Marguerite F. Larock
2002-02-28

Marguerite F. Larock, 89, formerly of Lewiston, died Tuesday, February 19 at St. Andrews Gregory Wing in Boothbay, where she had been a resident for four months.

Born April 26, 1912, in Union Mills (St. Stephen), New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of Albert and Evis (Bridge) Frost. Shortly after her birth, her family returned to their hometown of Mechanic Falls, where she grew up active in the Methodist Church, eventually teaching Sunday School and organizing and directing a boys' choir.

After graduating second in her class from Mechanic Falls High School at the age of 16, she accepted a job as secretary to Judge Edward Parent of Lewiston in order to earn tuition money to attend normal school (teachers college). Her plans of being a teacher were waylaid, however, when Judge Parent, impressed with her diligence, pressed her into service as his law apprentice, which at that time was an alternative to college and law school. In 1937 she passed the Maine Bar Exam, becoming one of the youngest lawyers in the state, and one of the few women attorneys in the area.

In 1939, she married Lionel Larock. She continued to operate her probate law practice from her home while raising four children and assisting her husband with his first business, Lee's Variety Store. He was proprietor of DeLar, Inc. and Aluminum Building Specialties when he passed away suddenly in 1961, at the age of 47.

In 1970, Mrs. Larock joined the administration at Bates College as secretary to President Thomas H. Reynolds, retiring from that position 15 years later at age 73. She continued her law practice throughout this time, and also served on the faculty of Bliss College as an instructor of legal office procedures.

Mrs. Larock served for many years as secretary of the Androscoggin County Bar Association, sat on the executive board of Lewiston/Auburn Child & Family Service Association, Child & Family Mental Health Services and Tri-County Mental Health, and volunteered with the United Way.

In 1972, she was named Lewiston's Woman of the Year by the Business and Professional Women's Club, and she was cited in the ninth edition (1975-76) of "Who's Who in American Women."

Mrs. Larock also was active with the United Baptist Church in Lewiston where she made her mark as long-time chairwoman of the flower committee.

Flowers were one of her passions, and she shared that love by arranging and delivering wildflower bouquets to her elderly clients and other residents at local nursing homes as long as she was able. Of all her credentials, it was the title of "Flower Lady," bestowed on her by the appreciative staff and denizens of Montello Manor, that pleased her the most.

Survivors include four children, Marcia Reese of Boothbay, Dennis and his wife Renette of Lewiston, Norman and his wife Sandi of Litchfield, and Cynthia of Lewiston; one sister, Lola Collins of Auburn; two brothers, Raymond Frost and his wife Dorothy of Mechanic Falls and Vernard Frost and his wife Phyllis of Scarborough and Boca Raton, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be arranged by the family for later this year, after Interment at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

Those wishing may make memorial donations in her name to the Alzheimer's Association - Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.
