Joyce Elizabeth Lewis

AUBURN - Joyce Elizabeth Lewis of Maple Hill Road, Auburn, died at home on her birthday, September 19, 2000, of cancer with complications from a stroke.

She was born in New York City on September 19, 1923, the daughter of Thomas J. and Mary Louise (Christy) Murphy. She was the third of four sisters, all of whom lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversaries.

She grew up in Stamford, CT and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford and received a diploma from the Mandell School in New York City. She later attended the University of Oklahoma and Georgetown University.

In August of 1947, she married William B. Lewis. After several years in Connecticut, they moved to his home state of Maine where they purchased their home on Maple Hill in Auburn in 1949.

While she was actively raising her two sons and a daughter, she volunteered in numerous capacities, especially with organizations dealing with children. Mrs. Lewis was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Leader, a Sunday School teacher at St. Michaels Episcopal Church, a member and officer of the Charles P. Wight School P.T.A., and taught skiing for the Auburn Recreation Department. She enjoyed teaching neighborhood children and her own relatives how to swim.

For several years she worked to bring classical music concerts to both children and adults in the twin cities. She also was a member of the board of the Auburn Children's Home and a member of the Women's Hospital Association.

In 1960 Mrs. Lewis worked as a census taker. She enjoyed the work so much that in 1970 she again worked for the U.S. Census serving as a crew leader.

When friends suggested she run for public office, she enjoyed campaigning door to door. When she was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1972, she was the first woman ever to be elected from the City of Auburn and one of two Republicans in Auburn who broke a longstanding trend for Auburn to send Democrats to represent them in Augusta. She was reelected to the Maine House three times, serving in Education and the Joint Standing Committee on Labor. She also was a member of the Order of Women Legislators. As a member of the NAEP Policy Committee of the Education Commission of the States, she worked to set policy regarding standardized tests that compare schools in the different U.S. states in various academic subjects.

She was a member of the the Androscoggin County Republican Committee, the Auburn Republican Committee, the Androscoggin County Republican Women's Club, serving as officer for a number of years, and was a delegate many times to the Maine Republican Convention.

Locally, Mrs. Lewis served on the boards of Central Maine Medical Center, Central Maine Healthcare Corp. and Hebron Academy, currently enjoying the title of Trustee Emeritus. She served recently on the Participating Agency Committee of the United Way of Androscoggin County. She was an adult member of a Great Books Reading Group when her children were young. In 1992 she took the training course for Junior Great Books, enjoying the idea of leading reading discussion of significant literature with children. She led Junior Great Books reading groups as a volunteer for the next nine years in Auburn elementary schools. She was also a member of the Maine Humanities Council Seminar since 1978, a reading and discussion group in Augusta.

In her later years, Mrs. Lewis enjoyed painting and flower arranging. She arranged wild and garden flowers for several area weddings. She was a lifelong conservationist, valuing recycling and composting long before they became public policy.

With her husband of 53 years Mrs. Lewis enjoyed an active social life. She will be missed by her many friends and family.

She is survived by her husband of Auburn; two sons, Henry and his wife Susan Lewis II of Brookfield, WI and Edward and his wife Sue Lewis of Worthington, MA; a daughter, Harriet and her husband George Robinson of Otisfield; grandchildren Angela Otteson and her husband Travis of Neosho, WI, Henry Lewis III of Washington, D.C. Weston III, Nathan, Clayton, and William Lewis of Brookfield, WI, Stephen, James and Elizabeth Lewis of Worthington, MA and Geneva, Andrew, and Thomas Robinson of Otisfield; a great-grandson, Seth Otteson of Neosho, WI; her sisters Madeleine Pollock and Irene deGarmo of Darien, CT; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Jane Steinbeck.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, September 23, at Mrs. Lewis' home on Maple Hill Road in Auburn, with Reverend Anne Stanley of Christ Episcopal Church of Norway officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Fortin Group/Plummer & Merrill Funeral Home, Auburn.

Arthur Lewis Sr.

BRIDGTON - Arthur Lewis Sr., 89, of Harrison, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000, in the Bridgton Health Care Center.

Mr. Lewis was born August 21, 1911, in Harrison, son of the late Jessey and Mabel Kimball Lewis. Mr. Lewis attended the Harrison area schools and worked as a woodsman.

After retirement, he worked as a scaler for a lumber mill. Mr. Lewis was a member of the Harrison Historical Society.

He is survived by three sons, James, Arthur Jr., and Jeffrey, all of Harrison; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Clara Davis of Farmington, Mary Fogg of Casco, and Dolly Brown of CA and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lewis was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Ethel Nutting; four brothers, Earl, Roger, Oscar, and Will Lewis; and three sisters, Georgia Andrews, Jessie Brown, and Ruth Roy.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, September 30, in the Maple Ridge Cemetery, Harrison.

Arrangements were by the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

Mrs. Leah E. Libby

LACONIA, NH - Leah E. Gram Libby, 68, of 28 Railroad Avenue, Belmont, NH died on December 28, 1999, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, NH.

She was the widow of Donald Frederick Libby who died in 1964.

Mrs. Libby was born June 11, 1931, in Oxford, the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Ellsworth) Smith.

She was a resident of Belmont for 10 years coming from Laconia. Mrs. Libby was a very giving person and was well-known as Gram.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah L. Sanville of Laconia, NH, Karen C. Taylor of Belmont, NH, and Brenda L. Chamberlain of Tilton, NH; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Smith of Mechanic Falls, and Charles Smith of Norway; two sisters, Celia Jacobs and Dorothy Libby, both of Rochester, NH; several nephews and nieces; and her companion of 20 years, Roger Colburn of Belmont. She was predeceased by a sister, Betty West.

