Ernest A. Labbe Jr.
1999-03-11

NORWAY - Ernest A. Labbe Jr., 75 of Norway died Sunday March 7, 1999 at his residence on the Crockett Ridge Road, Norway.

He was born in Lewiston on February 8, 1924, the son of Ernest A. Labbe Sr. and Laura Morin Labbe.

He attended schools in Auburn and Robert's Business College.

Mr. Labbe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II on his seventeenth birthday. He served with the 3rd Marine Division with landings in the Southwest Pacific on Bougainville, and New Calidonia. While still in the Marine Corps he married his childhood sweetheart ,Ethel Foisy, on August 19, 1944.

In the spring of 1957 Ernie and Ethel purchased the Twin Town Bowlaway in Norway, after observing the limited activities for young folks in the twin town area.

Ernie solicited funds from area merchants to start a Saturday morning free bowling program for area youths, which lasted for the eight years they owned the Bowlaway.

In 1946 he was elected Commander of Normand Dionne V.F.W. Post of Lewiston making him the youngest commander in the U.S. at that time.

In 1950 he became a member of Sacred Heart School building committee of Auburn.

He was a member of the Stone Smart Post # 82 of the American Legion in Norway. He enjoyed working on the bingo games that the Legion operated on Monday nights. He received the R.S.V.P. for most outstanding volunteer award in 1991. He was a member of the Western Maine Marine League, charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council of Norway, Floyd Harlow Post V. F.W. of South Paris, Past Commander of Stone Smart Post American Legion of Norway, Junior Vice Commander of Oxford County Council American Legion, Saint Catherine's of Sienna Church of Norway, the Poland Spring Country Club and Weary Club of Norway where he could be found daily playing cribbage.

He received the Francis Wyman Volunteer Award in 1995, Military Order of Devil Dogs, and the Western Maine Detachment Marine Corps League.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, of Norway; one son, E. Dean Labbe and fiancee, Joan Quinn of Oxford; a sister, Jeannette Gagne of Berlin, NH; grandchildren, Stephanie Harney, twin grandchildren, Jason Labbe and wife, Lisa and James Labbe and wife, Kaarina, Michelle Labbe, David Sneed and Candace Sneed and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Maine Veterans cemetery in Augusta at a time and date to be announced later. There is no visitation. Donations in Mr. Labbe's memory may be sent to the Norway Memorial Library building fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Ernest A. LaCroix
1998-10-01

PARIS - Ernest A. LaCroix, 70, died Wednesday, September 23 at the Maine Veterans Home, 477 High Street, South Paris where he had lived for the past year and a half.

The son of Joseph and Agnes (Jackson) LaCroix, Ernest was born in Lancaster, New Hampshire on July 18, 1928. During World War II he served as a U.S. Army Private with Troop `C,' second Constabulary Squadron from December 1, 1945 to June 15, 1947.

For many years he owned and operated a Janitorial Services Company until retirement.

Survivors include a son, Richard, and his wife, Suzanne, LaCroix of New Gloucester; three grandchildren, Jennifer Smith of Auburn, Monica Dodd and Valerie LaCroix of New Gloucester; four great grandchildren, Nickolaus LaCroix-Moreau, Ritchy and Riley Smith, all of Auburn, and Cynthia LaCroix-Dodd of New Gloucester.

At his request, there are no calling hours or funeral services. Interment will be in the Lower Gloucester cemetery in New Gloucester. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader and Son Funeral Home on 3 Franklin Street in Rumford.

Ms. Verda A. Lafoy
1998-09-03

LEWISTON - Verda A. Lafoy, 39, of Hartford, died unexpectedly Monday evening, August 31, 1998, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Ms. Lafoy was born in Norway, September 12, 1958, the daughter of the late Clarence and Mildred (Melvin) Lafoy, but had been a resident of Hartford all her life. She attended Buckfield schools, graduated from Buckfield High School in 1978, and received her B.S. degree from Husson College, Bangor, in Business Administration.

Prior to being disabled, she had been associated with Montello Manor, Lewiston, as a CNA, and Med. Tech., for several years, prior to which, she had held the same position at Victorian Villa, Canton, and had been a health care provider, for her father, for many years.

A member of the Hartford Community Church, she is survived by two sisters, Enard Stillwell, and her husband Richard of Barrington, NH, and Lovessa Lafoy, of Hartford; a nephew: Richard Stillwell, Jr., of Massachusetts as well as several cousins, uncles and aunts.

Friends may call at the Andrews Funeral Home, Buckfield, Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Funeral services will be held at the Hartford Community Church, Church St., Hartford (off Route 219), Saturday at 11 a.m.. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, East Sumner.

Joanna L. Lallis
1998-04-02

Joanna Louise Lallis, 66, of Edgecomb, died Sunday, March 22 at her residence.

Born in Stoughton, Mass., on April 4, 1931, she was the daughter of Ellsworth B. and Alice P. (Pond) Blanchard. In 1946 she graduated from Avon High School and worked in a shoe factory in Mass. for several years and later worked at Snell Jones Tack Factory in Brockton, Mass.

In 1960, she moved to Edgecomb where she enjoyed lobstering, digging clams and being on the water. She was a lover of animals, especially her two dogs.

Survivors include one son, Joey Lallis of Kingfield; four grandchildren, Jason, Josh, Matt, and Tammy; and two great-grandchildren.

On February 3, 1998 she was predeceased by her stepmother, Pauline Mukhalian.

At her request there will be no services. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.

Edward Lancaster
1998-09-17

Edward S. ``Ned" Lancaster Jr., 77, of Litchfield, Conn., died Sunday, September 6 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn., after a long illness. He was the husband of Joan (Cairns) Lancaster.

