of natural causes.

Born April 13, 1915, she was the daughter of Allen H. and Florence Hart Frost.

Mrs. King graduated from Antioch College in 1937 with a degree in Early Childhood Development, and taught at Merry Institute in St. Louis, Missouri.

On September 4, 1940, she married Edward O. King of Webster Groves, Mo. They lived in Houston, Texas and Darien, Connecticut.

Mrs. King was a devoted mother and homemaker, formerly a nursery school teacher, and a tireless volunteer who loved her work with her children's schools, her churches in Darien and Houston, and the Houston Symphony Orchestra. She also enjoyed entertaining, traveling, sewing, needlepoint and playing bridge. Summers on Squirrel Island in Boothbay Harbor were a special delight to her.

She was predeceased by one son, Charles A. King who died in 1977; and two brothers, Richard H. Frost and Edward H. Frost.

Survivors include her husband, Edward; three children, Katharine King Raybin of Boulder, Colo., Elizabeth King Elliman of Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Dr. Edward W. King of Bentwood, N.H.; one brother, Ted; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the Great Bay Room of Riverwoods at Exeter at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 23, with Brewitt Funeral Home handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Squirrel Island Preservation Foundation, c/o Gail Cinelli, P.O. Box 84, Yarmouth, ME 04096; or Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Helen King, formerly of Gray
2004-11-19

Helen Frederica Miller Hodge King, who lived in Gray at one time, died on November 10 at a Portland hospital.

She worked for Healthtex, Pineland and Upjohn Hospice. In Gray, she coached softball and was active in Scouting.

She is survived by four children, Vanessa Tomlinson, of Portland, Carleton Hodge, of Limington, Kathleen Breiding, of Buxton, and Sallie Gibson, of Port Richey, FL; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the care of Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.

Priscilla S. Kinney
2004-09-02

Priscilla S. Kinney, passed away Thursday, August 26, in Boothbay.

Born January 17, 1927, she was a daughter of Frank and Irene Gilman Stevens.

In 1944 she graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School. For several years she worked at the Boothbay Harbor Freezer before moving to Portland.

She married Morris Kinney and together they ran a gas station and a small grocery store in Gray until Morris passed away in 1974. Mrs. Kinney then moved to Kansas and worked as a waitress.

In 1992 she moved back to Maine, living in the Boothbay area.

She is predeceased by her husband, Morris Kinney; brothers, Carroll Stevens and Atwood Stevens; and sister, Louisa Elder.

Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request there will be no funeral services. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Clarissa A. Keene
2004-07-15

Clarissa Ada Keene, 68, of Boothbay, died suddenly at her residence Sunday, July 11.

Born April 11, 1936 in Nobleboro, she was the daughter of Guy and Ruth Winslow Benner, and attended Waldoboro schools.

She was employed as a C.N.A. at Coves Edge in Damariscotta for 15 years, and most recently has been a caretaker for Clayton Hodgdon for the last 20 years.

The focus of her life was taking care of her family and doting on her grandchildren.

She enjoyed cooking, canning vegetables and crafts.

Mrs. Keene is predeceased by her husband James Keene.

Survivors include a son, Marsden Brewer of Stonington; one daughter, Verna Poole of Dover N.H.; two brothers, Guy "Donny" Benner of Jefferson and Arthur William Benner of Caribou; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, at the Hall Funeral Home, Main St, Waldoboro, where with Rev. Robert Dorr officiating.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Keene's memory to St. Andrews Home Health Care, P.O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Donald Kelley, Sr
2004-10-01

Donald Kelley, Sr., who was born in 1927, has died peacefully after a brief illness at Central Maine Medical Center, with his family by his side.

He was the loving husband of Brenda and the cherished father of Michael O'Brien, of Gray, Heather Millett, of Raymond, Karen Roberts, of Standish, Donald K. Kelley, Jr., of Unity, and David O'Brien, of Rapid City, ND.

He was a proud World War II veteran. He retired 15 years ago after a long career with the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed spending his retirement years with his wife, children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was also an avid sports fan who loved a good game of golf with his friends, and he was a loyal fan of the Portland SeaDogs and the New England Patriots.

Donald will always be loved and remembered by all whose lives he enhanced.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Gray Public Library, 5 Hancock Street, Gray, ME 04039.

Services will be private at the request of the family. Arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral Home.

Carol S. Kendrick
2004-06-24

Carol Schwenk Kendrick, 92, died peacefully on Friday, June 18 at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta after a long illness.

Born in Southampton, N.Y. on January 22, 1912, she was a daughter to Florence Bailey Schwenk and Henry Schwenk.

