Steven Sumner
Steven Sumner, 27, of Storer Street, died unexpectedly December 7, 2000 in Biddeford.

He was born in Melrose, Mass., a son of David and Marilyn Minnick Sumner, and was a 1992 graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School. He was also a 1994 graduate of Southern Maine Technical College, where he majored in hotel, motel and restaurant management.

Mr. Sumner was working as a technician at Spring Harbor Hospital in South Portland.

An outstanding high school athlete, he played basketball, ran track and cross country, and won the state high jump championship in 1992.

Surviving are his parents of South Portland; two brothers, David Jr., of Saco, and Jason, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Jessica Sumner of Gray.

A funeral service was held previously.

Spencer Cormier, infant, passes away
Spencer Kevin Cormier, infant son of Jared and Carolyn (Squires) Cormier, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH.

He was born March 31 in Manchester.

In addition to his parents, of New Ipswich, Spencer is survived by his maternal grandparents, Kevin and Deborah Squires, of New Ipswich; his paternal grandparents, John and Lee Cormier, of Leesburg, FL, and Jonathan and Belinda Sharp, of Gray; his great-grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 2 at St. Patrick Church in Jaffrey, NH. Rev. Wilfred H. Deschamps, the priest who married Spencer's parents, officiated.

Spring burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Jaffrey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes for Premature Infants, 22 Bridge Street, Concord, NH 03301.

The Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street, Jaffrey, assisted the family.

Silvana Cenci
Silvana Cenci, internationally renowned explosive sculptor, died October 1, 2000 at her home in Gray.

Ms. Cenci, who was born in Florence, Italy, before World War II, married Stuart Church and moved to the U.S. permanently in 1959. She lived in Boston for many years, where she was a founder of the Brookline Art Center and a founding member of Summerthing. She exhibited widely throughout Europe and the U.S., and her work is in many museums and public and private collections.

After moving to the States, Ms. Cenci began working with new technologies from the aircraft industry, and with explosives. She moved to Northwood, NH, in the early 60s, and pursued and perfected her revolutionary experimentation with explosive sculpture in stainless steel.

She moved to Gray in 1992.

Ms. Cenci is survived by her son, Charlie Church, her many husbands, her 24 grandchildren and 92 finches and other birds and animals.

A celebratory memorial will be held on her birthday, August 4, 2001.

Shirley Walls dies
Shirley Walls, 62, of Gray, has gone home to be with the Lord on April 18, 2005 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Shirley is the daughter of Robert and Phyllis Ayer, of Yarmouth. She attended schools in Yarmouth, and retired in 2001 from Amica Insurance Company as an underwriter.

Shirley was very active in her church, leading women's groups and conducting home groups. She enjoyed helping other women. She had a great love for family, gardening, decorating her home and shopping.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 28 years, Richard Walls of Gray; a son, Robert Davis, of Gray; a daughter, Vicky Walls, of Rockwood, TN; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Jane Winters, of Yarmouth.

A memorial service will be held at 3 P.M. on Sunday, April 24, at the Windham Assembly of God Church, 1051 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302), Windham. Pastor Daniel Abbatiello will officiate.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Shirley Walls to The Windham Christian Academy, 1051 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, ME 04062.

Shirley J. Fogg
Shirley J. Fogg, of Center Road in Gray, died October 9, 2000 at a Portland hospital. She was 59.

Mrs. Fogg was a pioneer for women in the construction business. In the early 1980s, shortly after her husband became disabled, Mrs. Fogg started Warren's General Contracting. It was one of the first woman-owned general contracting companies established with federal assistance.

She worked eight years to build Warren's General Contracting into a multimillion dollar enterprise, handling such projects as an excavation and drainage project on Interstate 95.

Eventually, disability forced her to leave the business.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Fogg; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Diane) Brady, of Mesa, Arizona, and Mrs. Frank (June) Palmer, of Raymond; a son, Kaile R. Warren, Jr., of South Portland; a brother, Lucien Plummer, of Freeport; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her first husband, Kaile. R. Warren, Sr., died in 1992.

Sherrill E. Barks
Sherrill Elizabeth (Clark) Barks, who was born in 1956 in Detroit, died on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Her family and close friends were at her side.

She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1979, and married Thomas F. Barks II on September 12, 1981. Their sons, Thomas and Lucas, were born in Wyoming. The family moved to Maine in 1987, first to Brunswick, then, to Gorham.

