Athalene D. Leachman
2002-10-10

Athalene "Angel" Dolly Leachman, 76, a resident of Wishram, Washington, died on Wednesday, October 2, at a care facility in The Dalles after a valiant struggle with Alzheimer's and heart disease.

Born in Freeman, Maine, on January 26, 1926, she was a daughter to Lewis Benjamin and Dolly Louise (Nile) Nile. She attended schools in Rangeley and in 1948 graduated from Colby College in Waterville, where she studied English. In 1974, she earned a Master's degree, in school counseling, from the University of Maine.

After her graduation from Colby, she taught for a year. On June 18, 1950, she married Sgt. Julius (Mac) McCaslin at the Rangeley Baptist Church. Mr. McCaslin, a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Air Force and together they and their children traveled extensively, living in Texas, Maryland, their home state of Maine and for years in Germany and Turkey. They had six children together and upon Sgt. McCaslin's retirement, they made their home back in Maine. Mr. McCaslin died in 1976.

While a teacher in Boothbay Harbor she served as president of the local teacher's union. After teaching middle school English for many years in Boothbay Harbor and then being the high school guidance counselor in Rochester, N.H., she moved across country and settled in Wishram, Washington, where she married James W. Leachman at the Dalles Courthouse on April 25, 1979. She was a teacher, librarian and guidance counselor and assistant superintendent in the Wishram schools until her retirement in the mid 1990s.

Mrs. Leachman was a strong influence in the lives of her children and the many students she taught throughout the years. She loved her family, teaching, traveling, knitting, crocheting and her cats.

Survivors include her children, Maurene Blake or Edgecomb, Robert McCaslin, Morrsion, Colo., Dollie Chase, Falmouth, Maurice "Mac" McCaslin, Wishram and Doni Wylie, Winthrop; and three granddaughters and four grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in September 1999 and an infant son, John.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, at the Dalles IOOF cemetery with Pastor Dennis Stark officiating. Private cremation was held at the Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home.

William A. Lemcke
2002-09-26

William Albert Lemcke, a summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, died Friday, September 20 in Houston, Texas after a battle with cancer.

Born January 31, 1930 in Hoboken, New Jersey, he was a veteran of the Korean War.

After 40 years he retired from AT&T, and was a proud member of C.W.A.

Mr. Lemcke enjoyed working outdoors and took great pleasure in cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; two daughters; Sondra and Susan; son-in-law, Andy; and three granddaughters, Meredith Bush, Erica and Lauren Graves.

Beatrice R. Lewis
2002-06-27

Beatrice R. Lewis, 97, of Falmouth, formerly of Augusta and Boothbay, died Saturday, June 22 at Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Madison, the daughter of Benjamin and Louisa Maxim Rogers.

She attended Waterville schools graduating from Waterville High School, Class of 1923.

Mrs. Lewis was the former Director of Residence at Katherine Gibbs School in New York City for 15 years. She returned to Maine where she served as the former Director of St. Mark's Home in Augusta, a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Augusta, Past President DAR, and a member of the Augusta Garden Club.

She is predeceased by her husband, Frederick "Fritz" Lewis in 1957.

She leaves a son, Bruce H., and his wife, Eleanor Longstaff Lewis, of Portland; a daughter, Peggy Widdoes of Augusta; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.
Burial Office was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Pleasant St., Augusta with Fr. J. John Keggi as the celebrant. Interment followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are by Jones, Rich, & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.

Robert E. LaCroix
2002-11-14

Robert Edward LaCroix, 82, a summer resident of Bayville since the 1960s, died Sunday, November 10 at Fairways Nursing Home in Brookline Village, Penn.

Born March 3, 1920 in Worchester, Mass., he was a son of the late Arthur and Genevieve (Aumand) LaCroix. On September 8, 1951, he married the former Mary Elizabeth Follmer, surviving in State College, Penn.

In 1938 he graduated from Newton Center High School.