She graduated from Southampton High School and attended Martha Washington Seminary and Marjorie Webster School in Washington, D.C. In 1934 she married Mercator Cooper Kendrick. They made their home at historic Cooper Hall on Windmill Lane in Southampton. Judge Kendrick predeceased her in 1993.

Mrs. Kendrick managed several Main Street properties inherited from her father including the Arcade Build-ing and Apartments which Henry Schwenk built.

She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, was active in the church circles and was instrumental in the renovation and decorating of the church manse in the 1960s.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Mrs. Kendrick was a major force on the East End on behalf on the American Cancer Society. During the 1950s she worked in the Southampton Hospital.

She was a champion swimmer in her youth and played tennis doubles into her 85th year at her winter home in Englewood, Florida. She loved to entertain at her beloved summer "camp" on Whalebone Landing in Southampton. She moved to Damariscotta in 1999.

Predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Willumsen and Helen Zelenski, Mrs. Kendrick is survived by her daughters, Deborah Cooper Kendrick of Southampton; and Linda (and Thomas) Levenson of Wiscasset; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Levenson of Waltham, Mass., and Matthew Lincoln Cooper (and Amy) Levenson; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Marley Levenson of Wilmington, New York; nieces, nephew and grandnephew.

According to her wishes, she was cremated and a memorial service will be held in Southampton, N.Y. at a future date.

William Kennedy
2004-08-06

William David Kennedy III, 59, of Liberty Avenue, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening at 7:30 P.M., July 28, 2004, after a brief illness.

He was born December 24, 1944, in Rochester, NY, a son of William David Kennedy, Jr., and Lorraine Smith.

Bill was a member of Windham Assembly of God Church.

He worked at the Southworth Machine Co. for 14 years, before owning and operating his own scrap metal business for the past ten years.

On October 28, 1983, he married Patricia Meserve.

He was a devoted, loving husband and father. One of his favorite things to do was to go camping with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife's daughter, Sherry, and his mother, Lorraine.

Bill is survived by his wife, of Gray; nine children, Juanita Dube, of Maine, Adam, of South Portland, Jessica Fields, of Brunswick, Marie, of Gorham, Jamie, Nick, Billi-Jo, Garrett and Joey, all living at home; three stepchildren, Mary Kay Sanborn, of Windham, Barbara Dioniso, of Windham, and Kenny Meserve, of North Carolina; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his father; three sisters and their families, Judy and David Cousins, of Lewiston, their son and daughter, Glen Sutton, of New York, and Deborah Kennedy, of Gray, as well as many close friends.

A funeral service was held at Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham, last Sunday. Private burial will be in Gray Village Cemetery.

Jane S. Keyes
2004-01-15

Jane Schuyler (Nelson) Keyes, 87, of Alna died at her home on Wednesday, December 31, after several weeks at Maine Medical Center. She was with her children and grandchildren during her final days.

Born on March 11, 1916 in Albany, N.Y. she was the daughter of Richard Macdonald Nelson and Evelyn Humphrey Nelson. She grew up in Boston and Long Island and attended St. Agnes School in Albany and Barrington School in Great Barrington, Mass.

She studied ballet and trained as a classical pianist. As a young woman, she worked as a model in New York City, and later taught piano.

In 1937, she married Arthur McKinne Stires from whom she was divorced in 1972. She lived in New York City, Maine, Connecticut and Vermont before settling in Maine in 1958 at her home, "Juniper Hill," in Alna. In 1972, she met and married Henry M. Keyes of Concord, Mass. and Sheepscot, Maine.

Mrs. Keyes was an active bridge player right up until her recent hospitalization. Formerly, she was an avid tennis player, sailor, gardener, and gourmet cook. In the 1960s and 70s, she made and sold hor d'oeuvres, catered various functions, and eventually wrote her own cookbook, "The Frozen Hor d'oeuvre Cookbook," published by Hastings House in 1980. She also raised and trained Chesapeake Bay Retrievers for 20 years.

She was a member of the Miles Hospital League and the Round Top Center for the Arts. At the age of 77, she took up improvisational jazz piano, studying with Daniel Delaney of New Hampshire for nearly ten years. For several years, she played classical piano at the Lincoln Home and Cove's Edge on a monthly basis.

Survivors include her three children, Janie Breit of Los Angles, Calif., McKinne Stires of Westport, and Cally Aldrich of Alna; nine grandchildren; nine great-grand-children; four stepsons; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Edward Nelson of Tucson, Ariz. and David Nelson of Denver, Colo.

A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, January 18 at 4 p.m. at Camp Kieve's Kennedy Center in Nobleboro. All friends and family are warmly welcome to celebrate Jane's life and enduring love.
