Stanley J. Lombara
2000-07-06

Stanley John Lombara, 84, of Wiscasset, died Thursday, June 29 at the Nicholson Long Term Care Center in Winthrop. born in Lynn, Mass., January 13, 1916, he was the son of Wojcek and Julia (Cobale) Lombara.

He entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Following his discharge he worked in photography throughout most of his career. For several years he worked for Claus Gelotte in Cambridge, Mass. He later taught photography evenings at Franklin Technical Institute in Boston, while operating his retail photo stores in both Lynn and Melrose.

In the 1970s, he and his wife, Sophie (Ostrowski) came to Wiscasset, and operated the Wiscasset Country Store on Route 1, until retiring.

For many years Mr. Lombara was active at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle.

Survivors include his wife, Sophie of Wiscasset; two children, Stanley E. Lombara of Wakefield, Mass, and Anna Ranta of Wiscasset; one sister, Cecilia Deveney of Rowley, Mass.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held on Monday, July 3 at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle. He will be laid to rest at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Horace H. Lee

Horace Hoffman Lee, 75, died in his sleep Tuesday, October 17 at Springbrook Nursing Home in Westbrook.

He was born April 27, 1925 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He and his family spent summers on MacMahan Island off Boothbay Harbor. As a young boy, he was the purser on the "market boat" which carried the islanders to Boothbay Harbor to do their shopping. He would deliver the groceries around the island.

Mr. Lee enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and was stationed in Guadalcanal with the 113th Ordinance Company. He was honorably discharged on January 27, 1946 and returned to high school. He graduated from Haverford School.

As a teenager, he was a volunteer fireman for the Bryn Mawr Fire Department.

After moving to Portland, Maine, he worked at The Portland Company as a bookkeeper. He later worked for Canal Bank in Portland where he met and later married Donna Jean Wormwood on February 28, 1959.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1960, where he opened the Boothbay Harbor branch of First Federal Savings and Loan as vice president/manager.

Horace was involved in several organizations within the Boothbay Harbor community for many years. He joined the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club on July 2, 1959 and in almost 40 years as a Rotarian, he missed only one meeting. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship in 1989, the highest award given by Rotary. Only six other Boothbay Harbor Rotarians had been so honored at that time. He was treasurer of the club for 31 years and was elected club president in 1978-79.

He was a member of the Seaside Masonic Lodge #144 in Boothbay, the Scottish Rite Valley of Rockland, the Maine Consistory Portland and the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston.

Mr. Lee also served as treasurer of the St. Andrews Hospital Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1991 and was elected treasurer of the Boothbay Harbor Sewer District for 26 years.

His family says Horace was proud to be a member of the Boothbay Harbor community. He was well-known and appreciated for leaving his business card on vehicles. On the back of his cards were written reminders to motorists to renew their registration and/or to have their vehicle inspected.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Cross of Princeton, N.J.; his two daughters, Jean Wormwood Lee of Boothbay Harbor and Anne Lee Karuntzos; and two grandchildren, Alesia and John Karuntzos.

Visiting hours at Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay will be on Thursday, October 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 20 at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Lee's memory may be made to the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club, P.O. Box 518, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Duane M. Leighton
2000-11-30

SOUTH PARIS - Duane M. Leighton, 67 of Pigeon Hill, Mechanic Falls, died Saturday, November 25, 2000 at Market Square Health Care Center.

He was born in Willimantic, ME, February 25, 1933, the son of Rodney and Mary Allen Leighton. He graduated from Guilfrod High School in 1950 and had worked as a shoe pattern designer.

Survivors include his wife Charlene Perkins Leighton of Mechanic Falls; three sons, Rodney of Rhode Island, John of Mechanic Falls and Shane Harvey of Skowhegan; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Norman Steeves, Jr. of Pittsfield; two sisters, Rachel and her husband Thomas Wyman of Abbot and Janet Law of Sacremento,CA; two grandchildren, Patrick Steeves and Ashley Ann Leighton.

Graveside services will be held in the spring in Willimantic.

Arrangements are by Weston-Chandler Funeral Homes, Norway.

Joe E. Lemar
2000-11-02

Joe E. Lemar, age 31, of Providence, Rhode Island, formerly of Dresden, died Wednesday, October 25 at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, R.I.

Born in Damariscotta April 21, 1969, he was the son of Joseph F. and Linda M. Hustus Lemar. As a young man he grew up in Dresden and was a 1987 graduate of Wiscasset High School. He graduated from Johnson & Wales College in Providence, R.I.

After graduating from college Mr. Lemar continued to live in Providence and worked as a Senior Operation Analyst for Fleet Bank until his death.

He enjoyed art and particularly enjoyed drawing and painting. He also enjoyed his cat, Mr. Bailey.

Surviving besides his mother and father of Dresden is a sister and brother-in-law, Tammy-Jo and David Marston of New Gloucester; several aunts; uncles; nieces and cousins, including a special cousin, Lorri Piper; and many friends who attended to him during his illness.

A funeral service was held Saturday, October 28 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset. Interment followed in Forest Hills cemetery in Dresden.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice in Mr. Lemar's memory. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home of Wiscasset.

Sally M. Leach
2000-10-12

Sally Merrow Leach died on Friday, October 6 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor after a long illness.