Born in New Britain, Conn., he was the son of the late Edward S. and Ruth (Blackington) Lancaster. He attended the Mooreland Hill School in New Britain, and graduated from the Loomis School in Windsor in 1939. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University (1943) where he was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant aboard a sub-chaser. Following the war, he received his master's degree from Harvard Business School in 1950. He worked in Sales and Marketing in Hartford and New York City. He worked for the Torrington Company, Torrington, Conn., for more than 30 years retiring in 1980 as assistant sales manager of the Specialty Division.

He was a lieutenant colonel executive officer of the First Litchfield Artillery. He served as chairman of the Litchfield Inland Wetlands and Conservation Commission since the 1970s and received both local and state awards for outstanding achievement in 1995.

Mr. Lancaster was an avid sailor, boating enthusiast, and tennis player. He spent many summers on Squirrel Island, and vacationed at the Newbert Cottage at Ocean Point and for over 40 years at the Cairns cottage on Murray Hill Road.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John Lancaster of Pittsfield, Mass., Edward Lancaster III of Waterville, Vt.; two daughters, Susan Lancaster of Taos, N.M., Berry Lancaster of East Boothbay; a sister, Susan Flanders of Norwich, Vt.; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of his life was held at the First Congregational Church of Litchfield on Saturday, September 12. Private burial will be in Boothbay. Arrangements are by Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield, Conn.

Lois Kierstead Lapid
1998-03-26

Lois Kierstead Lapid, beloved wife of Remon D. Lapid, died Monday, March 23 at home in Chatham, N.J., following a brief hospitalization for cancer treatment at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Born in Bath, on August 16, 1947, she was the daughter of William and Ruth Ladd Kierstead. She graduated from Wiscasset High School in 1965 and from the University of Maine at Orono in 1969 with a degree in liberal arts, majoring in modern languages.

She worked for Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company in Boston and for McGraw Hill in New York City as a copy editor for their textbook division.

On April 1, 1977 she was married to Remon D. Lapid. They made their home in New York City until they purchased a home in Chatham, N.J. She was employed by New Jersey magazine in Morristown, N.J.

The family are active members of the Temple Sinai in Summit, N.J.

In her spare time, Lois was a volunteer, helping disabled children with therapy through horseback riding.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Jessica, age 11; her parents of Wiscasset; a nephew, Matthew Kierstead, U.S. Navy in San Diego, Calif.; and his two children; a niece, Laurie Kierstead of Tucson, Arizona; an aunt, Jean Amaya of Shelby, N.C.; an uncle, Robert Kierstead of West Roxbury, Mass.; several cousins and a special sister-in-law, Wendy Kierstead of North Windham.

She was pre-deceased by her brother, Richard in 1989.

A funeral service was held at Temple Sinai on Wednesday, March 25. She will be buried in B'nai Abraham Memorial Park in Union New Jersey.

A service of remembrance will be held in April at the First Congregational Church at the convenience of the family. The date will be announced.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Albin E. Larson
1999-01-07

NORWAY - Albin E. Larson, beloved husband of the late Elvi Larson passed away January 2, 1999.

He was the cherished father of Alice, Vicki and Larry Larson and grandfather to Christopher and Lawrence Larson.

A memorial graveside service will be held in the spring; time and date to be announced later. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Neal A. LaVallee
1998-06-19

Neal Armond LaVallee, 68, of Gray, died last Friday at Central Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. LaVallee attended Dry Mills school, and graduated from Pennell Institute. He was road commissioner and public works director for Gray, as well as deputy chief and later chief of the Gray fire department.

His son, Steven LaVallee, took over as head of public works from his father four years ago. `It was more than just a job,' his son said of Mr. LaVallee. `We spent many Christmases and other holidays waiting to open our gifts and have our meals because he was out plowing or sanding the roads.'

Mr. LaVallee also found time to coach Little League, and he was a founder of Gray Youth Club. He was also an active Masonic member, and he enjoyed camping, fishing, auto racing and serving Gray.

His funeral was attended by most of Gray's public officials and a host of his friends and fellow Masons. He is survived by two sons, Steven N. of Gray and Todd J. of Windham; two daughters, Gail Smart of Windham and Tami-Jo Staples of Gray; his father, of Gray; a sister, Patricia Merrill of Yarmouth; and 10 grandchildren.

Arthur Lavoie
1999-07-16

Arthur Lavoie, of Lewiston Road in Gray, died July 8 at Ledgewood Manor after a long illness. He was 86.

He was born in St. Modeste, Canada, one of 14 children of Ernest and Claudia Martin Lavoie. At 13, he came to the United States and worked with his father to help support the family.

He spent five years in the U.S. Army, seeing combat in World War II.

In 1944, he married Irene Blais, of North Yarmouth; they would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on July 15.

For most of his married life, he was carpenter. For 8 years, he operated Lavoie's Variety on Route 115 in North Yarmouth.

Lavoie was a good-hearted person who was always willing to lend a hand. He loved Canadian music, dancing, fiddle tunes and country music. He also loved gardening.

He is survived by his wife, a son, Ronald, and a daughter, Rose Dorr, all of Gray; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Charles and Ernest, both of Lewiston; and sisters Mary Bushy, Cecile Violette and Helen Gosselin, all of Lewiston, Delores LaBonte, of Pennsylvania, and Leonie Belleville, of Jay, Maine.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, July 24, at St. Gregory's Parish on North Raymond Road. Father Robert Lavoie will be Celebrant.

Funeral arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.