Calling hours were held at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia, NH on Thursday, December 30, and funeral services were held on Friday, December 31, at Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia, the Reverend Alvah Adams of Farmington officiating. Burial followed in the family lot in Elwood Memorial Gardens in Otisfield.

The family requests that donations be made to the needy.

Richard Libby, 67
2000-09-08

Richard Mellen Libby, 67, a retired data processor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, died August 18 at a Lewiston Hospital. He was a longtime Gray resident.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, a son of Mellen Newman and Helen Grace Libby, he spent his childhood in the Washington, D.C., area, and graduated from Saint Johns College High School in 1951.

He served in the Coast Guard for four years as an electronics technician and attained the rank of petty officer first class, sailing on numerous ocean station weather patrols.

He served aboard several cutters, conducting international iceberg patrol, and also search and rescue missions in the North Atlantic within 100 miles of the North Pole.

Mr. Libby was employed by the Janscy and Bailey Engineering firm in Washington, until taking a job with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center at the Greenbelt Complex.

He worked as a data processing specialist for more than 26 years and was involved in all manned-flight missions, including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and the space shuttle program, including the Challenger disaster in 1986.

Mr. Libby retired in 1986. He was a communicant of St. Gregory's Church for many years, serving as a camp counselor when he was a teenager. He was a member of the American Legion in Gray and was past secretary, treasurer and president of the Eagles in New Gloucester. Mr. Libby was a computer enthusiast who liked the challenge of all electrical equipment and toys.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Jean M. Libby, of Gray; two sons, Richard Michael of Northvale, NJ, and Joseph Patrick, of Germantown, MD; two daughters, Cynthia Jean Saunders, of Gray, and Jacqueline Renee Fields, of Germantown; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Francis N. Libby, of Royal, Arkansas; and one sister, Grace L. Herbert, of Port Townsend, Washington.

A funeral mass was held last Monday at St. Gregory's Church, Gray. Burial was in Gray Village cemetery and Monsignor Robert Lavoie officiated.

Kathleen M. Lincoln
2000-01-27

Kathleen May Lincoln, 43, of Whitefield, died Sunday, January 23 at her residence.

Born in Augusta on January 14, 1957, she was the daughter of Elmer W. and Bonnie (Berube) Bangs Jr.

Mrs. Lincoln attended Randolph schools and graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1975. She was employed at Health-Tex in Gardiner and later worked at a nursing home in Gardiner. On July 30, 1977 she married Carroll L. Lincoln and they resided in Gardiner for a brief time before moving to Whitefield.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gardiner. She enjoyed spending time with her family and children, shopping and her two dogs. Survivors include her husband, Carroll L. Lincoln of Whitefield; her son, Travis L. Lincoln of Whitefield; her daughter, Shannon N. Lincoln of Whitefield; her parents, Richard and Bonnie Dunn Sr. of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Karen L. Rankins of Whitefield, and Kandie Jean of Randolph; two brothers, Kim L. Bangs of Randolph and Richard J. Dunn of Mt. Vernon; her grandmother, Genevieve Dunn of Manchester; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 26 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset, with Fr. Clement Thibodeau officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Kno-Wal-Lin Health Care, 605 Route 1, Suite 2, Newcastle, ME 04553.

Kathleen M. Lincoln

A graveside service for Kathleen May Lincoln, 43, who died on January 23, 2000 will be held at noon on Saturday, May 6 at Whitefield Plains cemetery in Whitefield. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

Patricia A. Lind

Patricia Ann Lind, 49, of Bremen, died Tuesday, August 29 at her home.

Born in Gloucester, Mass., on March 19, 1951, she was the daughter of Theresa D. Olsen and Wallace A. Olsen.

After graduating high school Mrs. Lind lived in Boston. She worked at Children's Hospital and danced at the Boston Ballet.

In 1974 she married Gordon Lind Jr.

For 20 years she enjoyed volunteer Bible education work, as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Because of her love of children, she spent many years in child care and education. She attended Northeast Montessory Institute and became a certified Montessori teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon of Bremen; one daughter, ReneČ Lind of Bremen; one son, Joel Lind of Bremen; three brothers, Wally Olsen of Brockton, Mass., Charles Olsen of Renthem, Mass., and James Olsen of Beverly, Mass.

Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset.

Patricia Lind
2000-08-31

Patricia Ann Lind, 49, of Folger Road died Tuesday, August 29 at her residence. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 2 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Station Road in Newcastle. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Lawrence A. Little
2000-09-21

Lawrence Andrew Little, 76, of Oregon, Illinois, died Monday, September 11 at his home.

He was born June 3, 1924 in Pepperell, Massachusetts, the son of Philip H. and Annie Louise (Brewer) Little.

He was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School, Class of 1942.

He was an engineman in the U.S. Navy and after 24 years of active duty, he retired in 1966. He was also a diesel engineer instructor at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, Georgia.

He was a veteran of World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Charles E. Sherman Jr. Post 36, American Legion of Boothbay and the Isaac M. Giles Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3475 in Boothbay Harbor.

He married Betty June (Perry) Anderson on September 11, 1991 in Lake Summerset, Illinois.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Daniel (Jackie) Little of Boothbay Harbor; three stepdaughters, Sharon Hatton of Pecatonica, Illinois, Georgeanna McGrew of Oregon, Illinois and Susan Snell of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; two sisters, Barbara Foley of Boothbay Harbor and Tamara Schmicker of Palm Court, Florida; two half-sisters, Margie Kluck and Mary Nolan, both of Boothbay Harbor; a nephew, Ron Pinkham; a niece, Tamara Peters; seven grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers, Michael, Philip and Paul Little, all of Boothbay Harbor, and Betty Pinkham, who also lived in Boothbay Harbor.

No funeral service was held.