Born in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Harold K. and Sara M. Merrow.

She graduated from Hyde Park High School and Boston-Bouve College of Physical Education and attended Hyannis State Teacher's College in Massachusetts.

Mrs. Leach was an avid sailor, an active member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and was very proud of her role captaining a sailboat in the movie Carousel.

She was an enthusiastic volunteer and active in many organizations, including, Hyde Park YMCA, Glover Memorial Hospital, Needham School System, Nasson College Parents Council and Sawyer's Island Community Association.

Her family summered in Boothbay since 1918 and she retired to Sawyer's Island from Needham, Massachusetts in 1986.

She was predeceased by her sister, Susan Hopp in April, 2000.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Harry T. Leach of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Sally Sewall and Susan Leach of South Portland; and one sister, Elizabeth Withington of Mercer Island, Washington.

Private burial will be held at Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay.

Visitors are welcome to call at the family home on Sawyer's Island from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 14.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Leach's memory to the Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall of Boothbay.

Eben Lewis

Hon. Judge Eben Lewis

Former Alaska State Superior Court Judge Hon. Eben Herbert Lewis, 81, died October 26, 2000 at Providence Alaska Medical Center.

Judge Lewis was born November 15, 1918, in Boothbay Harbor. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School and attended Hebron Academy. He graduated from Bowdoin College with a bachelor's degree and Syracuse University with a law degree. From 1941-45 he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant.

Judge Lewis then began his legal career in Maine after receiving his law degree in 1948. In 1952, he took a position in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Department of Interior, Office of the Solicitor, and was assigned to the National Park Service. In 1954, he and his wife, Shirley, moved to Juneau for a one-year assignment to the Alaska Public Works Agency, where they quickly fell in love with Alaska.

The one-year assignment was extended to 1959, when he became city attorney for Anchorage. In 1960, he joined Paul Robison and Ken McKaskey to form the law firm of Robison, McKaskey and Lewis. He was appointed to the Superior Court bench by then Gov. Walter J. Hickel in 1967 and served full time to 1977 and as pro tem until retiring in 1982.

Judge Lewis was a member of the Petroleum Club of Anchorage and Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks. He was former president and board member of the Anchorage Symphony and was a board member of the Museum of History and Art on the sculpture selection committee.

He enjoyed flying, skiing, fishing and sailing with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Lewis of Anchorage; daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, Cynthia, Charles, Matthew and Rebecca Yoder of Palmer; son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, E. Thaddeus "Tad," Jane, Bridget and Nathan Lewis of Seattle; son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, Charles, Lisa, Taylor and West S and Eben Lewis of Encinitas, California; sister-in-law, Katharine Lewis and nephew Terry Lewis of Boothbay Harbor; and many other relatives.

Memorials are preferred to the Providence Alaska Foundation or Challenge Alaska.

Belna Libby, 83
2000-11-17

Belna L. Libby, 83, who lived in Gray until last March, died November 10 at the Barron Center, in Portland.

Born in Ashfield, MA, she was one of 14 children of Fred E. and Alice M. Burnell. She moved to Maine as a teenager, and graduated from Greely Institute in Cumberland.

She married Freeman Stowell in 1935. Mrs. Libby worked in Portland as a waitress at Your Host Restaurant and at Casco Printing.

In 1971, she married Leon Libby, Sr., and moved to Gray. Mr. Libby died in October.

Mrs. Libby enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, crocheting, knitting and cake-decorating.

She is survived by two sons, Richard A. Stowell, of Gray, and Ralph A. Stowell, of New Gloucester, and a stepson, Leon E. Libby, Jr., of Kennebunk; three brothers, Clive Burnell, of Saco, Carlan Burnell, of Cumberland, and Auman Burnell, of Steep Falls in Standish; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held on Monday at Wilson Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Bovill officiating.

Earl T. Littlefield
2000-11-23

NORWAY - Mr. Earl T. Littlefield, 76 died Sunday November 19, 2000 at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was a resident of Flander's Knoll in Stoneham.

Born in Lovell on February 28, 1924, he was the son of Thaxter and Louise (Trimback) Littlefield.

He was a graduate of Norway High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII.

He worked for Louis Chevrolet for 43 years as a parts manager and then for Profile Motors in Conway, New Hampshire for three years and then for Car Quest in South Paris.

He was also a volunteer at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Littlefield was married in Waterford in 1948 to Jean McAlister who survives of Stoneham.

Other survivors include two daughters, Monika L. Spooner and her husband Edward of Stoneham, Regina L. Sullivan and her husband Van of Farmingdale; three grandchildren, Sherry Madore and her husband Scott of Auburn, Joshua Spooner of Washington, D.C., Kimberley DeSanctis and her husband Derek of Stoneham; one great grandson, Zachary Earl Madore of Auburn; one sister, Betty Barker and her husband Edmond of Stoneham; one brother, Neal and his wife Martha of Stoneham.

He was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Lawrence who died in 1991

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Hillside cemetery in Stoneham with Rev. Jeorge Srobig officiating.

Those who desire may contribute to the Stoneham Rescue Service P.O. Box 42, Stoneham, Me. 04231 in his memory.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader & Sone Funeral Home, Rumford.