Mr. LaCroix had a degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University (1942), economics and finance at Trinity College (1947), Business Administration from University of Missouri, University of Pittsburgh (1958-1961), M.I.T. - Sloan Advancement Management Program (1970), and manufacturing in corporate strategy from Harvard University (1978).

He was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II, flying a Mustang plane. He was shot down and rescued by the Navy. He received a Purple Heart.

Mr. LaCroix worked for three years with Hamilton Standard as a test engineer and later joined Westinghouse as a design engineer in the aviation Gas Turbine Division. In 1951 he was recalled by the Air Force to Wright Aeronautical Center in Dayton, as a project engineer and as a pilot. He returned to Westinghouse in 1953 where he served in various management positions, including two years as Senior Representative to Rolls Royce in England. In 1960 he moved to the Research Labs in Pittsburgh as manager of the Applied Physics Department. Until retirement in November 1982, he served as Director of Product Transition Laboratories, Manager of Design and Manufacturing Center and Director of International Technology.

After retirement he was chairman of the RSVP Board at State College and a tax assistant through VITA program and helping people with Medicare forms.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Frederick Edward and his wife Selena of Guam and Robert Arthur and his wife Molly of San Diego, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Maryann and her husband Robert Lindberg of Warren, Ohio; four grandchildren and one brother, Arthur of Sagamore Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Marian Nelson, and one brother, George LaCroix.

A private graveside service will be conducted at Harmony Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, State College, on a future date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Fraser Street and Foster Avenue, State College, PA 16801.

Robert Liberty, 85
2002-04-12

Robert O. Liberty, 85, of Gray, died last Monday at his Dry Mills home.

He was active in the Gray Kiwanis Club and American Legion Post #86, and he had been a selectman for the Town of Gray.

Mr. Liberty was an owner of Fred S. Liberty & Son, Inc., a water-struck brick manufacturing company in North Yarmouth.

Formerly a Registered Maine Guide, he enjoyed flyfishing and hunting, and he had been a pitcher for a semiprofessional baseball team in Lewiston-Auburn.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Rae (Prince) Liberty; his daughter, Marilyn Gorneau, of Wiscasset; two sons, Richard A., of Gray, and Stanley R., of Mapleton, IL; four sisters, Celia Austin, of Gray, Irene Brown, of Cumberland, Lillian Robinson, of Harpswell, and Ida Cheney, of Freeport; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 A.M. at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Gray Village Cemetery. At his request, there will be no public visitation. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gray Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 258, Gray ME 04039.

Russell Liscomb
2002-08-09

On July 25, 2002, Russell Liscomb, formerly of Gray, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and pilot died suddenly of complications due to old age, at his home in Gorham.

Born in 1915 in Winchester, Mass., son of Charles F. and Mabel S. Liscomb. Graduate of Newton, Mass., High School and University of Omaha, Neb.

In 1940, he volunteered for military service, serving at Fort Devens before entering flight training. Commissioned in January of 1943, Mr. Liscomb was co-pilot on a B-24 and flew to England to join the 93rd Bomb Group.

For his service during World War II, Russell Liscomb's awards include an Air Medal and a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Second Lieutenant Liscomb returned stateside for retraining in late 1946. Recalled in 1951, he went to Japan and worked at air traffic control until 1953 when he was reassigned to Air Defense Command in Cape Cod. Later he was posted to Taiwan, then to Newburg, New York, Colorado Springs, Ottawa, Canada, and Topsham, Maine. He eventually settled down in nearby Gray.

After retiring, Mr. Liscomb dedicated almost ten years of service working for the State of Maine. A member of the American Legion Gray Post #86 for more than 33 years, Mr. Liscomb was also a member of the Retired Officers Association, 70Plus Ski club and B-24 club.

Survivors include his son, William Parker Liscomb; and two grandchildren Megan and Russell of San Marcos, CA; loving companion Priscilla Cotes of Gray and devoted friends John and Cheryl Welch and other friends.

Memorial service on Sunday, August 18, at 2:00 P.M., at First Congregational Church, Gray. Contributions may be made to First Church Congregational Church, PO Box 155, Gray, ME 04039 or to the American Legion, PO Box 428, Gray, ME 04039.