She was a Neurodiagnostic Technician, most recently associated with Maine Neurology in Scarborough. She loved her family, her gardens and the bright and vibrant colors she brought into her home. She was enormously proud of her son Thomas, a student at Bryant College, and her son Lucas, a student at Gorham High School. Her niece in California pronounced her the best Polly Pockets player ever. And she was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband and sons; her mother and father, Raymond and Barbara Clark, of Gray; her sisters, Kerrin Pulis and her husband Greg of Los Angeles, California, and Melissa Connolly and her husband Brian, of Sherborn, MA; her brothers, Kevin and his wife Therese, of Garwood, NJ, and Andrew and his wife Jill, of Clayton, NC; her nephews, Aaron Clark, Brandon Clark and Ronan Connolly; and her nieces, Alexandria Clark, Sarah Todisco, Sydney Connolly and Margaret and Nellie Pulis.

Contributions in Sherrie's memory may be made to the Sherrill Barks Memorial Fund, c/o Peoples Heritage Bank, P.O. Box 649, Gray, Maine.

There will be no funeral; a memorial service is being planned, and a celebration of her life will be held in the Spring, when the flowers bloom again.

Sheila Sargent
Sheila Sargent, 90, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on February 1, 2004 after a short illness.

She was born in Manset, ME, the daughter of Millard and Uldene Fernald Farrar.

She married Earle Sargent in 1933. They lived in Manset until the early 1950s, then moved to the Gray-New Gloucester area and then, in the late 1950s, to Portland and South Portland, where they lived until 1998, when they moved to Apple Tree Village, in Gray.

She was predeceased by her husband and a great-grandson, James Bonney.

She is survived by a daughter, Elaine, and son-in-law, Harley Spurling; granddaughter Roxanne and her husband, Richard Sullivan, of Buxton; grandchildren Rosanne Charland, Lee Spurling, Danny and wife Brenda Spurling, all of New Gloucester, and Ruthanne and husband Bill Bonney, Robbie and husband Tony Orlando, Butch Spurling and Wendy Pollard, all of Gray, and Roger Spurling, of Eustis. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

She loved her friends at Apple Tree Village, going for rides and having friends visit.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, February 6, at Wilson Funeral Home, Gray. Pastor Douglas Hedstrom will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the James Bonney Scholarship Fund, care of Ruthanne Bonney, 68 Ramsdell Road, Gray, ME 04039.

Shannon Davison
Shannon Brookings Davison, 20, of New Gloucester, died Christmas Eve, 1998 as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident in Massachusetts.

Michelle Leavitt, a junior at Gray-New Gloucester High School, also of New Gloucester, was injured in the accident, but is expected to recover.

Shannon was born in Portland, a daughter of Paul and Marcia Brookings Davison. She graduated from Gray-New Gloucester High School in 1997, and was a second-yearstudent at the University of Maine in Presque Isle.

Shannon enjoyed hiking, camping and music. She liked helping people, and planned to join the Peace Corps after college.

Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Benjamin, and her maternal grandparents, Lowell and Barbara Brookings, of New Gloucester, and paternal grandparents, Charles and Catherine Davison, of Raymond.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shannon Davison Memorial Fund, 19 Libby Hill Road, Gray, ME 04039.

Scott Douglas Berry
Scott Douglas Berry, 38, of 76 Center Road, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Portland, the son of Robert and Mary Lockard Berry.

Scott was predeceased by his father, Robert Berry, in 1999. He is survived by his daughter, Sierra Edwards, of Lewiston, his mother, Mary Berry, of Gray, three brothers, Bruce Berry, of New Gloucester, Michael Berry, of Sabattus, Dennis Berry, of Gray, four sisters, Glenice Prosser of Gray, Jane Sherrer of North Carolina, Shirley Dempsey, of Gorham, Carolyn Martin, of Casco, and several nieces and nephews.

He worked as a carpenter, building houses throughout Maine. Among the many houses he built are two Waltmans, one each in Om Island and York Beach, a colonial in Gray for his sister and brother-in-law, a log cabin in Hudson for another brother-in-law, as well as the remodeling of his parents' house in Gray.

A hallmark of his character was Scott's ability to make people laugh through his storytelling and a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially gardening. For several years he had been growing giant pumpkins. The largest pumpkin weighed in at 603 pounds at the Cumberland County Fair.

The high point of his life was the discovery of his daughter two years ago. He loved and was so proud of Sierra, 12 years old, and often proclaimed that she was "the most beautiful girl in the world." Despite his accomplishments, including numerous stunning homes, in Scott's opinion Sierra was his masterpiece; she gave meaning and purpose to the last years of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a college trust fund set up in his daughter's name to Sierra Edwards c/o Shirley Dempsey, 16 Laurel Pines Dr., Gorham, ME 04038.

Visiting hours were on Thursday, March 18, from 3 to 4 P.M., followed by a service at 4 P.M.. Both were at Bible Believing Baptist Church on Center Rd. in Gray. Pastor Darwin Vail will officiate. Arrangements under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