Ann Lowes
2002-09-19

Ann Josephine Morris Lowes, 88, of Montgomery, Alabama and formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died Saturday, August 10 at a Montgomery health care facility.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Edwin Lowes Jr., her sister, Martha Morris Murtha, and her son-in-law, Stuart Merrill Andrews.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph E. "Pete" Lowes III and Sarah Canterbury of Sharon, Vermont; one daughter, Ann Lowes Andrews of Montgomery, Alabama; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 21 in the Chapel of Prattville Memorial (Alabama) with the Reverend Mark Brown officiating. Interment will follow at a later date at the Lowes Family Mausoleum in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Lowe may be sent to one's favorite charity.

Priscilla M. Lucas
2002-03-21

Priscilla Marie Lucas, 61, of Woolwich, died Wednesday, March 13 at her residence.

Born on March 5, 1941 in Topsham, she was the daughter of Dominique and Helena (St. Pierre) Cote.

She was a graduate of John A. Cone High School in Topsham. She was also a lifetime member of the Windsor Fair, Fryeburg Fair, and the Topsham Fair. Her biggest pleasure was going up north with her husband and watching moose. She enjoyed camping and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Lucas was predeceased by by her parents.

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Burleigh Eugene Lucas Sr. of Woolwich; two daughters, Brenda Hart of Bath and Sandra Johnson of Wiscasset; one son, Michael Lucas of Woolwich; her stepchildren. Patricia Thibeault and Walter Lucas, both of Cundy's Harbor, Gail Grover of Texas, Burleigh Lucas Jr. of New Sharon, Jeffrey Lucas Sr. of Wiscasset and Anthony Lucas of Old Town; three sisters, Doris Letarte and Connie Anderson, both of Topsham, and Irene Elwell of Brunswick; three brothers, Robert Cote of Geneva, Fla., Arthur Cote of Woolwich and Ernest Cote of Chelsea; 27 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at the Blue Haven (formerly Old Tuxedo Junction) on Saturday, March 16.

In memory of Mrs. Lucas, donations may be made to the Miles Home Health Hospice, c/o Development Office, 42 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta, ME 04579, or to the Kidney Foundation.

Harry I. Lauer
2003-07-17

Harry I. Lauer, 76, of Wolfeboro, N.H., died peacefully at his home Monday, July 7.

Born March 16, 1927 in Philadelphia, Penn., he was the only son of Harry I. and Williamine R. Lauer. Upon graduation, he served briefly in the Navy.

He received his BA from Yale University and MBA from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he became the Personnel Director for the Budd Company. Later on, he attended the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass. and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1964.

Mr. Lauer served in the parishes of The Church of the Messiah in Gywnedd, Penn., All Saints Chapel in Princeton, N.J., St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden and was summer pastor of Great Cranberry Isle Church. He later owned and operated Montsweag Realty in Woolwich and for the past 15 years has served in various capacities as a career counselor.

Throughout his life, Mr. Lauer dedicated his volunteer time to educational and community service, serving on various boards, the most recent of which was trustee of the Wolfeboro Public Library. He also served as interim minister for the Diocese of New Hampshire.

His passion for life included his love of flowers, theater, music and trains, which has been passed on to all his children. He was an avid New England Patriots and Red Sox fan.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; his children, Crystal, Jessy, Emily and Jonathon Lauer, all of Wolfeboro, N.H.; former wife, Audrey Post and their children, Pixie Lauer of Alna, Harry I. Lauer III of Camden, and Audrey and Jeffrey Curtis of Boothbay Harbor; grandchildren, Myles and Tori Curtis and Aru'vah and Steven Ferrill; godchildren, Christopher and Katie; and the Wallbank family in England.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. at All Saint's Episcopal Church in Wolfeboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his beloved Wolfeboro Public Library or the VNA/Hospice of Southern Carroll County in New Hampshire.

Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.
